you huff at his remark, a default eyeroll and shrug being your only response, and keep walking. fallen leaves crunch under your boots as you make your way down the forest path. no verbal response from you— which is fair enough. trying to show him the world through your eyes right now would be like trying to explain green to someone who's never seen colour before. at least, that's what your reasoning tells you.

however, unspoken by john (and vaguely repressed by him), there's actually a part of him that's able to recognize simple beauty like you do. it's just not in the hues of red, orange, and brown from dying leaves, or the chill of the wind that comes with the foreboding of winter and decay— it's in the person who's even bothering to try to show him these things.

Floyd's confession is less of a confession and more of a statement of fact. Maybe y'all had been teetering on the edge of flirting to being a couple and the final nail on the coffin was your night of passion.

You two have a very long discussion about the implications of what was just sex to humans, but a sign of lifelong commitment to eelmers.
