[the voice of an arospec whose relationship to romantic attraction has undergone changes over time] So ive spent a LOT of time thinking about this. And I believe Ive come to some sort of answer! For myself, at least. Certainly not for everyone.

Attraction speaks in large part to what you want to do with that person. If I want to be someones friend, i could consider that a platonic attraction. I want to spend time with them, hear about their life, make them happy, etc etc normal friend things. And its not the same for all your friends, you might want some things out of a relationship with one friend that you dont want from another friend. Maybe expectations of spending more time together, being more emotionally vulnerable, etc. And its good when you and your friends expectations for your relationship line up. If you have a friend that wants things from you that you dont want with them, that stinks!

Romantic attraction is pretty similar. You also probably want to do friend things with your romantic partner. But there are other things that you might want with that person. More time together, more vulnerable, maybe even more physically intimate, sexual or otherwise. It can be whatever, as long as you agree on it with your partner(s).

But to me, someone who has struggled with what a romantic relationship is for a long time—how do i know if i want something if i dont know what it is? Do i just like the idea of it?—there is one difference that is a constant. My desire to build a life around this person. Or a desire to spend a lot of time figuring out if its a good idea. You want this person to become someone where if you go, ‘hey i really want to move across the country and i want you to come with me,’ theyll go ‘yes, i want to stay with you.’ Ive had plenty of variety among other expectations like spending time and physical intimacy (im also ace), but that desire has always been there.

But at the end of the day, its all self-definable. Someone could also have all of the above expectations and consider their relationship queerplatonic, or even friendship (in that case thats a cool friend). Really i think the expectations of the relationship are more important than whatever label is slapped on.

And as a side note: I think this is what can be very frustrating to aro people in terms of their friendships. They want to have relationship feature A with their friends, but their allo friends only like having feature A with their romantic partners, because if they have feature A, they also want B and C to be present in the relationship as well. And yeah, it is really frustrating. I think it would be cool if it was more common to communicate expectations as friends. Everyone always says to communicate these things with romantic partners because with higher expectations, it can get more complicated. But friendships have a lot of the same features!

Ok but, regarding TMAGP 27, I can't stop thinking about Jonah writing, after sending Archibald to a certain death, "It is done, and I am surprised to find how little remorse I feel." It reminds me of his statement in MAG 160:

"The discovery, not simply of the dark and horrible reality of the world in which you live, but that you would quite willingly doom that world and confine the billions in it to an eternity of terror and suffering, all to ensure your own happiness, to place yourself beyond pain and death and fear. I will never get tired of little details about his life being revealed (regardless of the timeline/dimension) because the parallel between his discovery of the supernatural world and the discovery of his own true self and the things he's capable of is so interesting and compelling to me.

Along with the knowledge of the horrors that exist in his world comes the horror of the realization that he might be capable of anything to stop feeling scared and vulnerable, to put himself over everybody else if necessary. Every time curiosity leads him into a new experiment, a new sacrifice in the name of knowledge, he lets go a little bit of himself and his morality. And then, as it happened with Archibald, and as it happened with Barnabas in another world, he feels surprised of how easy it was. Of how he doesn't feel regret or grief, how at most he finds himself thinking that it was all a pity. I think people overestimate how feminist team black is. If someone brings up how Baela should be the heir to Driftmark, it's always "she would've been Queen if not for the Greens!", ignoring that 1, she would be Queen consort, not a Queen in her own right, and 2 she has a legitimate claim in her own right to Driftmark. Team Black's goal is to crown Rhaenyra, but Rhaenyra becoming Queen isn't a win for feminism because it does nothing to dismantle the rest of the patriarchal system that exists in Westeros. I'm at the painful "confession" scene during the kage summit arc. It really is so emotional, but also... hm.

When I was younger, like 13 or so, I was a big Sakura and Naruto shipper. They were the first pairing I read fanfic for even. And in a way, I do still enjoy the two of them together... but it's moments like these that really drive home the fact that it Doesn't really work in canon. Not the way that it's set up.

As Sakura puts it, "Sasuke, Sasuke, Sasuke! That's all you think about!"

She's told that Naruto has feelings for her and decides to use it to convince him to stop going after Sasuke. She does love him, but not in the way she's trying to confess. The love they share is one of comradery, not necessarily romantic. The love of two people who have gone through such pain together, and who have leaned on each other throughout it all. And the fact that she's turning around and saying she loves him "simply like everyone else", now... it's trivializing. And the fact that she's trying to convince him of this, the fact that she thinks she Can convince him of this, is pretty hurtful. They've come a long way from when they were kids, Naruto the goofball vying for her attention while she yelled at him for being stupid. Sakura respects Naruto so much more than before, and Naruto respects her too. So the fact that she's still doing this... She's desperate, really. She thinks the promise he made to her to bring Sasuke home is what's driving him to let himself be hurt over and over and over again in the pursuit and protection of Sasuke.

But she's wrong.

That may be part of it, but it's only part. Naruto wants Sasuke back for himself, too. He let himself be beat up to avoid selling him out. He chases after him with single minded determination. Sasuke is his entire drive to get stronger, to catch up, to bring him home. Sasuke, Sasuke, Sasuke indeed.

As it is, Naruto knows she's lying to herself. And no matter what she says, he will keep going after Sasuke. Because that's just the person that Naruto is.
