i feel that herbert is mischaracterized a lot as very stern and seriouse (and i admit i get sucked into this too in art/fics i make cus its easy to go overboard with the stereotypes) when in reality he is a freak ass ragebaiter who makes terrible puns at the worst moments and is also so pathetic and petty and always looks like a frightened small animal or a pouty twink. we dont give him enough credit for how sassy and just fucking hilarious and insane he is

I’m not sure if anybody’s talked about this before but I feel like talking about it:

I love when, in either fan fictions or fan art, Herbert is doing/likes something “uncharacteristic.” I think too often the argument floats around that Herbert is a freak (he is) who doesn’t or can’t have special interests or hobbies outside of his work. I think in a way that kind of dehumanizes him. I get why, but the narrative that the scientist is purely science-driven and cannot be an individual outside of their work is sometimes kinda…old. Yes, Herbert’s sole focus is reanimation and science, to put it plainly, but it’s so fun when folks give him a favorite movie or a favorite song! Something to add a little more whimsy ya know? It makes him a little more human

I forgot who made this fic but I read one where Herbert was a violinist at some point in his early life and used the violin to calm down a reanimated subject. It’s so fun when the “uptight scientist” type has a hobby or a skill or something outside of what we typically associate them with!! (Also if anybody knows what fic this is please let me know who wrote it because I can’t remember :( )

Yes, I can see the argument that claims Herbert is “far from human” because he does such inhumane work, and I get why many people prefer to make him cold and apathetic. That’s a great approach (all approaches are great), but I just think it’s great when people give him a quality that seems very unlikely for the type of character he is. It makes him more unique in the eyes of the individuals that assign such qualities.

All that to say…do with The Character what you will! It’s all in good fun :)
