Yk it really bothers me when I see people talking about eurylochus and the crew like they were the problem. It just feels like everyone is just missing the point. Yes they stopped listening to ody, yes eurylochus opened the wind bag, but that's what makes them so human.

Picture this, you leave your home to fight in a war. It takes literal years for this war to be over. You've lost friends, you miss your family, you've been through hell. You're starving and your captain tells you they found food on this island.

And then the cyclops happens. More friends die, you barely escape with your life, and your captain gives his name to the creature that killed your friends.

And everything after that is a direct cause of that decision.

So you hesitate to trust him. Yes he's smart, he's capable, he always has a plan. But he would do anything to get home, and you know that. So when he comes back to the ship claiming to have a bag full of wind, and when he refuses to let anyone near, refuses to trust his own crew, you get suspicious.

Its been about a decade by this point, and your captain seems to get more and more desperate to get home. A god is after you. Odysseus is forcing himself to stay away, all to make sure nobody touches that bag.

Its human, it's realistic, it makes sense that someone would open the bag. Because odysseus stopped trusting you, and so you stop trusting him. So you open the bag.

I just find it frustrating that people look at the crew/eurylochus as bad guys because of this, as pawns for ody to get home and thats it. The point of the show is that ody has become a monster, has dealt with and left behind his humanity. We, as listeners, root for him. We give him grace because of his circumstances. Because he's the main character.

But for some reason, people don't give that same grace to the crew. They're human, their circumstances are awful too. They have no idea if they will get home, they aren't sure then can trust their captain anymore. They question things. They make mistakes. They cause the deaths of others. It's human, its that feeling you get when you think that maybe hope is lost after all, it's what this story is about. Mistakes and loss and blame.

People dislike Eurylochus because he opened the bag. But odysseus gave the cyclops his name. And polites trusted the lotus eaters. And Athena told odysseus to be cruel to a fault. Nobody here is innocent, not really. And none of them knew better either. They were working with what they had, with the terrible circumstances at hand. It's no wonder they made mistakes. It's no wonder people died.

Why are we ignoring the humanity of the crew? Why are we arguing that they, or that eurylochus, deserved it? If the story was about them, odysseus would be seen as the bad guy. But he's the main character, so the others are stupid and wrong, right? All that matters is that odysseus gets home, right? Even if it costs the lives of his crew. His crew who stopped trusting him when he stopped trusting them. His crew who he sacrificed to get home.

I think we're missing the point here. Odysseus did become a monster, and although we cheer for him getting home and Penelope and Telemachus forgive him, we have to acknowledge that he did do terrible things. Those men will never see their families again. Why are we erasing that humanity in them?

Humans do bad things for the sake of saving themselves or the ones they love. That includes Odysseus. That includes Eurylochus. That includes the crew. And that includes every other character in this musical.

the combination of him being the most famous he has ever been + fans stalking him / being desperate for clout online and posting their interaction with him is really unlike anything ive seen w him.

like hes been followed/photographed/mobbed his whole public life but it feels especially weird rn when hes on a very long extended break and really not getting papped that often but people are taking and posting pics and videos of him everywhere he goes and filming their interactions with him even when he asks that they dont take a pic. during his last v long break in 2016/17, you really only saw him through pap photos on set or maybe 1 fan taking a pic of him and it would be monthssss before anyone saw him or knew what he was up to. but now its everyone and like every day and just from fans sneaking pics of him.

is it really just bc of tiktok and deuxmoi ?? im truly baffled like i genuinely do not understand the appeal of those interactions at all. what happened to couth and class and awareness

Just me thinking about 'A Single Man Tear' from SPN's episode 'Fanfiction' and the opposition between how Sam describes Dean and how Dean describes himself..

He shows emotion without a trace

trying and failing to think of how to say this in a way that won't make wei wuxian fans mad at me, but while it can be true that you don't owe anything to others and you shouldn't be forced to stay in toxic situations, i feel there is a difference between protecting your peace and just refusing to engage with difficult situations because you don't want to. wei wuxian doesn't like people having expectations of him, because he doesn't want to feel obligated to meet those expectations. wei wuxian doesn't like having to manage other people's emotions or show his own, and he would much prefer everyone to repress and pretend like everything's fine until the problem is either forgotten or it blows up in his face. i admit i may be speaking from personal experience, but when wei wuxian says "it's water under the bridge, i've forgotten and so should you," what i hear is a refusal to engage and a dismissal of the other person's feelings. it's not the "mature" answer to me, it's the answer of someone who still doesn't want to take accountability for what they did and wants the obligation they have to just disappear.

which is why he goes with lan wangji and not jiang cheng because lan wangji does not ask wei wuxian for anything and literally does whatever wei wuxian wants. and like good for them, good that they're happy, but ultimately, cutting off anyone that pushes back and asks you to explain yourself... if you knew someone irl that did that, you probably would not think it was a great quality

i'm not saying it makes him a bad person, it makes him a person. but just because the protagonist thinks and acts a certain way does not mean they're automatically in the right, by virtue of being the protagonist.

I see in my mind's eyes green and red having some conflict early on because red really likes physical closeness and touch but green has a lot of compulsions/intrusive thoughts about being clean/cross contamination. Which unfortunately are usually a little valid when it comes to red considering reds complete lack of concern for those things. At least as children.

Belphie and IK tidbits that made me laugh

- This one is very OOC but my older brother loves to call me a dickhead (lovingly) and that definitely seems like something Belphie would say if IK pulled a prank on him idk it just feels like that sort of relationship where he'll walk up and lightly push IK over for no reason and then walk away. The same vein as older siblings bursting through your door just to turn the light off and leave he's such an asshole I love him

- IK doing that viral thing where in the middle of Belphie talking she throws a slice of cheese/lunch meat at his face and it just sticks there

- Belphie going up to IK and fake beating her up like you do with a cat, exaggerated punching sounds and all

- Belphie tossing a pillow over IK and laying on top of her (not with his full weight ofc, but enough to trap her)

I can see him being generally very bothersome. love that guy (kinda)

they're like a pair of cats who find very cherished companionship in each other by fighting constantly <3 like those fights cats have where they just smack each other at lightning speed

the family'll be all chilling together in the common and ik just veeeery slowly reaches out and hits him in the arm. she keeps doing it an increasingly short intervals and belphie can't allowed to retaliate without the others ganging up on him sbdkfsbd

(belphie acts annoyed but he also always takes ik's side against the others, so he can't complain)

beel watches them take it in turns silently hitting each other with belphie's pillow and he's just like "[sentimental sigh] i love my family so much"
