I'm not going to stand here and say that bioware's handling of the Quanri was perfect in this game, but this is addressed both in game and out of game.

There's a codex in game from Seer Rowan a Tevinter Nights story (it's the first one) that makes the exact point y'all are making about how part of the reason why the Antaam are Like That is because if they weren’t obsessed with strength, following the orders of their commanding officer, and they Wouldn't Be Antaam. It's not inherent to the Qun, but it's inherent to the Antaam because those are the qualities they select for when putting someone in these jobs.

What seems consistent among the Antaam warlords is cruelty, from Baqounasaar (Flaming Wind), whose ships terrorize the northern coast, to Kashtaar (Jewel-Taker), whose kith have become a bandit army in the mountains outside Marothius. I believe the reason to be twofold: first, these kithshoks feared that their army might turn upon them as they turned upon the Arishok, so they drive their soldiers through fear; and second, there are very few kind and thoughtful Antaam.

This is an observation, not an insult.

The Qun has two words for healer. One is rethari, a healer-priest, whose name literally means "one who helps." The other is maridim, an Antaam battlefield healer, whose name comes from "mar-itwa'adim," or "do not let them fall." Those under the Qun have jobs selected for them by their teachers, so any young Qunari too thoughtful or too sensitive for the harsh life of the Antaam would have been made rethari instead of maridim. The Qunari, in their wisdom, decided that all children who were naturally prepared to follow orders and hurt others should be placed in the Antaam, and this is the result.

"What about the Iron Bull" the Iron Bull wasn't Antaam. He was Asala. I think. I'm certain that he wasn't Antaam because Ben-Hassrath are considered part of the part of the Qun that represents the Soul while Antaam are considered the body. We don't get a name for that group we only get the fact that their leader is called the Arqun.

Although since Antaam means "body" in Qunlat I feel safe saying the Iron Bull is Asala since that's Qunlat for soul unless I'm contradicted.

Again I'm uncertain about the name not that he's not Antaam. He was 100% under Soul not Body.

I really don't want to spoil Three Trees to Midnight, but you see the difference in how an Ben-Hassrath and an Antaam soldier behave in that story.

TLDR: It’s explained in universe that while the Quanri aren't inherently violent potential powderkegs, violent potential poweder kegs are who the Tamassrans select for the Antaam specifically. The more level headed and thoughtful Qunari children are put in either the Asala or Athlok (99% sure that's the word for the part of the Qun that represents the mind although for the same reason only 99% sure about the Asala).

and i spoke about this already but they always take the worst fucking approach, look at the Antaam in Veilguard. It's like oh see, the qunari are incredibily violent by nature, so of course when the antaam left the qun, the only thing that kept them in check, they're gonna go all beserk.

And that is fucking crazy to me bc. there is a better explanation imo. Qunari are assigned roles when they're 12, so the antaam soldiers have been trained as soldiers since they were children and have been in the army since probably a relatively young age. And I dont doubt that training to be a part of the army in the Qun is probably very rigorous, which already might mess you up, and then you add the fact that like. going to an active war like they do in Seheron, and see the horrors of it also messes you up. It makes more sense to me that the Antaam are acting out like this, NOT because the qunari are secretly all evil and violent by nature, but because war and fighting is all they've known due to how they were raised.

if all your life you've been told you're a soldier, and you went through this rigorous training and you've seen war with your own eyes, it kinda makes sense to me that you might fuck up shit later on. Not bc of nature, but because this is how you were raised. How were you supposed to think any differently if this is how you were raised? and instead of raising the question that yeah because the qun is so rigid in their roles, it caused a situation like this, they went with noooo the qunari are inherently violent (or worse, they became like this after drinking dragon's blood which im gonna take a wild guess and say this is what they were going to do if we ever got another game)

Old man yells at cloud moment, but I am exhausted by those "Being a writer/liking a character is wanting to see them in a fit of of graphic despair-" because you know to a degree I GET it and I've BEEN there, but I am actually Just tired of angst. It feels like the two genres of fanfiction overwhelmingly are either smut or angst. If fandom isn't sexual, it's catty, if it's not catty, it's sexual, and if you're really unlucky it's both in the good old circa 2010 BL Doujinshi circle "No means yes actually."

Me and my favorite characters are already going through enough as is, only for their front row of cheerleaders to be cheering for their imminent demise, actually.

Like. Being fr. It's fiction. These are fake little guys. Them sobbing in a pool of their own blood literally doesn't hurt anyone. But it does hurt ME, because my little guy is sad and now I am sad. Is there no one? No one who wishes to make life better for these fictional creatures? No writer who takes joy in making their characters happy? No one who wants mine silly little guy to smile as I do??? (I have obviously divolved into drama)

In short: I wish we were able to block specific genres of post without needing keywords like come on, it's literally gotten to the point where I've just started blocking anyone who says 'being a writer is wanting to see your favorite character suffer' because no actually I want to see them get a good night's rest for once. I want to see them happy. I want to see them experiencing warmth and bliss they weren't even sure existed. I want them covered in the blood of their enemies and reviling in their now broken chains. I want them free. Thriving. Committing acts of violence that make them feel like life is worth living.

I already go for the traumatized characters right off the bat, I DON'T want to see them WORSE, I want them to experience comfort for the first time like a top heavy newborn kitten being pet for the first time. Screaming and hissing but warm and safe.

Being real for a moment, I obviously can't stop people from posting or reblogging this genre of posts, NOR WOULD I WANT TO. I'm glad they're having fun, BUT I wish I could blacklist this genre of post.

I do follow her on spotify, but I don't always listen (depends what I have in queue, the topic, etc). I *did* listen to that ep, though, and I disagreed with pretty much all of it MAINLY because you can't have it both ways, i.e., you can't say here's all this gryles proof, here's all this swiftgron proof, then dismiss larry or kaylor when it's the exact same amount of evidenceTM. Like, I'm all for reaching, reach away! But when you're matching, then match it! If it's fandom bullshit, call it as such, but where there's that much smoke, there's at least a wee bit of fire!
