I think one of my favorite things about FF7 is how genuinely alien Gaia is. I think people gloss over how different this world is compared to ours and I don't just mean magic. Gaia doesn't have plate tectonics, or if it does it doesn't work the same as our world. The Lifestream isn't just a metaphysical space, it's a physical ocean under the crust of the Planet that acts of in a similar fashion to the mantle of Earth. The Lifestream can flow to the surface and tear apart the land or piece it back together in whatever way it sees fit. It can sink or create entire landmasses at random.
It can flow in ways to create a lush paradise or concentrate so heavily in areas they become borderline toxic. The Nibel Mountains (while I know part of their problem is there's been a reactor there for 40+ years; do remember Nibel is facing the same problem of ecological collapse the Midgar Wastes are, so that's why it looks Like That. Nibel is just lucky it had one little town instead of a giant city) are essentially Gaia's version of active volcanoes, just without the heat of magma and lava. The Lifestream is also so close that those mountains were intimately tied with the cycle of life and death in Nibel probably for generations. Rhadore, similarly, was a volcanic archipelago, and her people knew that well. Shinra? They refused to listen as they always do.
The Lifestream itself is also one of the most animist concepts I've ever seen in fiction. It is All Life. Everything upon Gaia is intimately woven into the fabric of the Lifestream; plants, animals, rocks, rivers, oceans, Everything. It contains all memories that have ever existed and will ever exist upon Gaia. The Lifestream is the movement of the waves, the rushing course of rivers, the memories of materia, the slopes of the mountains, the rustling of plants and leaves, it is the souls of all things, it is mortal and gods alike.
The world we see in FF7 proper is a fantasy world that is slowly being consumed by capitalism and a cyberpunk hellscpe (those are often the same things). It is a fantasy world that has forgotten what it once was, what it still is. It is about a people who have been utterly disconnected from the very river of life that created and sustains them.
And I just think that's neat.
#final fantasy vii#final fantasy 7#ff7#ffvii#ff7 remake#ff7 rebirth#ff7 ever crisis#tagging all that cause is used information from all the games#gaia is such a fascinating fictional world and tbh i think people flatten it a lot#there's Flavor here#it's a really really cool flavor

I finally beat ff7 Rebirth after several months of playing it! I'm in so much grief right now, I don't even know what to say because there's so much I want to talk about
It was just such a beautiful game that made me fall harder for the characters I was already so in love with. Remake was good and I enjoyed it, but Rebirth to me just felt kind of perfect? It has some flaws, but I just loved how it didn't feel entirely like the second part of a remake. There were moments I didn't expect that had me in shock, and moments that still had me feeling the same sadness I felt during the og. I didn't even really stop to take screenshots the way I did with Remake because I didn't want to interrupt my own experience. The soundtrack was so wonderfully composed. All of the characters were so lovely. I have no idea how they're going to make part 3 top it, but I'm so excited for the conclusion
And they made Sephiroth Reborn so pretty 💕
Like uhhhhhhhhh smash ofc
Now I will play Crisis Core 🥰
#ff7#final fantasy 7#final fantasy vii#ffvii#ff7 rebirth#one of my favorite games ever#i'm so sad i'm done with it now ouuuuuuggghhhhh#but i'll be playing it again cuz i also preordered on steam YAYY#but now that i finished it i'll start posting again! i was just close to the end and wanted to spend some time with it

I would like to add: Since we have no way to admire Vincent without his cape, and maybe we should wait for some kind soul who will make a mod in the PC version to remove it, I can imagine that this shoulder "pauldrons" are "tied together" by some sort of buckles. It came to my mind because I saw the movie Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim" (beautiful movie) and the cousin of the main character, Fréaláf Hildeson, wears shoulder pads and you can clearly see how they are joined by a sort of collar. You can see it in this image:
In the image you can see the collar that connects the two pauldrons. Unfortunately I can't find many images of him on the web (this is the best one I could find), but I assure you that there are many shots where you can see how they are connected: both front and back. So I think that Vincent's pauldrons, although different in design, obviously follow the same rule.
Vincent Valentine Pauldron Reference
Notes:
There are three pieces, not four; the last one features an accent that looks like another layer, but is clearly part of the same piece.
Taken together, they appear to be modeled off Chaos' wings, featuring the same number of curves and peaks, with similar placement, spacing, and proportionality.
The accents on the topmost layer are anyone's guess; they start with two smooth curves, but could end up anywhere.
There's no way to tell how they look closest to his neck, but I've based this on the outline visible through his mantle, so hopefully it's close!
EDITING TO ADD: These are called pauldrons, the armor on his boots are called sabatons, the armor on his legs are called greaves and the armor on his hip is called a tasset. (I assume everyone already knows the word gauntlet, but for completion's sake, that's what he's wearing on his left hand/forearm!)
Happy arting!

Time for more parallels!
Both Tifa and Sephiroth have their doubt about themselves, about what they want, that they're aware that there's something wrong with them/their action.
But while Tifa avoids anticipating in things she doesn't believe in
or asks for help (in this case from Cloud).
And when the consequence hits, Tifa takes full responsibility for it.
Yet she doesn't give up on herself.
Sephiroth, on the other hand, locks himself up,
clings onto whatever can justify his doubt,
and at the end, let it dominate his reasons and humanity.
and never considers himself the one in the wrong again.
Tifa, despite all of her anger, sadness, and painful memories, refuses to let them shape her entirely. She still sees the world as something worth love and fighting for. There's still hope.
Sephiroth however, with all his anger, sadness, and painful memories, burns the world down himself. In his eyes, his will is absolute truth over everything else. What would wait for him at the end but emptiness?
Bro’s sadder expressions were deliberate, we weren’t crazy. He didn’t shut down all of his emotions. He felt sad about losing himself and becoming a monster and unleashing hell and bloodshed but he just “burnt the sadness away” and walked into the flames, throwing all of his humanity away for the last time and that’s what this scene means…
