Anyway time to explain some shit

The boy on the left is regular Tom and the one on the right is him halfway transformed Teefers too big for him mouth and I'm just now realizing I forgot to draw Tom's snake bites and other earrings fuck me oml Oh and he gets fuzzier cause in order to transform to and fro his demon form his body speeds up the growth process to help with the pain (something that developed, it was not instantaneously there and it's not perfect, the process is still INCREDIBLY painful he does not enjoy it)

Anyway, I wanted to say that usually a demon's horns (in my headcanon anyway) usually represent age, but there are certain sins that don't follow this rule such as Wrath and Lust, instead their horns represent power and status more than anything (the larger the horns, the more powerful you're considered and better treated you are in society) but even then not every demon will have horns, like Envy or Sloth

To explain my demon hierarchy and world building would take several posts and multiple AO3 books for everyone to properly understand it the way I see it but just know that there are 7 sins, the seven deadly sins, that each demon falls under (more or less, anyway), there are the original sins, the children they created asexually like starfish do and then their children mingling together and creating different races of demons and complex hybrids,,, pretty much every demon you see will be a mutt save for very high class demons (such as the OG sins and the demons that have the most "pure" blood of their predecessors)

Tom's demon, is really fucking weird in that regard because yes, his Demon is a full Rage Demon or in other words, a perfect demon of Wrath but it's like... Artificially made. And no one knows how

But yeah it's super freaky and he's like one of the few things that could give demons themselves the sense of uncanny valley

Tom is based off of two things, besides demons n dragons ofc: Snakes and Spiders. I fucking hate spiders you have no idea how much looking this shit up sucked

Anyway his venom is stored in his teeth like how spiders are, but he's got a very snake-ish mouth. And can open his jaw super fucking wide like a snake or certain species of spiders can. To the best is a very simplified side profile example of that,,,, maybe I should make some body horror art of him with his fully extended jaw like some freak ass spider. That'd give me nightmares. Which I guess is the point.

I put too much time and effort into that mouth, please appreciate it

Diving a bit deeper into my demon world building lore that's been brewing in my head for nearly a decade now (yikes that hurts to think about) demons have different builds, Pride and Lust tend to be very similar to society's standards of beauty (ever changing as humans adapt, so do demons... hmmm) versus Gluttony and Wrath tending to be more nightmarish and your run of the mil cryptid you'd see in the woods when you were fucking around where you shouldn't be

Symbol of Wrath

Every House or Sin has their own symbol, usually reserved for the original sins, but Tom is a special case because,,, reasons I'm not disclosing at the moment cause I think it's silly and shit or whatever I dunno I guess I'm embarrassed to explain it? For some reason? Anyway back to this

Nothing more to explain about it really, just that Tom has this marking on his monster form's chest and that's the black mark on the previous picture,,, except it's not actually fully black like that, it was just too tiny to get the details right so I decided to do the next best thing lol

It's a lion with horns that can be interpreted as Scorpion Tails, because the sin of Wrath is usually associated with Lions, Bears, Dragons and I think Scorpions fit, too, makes me think of the scorpion and the frog

Anyway that's my rant about headcanons I put too much thought, time and effort into that three people will read lol

continuing our birb discussion... i wanted to ask, are there any real purple birbs?

Mmmmm it's 4am rn bcuz I'm a bit of a fool and was drawing my Dungeons and Dragons Owlin character sooo beware my rambling and nonsense ahah ;;

Anyways! There are so many purple birds out there, it's very lovely. However you said "real" purple birds and I may be overthinking this cuz it's late but it reminded me about how blue isn't a real color on birds because there's nothing in a bird's diet that allows for that sort of blue pigmentation. Yknow how bell peppers can be like...red and yellow? Yeah it's cuz they have some antioxidants called carotenoids that create the red/yellow/orange pigmentation. (Pink flamingos are pink cuz shrimp...what would blue birds eat to make them blue? There's really not a blue fruit out there. Don't say blueberries.) And the answer researchers found out for blue on birds feathers is cuz of light wavelength.

Protein structure specifically keratin in their feathers (stuff ur nails and hair is made up of!) kinda refract the blue wavelengths and since all color we see are the colors that aren't absorbed...well. blue!

But for purple--and this is a guess cuz im pulling this out from what i remember of my nutrition class--purple may be their true color. Cuz carotenoids can also mix and match structurally and allow for some green and off kilter blue pigmentation to occur. And yknow. Blue and red = purple.

So. Maybe purple birds. Will do research later. But there are many. Many lovely ones that we can actually see. For example, and my favorite cuz I participated in a volunteer opportunity for these guys:

Purple Martins! What lovely guys, they flock in the hundreds. Seeing these guys pass by overhead was so cool. Ok maybe they're a bit more indigo but they're adorable regardless.

Though if you want a very very vibrant purple.

Violet-backed Starlings. What a banger bird. This bird just knew how to win in the fashion show. This tone of purple with white? Urgh. Slaps. Iridescent too.. lovely.

these quartz! i was told they are some type of quartz! these are special to me because i got them a year ago during a school trip to germany - i only had a few euros on me and i ended up spending it all on gems. we checked out the christmas markets and there was an friendly old fellow who was selling gemstones and other things! he even had a cutter and could speak english. we chatted a bit and i listened to him talk about things (like how these lil fellas are formed. i know nothing about chemicals but i just think these things are interesting!!!! i actually get most my gems from giftshops near cave tours because i love visiting them and think it's interesting ^^

anyways he had a little box of various "rocks" that could possibly be geodes that he'd cut and see if they are! the price depended on their size. he said that i could guess with the weight and feel of the "rock" and let me pick from a few that could possible be ones. i said it didn't matter to me if it's gonna be hollow or not, since it's cool to me anyways!

so while my classmates waited and stared at me i just watched this guy cut it nicely in half like this - and he then even cut the smaller flatter piece of it, too. it was very nice! it's also where i bought the tooth, the bismuth, and some other things that i forgot as well... oops. i got a lot of gems

this shimmery pretty goldstone / aventurine glass ! wacky picture quality but i don't feel like getting new pics (+ im on pc now) (lie: i ended up getting new pics later)

Lol, I totally hear ya. The "sunshine on the outside, depression on the inside" is one of my favs too. I was telling Liv all about it and how Wukong was similar to my biggest blorbo of all time and I stuck with the show bc I wanted to see more of him after the pilots. And THEN Macky showed up and uh oh.

"You don't have to be so you about it." HMMM. *shakes you frantically* YES YOU GET HOW DEVASTATING IT IS???? MACKY SOUNDS SO GUILTY THERE SO HEARTBROKEN SO ASHAMED. HEY MK WHAT WAS THAT ABOUT BEST FRIENDS AGAIN- *dragged off stage* but LIKE it's not like he could have done anything, only the Monk could 😔 I wonder if Macky used his shadows to escape? Maybe thought it was too hard to get to Wukong and he wouldn't want the Brotherhood captured too right 🤷‍♀️ since Wukong cares about them sm as his friends. They were cornered, Wukong lost the battle, you save more people by fleeing. "Cause normally you just RUSH to my rescue." I love this fight because it's also utterly nuanced, like you can understand both their frustrations. Thinking. Thinking about how the image of Wukong is so often the undefeatable Monkey King whose so strong...is that what he wants tho. Oh, but it's so hard for him to appear weak to others he wants to be the strongest he just said that BUT BUT BUT- and OOF at Macky's hurt expression here *chefs kiss* so tasty. It's good that he was trying to remove himself from the situation lest something happen but uh, oops. too many comments there Wukong. MACKY SNAPPED. "You're the one who wouldn't quit while we were ahead!" SO MUCH GRIEF IN THAT FAYE SO MUCH GRIEFFF- im going crazy. "Everything I did was for us!" the rough texture to his voice 0.0 "You did it for yourself! You've become like this...obsessive demon!" SHRIEKING I'm so crazy for Macky who just emotionally snaps like the things he says!! in the heat of the moment it all just getting spat out!! WUKONG's FACE HERE IS EVERYTHING HE CANNOT BELIEVE WHAT HE JUST HEARD and the way his expression twists into anger YESS LOVEEE. I know what it's like to be hiss growl trying to hold on while someone else yelling bonks into your brain like that. You think it was hard to hold back during what killed Macky? Like needing to break a pencil except it was his skull haha..... "I told you going against the Jade Emperor was a bad idea..." ONCE AGAIN SO MUCH GRIEF HERE BOTH ME AND MACKY SOUNDS LIKE HE'S GOING TO CRYYY. I love the shakiness in his voice as he steels it to be stronger. And then the peach <3 the symbol and bridge of friendship and acceptance and holding hands <3 shattered, and "I really wanted that peach." WUKONG 😔 they cannot communicate. And Macky's magic ears probably heard that comment about not wanting to see him again.

So, I've been wondering, when did Shanks and Buggy join the Roger pirates? they're already there at like 9-10 years old (30-29 years before present time, during oden's first 2 years with whitebeard) and Shanks even had the strawhat already!

But I get this feeling that they joined the crew as little babies! a couple things stand out to me. First of all, this panel is constantly on my mind:

Considering Ace won't be born til after Roger's death, and no other Roger pirate has kids (or is a kid) as far as we know, them mentioning it's been a long time since they've held a baby and that it feels nostalgic feels super intentional on Oda's part.

Like they had babies on board (wonder if they had a bumper sticker for that lmao) some years ago but not recently, and tiny Shanks and tiny Buggy are about 13 at this point, so, while being kids, they haven't been babies for years obviously. I know parents with older kids get all nostalgic when they get to hold a baby, I think it's cute.

Speaking of their age though:

This meeting between Roger, Whitebeard and Oden happens 4 years into Oden's travels, 26 years ago, when Buggy and Shanks were about 13. And 13 years prior is when Roger apparently had already reached the end of the grand line, just not to Laugh Tale, which is an interesting detail to me.

Now this proves the Roger pirates were already around, to pick up a couple babies with no family to care for them or something. But it also makes me wonder where they were found. I'm certain Shanks has mentioned he's from the West Blue, so I'm not saying he is from Lodestar Island but I do feel like we're missing info here. hmmm. Where'd you get these kiddos, Roger?? did he find them as lil babies?

Funny that aaaaaaall the way back in ch. 1 Shanks kept insisting on not bringing Luffy along because he was too young, encouraging him to wait til he was older to leave the island. Wonder if that was intentional as well, huh?

Anyways, please do let me know if I've missed something important (there's a lot of info out there after all) and idk, add your thoughts if you feel like it.

Something that confuses me is that Shanks is from West Blue but Buggy is listed as being from the Grand Line... I guess they could've simply been taken in at different points as well, or one was moved to a different place before joining Roger. Hmmmm

EDIT 2.0: FILM RED EDITION because I added this to a rb I think, but not here. The movie confirms that Shanks was probably adopted into the crew as a lil baby, since finding Uta reminds him of that. My heart 💜 who are these people leaving babies in treasure chests anyways?

He mentions that Luffy is a bit too rowdy to join him, since Uta just waits in the ship and he could never sit still while adventure happens elsewhere which. Valid lmao. I do think him leaving Uta behind shows he was concerned for their safety too. Oda pls I want mooooore. And more Uta too BRING HER BACK

Hmmm to find things I haven't shared with you:

A lot of the inspiration for the more benign aspects of this AU is going to come from my experience with two litters: the one that resulted in Jolie, my lil bastard runt, and Miss Thing + Pam, my Gorls my Criturs

However, a lot of the more dramatic beats are just... inspired by how hard life is for abandoned cats and kittens in general. Because as cute as kittens are, unwanted cats are a real problem and everyone loses when unplanned litters happen :c

I figure Percy actually named Curio - he noticed this pretty cat started hanging around the workshop a month or so before the events of the story. He built her some shelters to keep her warm in the worst of the chill - she was very curious but terrified of him, and he had never seen a stray cat with her colors: hence, Curio. (I asked @insyndiar for name ideas SO nkjgrtn <3)

My backstory for Curio is that she was someone's pet, a kitten taken home by a family who never had cats before. She didn't get spayed before her first heat and got out, and when her owners realized she was pregnant they just... dumped her because they couldn't afford to get her spayed, let alone feed and house a litter of kittens. She's very lost, scared and confused, and hardly more than a kitten herself. :C I figure if she got inside, with consistent meals and care, she'd be quite the sweetheart.

There are plenty of other options for housing the kittens: most sensibly, Percy can just take them on and bring them to his house (ok bourgeoisie boy) instead of practically moving in with Vex. It's just that his place is 40 minutes away, so they first bring the kittens to Vex's to warm them up, and from there it's just... too much of a bother to move them. (Also Vex knows Percy has little experience with animals so she'd rather be on standby in case he calls in a panic because one of them is dreaming and twitching in its sleep and Vex is this normal??)

And for some more AUs!

Let's start with some One for sorrow / Two for joy HCs I'm not sure I'll squeeze into the sequel fic or not:

Allura has PTSD now :D yay :D I'm not sure how much I can devote to it, but being Feebleminded for several days with little food and water, with a dragon and his army actively hunting you? Yeah that'll fuck a girl up. Still unsure if she'll keep her position on the Council or retire as a result.

OOC, the same mixup as canon happens when Grog has Kaylie draw a card from the Deck: Matt initially thinks it's the card for the random magic item, but later retcons it to be the curse. So Kaylie's cursed now! Make of that what you will. :)

I had thought up a scene were Percy and Cass visit some graveless gravestones placed in their parents' and siblings' names before the Thordak fight - however, given how long the chapter was getting + the fact neither Vex nor Vax would see it, I kept it to myself. It would have really made it obvious Percy had decided to leave VM once the world was safe. The remaining de Rolos really just ended up talking about what they remembered of their family, how their people would remember them, and what to do going forward. Cass absolutely made a comment about Vex being nobility as soon as she got the paperwork filed, so, y'know, perfectly suitable to court (they certainly have room in their little family for her), which made Percy Unusually Solemn instead of blushy.

As soon as VM left, Cass cornered Percy in his workshop and absolutely fucking chewed him out. He has friends, he has freedom, things she's absolutely dreamed of having these last five years, and he just - he just threw that all away? She eventually quiets when she realizes he's not responding, he's just so drained and focused on his project. They eventually settle for a hug and some quiet support.

Trinket is actually pretty happy with Cass! He misses Vex of course, but trusts Vax to protect her. Galdric? Verdict's out on Galdric - bears and wolves don't get along as a rule, but this one smells of power and ancient magics.

Oh god this is getting so long erfkneknger uhhh one more AU, let's sayyyy Bashter 2/3 Vampire AU:

Yasha was turned by Obann, which caused her whole Orphanmaker thing and is why she easily get swayed under his control under Bazzoxan despite, yknow, being a vampire in this AU.

I think Jester almost dies, for good, in the final fight against Lucien. Somehow Yasha turns her into a vampire to avoid this, which - severely miffs half the party. But Yasha was just forced to help kill this thing who still is, deep down, her best friend. She's not thinking straight and she can't lose anyone else.

Beau and Yasha help Jester adapt to the whole creature of the night thing. It's a weird irony, that adventurous Jester is forced to become more sedentary like her mom and dad as a result of the whole 'burning in the sunlight' thing. Yasha, being a nomad, has some helpful tips for handling it, but it's definitely a harsh learning curve.

I feel Bad about excluding Fjord from this after watching the M9 reunited, given he and Jester are so fucking cute together there. So? I guess it's Bashter + Fjester. Tusks and fangs look very cute together when they're smiling earnestly at eachother. Fjord was very conflicted about Jes being a vampire initially, given he's familiar with being beholden to terrible power, and keeps gently prodding her to be honest about her feelings about the less pleasant sides to it. So like Polynein with only half the Nein while Cad, Caleb, Veth, Essek and Kingsley all just watch this with varying levels of confusion.

Essek whips up a simple cousin to the light-blocking spell of Rosohna he enchants to the Bashter home, so they don't need to worry quite as much about carefully keeping the windows drawn. He makes a Very Specific Face when Jester makes jokes about him totally being a vampire too.

Moth 100%. I've had this oc for years now and they've had alot of growth in the process! Moth went from little baby me in high school making a Sky: Children of the Light oc, to somehow becoming an allegorical shapeshifting reality bending cryptic avatar of my imagination/self consciousness. I love them so much and I put them everywhere. They are truly a guilty pleasure when it comes to my ocs 😂

So yeah, whenever you see this gremlin anywhere in the stuff I make just know that it's a little nod from me that what your looking at may not be all it seems and that things are about to get a little crazy!

Hmmm now this is tricky since I love world building and alot of the ocs I make usually just slip right into an already created world OR I just make a whole new world if I like their character enough, and the story for them follows suit. However, I do have some right now that just don't really fit anywhere:

Zuri: (The Flower Child)

My BABY my LOVE my CHILD I love Zuri she is a wholesome lil girl and I want so badly to put her into a story but for the LIFE OF ME I haven't been able to figure out where she goes >:[[

She is a part of a species called the Eeliytes, and the description for the species is as follows:

The Eeliytes (Eels for short), are soft, malleable, highly adaptive, and semi-shapeshifting humanoid creatures that can change their RNA to adapt to basically any circumstance. They can morph their bodies into many different shapes and fit into almost any space (not full shapeshifting more-like how an octopus can change their shape and squeeze into any opening as big as their beak) they can even change their body's temperature and infrared structure to completely avoid temperature and infrared based detection. They are very skilled in harvesting/channeling raw plasma/energy to make and do incredible things (can channel plasma in a way in which humans would describe as magic). They are very carefree and playful in nature and are known for their well-versed scholars and powerful intellect.

Lyla: The Shadow Mother or "Great Shadow"

I've had this old lady around for quite some time! She is one of my first ever ocs (back when I was obsessed with dragons weren't we all) and has stayed with me ever since. She was actually one of my first digital paintings too! Back then I didn't have any layers either so oof there are some parts of it that haven't aged well compared to my digital painting skills now, but honestly I'm still proud of that painting and have Lyla to thank for getting me into what I love!

(I should really do an update digital painting of her sometime)

Funny enough she's always been an enigma since I ever created her, so maybe it just fits her character more that she doesn't really exists anywhere, but I still love her anyways and I'll find some way to include her in stuff (っ◔◡◔)っ ❤

Now this man is also an oldie I've had for a LONG time. I've had him just as long if not longer than Lyla. The difference between him and Lyla, however, is that he CANONICALLY doesn't fit anywhere and he likes it that way. He's a character that exists on the outside of everything, and is more that an observer than an actual character within my stories. Things also get strange when he's around but don't worry he's nice if only a little strict.

I like to think him and Lyla are friends :D

Ayvos: The Natatori Merchant

Ayvos is a more recent character I've made that was actually inspired off of a dream I had! The dream was about a merman swimming around in the ocean with his trusty sack collecting things to sell to others, so I basically made a whole species around him and made him a merchant because of the dream :D

I don't have much for this guy yet, but I recently thought of some really cool outfit ideas for him so I might return to draw him some more, and it would be nice to get this poor man clothed XD

He is a part of a species called the Natatories, and the description for the species is as follows:

The Natatories (Kelpies for short), are usually nomadic, amphibious/marine-like entities who have a body similar to that of a centaur, and are able to control chromatophores within their skin to help them fully camouflage themselves (basically the same way cuttlefish, octopus, or chameleons change their skin color). They are so good at it that they can basically become invisible from any external presence (which they use for hunting/stealth purposes), and sometimes can change their skin to become completely transparent to show off their translucent organs (which they can sometimes use to communicate nonverbally and/or from a long distance). However, they can't change their body's temperature like the Eeliytes can, and therefore can't hide from temperature or infrared detection. They often keep close together in tight-knit herds, and are very powerful hunters, providers, and warriors with a strong code of defending the peace. However, many also take up the trading profession, so some individuals leave their herd and don't stay in one place for two long.

OH THIS IS A GOOD ONE!! God I could go on forever with this but my favorites have to be found family/domestic family stuff, plus soft/cute relationship stuff and I have just the ocs for it!

-Hunter and Zenir BY FAR are my favorites for this category they're my g/t bois (Hunter is the giant/human and Zen is the human/tiny) and I love them so much. Hunter is just a big soft himbo man and Zen is a small feral warrior who has a special place in his heart for his man 😭 They are just two idiots in love and I would die for them your honor. They are literally the only characters I've ever had aus for but in every single one they fall in love, just for the fact that THEIR LOVE TRANSCENDS REALITY. Tldr I love my g/t gay bois.

-Tomar, Gabby, and Jack are on this list for obvious reasons cause Tomar is a monster goliath-like man who went and just up and adopted two human kids (the siblings Gabby and Jack) and they are so wholesome together Tomar is just the best father oc in the world he's so nice!

-Leilani and Ogden are another g/t family on this list, I have drawn them before, and I posted the drawing on Tumblr which you can see here, but when I did Leilani was slightly older than when I usually put her at, cause in their main story SHE'S JUST A BABY. Literally, Ogden finds this little baby with no family and just decides to keep her and raise her as his own. This toddler and giant are so soft and cute together I want to draw more of them so badly.

-Melody and Callie are very close runner ups for this category since they are such close friends they are basically siblings. Melody is a human sized bug monster child who is a wholesome lil bean and Callie is a sentient calico mouse who is not afraid of anything. These two are both children and get up to so much chaos together hehehe 😈

Honestly I've been super busy, especially right now getting prepared for my final senior semester starting soon (still can't believe I'm going to graduate soon 😵) and I'm working on a bunch of stuff like work stuff and commissions so I'm just everywhere right now lol. Kind of stressed, HOWEVER this year has been amazing, and mentally I couldn't be better! I found this community this year and it's been so incredible. I can't thank everyone enough with how open and welcoming you guys are! I've done so much this year and I'm very proud of what I've worked on, even though I've felt overworked at times. But! I hope once I'm out of college I'll have much more time to work on the big projects I've been wanting to tackle and interact more with the community!

Excerpt from an old fic - "The Snapes' Last Christmas"

Hogwarts, December, before the Christmas break, before the Courtyard scene, Severus’s 5th year

“Why do I hear rumours that you’re going to stay here over Christmas?” Lily asked Severus in mock-outrage.

“That depends, Lil. Is Potter leaving for Christmas?” He answered her with an earnest question.

“’Course he is,” she told him.

“Then I am staying. I’ll finally get some actual studying done in this place.”

“Oh, don’t be like that, Sev!” Lily pleaded with him. “Who wants to be at school over Christmas break? It’s time to be with family!”

Good one, Severus thought to himself. “You haven’t been to Christmas at our house, though, have you?”

Lily looked down. “I know. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it like that. I meant… Come home for me!”

For a change, refusing her came easy. “Why don’t you stay here?” He asked his friend.

“No way. My parents will kill me. And I miss the little Muggle town! Come on!”

Lily might have had something to miss over there; Severus did not. The only place worse than school was home, and with Potter gone, school wouldn't be that bad.

“Drop it, Lily, I’m not spending another Christmas with Tobias asking why I didn’t bring him anything from that good-for-nothing wanker wizarding town when he doesn’t send me any money. You have fun though.”

She looked hurt. “So that’s it? You’re leaving me alone with Petunia?” It was not a welcoming prospect.

“What about all your Muggle friends?” He asked her, not without a note of bitterness. “Why don’t you spend your break with them?”

That’s great, Lily thought to herself. He was just trying to make her beg him to come, and she knew it.

“Well, I can’t tell them about magic, for one. Two, my parents told everyone I’m going to some posh private boarding school, and we don’t learn any Muggle subjects here and all my friends will expect me to be clever and I will feel like an idiot. Three, they’ll all want to talk about movies and records, and I haven’t seen a movie or heard a record in ages. Don’t you miss it at all? The movies?”

She doesn’t get it, does she? “Hey Tobias, can I get some money to go to the movies with my freak witch friend, please? How do you expect this to work out, Lil?” She forgot, sometimes, how awful he was. Good for her, Severus thought. Then she suggested he use magic, as if he was stupid to not have thought of it before.

“You can try Summoning his wallet, the last time I tried that I was limping for a week.”

Lily started to look exasperated, or maybe Severus imagined it. “Then I’ll get my mum to buy you tickets. Come on, is this what this is about? Money? Because we can study at my house, you know, mum and dad will be pleased.”

Severus did not need her charity. He wasn’t the one so desperate to go to the movies.

“Just ask Potter to spend Christmas with you. He’ll fly his stupid Nimbus 1000 across the entire United Kingdom for you twice, I reckon.”

Why does he have to tease me about James? It’s not my fault he fancies me. It’s not like I like his stupid stunts.

“Maybe Malfoy will give you a couple of Sickles, if you don’t tell him it’s so that you can go to the movies with a big Mudblood!”

Why are we fighting? She is the one who came to me!

“I don’t think you’re a mudblood, Lily, stop it,” he told her. Besides, Lucius had been busy. The last time Lucius had written him was weeks ago, and even that letter was really short. Lucius had been learning fascinating magic, though, so who could blame him? Much more useful than the rubbish they were teaching Severus at Hogwarts, he reckoned. There was magic out there he could really use, and he could not wait to use it all on Tobias… on the glorified trolls that made it their job to make his life as miserable as possible…

Lily noticed he was no longer in the same conversation as her. “A knut for your thoughts?”

“Nothing, honest.”

“So you’ll come?” She asked him. “Please? Pretty please? We don’t have to go to the movies. We don’t have to do anything. I just want you home with me.” She looked at him with a devilish spark in her eyes and almost sung: “and it will drive Petunia crazy.”

“I’ll think about it.”

“Yes!” Lily exclaimed, and kissed him on the cheek. “I knew I could count on you!”

She ran off to join a group of giggling girls. Shocked, Severus remained where he was and touched his hot cheek. Currents ran up and down his body. Now he had to go. You’re good, Evans, he thought.

Spinner’s End, Christmas Eve, Severus’s fifth year

Of course, Tobias did not let Severus go to the Evanses for Christmas dinner. It'd been like that every year - a Christmas dinner with no decorations, with no guests, with his mother looking especially miserable (of course, this year he knew why). Every year, it was only the three Snapes sitting there while Tobias angrily barked at them to look happy. Not that he ever looked happy - he looked drunk. And mean.

“My own son wants to spend Christmas Eve with the redhead freak uptown and my own wife can’t be cheerful on this holy day to save her life.” Great, Tobias has something to say. He never shuts up.

“You know, they invited us. All of us. Even you. It was very nice of them, and it was very rude of us not to come,” Severus said. He knew his cheek would cost him, but he didn’t care.

“Rude, am I? They only invited us to show off their posh house, again, you idiot.” Just because they are not dirt poor does not make them “posh”, Severus thought. His father did not even know what posh was. But Severus did - he’d been to the Malfoy Manor.

“They invited us because Lily is my friend, Tobias!” Severus shouted - better go down for the dragon than for the egg.

“I am your father, Severus, your only father, and I certainly don’t want to spend Christmas with yet another abomination!” He waved his knife and fork ominously. “You and your useless mother are bad enough without that little pest running around my house, eating my food, stealing my belt. Don’t think I didn’t know about that, you wanker.”

Now he made Severus angry - well, angrier. “You don’t know anything, Tobias, she is a witch, not a common Muggle thief, she Vanished it!”

Tobias saw weakness, and he pounced. Even when drunk, he was good. An understanding smile spread across his revolting face. He looked like he just got his Christmas present. “She is too pretty for you, you know. She will outgrow you. I’ll bet the house she won’t know who you are by this time next year. She’ll vanish your knob before she comes near it. Pretty girls like her don’t go for gormless, ugly gits like you.”

Right where it hurts. He was that transparent, was he? And who was Tobias to call anyone else ugly? I hate you so much, Tobias.

“Do you ever shut up, Tobias? Or will you actually drop dead if you don’t shout at us? Can you not be a perfect arsehole for once in your life?”

They were nearly hook nose to hook nose, and there was nothing in either of their pairs of black eyes but hatred.

Tobias started undoing his new belt.

“Dinner is over,” he said with one of his special heinous smiles he saved just for his family, and as far as Severus was concerned, dinner could not end soon enough. Eileen hid her face behind her hands. “Don’t, Toby, please, I beg you. Let’s just eat,” she said. But since when did asking nicely get you anywhere in this house?

Severus was getting too big to kick around, but Eileen was getting smaller every year, if anything. Severus managed to run away with minimal damage, but his mother did not. She never even tried.

Moments later, Severus was in his mildewy room, listening to a symphony of plates breaking, Tobias shouting profanities, and the belt cracking.

Not one of your best ideas, Lily, he thought miserably, wondering if she was thinking about him at all.

He stayed awake, because he knew what was about to happen. Tobias would fall asleep and then he and his mother would finally have a moment of peace together. Since he was home, he figured he might as well ask her a few questions.

Sure enough, she quietly made her way to her son’s room as soon as Tobias started to snore.

“He’s a right bastard, you know that, right?” He asked her, as soon as she came in.

“You shouldn’t provoke him, Severus.” She struggled to make her way to his bed and sat with a wince. “I can’t help it, Mum. How can you let him treat you like that?”

“Never mind that now, love. Help your mum. You remember the healing spells you used last year, don’t you?” Severus nodded. “My clever boy. You’re a natural, you know.”

“Hmmm,” Severus grunted as he focused on performing the healing spells on his mother. He watched the swelling go down and the bruises melt away. There was a limit to what he could do with charms alone. If only he had some dittany or murtlap on him… Then you should have thought of that before you let Lily drag you into this miserable holiday.

Then his mother said, “All better. I’m glad you came home, Severus.”

“I ought to have fought him off you.”

“Don’t. I’m glad you didn’t. I’m proud of you. It hurts me more when he does it to you, you know that.”

She got up with effort; the bastard must have got her in places she didn’t want to let her son see.

“Are you going to go to a Muggle hospital, at least?”

“I don’t think so, no. I don’t like hospitals. I’ll be fine.”

He knew, he just knew, she was hiding something from him, and he’s had it. “Mum, I know why you can’t do magic.”

If she had any colour left in her face, she would have lost it there and then. “How?” She asked him, mortified.

“They have old Prophets at Hogwarts, you know.” She gulped. She remembered how the Prophet had told the story, and it was not good - ‘St. Mungo’s experimentalist Eileen Prince kills entire family on Christmas’, she believed, was the exact subtle wording they'd used.

“I’m sorry.” She said, choked up. “I should have told you sooner, Sevy, I’m sorry.”

There was only one thing Severus wanted to know. Well, two.

“If you did this, they deserved it. It’s just… how much worse can they be than him.” His head jerked in the direction of the snoring. “And why won’t you kill him, mum, I mean it.”

Her eyes were wet. Severus hadn’t seen her cry in years.

“They did not deserve it. They were wonderful. It was all my fault, Severus. I didn’t mean it.” She drew a laboured breath and wiped her eyes dry.

“Have you learned about Felix Felicis yet?” She asked him. The official curriculum hadn’t covered the lucky potion yet, but Severus knew what it was.

When she was done with her tale, her son understood everything.

Sitting in the Headmaster’s office, Professor Severus Snape figured since it was almost Christmas, after all, he might as well use a Christmas memory to produce his Patronus. In his mind, he carefully avoided stepping on the landmines of memory that could extinguish even the strongest Patronus, and focused on Lily’s singing voice telling him that “it will drive Petunia crazy” and how she had kissed him on the cheek, and he sent the Doe Patronus to lead her son to the Sword.

Ahaha Lemoni! I love ya sm I’ll do this just for you. I wasn’t gonna elaborate initally because I was like hmmm I don’t know my exact reasons for some of these, but now I have to bc you asked SO

Sunny- Spirited Away. I feel like Spirited Away in a weird way reminds me of headspace? Like I know they actually ended up like in another world, but I also feel like that world was for Chihiro and for her journey into growing up. Just like Sunny’s headspace was for his journey into dealign with tauma (and in a lesser way growing up) Plus all of the different creatures remidn me of all the characters in headspace. I think Sunny would really like this one because it reminds him of his daydreams and his world that he’s creating. There were no dragons in Omori and that’s criminal and I need Sunny to have a dragon character

Basil- Ponyo. So the story in Ponyo is all about like the friendship between this human boy and this lil fish girl and how their (platonic?) but regardless extremely deep bond is able to overcome everything. And I think that Basil would connect deeply to the end where Sosuke just loves Ponyo exactly as she is. This is one of those that I don’t really think I can explain? It reminds me of sunnflower but also how Basil was the last one to join the group and found his first real “family” In them? Ugh I’m probably doing a bad job of this. 

Kel- Princess Mononoke. I think the story in this one would really compel him, even tho I think he would probably be scared of it as a little child. I love the idea of him curled up in Hero’s arms as they watch and hiding his face at the ‘scary’ parts. Hero tries to suggest another movie, but Kel likes this one, so they do the same thing every time. Plus another iconic scene “I’ll cut your throat, that’ll get you to shut up!” “You’re beauiful”....not Kelbrey watching this together later and Kel realizing that he’s always had a thing for girls like this. 

Aubrey- Kiki’s delivery service. So first of all I think young Aubrey definitely likes this one best because it was originally Mari’s favorite. She has some pretty big hero worship for Mari, and so when Mari likes this one, so does Aubrey. Also Aubrey thinks she looks like Kiki (part of why she starts to wear a boy in her hair) I think she also likes the music and thinks it’s really pretty. I’m sure when she’s older she explores the themes a little bit more, but it generally just stays in the realm of a comfort film for her. 

Hero- Grave of the Fireflies. Ooof. Oof okay so let me explain. Hero loves this movie, but he doesn’t recc it to others (unlike all the rest who I think are always pushing their favorite Ghibli movie) I think Hero will literally never watch Grave of the Fireflies with anyone else, because watching it is a special experience for him. I think Hero is someone who like can’t let himself be upset over things in his life? He pushes everything down and away and tries to just be positive, but like when he watches a sad movie he gets to have some cathartic release. He can cry over the movie and be sad over it, but it’s also him letting himself be upset over the other things in his life too. It’s also a movie that shows directly the negative effects of war in a really intimate way. I think Hero is a huge pacifist (ignores the things I wrote in Not Again...wait actaully no I don’t Hero is a pacifist there too) and he puts that down to being shown this movie when he was pretty young. 

Mari- Howl’s Moving Castle. Howl is a very pretty movie and it’s got gorgeous music. I think the music is one of the big things for Mari (she’s the one that gets them all into ghibli movies for sure) and she loves to play the music from Howl on her piano. She looks up to Sophie and her journey with self confidence is inspiring for Mari who I see as someone who had a period of shyness before she grew into herself (Middle School Mari struggled) I also think that Mari adores the love story carefully crafted between Howl and Sophie. She isn’t a fan of western romance movies because so much of the conflict is in the actual relationship. She likes Howl because the relationship makes them both grow and they don’t let each other get away with things that are wrong. It doesn’t quite remind her of her and Hero (They aren’t really that similar to the characters) but something about it is compelling and the intimacy of the movie draws her in. Plus Markle. All I need to say.
