LotR newsletter people: I have access to a book of Tolkien’s drawings for a few days. Do you want me to do a photo dump of everything that has happened until now?

I can take pictures of the rest of the book in order to post them as they arrive, but because we’ve gone through a lot already, it would be a lot all at once (Hobitton, the trolls, the Old Forest, Rivendell...)

they are(/were?) working on a new version of The Thunderbirds ... they had to switch from actual puppets to animation ... but all the sets are all practical effects. again we couldn't take pictures of the really cool stuff ... but these models are pretty cool ...

A Week to Go: Countdown Jitters and Welcoming Mahina ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi!

Less than a week until the big day! Big day meaning: a long day of flying (nearly 10 hours!), jumping 23 hours forward, and moving to a new country! Things are slowly beginning to come together, and becoming that much more of a reality.

I spent this last weekend on Maui, visiting with my family in Lahaina (and watching the Superbowl). I was also able to finish one of my tattoo sleeves up before heading to Aotearoa next week. Mahalo e Keahi at Imua tattoo in Kīhei!

Also, before I get too far into this, Hauʻoli mahina ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi! Happy Hawaiian Language month! Oʻahu folks, did you make it to the Ola ka ʻĪ event at Windward Mall? I heard it was a lot of fun, lots of ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi all around, real maikaʻi. On Instagram, there is also something going on for all my ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi's out there, the #AaIKaOlelo (ʻAʻa i ka ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi) challenge, started by @/ehoopilimai on instagram. There's still plenty planning I need to do for my last few days here on Oʻahu, as well as my first few days in Aotearoa- last-minute paperwork, contacting people here and there, packing. But overall, I'm pretty psyched to go on this journey.

Of course, my first few days include sleeping. Although I say I'll get some rest on the long flight, I'm already losing sleep over how excited and nervous I am for this trip, in all honesty. I'm trying to settle into the thought that I will be going to an all new place, on my own, with limited knowledge about where exactly I'm located and having no one I know- yet. But, I know I will make friends, and have contacts with admin and advisers and such, which should be at least enough for my first few days. 

The past few semesters have been pretty tiring, not gonna lie; balancing school with work, as well as a fair amount of indigenous activism made for a very full (and equally spiritually fulfilling) semester. I’ve been non-stop in school since Christmas break 2018, having taken a full load of courses in the Spring, a double-load of classes in the summer, and a tight Fall schedule. I'm really looking forward to this exchange as not just my chance to travel, but as a chance to finally breathe.

I've had these few weeks between semesters to just work, focus a little on my life, and it's been nice. I hope I can keep up this rhythm in Aotearoa, and since I won't be working during my time abroad, I can really explore and adventure! Again, I'm still looking for things to do (everyone has so far just said Hobbiton™) in Auckland, and anywhere else that is relatively accessible, so please message me or reply if you have any suggestions!

Until then, expect me to complain over the stresses of last-minute shopping, packing, and office-kine tings. I have so many leftover things to give away, clothes to wash, books to donate, and shiny new suitcases to pack with just over a week left to go!
