So Jet Lag the Game is a web series on YouTube created by Sam Denby (the creator and voice of Wendover Productions and Half As Interesting), Adam Chase and Ben Doyle (who have writers on Half As Interesting). Each season takes the form of a game played on a countrywide scale. The game is different each season. Some games include

Connect 4 played on the western states of the US. A game of tag played across Europe. Capture the flag played across Japan.

Each game also has challenges. Their purpose varies depending on the season but they are required for progression. Some challenges include:

Get a team member drunk. Eat soup in a Helicopter. High Five at the highest point in the state. Stalk a bird.

Each season also has other mechanics but this is a general overview. The teams are usually Ben and Adam on one side and Sam and a guest on the other (except for season 3 where it was Sam v Ben v Adam). It's a very fun show and I would reccomend it. There are 6 seasons so far and a 7th has been filmed. Have fun!

I - pages - one book you're currently reading

I know it says one, but I'll answer with two since I both read for school and pleasure. Right now, I'm reading The Aeneid by Vergil (Shadi Bartsch translation) for school. As for fun, I'm reading a few right now, but one of them is Persepolis 2 by Marjane Satrapi. I highly reccomend checking out the duology.

V - calendar - favourite season?

My favourite season would have to be fall. I like the weather--its the perfect balance between hot and cold. Not to mention the leaves turning pretty shades of yellow/orange/brown. My college campus looks especially pretty during the fall.

XVII - dream - what do you listen to, to fall asleep?

I either listen to rain sounds or nothing at all. I used to rarely listen to anything to fall asleep, only doing so when having a particularly difficult time falling asleep or if a song happened to lull me to sleep. Nowadays, I listen to rain sounds to block out the noise from my roomate talking on the phone with her friends, but lately I've been so tired that I can sleep through the noise lol.

Hi!! I’m not really an authority on this matter because I’m also incredibly new to digimon( this time 2 years ago i wouldnt even know my piyomons from my palmons and what not) but i can give some general advice for navigating the franchise from the perspective of someone who was also recently completley uninitiated.

the first and most important thing i would say to anyone looking to get into digimon is that rather than being a “games first, anime second” franchise like pokemon is, digimon is very much “anime first, games second” as in the most beloved and ubiquitous “digimon” properties are definitively the anime  -- so i reccomend you start there. while i love a lot of the digimon games dearly, they’re very rough around the edges and a lot of what’s fun about them relies on pre-existing knowledge of the franchise and mechanics.

as for the anime, the first two seasons (adventure and adventure 02) are one continuous story set in the same universe, and every season following that with a few exceptions (tamers, frontier, savers, xros, so on and so forth) take place in continuities and worlds that are completely separate and self contained with their own rules. 

most people will tell you to start with adventure and 02, because they’re kind of The Most Beloved and classic entries. this is fair advice, but i think it kind of depends on preference! like chimera said, we started with tamers, and personally i think if we had started with adventure we would have dropped it. so that’s generally what i suggest to people : either start with adventure or tamers based on your preference.

adventure feels a bit more tonally similar to pokeani from around the same time period; it has a much goofier vibe, generally less grounded stakes, and more of a monster-of-the-week type feel for the majority of its run. if that kind of thing sounds good to you, you should start there! (make sure you’re watching the 1999 version; the 2020 remake is a completely different show LOL)

tamers is more grounded, focused on more intimately developing a smaller cast of characters, has a generally “heavier” tone and a much greater emphasis on overarching story, and is probably more suited as a series introduction for anyone who prefers more “serious” or psychological stories.  terriermon and lopmon are also in tamers if you’re drawn to them in particular!! and utterly delightful , the partner terriermon in tamers is one of my favorite digimon partners in the whole franchise LOL

so TLDR, the two watch orders i generally recommend are

for fans of lighter tone + monster of the week : digimon adventure (1999) -> digimon adventure 02 -> tamers -> frontier and so forth if you feel inclined for fans of heavier tone + emphasis on character drama: digimon tamers -> digimon adventure -> digimon adventure 02 -> frontier and so forth if you feel inclined.

generally i suggest subs for the anime but i know it’s common for people to really enjoy the dubs too and it seems like a relatively similar experience for every season except 02, which got royally fucked over in translation (WHICH IS A SHAME because it’s my favorite season but that’s a totally different diatribe.)

(also of note though: i highly reccomend before you watch digimon adventure you also seek out the 1999 short film of the same name directed by mamoru hosoda of wolf children fame; it’s a really great experience and also i think will just elevate your appreciation of adventure a lot. digimon has really good and weird movies!)

the anime notwithstanding, there are games for digimon too -- split into two major subcategories, there are “digimon world” line games which use V-Pet-type mechanics (monster raising a la tamagotchi) and the “digimon story” line games which are more like a typical pokemon-ish RPG. im not as knowledgable here, but the best starting point for “digimon world” is probably digimon world for the psX, which is an extremely janky and obnoxious game that i personally love and isnt too difficult to emulate, and most people suggest starting with digimon cyber sleuth for the “digimon story” line. i have qualms with cyber sleuth but i had a good time with it and it’s about as polished and streamlined as that particular mechanical approach to digimon gets. the story is batshit also.

WHOA Hi!! you're super nice it's awesome to hear from you :) I love digimon a whole bunch but all of my knowledge is super specific to my own interest in the franchise and it's super huge, and a little jarring especially if you're coming from being a lifelong pokemon fan like i was, but i like digimon even more!

To be honest though @animalinvestigator Coda is better at answering these sorts of questions than I am. it also depends on what you're looking to get into (games, anime, tcg etc.) Personally both coda and I started with watching the anime digimon tamers and branched out from there. But I told coda to reblog this and add their own thoughts about this because it has a lot so Just wait and look for the reblog

1. What’s your favorite genre to write

I’m the rom com girl for sure, I love super sappy love stories with minimal drama for the most part. I am a huge member of the happy endings camp. I’ve only ever written Modern AUs because of this but also kind of because I just like to leave canon alone and I struggle to balance the sci fi elements at times in regard to continuity. Also a major softie for kid fics, which I don’t think counts as a genre but I’m including it anyway.

2. Do you pull inspiration from real life? Or do you pull things from other books/fanfic?

My main Bellarke series is rom com AUs based off of romantic comedies and I have a few other stories based off of TV shows. So I would say for the most part I tend to draw from media. A lot of the kid stuff I write comes from babysitting and having nieces and nephews lol but that’s really the only real life stuff I draw from.

3. Do you tend to write one-shots, short stories or longer things?

I mainly write long fics, brevity is not my strong suit for sure. I love writing slow burns so multi chapter fics tend to be structured better for that. But I’ve just started delving into one shots and I’ve really been enjoying it! It’s kind of nice to give someone a peek in a world without giving away too much. I’ve been loving one shot prompts so if you have any please send them my way!

4. Do you prefer description or dialogue?

Definitely dialogue! It’s the way I infuse humor into my stories most of the time and I love the back and forth or writing characters flirting. Description is a little harder for me because I know setting the scene is important but it’s so mechanical that I tend to lose my train of thought!

5. Favorite fic/book of all time?

This is such a hard question! So many things I could write here and I always have a hard time narrowing down options...

Books: Harry Potter was a super important book series for me growing up, I also love anything by Bob Goff because he’s so inspiring and positive and I just recently finished Where the Crawdads Sing which was so southern, beautiful and tragic all at once (would highly reccomend).

Fics: so I’ve had a recent obsession with @burninghoneyatdusk ‘s fic “Homesick (It’s a bittersweet feeling) guys it is such a beautifully woven love story i thought about it for DAYS after I finished reading 10/10 amazing!! Also anything by my dear pal @ktanansi but her quarintine fic is so sweet and spicy just ugh love it!

Hmm those are the two I’m actively reading rn, I have a hard time seeking out fic to read but if you write modern AU romance or have any good ones send them my way pls!

6. Favorite Tropes

Friends to lovers! Kid fics! Adopting kids in fics! Two people who aren’t together raising kids and falling in love! Slow burns! Enemies to friends to lovers!

7. Are you the kind of person to work on more than one WIP?

Hmm this is tough! I go back and fourth on this...I have two fics I wrote by themselves and focused solely on them and I am absolutely more emotionally attached tho those stories. I think for stories that are a little more serious and intricate I like to focus on them independently because I want to be able to keep the storyline and plot details straight (Instant Family was one of these). But with more lighthearted things I tend to work on a few at once so that the humor stays fresh and I don’t let it get to angsty.

8. How long have you been writing for?

I got my start on FFN when you still had to give copyright warnings and you could leave author’s notes in the middle of your fics lol...meaning I’m ancient as heckingbob y’all. I think I’ve been writing for over 13 years? I used to write cringe worthy dramione fic and Rory/Jess fic for Gilmore girls back when I had no idea what relationships were and I thought a huge kiss at the end was a great piece of tension relief!

I took about an 8-9 year break and then fell onto the Bellarke fandom and wrote “Life as we Know it” on a whim! I’ve been back for almost a year now and everything about fan fiction is so different (a lot of it in a good way) but it’s been so wonderful to be creative and write stories again.

9. Do you tend to write more in the afternoon or evening?

I work full time in PR and am also in school so I tend to do most of my writing at night while I’m unwinding with a glass of wine ;) this is the way I decompress from my job hahah it’s why I often give Clarke some interaction of my career and take all my frustration out on it! It’s also usually something I do whenever on weekends when the inspo strikes.

10. Do you prefer to post your WIP chapter by chapter, or do you prefer to wait until it’s 100% done before posting?

I think for me, the best part about writing fic vs writing traditional novels is the ability to get chapter by chapter feedback and communicate with readers as I write! I love seeing the little nuances people find in my writing (often things I don’t see myself) and incorporating it into my stories. There’s also been times where I’ve had certain plot points planned and then scrapped them based on the reactions to the build up! So I think I’m for sure a chapter by chapter person!

12 ½ things i have learned at 25.

your girl is going through a current existential ¼ life crisis (plus a bout of tonsillitis) and this has lead to a lot of self-reflection and questions such as “who am i?” “where am i?” and “what is the god damn meaning of life!?”. so i decided to list out a couple of things i DO know or am trying to know. just to help out other future failed millennials like myself. so here we go! 12 ½ thing i have learned at the ripe ol' age of twenty-five. practical things:

1. the orange petrol light in your car is NOT your m8. as soon as you see this bad boy vacate to the nearest petrol station immediately and fill her up up with at least $20. saves you from running out of petrol on the motorway (hehe! it happens to the best of us!). i carry jumper leads petrol canisteres every where i go because i fail to follow my own advice and constantly have  no petrol. :)   :)   :) 2. BACK UP YOUR IPHONE! go into itunes right now and back it up, back it up, you got it, you got it. there will come a time when you drop your phone in the toilet and realise all your ‘european living’ snaps & selfies from your bff’s wedding have been flushed away. backups ROCK ‘cos you can just restore all your shit plus the organisation of your apps!! (yes i have OCD) on to a new phone if your first is road kill. (RIP) 3. i have not tips for a hangover. because i suffer ever time. but i DO know they are not aaas bad if you’ve had a burger before drinking. & skull water from the tap like a small cat when you get home. add two panadol and two neurofen in the morning plus a v large nap and you’ll be ok. also never suggest brunch before eleven. people always want it earlier and i’m thinking “plz for the love of god! do you want me to vom outside of lola stay’s (yum place) again?!’.  4. DO NOT BUY PULP BOOTS FROM HANNAHS. YOU WILL DIE. no joke, the first time i wore some cute (cheap) boots from hannahs my knees ate gravel & i slide down a concrete driveway for at least 30 seconds. i then got up. & proceeded to fall again. the grip on these shoes are terrible. just ask the scars on my knees! my work m8 unkowingly got the same shoes & the same happened to her. 5. don’t be dumb. pay your student loan. contribute to kiwi saver. put a few dollars away for emgerencies. and be like 5% smarter than most people about money. hell yeah i accidentally spent $80 on a round of sambuca shots but at least i know if (when) my car breaks down on the motorway i’ll have an emergency fund to crack into.

relationships: from family to friends to foes to f*ckbois. 

6. clichè to say but cull garbage people from your life. block/delete/unfollow/mute the idiots. think of all the data you will save from removing these pointless stories from your social media feed! & if someone doesn’t add anything positive to your life why should they get to be apart of it? 7. stop playing games & just message people back already!!!! i literately will reply to some before they’ve even finished their sentence. what is the harm of replying fast? too eager? geunine interest in a conversation?? everyone knows being left on read is the worst & despite what cosmo says about ‘waiting 1 hour, 16 minutes and 30 seconds before replying to guy’ we know that’s stupid AF. reply to your m8s, reply to your mum and when you don’t, apologise on the late response, someone might be waiting on you. 8. we are all going through some tough, confusing times. & a lot of the time we are so rapt up in our own lives we fail to check on others. sometimes we need to listen more than we speak. so let your m8s talk about their asshole boss (even if you have no idea who he is), read all the screenshots & be the shoulder to cry on to the friend who broke up with #bae (for the 7th time). people need comfort & people often need to vent. don’t diminish someones problems just because they are not as relevant or dramatic as yours. 9. home is where the heart is. so appreciate those who make your home, home. home to me is where ever there is a bed, a laptop & a couple of people who ask the stock standard daily “how was your daaaay”. home is a cat nearby, sun on the door step and place i can collectively gather at least five people for a rowdy byo.

10. if it looks like people are having more fun than you on social media, guess what! they probably are!! & if you were in their postion you’d be bragging up that holiday, engagment or promotion too. but that doesn’t stop you from living your best life, where ever you are. you can have just as much fun too, you just have to make it yourself. 11. self care is very real. but it’s not just bubble baths & chocolate & ‘OMG TREAT YO’ SELF’. a while back i tried to call sleeping for two weeks straight ‘self care’ and then realised i was just depressed and needed to sort my life out. self care is paying your bills & eating some fruit n veg, forcing yourself to be social & see m8s and having some sort of routine to day to day life. normality is self care. 12. do dumb shit. now i’m not talking about doing 160k’s on the motorway for the thrill!!! or seeing how long you can hold you breath for in the kids pool. but go do some things you wouldn’t usually do. examples of some dumb shit i’ve done: (which ended up being 10/10 would reccomend to friends) signed up to a reality tv show, joined TWO indoor netball teams (and proceeded to ruin my calves from the non-existal exercise i’ve previously done) & spent a ridiculous amount of money on a european holiday. 12 ½. the best time to post on instagram is 8.30pm on a monday night. don’t let the instagram algorithms mess up your BANGER gram that the world needs to see.

1. What is one piece of advice that you wished that you’d gotten sooner?

Over the Garden Wall! It’s good to watch all year round, and it’s quick and easy to get through

i have two of my cats living with me right now- Princess and Precious, and then not living with me i have two more cats, Henry and Lucretsia, and then six dogs, Enzo, Giovanni, Kyuss, Sarah, Chloe, and Tobias

4. What made you join tumblr and have you been in many different fandoms?

My ex when I was like thirteen told me to get one so i got one. I’ve been in a couple of fandoms but haven’t officially joined? I wrote Warrior cats fanfic when I was 8, Twilight fanfic when I was 11, Inuyasha fanfic  when i was 11, and then Ouran High School Host Club and Gakuen Alice fanfic. Then I stopped writing for a while and joined the phandom officially on tumblr when i was sixteen. was briefly in the skam fandom but now i just read fanfic and dont interact with the fandom.

5. What’s the weather like where you are right now?

its dark and cold

admittedly i had to look up what america’s national dish was and was surprised to find that it’s a hamburger. I’m a vegetarian so i don’t eat regular hamburgers made from beef but i do like the veggie ones

i think i like description and writing style the most. the conflict is always really important and fun to read as well

Okay, I know I have some Bravely fans as followers so I apologize if I ruffle feathers but I really dont think its a very good series.  Default is very good for the first half but then gets aggressively terrible for the latter half (barring you never figure out that if you reclass everyone to monks, brave x4 and attack for all commands then set up that as auto battle and you literally never have to turn off auto battle at any point for the entire game. Then the whole game is dumb and plays itself)

Bravely Second is slightly less broken in the gameplay department but whether or not you want to blame the original script or the localization, the writing is painfully bad in English.  The 90th time you have to hear a terrible approximation of a French accent say “ball busters” or “coup de gravy,” you will want to die.  I wish I was exaggerating when I say 90 but if anything I am underselling how often those lines get repeated. 

The biggest nail in the coffin for these games is that they are worse in pretty much every way than Final Fantasy V. V does the lighthearted but occasionally still serious story and characters (plus an extremely similar job system) better. So as long as you have access to FFV, which has been released outside of Japan on Playstation 1, Game Boy Advance, PSN, IOS, Android, and Steam, I cant really recommend picking up the Bravely games.  If you dont have access to any of those or you have played V and loved it so much that you dont mind a similar but worse but still okay experience, then I recommend giving Bravely Default a play, at least until it gets terrible halfway through.  Bravely Second I recommend giving a hard pass.

Zach Gage just can't leave well enough alone, can he? Not content with being the mastermind behind the excellent Spelltower, he decided that it needed to dominate the Word/Puzzle market some more and so decided to team up with someone to create a new and improved version. Spelltower+ is just as good as the original, and provides much of the original game's content for free.

The pay-once IAP unlocks the full game and many more modes, although not all of them are as 'essential' as the basic stuff. Still, lots of extra fun to be had here, and it'd be a nice way to show Zach your appreciation if you wanted to.

TypeShift

Developer: Zach Gage Platforms:  iOS, Android Price: Free with IAP

One of Zach Gage's unique creations, TypeShift focuses on redesigning the good old crossword puzzle. Columns of letters can be slid back and forth to create a series of words among them on a central row. Every time a letter is used in a word, they turn green. You pass the stage when all of the available letters are turned green. Sounds easy enough, but of course it’s not. Other modes, like Clue Mode, bring it further in line with the traditional crossword.  Either way, a few rounds of it, and you’ll be scratching your head in the best possible way.

Alphabears 2

Developer: Spry Fox Platforms: iOS Universal, Android Price: Free

Following on from something as a sequel isn't always an easy experience - it can be quite easy to lose sight of what made the original great in the first place. Alphabears 2 has no such issues however, and is comfortably a better game than its predecessor in almost every way. It has an in-game dictionary, more interaction and play modes and it's only real draw-back is its monetisation.

It's definitely fairer than the original game, but even buying the full version doesn't remove the timers or other freemium-like mechanics. Still, this is an incredibly smart word app that any puzzle aficionado should at least try, if not out-right purchase.

Hardback

Developer: Fowers Games Platforms:  iOS Universal, Android Price: $4.99

This deck-building word game would feel just at home on our list of best card games as it would here, but since Hardback's central twist is that cards are only playable in a Scrabble-esque system of dictionary-friendly sets, we feel it's apt to list is here. The sequel to 2016's Paperback, the key thing to remember about this game is that you can't play it as 'just' a word game.

The beauty of Hardback is that you're not just out to score long, multi-lettered words, you're out to play cards that combo well together to acheive high scores. This can be as simple as collecting a great set of cards that just say 'OFF', or indeed bagging a great collection for a longer word. The limitations to playing cards as words adds a challenging yet interesting twist to a classic game-type. Main changes over the first iteration include tweaks to Wild Cards, Special Abilities and additional card draw.

Supertype

Developer: Philipp Stollenmayer Platforms:  iOS, Android Price: $1.99

We get accustomed to the sort of word games that have us finding and planted letters to make words. If we’re feeling particularly creative, we find word games that are just complex versions of word finds or crosswords set in some other sort of puzzle motif. In Supertype, words are tools. After typing a word, the letters fall through the obstacle course below, the goal being to find the right letters to roll or slide through the right nooks and crannies in order to burst the target dots below. On harder puzzles, making sure your word has skinny enough letters in the right places is key to shimmying into victory.

Wordgraphy

Developer: Alper Iskender Platforms: iOS Price: Free with IAPs

Wordgraphy takes the old trope of unscrambling arrays of letters to make new words and crosses it with some Sudoku elements. Words line the outside of the table, and letters can only be switched with letters in the same position as other letter groups on each side. For example, the second letter in a five letter array at the top of the square board can only be swapped with the second letter of another of the other for arrays lining the other side. The result is a clever word construction gimmick that keeps you guessing and tests the depth of your own vocabulary very quickly.

BAIKOH

Developer: Mum Not Proud Platforms: iOS, Android Price: Free with IAPs

Take the pressure of a gradually filling space that has to be emptied by you, the intrepid player, a la Tetris. Combine the added bonus stress of each falling piece being a letter that needs to be used to create words as fast as you can. Then sprinkle on top a narrator that has an aggressive ire towards you, and you have all the ingredients for BAIKOH. Falling letters can come with added attributes as well, like frozen ones that will gradually freeze other letters, making them harder to remove. Unlockable badges can help even out the playing field, but this is a hard game meant to push your reflexes and critical thinking skills to the limit and break them on rapid occasion.

Sidewords

Developer: Milkbag Games Platforms: iOS, Android Price: $2.99

Taking words and making other words out of them is nothing new in the genre, but Sidewords commands a new, brain-bending approach to the concept. On the top and to the left of a grid are two words. The size of those words determines the size of the grid, which each letter creating a row or column. Using the letters of the two words, you must make new words of course. But the twist is that the words you make take up the spots on the grid where those letters intersect. You have to fill the whole grid with words to move on, so using a lot of letters to make a word can take up a lot of real estate in the grid, making it hard to create words with the scraps. Strategy and spatial awareness are key.

Puzzlejuice

Developer: Sirvo LLC Platforms: iOS Price: $1.99

A brainchild from Asher Vollmer, of Threes! fame, Puzzlejuice takes the best parts of Boggle and Tetris and slaps them together to make something that is much more challenging than the sum of its parts. Colorful shapes drop into the field like Tetris, and as you form lines or match colors, they turn into letters. To remove the blocks, you must turn those letters into words. There’s a lot going on at once, and as difficulties unlock, and different play modes open up, this becomes one of the most brain-turning games on the App store.

Party and multiplayer games are a really entertaining and worthwhile genre of games and nothing’s better than meeting up, sharing a good meal, and capping off a hangout session via our mobiles.

Sometimes it's hard to get a group of people together, but so long as there's two of you, we've got another great list you might like. 

Easy to pick up, high-energy and socially demanding, but along with these requirements comes exhilaration, surprise and a guaranteed way to shake things up. The life of the party might just be lurking in the palm of your hand. Legends of Andor (Review)

Developer: Daedelic Entertainment Platforms: iOS Universal, Android Price: $4.99

While not specifically designed with group-play in mind, the nature of Andor means that every hero within the group must take their turn in full before play moves on to the next hero. Given that this is also a fully co-op adventure/RPG, it allows for some accessible (and technically, informal) pass-and-play where you and your group can each take control of a single (or small grouping) of characters as you venture out into the lands of Andor.

This lacks the competitive experience you'll find with other entries on this list, but if you're the kind of people who enjoy playing D&D then this digital alternative is a great way to pass an evening if you don't have access to all your table-top kit, or if you simply don't fancy doing a full on RPG session. The great thing about the digital adaptation of Andor is that it comes with a lot more content than the original physical game, so you really are getting a one-of-a-kind experience.

Royal Adviser (Review)

Developer: Happy Hobgoblin Platforms:  iOS Universal, Android Price: $5.99

While Royal Adviser may not be the best 'app' from the self-contained perspective, it's an excellent attempt at creating a wholly digital group experience. If you think of great group games like One Night Ultimate Werewolf or Coup, Royal Adviser packs all of that intrigue and social interaction into a digital game that can in theory fit in your pocket (if you're playing on your phone - the iPad experience is better).

A game of social deduction and hidden objectives, the players each have their own private goal they have to try and advance without tipping off anyone as to what it is. If you act too obvious, other players can try to guess what objective you have, and if they succeed, you lose a lot of influence and points. There is Reigns style trade-off to things as well, so if you try to do one thing, you'll take away resources from another, and thus the bickering and double-dealing ensues. 

Identity V

Developer: NetEase Games Platforms:  iOS, Android Price: Free

One hunter chases four innocents across a gothic manse while the would-be escapees struggle to find and solve puzzles. The asymmetry and creepy-cute aesthetic make for a thrilling and iconic experience. The devs are always experimenting with new play modes (like the 8v2 for starters) and the hunt-or-be-hunted setup is a timely mix of the survival- and battle-royale games so en vogue these days. Add in a splash of progression (skill trees, new and unusual characters, cosmetic unlocks) and you have a winner. 

Soul Knight

Developer: ChillyRoom Platforms: iOS, Android Price: Free

Soul Knight is a pixelated top-down arcade shooter with a dash of roguelike elements thrown in for good measure. Technically it’s not primarily a multiplayer game, but the local multiplayer mode is so good it would be criminal not to give it a shout-out here. The weapons are unusual and distinctive, dreamt up with some real flair. It takes some real skill to pull off impressive moves, but the difficulty-satisfaction curve is pitched just right with this one. 

Mucho Party

Developer: GlobZ Platforms: iTunes, Android Price: Free (effectively a trial with limited games), $3.99 one-time IAP for full unlock.

Sample a sumptuous variety of mini-games with inspired and easily-digested twists with goofy facial reactions, and deft touch controls. Your player avatar has an oversized head with a handful of emote options which are customizable: just snap a few photos of your mug with exaggerated expressions and mild hilarity ensues. Yes, the new Mario Party is a classic return to form but Mucho Party is a really nice substitute available for the price of a song. A hidden gem.

Heads Up! 

Developer: Warner Bros. Platforms: iOS, Android Price: $0.99, Free (android). Optional IAP to unlock extra category modes.

Heads Up! Was a victim of its own success for a time. The game is dead simple: a word appears on screen and is held above the guesser’s head. This same guesser is assailed by clues from teammates until the guesser finds the right word or phrase . Cycling through words quickly to rack up a high score, switching up the guessing role amongst team members. Heads Up! has one simple advantage over every other game on this list: it doesn’t need a surface to work. Works just as great standing or crammed together in a vehicle. Anywhere with good sight lines is fair game for Heads Up! short of a hall of mirrors. It’s so good that it’s cliche, at risk of getting played to death and forgotten. In case you’ve never given it a chance with a bored group, do.

Spaceteam

Developer: Henry Smith Platforms: iOS, Android Price: Free

Masquerading as chaos and nonsense, Spaceteam never fails to gin up a riotous good time. Navigating the reaches of space takes technical know-how and precise coordination, and Spaceteam spoofs these facts of spacetime-travel by splitting up instructions from control panels. Someone knows which button to press, and where, but the orders and details are deliberately turned into techno-speak-gibberish. Jabbering, giddy gibbons sharing gibberish...in space. Seriously though, the game works wonders for those improvisational types who thrive on chaos and unprecedented social situations. Oh, and it allows for cross-platform play between Android and iOS.

Talisman: Digital Edition

Talisman is a wild time and a mess, digital or analogue, but it’s markedly tidier and every bit as much of a caper on the good old ‘pad. Collecting magic artefacts, spells and literal pieces of fate and destiny as the hour grows late. It’s a classic and epic game, but also well suited to casual meet-and-greets, too. Because each turn’s decisions are relatively simple and straightforward, players can banter, chow down or otherwise divert themselves without hampering the flow of the gameplay at all.

Psych!

Developer: Warner Bros. Platforms: iOS, Android Price: Free

Creative word games can be risky prospects when entertaining guests, but they also give such sharp turns of phrase and sweet surprises. (Cue Balderdash, Apples to Apples, Cards Against Humanity) Anything that allows for write-in answers is a golden opportunity, and Psych! Is no exception, adding replayability and variety. After hearing the prompt, each player jots down a fake answer to add to the pool. Points are earned by either guessing the true answer, or duping others into picking yours. It’s clean, freeform and effortless excuse to mess around and let your imagination run wild with some friends.

Mysterium

Developer: Asmodee Digital Platforms:  iOS, Android Price: $3.99, $3.49

Solve a murder mystery with a little ethereal help in Mysterium, where players will use richly illustrated images to try and winnow the guilty from the innocent. Just like in Clue, location, suspect and weapon will have to be grouped into the proper combinations. The mediums divine which of these combinations is valid, and then after successfully sleuthing, the group has to figure out which of the stories is the ghost’s own tragic ending. So a game that goes well ends where the ghost’s afterlife begun. It’s a fun gothic take on deduction, creative visual interpretation, and contention, sometimes downright quarrelsome co-operative goals.

Triple Agent

Developer: Tasty Rook Platforms: iOS, Android Price: Free

Triple Agent is a mixture of chaos and order, of ineffective backstabs, liars giving useful tips and honest fools botching the naked truth. It’s a find-the-betrayer style party game, just like Mafia and Werewolf, but what sets it apart from its ilk, aside from a whip-smart app and panoply of extra optional win conditions, is the total miniaturisation of the experience. One device is passed around to dole out identities, clues and the final elimination vote. The group at the end of the chaotic play session collectively eliminates one person, and if they were a Good Guy the Bad Guys win and vice versa. Really fresh interface and game design take on an old standard.

Worms 4

Developer: Team17 Platforms:  iOS, Android Price: $4.99

Worms are good for the earth, enriching the soil and setting the fields for a rich harvest next season. Worms from Team 17, on the other hand, spend all their lives trading quips and aiming impractical and ultraviolent weapons at each other. Carpet bombs, napalm, the holy hand grenade, anything and everything is an instrument of death in Worms. The terrain is destructible too, and the only ‘loot crate’ drops are just in-game goodies and not a euphemism for scummy monetisation. This is a premier zany 2D shootout, decades old and no worse for wear.
