I’m in the ER right now (I am okay, btw, just usual issues. Precautionary visit yk.) and I can’t help but think about how Lighter would handle that. Maybe that’s fucked up, but excuse my tired ass for wanting comfort in fictional men.

I know it would scare the fuck out of him. If you for any reason we’re to end up in the hospital, but the Emergency Room is probably his least favorite place on earth. Now, depending on if HE was the one who took you or if it was someone else, he’d be significantly more nervous.

Sure, taking his partner to the ER is horrible and terrifying, something is wrong enough with them that they need medical attention urgently. But finding out you’re there without him? He will drop everything, and I mean literally everything to get to you. Doesn’t matter if he’s running errands or mid fight, the second he hears you’re not okay he’s gone.

The idea that he could lose you is the most gut wrenching news he could ever receive second to actually losing you. So he’s genuinely such a mess, not that he appears so, when he walks through that door. He’s practically begging this poor receptionist to let him see you, or if he’s with you he’s patiently staring over your shoulder like a guard dog. (I feel so bad for the receptionist).

He’ll pace and pace until you’re finally let back, and then he’ll watch. He’ll sit there and scrutinize everything the doctors do, and he asks questions about literally everything. You’d think he was the one getting treated. Nope, he’s just terrified.

He hates hospitals so much, they’re so sterile and lifeless and such huge reminders of death for him. The environment is suffocating, and he feels like he could throw up at the smell, but he still sits there at your side so loyally. He doesn’t trust doctors much either, not that there’s any particularly strong reason for that one. He especially doesn’t trust them with your well-being (he doesn’t trust anyone but himself with your well-being.)

He’ll hold your hand tightly in his, and he’ll talk to you about anything. Seriously, anything even stupid shit like the cacti around blazewood and what they look like. Anything to keep you talking and make sure that you’re alive and well despite the scare.

He’ll drape his jacket over you because it’s always freezing cold in the ER. If it’s so bad, he’ll take your hands in his and blow on them until they’re warm. God forbid any of the machines make any noise other than steady beeping, he’s ready to lean out the door and shout if you don’t call him down.

He’s just scared, okay. He’s terrified to lose someone again, especially someone so important to him. His worry manifests as over monitoring every little thing that happens. Just let him sit there and press kisses to your fingertips and he listens to you ramble on and on about sweet nothings.

If you try to comfort him or apologize or focus on anything other than feeling better yourself, he’ll hush you like a scolding mother. Yes, he feels bad right now, but he would rather you not focus on that. You can talk about it after you’re home and rested, until then he’s going to focus on your care.

Like, fuck man he hates hospitals, but he hates the idea of losing you forever way more than anything like that.
