my biggest pet peeve with web 2.0 dying is that people really think that the cryptobro web 3.0 is the inevitable next step. like it's written in stone that the internet will take the form of NFTs and cryptocurrency and the "metaverse" in the future.

like. come on. when was the last time you've actually seen anything NFT related in the year of our lord 2023? has ANYONE other than the cryptobros and their bots on twitter been talking about it?? what about the "metaverse"??? im pretty sure Meta itself even dropped their vr "metaverse" crap.

also even if the "mainstream" internet DOES go in that direction, that doesn't mean we need to follow? Despite the total takeover of web 2.0 and social media, personal sites and forums DO still exist. there are still IRC chats and MUCKs and MUDs. We will still have websites and web browsers in a web 3.0-dominated internet. even if those become niche.

plus, i think the whole reason web 2.0 and social media took off in the first place was because it was convenient. rather than building your own website from scratch, you instead had your own profile that you can easily upload photos to and set your mood and make small posts. people saw it as a way to easily keep up with friends, so they flocked to it.

what the fuck does web 3.0 offer to the average person? needing to put on a clunky, expensive set of goggles to virtually attend a work meeting? artificial scarcity assigned to shitty monkey jpegs?? other than techbros and billionares creating artificial hype around this shit to get people flocking there, what actually has people staying?

i had never watched a mrbeast video before & in my trying to cope w my trauma from yesterday i was like let me see what his videos are actually like bc i have seen many videos abt how terrible he is & omg i could not hate him any more….i watched this video of him building 100 houses for ppl in jamaica/el salvador/argentina/mexico and when i say it was so insidious…..he was building micro houses that were insanely small for whole families like clearly not large enough for them giving them junk furniture literally FOLDING TABLES AND CHAIRS and they are like crying w joy bc even that is better than what they had before and it was so haunting to watch truly this billionaire stand there like 🙂 and act like a savior to these ppl while giving them the absolute bare minimum he could to make himself look good. literally some of these houses he showed for a split second did not even have paneling or doors on them. for one family w two small children he was like their transportation was also destroyed and he gave them a MOTORCYCLE. like he is literally exploiting these impoverished ppl to make money and bolster his reputation while probably spending an 8th of what he made on the video for it like it was so sick. him being like “we spent millions of dollars” and it was still clear he was spending as little as he could. and all of the comments were abt how amazing of a person he is like u ppl truly do not see what is going on here do u. it felt disgusting to watch truly. esp when he made these children from el salvador chant for his chocolate and acted like they just did it and he didn’t make them do it. bc he’s just soooo famous that these kids w no homes still know who he is of course. we need to bring back the guillotine RN!!!!!!!!
