Spy x family is very very good because there's a bit where a far right terrorist group says that they want to start a war and a main character responds by saying to them "have any of you ever killed anyone before? Have you ever been killed before? Have you ever had a limb torn off by an artillery shell? Have you ever heard the sound of bones shattering? Have you ever smelled the reek of rotting flesh? Have you ever found the crushed bodies of your parents and siblings in a pile of rubble that used to be your home? Have you ever discovered a blown-off piece of your lover stuck to a wall? Have you ever been so hungry that you tried to eat tree bark? Or stewed a pot of human flesh? Have you ever convinced yourself that your enemy was subhuman so you could...slaughter them like animals? Have you ever been so haunted by shame and regret afterwards that you cried until you vomited? Have you ever had friends who did the same, and then took their own lives? Did you learn nothing about war at your university?!"
and that's the same volume where they adopt a dog that can see into the future

Oh my God. So ages ago when the Melinda reveal dropped, I theorised that people Anya met in person were “good” or sympathetic people or at least on the Forger’s side. And since Anya has met Melinda, the readers are sympathising with her since we can read her mind using Anya.
Anya has not met Donovan in person yet. In fact, the manga deliberately shows us that she intended to but fell asleep, hence missing out. Another person Anya hasn’t met yet is Yor’s boss, so they’re both characters shrouded in mystery and are possibly the antagonists of the series.
The Demetrius namedrop is also very interesting. It’s a possible explanation for why he keeps his mind blank, although why he does that in Eden leads to more questions. Does he assume Donovan is monitoring him in Eden? Or, more likely, has he learned there are more people with mind reading powers, and they could be anywhere?

SxF Mission 110
(Beware spoilers)
Woah! That was such a scary jumpscare 🥶🥶
Endo would you please stop doing that with Donnie??? Gosh..... 😅😅😅
Anyway, this chapter make me relieved.
Before this chapter, I was conflicted.
I know and I believe Loid is a good man. He has good heart and really wants what best for everyone. However he also was known to be such a perfectionist when doing his job, and he's so good at it. Of course he is not a stranger to anything by any means necessary to achieve his goals. That's the grey morale of his character.
Logically speaking, as the spy it is such a waste of opportunity if he suggest Melinda to leave her husband to end her suffering. But... that's exactly what he did. And he was sincere when he told Melinda that he knows Melinda is suffering by being with Donovan (showed by the transparent speech bubble).
Tumblr media
He acknowledge that there are types of abusive behaviour. Physical and verbal. And he acknowledge that Melinda is enduring a great deal of stress.
This.... is a waaaaaaayyyy more better portrayal of how Loid doing his job as a psychiatrist. Miles better than his session with the Tutor Residence chapter.
His analysis and approach is way more compassionate while at the same time, he is showing a professional side.
Aside from being compassionate, Loid also managed to push his mission forward.
And by doing that, we now know another information: Melinda (and Demetrius) believes that Donovan can read minds.
Tumblr media
I know this theory has been going around for quite sometimes. Especially with Anya being an experimental result herself, and Donovan has two identical scars on his head, in the more or less identical position of Anya's hairclip.
But....... I'm going with the unpopular opinion here.
I say no, Donovan cannot read minds.
My theory: He might be undergo an experimentation to gain such ability, but he himself is a failure. However, Donovan does uses the rumor regarding his ability to read minds to its fullest potential. That is using the rumor to control the people and ensure he maintains his political power. He might even has few trusted inner circle who actively spreading this rumors.
And that's why Donnie was so happy during that disasterous "family dinner" several chapters back. Donnie can confirm that the rumor still has its effect to his own family. A very few "outer ring" people who has direct contact with him.
But, that's it. It's just rumors being used to its potential in giving suggestive thoughts upon others.
Because, plot wise, that would be unmatch with what Endo has been building, and creating a plot hole as mentioned by Endo himself via Loid's inner thoughts.
Tumblr media
Not to say that if Donnie really can read minds, it means he already know Loid was a spy from their very first contact.
But honestly, I don't know where Endo planned with this.
Maybe this will lead to Anya's backstory??? 👀
Either way, we can only wait and let Endo cooks his story 🤭🤭🤭
Next chapter is a short chapter, iirc 🤔 so maybe we will know something in 4 weeks.
PS:
I love how Loid said thank you to Yor, and didn't actually convey what thing that make him thanked her. Since the parenteses was in his inner thoughts 🤣🤣
Tumblr media
But he was being genuine (thank you Anya). And that's what matter 🥰🥰

I cannot wait for an Adult Man to fight the Small Child. It'll be a great fight, my money is on the child
ok-ok, more thoughts under the cut
plot twist the thoughts are still not terribly serious
I think in a Donovan vs Anya telepathy fight, the main factor playing against her is simply her being young. She can have trouble sorting through and interpreting other people's thoughts, particularly someone like Loid who just thinks a lot. Donovan probably has a foot up on her in regards to that, just knowing offhand what information is important and what isn't.
However, we need to take into account that for Anya, mind reading is something that simply comes naturally to her. Even if she wasn't born with it and gained that power soon after birth, it would still be crazy early into her development. Although she doesn't know what information is/isn't relevant, she can still process it fairly quickly.
Plus she seems to use her powers in a variety of ways not only in collecting information, but also to help her locate people as seen early-early in the series, and directing people, like when she warned Twilight about the bomb (twice now that i think about it, in Bond's intro arc and the cruise ship arc) or when they were on the ski trip, and in manipulating people and using that instantly to influence them, as in the bus-hijacking arc.
For Donovan, we have far less information about him (or really technically a confirmation that he can read minds, only that Melinda suspects it), but I'm going to speculate that his theoretical abilities are far less attuned or refined as Anya's. Guessing from what Melinda said about when he started to change, it was soon after Damian was born. I'm going to guess probably a year or two, assuming that first Any'a has to successfully gain her powers in an experiment before Donovan undertakes the same process, so maybe a few months depending on what risks he's willing to take. That being said, no matter what, his brain would be fully developed.
So having a new sense added to the mix at such a latter date is going to mess with him more. We know that he no longer participates in events that have a lot of people at them except for the imperial scholar parent events. He is probably overwhelmed by a large groups thoughts and can't process them out as easily. From what we can tell, he doesn't even go out and about for smaller events where large groups can form, not like Melinda anyway. Anya still goes out on ootings, we can see her in crowds functioning pretty normally, and she mainly seems to get overwhelmed if she starts actively focusing on the groups thoughts or when emotions are high and/or negative (the rally in the first ooting and when she was looking at the penguins)
So while Donovan can leverage his experience to know what information to piece out, Anya has him beat in pure processing power. And with her being so young, she has more time to refine her abilities and make up for what she lacks. Her thought processes work seamlessly with her abilities, Donovan however doesn't get that. He is probably easier to overwhelm, needs more time to simply consume whatever he is hearing.
So, in a literal battle of the minds, Anya can just start dumping a ton of the irrelevant information she has to overload Donovan, thus winning the battle.
Sadly, Donovan could definitely just pick her up and throw her if need be.
So the score is kinda even rn
On actual thoughts for this chapter, I'm still processing. We now know that at least Melinda thinks Donovan can read minds, but we art exactly sure what that entails. Is it similar to Anya's, or is it different? An actual sort of dialogue like how Anya reads, or more of vibe, general direction of their thoughts or feelings? And like... is she right? she could be wrong, Donovan could just be a paranoid freak, he could of changed his actions not because he can read minds but because he knows that there are people who can. Idk, all I know is that Loid needs to start working with her to learn some techniques to help her manage her anxiety and to get her the fuck out of her situation, I have a lot of thoughts about what Loid should be doing to help her and at least some of them involve getting Melinda and Yor to hangout more.

I said it before (see above) and I'll say it again : the fact Anya told Damian, Donovan's second son, that mind powers are real in ch95 may just be what will save Melinda and her sons, narratively speaking. Even if Damian doesn't believe in it yet (because Damian will believe in it before Twilight does, that's almost for sure).
Amazing couple chapters, can't wait for the rest !
PS : this chapter also told us that Demetrius at least seems to speak with his mom, so that's a relief for him. Also his lack of thoughts (when Anya read his mind) makes a lot more sense now.
Was Donovan trying to read the mind of his family members ?
Like some fans, I believe Donovan's scars on both sides of his forehead (which he didn't have as a kid, as we know thanks to Henderson's flashback) are proof that he had some sort of neurosurgery.
Tumblr media
Some fans say it was to suppress unecessary emotions : he indeed only ever reacts neutrally, positively or negatively, using a few basic emotions like judgement, acknowledgement and disappointment (both in ch106 and ch38).
However, I'm also of the opinion that Donovan has a big link to the organization that experimented on Anya and maybe that neurosurgery was meant to give him "mind-reading" powers, similar to Anya's.
After all, he did say two things of the utmost importance to his characterization :
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So basically “you can’t trust anyone but yourself”.
As such, thematically it makes sense that he's Twilight's entire mission, but also, as a man with so much distrust, he would definitely be interested in a project that would allow a peak into other people's thoughts.
Demetrius is also a good hint as to what could be up with Donovan :
Tumblr media
The son Donovan used to be so invested in seems very similar to his father (my God, his eyes), but when Anya tried to hear his thoughts ?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What she rather got was that "pondering [about not understanding people] is a waste of time" for him. So maybe, when they used to spend time together, Donovan showed a lot of distrust towards his own son and taught him to trust no one, so much that Demetrius started to believe all people are an enigma to him.
And that makes sense : children learn from their parents' example, in most cases (take Anya with Twilight and Yor). So if your father is a man who hardcore believes everyone else lies, how would his son understand all the moratively complex dynamics that exist between many people ? Avoiding to think altogether would be less of a headache, for sure.
Lastly, Donovan's reaction about the family dinner is another good hint he maybe has mind reading powers : Melinda tried once to chat but quickly gave up, while Damian spent the entire meal mustering the courage to speak up, so what could decidedly be interesting since nothing was said ?
Tumblr media
However if things were thought during dinner... well, it sure would give a different reading to this scene.
Bonus #1 : since Twilight's entire life is based on a lie (his name, his work, his family, maybe even his father, who knows), it makes absolute sense that the entire plot is about deciphering what Donovan and his plans are about.
The fact he keeps on getting emotionally trapped by four year old Anya, who can read his mind, makes it instantly ten times more intense if Donovan now also has mind reading powers.
Bonus #2 : the only other important character in the narrative, besides Anya, who is aware that mind reading is real is Damian.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He doesn't believe in it yet, but once he does, it's likely that his friendship with Anya will eventually make Damian realize a lot about what his father has been up to (in the meantime, Yor please, give Miranda the desire to fight for her sons' safety).
TL;DR maybe Donovan has (recent ?) mind reading powers (I'd even add Sigmund Authen's past as an esteemed neurology professor is related to the whole shenanigan).
The family dinner was just a way to make extra sure that no one in his family is plotting against him, hence the bodyguards at home, because how more dysfunctional can it get ?

*SxF ch110 manga spoilers*
Tumblr media
Melinda is definitely not telling Loid the truth here because in ch108 when Anya read Melinda’s mind, she was thinking about how she can’t go against “his wishes. Hmm…
Tumblr media
It makes sense that Melinda isn’t going to share everything with Loid since it’s her first session with him and she doesn’t fully trust him yet. But yeah, something doesn’t add up just yet…
