house md pokemon teams, as meticulously picked out by someone who's been into pokemon since birth:
house - cyclizar, audino, gothitelle, mabosstiff, toxtricity amped mode, hisuian zoroark
wilson - blissey, morgrem, male meowstic, cinccino, absol, zoroark
cuddy - kangaskhan, leavanny, male pyroar, jynx, lucario, hatterene
foreman - alakazam, noctowl, ferrothorn, luxray, midday lycanroc, malamar
chase - yamper, komala, liepard, klefki, alolan raichu, lurantis
cameron - sensu oricorio, froslass, crobat, mimikyu, female indeedee, sylveon
taub - alolan persian, glameow, snubbull, starmie, swanna, male oinkologne
thirteen - houndoom, drifblim, gardevoir, sneasler, armarouge, cloyster
kutner - goodra, seel, aipom, quagsire, mr mime, pawmot
notes
people tend to assume that house's ace is one of his 'cooler' pokemon - zoroark, toxtricity - but it's really audino. can mega evolve and everything. he loves throwing people off by bringing him out when running diagnostics (audino have excellent hearing; his can detect heart issues typically only found through invasive testing)
cuddy's hatterene HATES house. and he knows it. if threats of clinic duty doesn't get him to leave her alone when he's bothering her, she'll threaten to get hatty out, and hatty has NO qualms about beating the fuck out of him
wilson doesn't bring absol out at work. with his profession and the species' reputation as doombringers, it wouldn't exactly be a comforting sight. he doesn't even really remember how he acquired her, nor does he know that she's not concerned about his cancer patients but for him.
taub hardly trains his pokemon, making him the most unready for battle of everyone listed.
kutner and his pawmot get into many defibrillator adventures (accidents)!!! quagsire, being water/ground, is unaffected and therefore happily takes up the task of putting out fires when needed :DD

NEWS OF TRADITION
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Kently Estate]
Princess Lara: Thank you for letting Uncle Louis host Thanksgiving this year. I know you all changed things for me, and I appreciate it.
Queen Katherine: You don't have to thank me, sissy. Anything for my new nephew! I always forget how much closer you are to Kently than the palace.
Princess Lara: Yes, and with Anna and the kids back at Kently, we're all somewhat together again.
Tumblr media
Queen Katherine: "How is Anthony enjoying fatherhood?"
Princess Lara: "He's adjusted well. We got married, father died, you became queen, then we got pregnant. It's been a challenging two years. He's been so supportive."
Tumblr media
Queen Katherine: (smiles) I'm glad to hear. Jazmyn! I can't believe how big Jackson has gotten!
Lady Jazmyn: Girl! He doesn't miss a meal!
Queen Katherine: (laughs) Two year olds!
Tumblr media
Princess Margot: Time to eat!
Princess Lara: I'll tell the children. I think they're still outside.
Tumblr media

Tumblr media
Princess Lara: The children should be right in.
Tumblr media
Princess Hattie: This Philemon scandal is all over the news!
Princess Margot: I thought that had died down.
Princess Hattie: No! He lied on the House floor last week, in front of the minority leader. He resigned!
Tumblr media
Princess Lara: What?
Princess Hattie: Birch! He was Philemon's undoing.
Princess Margot: The Osteopath?
Tumblr media
Prince Louis: Right after Philemon's statement, Birch appeared on SNN, where he endorsed Philemon's version and dismissed all rumors and insinuations as "baseless".
Princess Hattie: What Birch didn't know was the Metropolitan Police was investigating his affairs. They had interviewed 139 of his friends, associates and patients, and had maintained a 24-hour watch on his home for two weeks.
Prince Louis: Among those who gave statements was Wilson, who contradicted her earlier assurances and confirmed her sexual relationship with Philemon, providing corroborative details of the interior of the Cavalier Terrace house.
Princess Margot: What? That's a security breach.
Tumblr media
Lady Jazmyn: What's the Cavalier Terrace house?
Prince Louis: Where Philemon and his wife live, as a member of the House of Commons.
Tumblr media
Princess Hattie: Well, Philemon confessed the truth to Keller's private secretary Monday, confirming that he had lied, resigned from the government, and applied for the office of steward of the Shaltern Hundreds in order to give up his House of Commons seat.
Prince Louis: I'm sorry, Kate. We should change the subject.
Prince Leo: Why should Kate care? None of this is her fault!
Tumblr media
Prince Louis: The sims of Windengurg take everything out on the monarchy. The good and especially the bad. The government is formed in the sovereigns name so these are acts, many believe, are directive and reflective of the crown. Mommy always said "the Crown is a delicate jewel."
Tumblr media
Queen Katherine: Speaking of, I'd like to make a grade gesture this Christmas. I'd like to restart an old family tradition - Christmas Day walk to church in Beaverdam.
Prince Louis: Oh, Kate. How lovely!
Queen Katherine: We haven't done it since 1992. Therefore, I'd like you all to spend Christmas with me in Beaverdam this year. Lara, please bring anyone you need to help you and the baby.
Tumblr media

Tumblr media
Queen Rowena: I'm so proud of you. Your father would be, too.
Queen Katherine: Thank you, mommy.
Queen Rowena: I know I haven't been myself lately. Losing your father was very tough but I'm feeling much better.
Tumblr media
Princess Lara: You don't have to apologize, mommy. We're just glad you're feeling better.
Queen Katherine: I will have a full dowry starting in January. I neglected so many charities.
Princess Lara: Same here! Kate has given Anthony and I several more patronages.
Tumblr media

Tumblr media
Queen Katherine: Have you talked to King Felipe lately?
Prince Louis: Of Oasis Springs? No. Why?
Queen Katherine: Whatever happened between he and father? I was reading fathers journals and he mentioned a trip you two took and a deal that was made but his next entry discussing the king was very unfavorable.
Prince Louis: Oh. I...uh... I wouldn't know, Kate. I wouldn't think too much of it.
Tumblr media
Prince Louis: How is your Christmas speech going?
Queen Katherine: I've made so many changes since granny died. I fear I will make many more edits before we film.
Prince Louis: I'm always here if you need to share your thoughts and ideas, bear.
Queen Katherine: Thank you, Uncle Louis.
Tumblr media
Queen Katherine: (hugging) We'll see you in Beaverdam.
Prince Louis: I wouldn't miss it. Christmas at Beaverdam! My favorite tradition!

Hi,
I make period drama style gifs. If you use gif packs, please like and reblog them. Most of my projects are already ready, but every day I post no more than 190 gifs. Because that was the reason why my previous account was blocked.
I tried to make gif packs in a format more familiar to you with a link to a separate page. However, unfortunately, I did not succeed because of the large format of high-quality gifs.
I want to explain about color processing. Usually, I improve the contrast, brightness and saturation, but leave the naturalness of the film. I don't make the contours too sharp because I like the aesthetic of it looking like a natural image.

My Montana (Cole Walter fanfic)
Chapter 3
"Okay everyone, dinner" Georges shout carries through the house causing the troops to march down to the kitchen. It's like a war scene as everyone gets into their chairs, plates being handed out, food getting shoved onto plates and then into their mouths. Josie has eaten here hundreds of times and she still has never gotten used to dinner time in the Walter house. How George and Katherine do this, three times a day, everyday. Josie doesn't know, but she loves it. Anyone who just walked in and saw it, would see it as being complete chaos and yes, they would be right, but it's organized chaos. Everyone is so used to each other that they know where everyone sits and who dives in to get their food first, no arguments about it and that feels like a skill.
Josie takes her seat near the end of the table, sitting between Danny and Cole, who turns his head and looks at her as he takes his seat, a faint smirk on his lips. Josie returns the jester before grabbing a slice of garlic bread and puts her slender hand out for him to take it. Cole looks at her for a moment, taking the offer. Twirling her hand a little, Josie rolls her eyes causing him to silently chuckle, taking it out of her hand and taking a bite, his eyes never leaving her. Josie chuckles before turning and grabbing herself a slice of lasagna. "You are going to smell," she tells him, placing her plate down and taking her knife and fork into her hands and cutting the meal.
Cole smirks at her, leaning across her and grabbing the lasagna dish in order to get himself a slice. Before sitting down he allows himself to whisper in her ear, "well I guess you are just going to have to make sure that I have brushed my teeth then." Sitting back down, he slides a piece of lasagna out of the dish and onto his plate, going to eat it. Josie can't help but lean over and whisper in his ear. "And how am I to do that?" she asks him as she leans back a little, putting her head on her hand, facing him and looking him in the eyes.
Cole snickers at her before putting his hand out and moving a piece of her hair out of her face and behind her ear. "I can think of more than one way," was all he said before turning to his dinner and stuffing it into his mouth. Josie removes her hand from under her chin and moves herself around so she is looking straight in front of her.
"Hey everyone," a cheerful voice says as they enter the dining room. Katherine walks in with a smile on her face and Josie's Aunt Hattie on her heels as they enter. A chorus of muffled hi's are heard through the dining room causing Hattie and Katherine to smile at all of them. George stands up and kisses his wife on the cheek causing her to pat his face with her hand. "Smells good," she tells him as she takes her seat at the table. Hattie sits next to Katherine, giving the kids a small wave of acknowledgement which earned her some smiles.
"So how was everyone's day," Katherine asks as she puts her food on her plate. Moans of alright and weren't too bad were heard across the room and Katherine chuckles turning to her husband.
"They are all very cheery today, aren't they?" George simply shakes his head, the corner of his lips turned up. "Tell me about it."
"So mom, Hattie, what did you do today?" Nathan asks, looking at his mother intently.
"Well we had to go and help Mrs Wilson's cow give birth as the baby was breech. Luckily we were able to see both mother and baby but it was touch and go," Katherine explains before taking a bite of her dinner. Hattie swallows some of her food before speaking.
"And then we had to go and help Mr McCarthy's dog who was foaming at the mouth. Heat stroke and exhaustion, apparently the poor thing ran off this morning and has been running around in the heat all day," Josie leans forward in her chair.
"Well, the dog is okay right?" she asks, concerned. Hattie looks at her niece and smiles.
"The dog, Honey, is fine. We brought her to the clinic to get some fluid in her and to observe her but she should be home by tomorrow," Katherine pipes up with a laugh.
"Well she clearly felt all better after Mr McCarthy brought out the treats. Dog sat up, wagged her tail and walked over to him like there was nothing wrong with her," the whole table giggled, a few 'typicals' getting chucked around. Soon the table falls into simple conversation between everyone else, a good meal was all it took for everyone to pipe up and all Josie can do is sit back and watch everyone be happy. All Cole can do is watch her.
Later that evening, Josie is in Alex and Nathan's room, sitting at the end of Nathan's bed with her guitar in hand and him at the top of the bed, facing her. "Okay, you think you got it," she asks him as she lets her hands fall from the guitar. Nathan nods his head and places his hands in position and starts strumming at the strings. The songs flow nicely, a little slower than they should and the occasional wrong note but seeing as they had only been practicing for an hour it wasn't too bad.
Nathan's fingers strum the last of the tune and then allows his lean fingers to leave the strings and Josie smiles and claps. Nathan turns his head, a tint of red on his cheeks as he gives her a little grin and rubs his hand on the back of his neck. "Come on, that was terrible," Josie shakes her head at him.
"Nathan, that was good. You only started learning the song an hour ago and I must say that seeing as invisible string is one of my favorite songs, I think I am qualified to say that was very impressive," Nathan chuckles before putting his guitar between him and Josie.
"Well, I had a good teacher," he tells her and all she can do is nod.
"Okay, whatever you want to say. I don't want to go around in a useless argument," Josie tells him as she puts her guitar back in its case. Alex walks into the room and smiles at the pair, giving them a small smile.
"Hey, are you two done playing?" He sits down in his chair facing his computer, turning it on.
"Yeah, we just finished off. Josie will be going soon anyway," Nathan explains and Alex turns towards the pair and nods.
"Great, I promised Kiley that I would play online with her for a bit," Josie smiles, locking her case and lifting it.
"Well rooms all yours," Josie stands with her case and walks to the door.
"Hey Josie," she turns and looks at Alex whose face is now flat.
"Yeah?"
"What's going on between you and Cole?"
"Dude," Nathan exclaims. Josie freezes up, confused by the question. She turns her body and leans against the door frame, eyebrows scrunched together, lips lifted ever so slightly.
"What do you mean what is going on between me and Cole. There's nothing going on between me and Cole," she explains and Alex raises his eyebrows, looking unimpressed.
"Well you two seemed to be very cozy at the dinner table today, and that's not the first time that you two have been all cozy with each other. So..." he leans forward in his chair and rests his elbows on his knees. "What's the deal?" Josie tilts her head back and laughs.
"Absolutely nothing is going on," she moves her free arm around and her head moves around a bit when she is talking. "I mean Alex come on, I have known you all for years, best friends with Danny for years and friends with Cole for years. Don't you think that if something was ever going to happen between us, not that there ever will, it would have happened by now," Alex simply laughs.
"Well I think we all know that Cole is incapable of having anything serious," Alex snarks, Nathan scoffs and shakes his head at his brother. Josie runs her tongue over her top lip and nods her head.
"Alex, you know what, I am not listening to this. Whatever problem you have with Cole, that's between you two but don't involve me. And there is nothing going on between me and Cole, so just drop it," Josie storms out of the room having had enough with Alex. If he wanted to pull at strings to cause drama then he could do that, but Josie was not going to sit and listen to it.
Storming down the hallway, all she could think about was getting some fresh air. She felt like she was suffocating, maybe it was just the adrenaline wearing off.
"Josie," a voice calls. Her head snaps around and she sees her Aunt Hattie standing in the entryway to the kitchen. "You okay," she asks her as she walks towards her. Josie bites her lip and nods ever so slightly.
"Yeah, im fine i just need some fresh air," the words were said slowly, she was pushing them out of her mouth. Hattie picks up her pace grabbing ahold of her niece's arms and directing her outside. The fresh air hits Josie and she has never been so happy to feel the breeze on her face.
"Let's sit down," Hattie directs her over to one of the benches. After sitting down, Josie leans her head back, closes her eyes and exhales. Hattie rubs her hand up the younger girl's arms trying to sooth her like she always does.
"Do you want to tell me what is going on?" she asks and Josie just takes in a deep breath.
"I just... got panicky."
"Panicky, panicky about what?" Hattie was confused. Josie lifts her shoulders up and shakes her head, opening eyes.
"Honestly... I have no idea. I mean it could be because of Alex," Josie offers, looking at her aunt.
"What did Alex do?" Hattie leans back to get a better look at the girl.
"Oh... just getting onto my case about Cole," Hattie rolls her eyes.
"Well that doesn't surprise me. Them two seriously need to figure out whatever it is that is going on between them," Josie snickers and plays with the paint of her fingernails.
"That's what is said," Hattie looks at hers and gives her a pock on her shoulder causing Josie to look up at her, eyes wide.
"What was that for?" she gasps and Hattie raises her eyebrows at her.
"There's more too, isn't there," Josie can't help but choke on her words.
"I mean... he was also insinuating that there was something going on between me and Cole," Hattie's mouth falls open and she gapes at Josie. Josie looks at her and shakes her head, her eyes wide.
"NO," she tells her aunt with her finger pointed up at her.
"Is there something going on between you and Cole," Hattie whispers, leaning forward slightly.
"No, of course not. I would never go down that lane," Josie says, raising her eyebrows a little.
"And why not?"
"Because Aunt Hat, it's Cole. He is Cole Walter, the most popular boy in school, who is known for sleeping around and I have known him since I was a kid. I'm best friends with his brother. His siblings are like my siblings and his mom is like my second mom. I'm essentially his sister," Josie exclaims, her arms moving around. Hattie scoffs and shakes her head.
"Josie, you know that is the biggest load of bull. There is no way that Cole sees you as his sister, there's just no way. I know that and you know that. So what is this really about," Hattie's face is pointed down, eyebrows raised in a knowing look. Josie can't help but scrunch her face up and let out a frustrated groan.
"I don't know. There I know there is no reason for us not to start anything. I mean we have known each other for years, are good friends most of the time and i... kinda like him," Josie admits and Hattie can't help shooting her arms up in the air and shouting in happiness.
"I knew it. I knew it," she sings songs and Josie shushes her.
"Would you be quiet, we are literally at their house. Last thing I need is for one of them to hear and blab to him. And stop acting like a teen you are nearly in your 40s," Josie scolds and Hattie just laughs.
"Oh come on, let me have some fun, and hey you admitted that you like him. That's huge Jos. Now all you have to do is tell him," Josie's eyes go wide.
"No, it's not happening. I am not telling him. Aunt Hat that can not happen."
"And why not?" Hattie exclaims.
"Because I am going through stuff. He is going through some stuff so it wouldn't be good for us to start something right now or ever," Hattie puts her head to the side and sighs.
"I swear, why are teen relationships so complicated? God I don't miss it," she exclaims and Josie just laughs.
"Yeah and I can't wait to not have to deal with them anymore." Then there is silence, comfortable silence where neither one of them speaks and just processes everything that has been said. Hattie leans forward and puts her hand on Josie's arm.
"You will tell me if anything is bothering you or if something does happen. Just tell me okay," Josie smiles at her and nods.
"Of course, I will. But nothing is going to happen, so you don't have to worry," Hattie leans her back and groans.
"I can't deal with this anymore. Come on," she stands up and holds her hands out towards Josie.
"I think it is time for us to go home," Josie agrees. It had been a long day and she really wanted her bed.
Disclaimer - I am not following the plotline of my life with the Walter boys as closely and am using the characters and making my own story. I will be taking some plotlines from the series but it won't directly follow the show. Also, this book is not going to focus on the build up to the relationship but the actual relationship.

Great Books Don’t Make Great Films, but “Nickel Boys” Is a Glorious Exception
RaMell Ross’s first dramatic feature, an adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s novel, gives the bearing of witness an arresting cinematic form.
By Richard Brody December 6, 2024
It’s harder to adapt a great book than an average one. Literary greatness often inhibits directors, who end up paying prudent homage to the source rather than engaging in the bold revisions that successful adaptations require. And even uninhibited directors may lack the stylistic originality of their literary heroes. It’s all the more remarkable, then, that the director RaMell Ross, in his first dramatic feature, “Nickel Boys”—adapted from Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer-winning 2019 novel, “The Nickel Boys”—avoids both obstacles with a rare blend of daring and ingenuity. Few films have ever rendered a major work of fiction so innovatively yet so faithfully. In a year of audaciously accomplished movies, “Nickel Boys” stands out as different in kind. Ross, who co-wrote the script with Joslyn Barnes, achieves an advance in narrative form, one that singularly befits the movie’s subject—not just dramatically but historically and morally, too.
The movie’s title refers to Black youths (teens and younger) who are inmates of the Nickel Academy, a segregated and abusive “reform school” in rural northern Florida—particularly to two teen-agers, Elwood (Ethan Herisse) and Turner (Brandon Wilson), who become friends while incarcerated there, in the mid-nineteen-sixties. (The institution in Whitehead’s novel is inspired by the notorious Dozier School for Boys, but his characters are fictional.) Elwood, who is sixteen years old when he enters the facility, is being raised by his grandmother Hattie (Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor), who works on the cleaning staff of a hotel. He’s a star student, literary and politically passionate, in a segregated school. One of his teachers, Mr. Hill (Jimmie Fails), is a civil-rights activist, and he plays a Martin Luther King, Jr., speech on a record for his students. Elwood gets his picture in a local newspaper for participating in a civil-rights demonstration, but he’s only holding a sign; he longs to join in civil disobedience, but Hattie seems skeptical about the idea. Hitchhiking to a nearby college for advanced classes, he gets a ride from a flashily dressed, fast-talking Black man (Taraja Ramsess) whose car, unbeknownst to Elwood, is stolen. When the police pull the driver over, the innocent Elwood, too, is punished, resulting in his internment in Nickel.
From the start, Ross throws down a stylistic gauntlet: up until Elwood’s imprisonment, the action is seen entirely from his point of view—literally so, as if the camera were in the place occupied by his head, pivoting and tilting to show his shifting gaze, while his voice is heard offscreen. This device was famously used by Robert Montgomery in his 1947 adaptation of Raymond Chandler’s “The Lady in the Lake,” but it was no more than a gimmick. In Ross’s hands, the device becomes something overwhelmingly expressive: the images, rather than merely recording Elwood’s emotions, register the cause of those emotions and allow the viewer to partake in his inner world.
The results can be puckish, as when Elwood’s reflection appears in the chrome side of the iron that Hattie is sliding across an ironing board. But Ross’s technique is exquisitely responsive to the story’s depth and range of experience. The viewer shares Elwood’s naïve bewilderment when the driver of the stolen car, hearing a police siren, tells him not to turn around; similarly, one feels the anguished anticipation when Elwood awaits transport to Nickel. At this point, an extraordinary scene tears a hole in time, bringing the history of Black American life rushing in to overtake Elwood’s own: Hattie, with an air of unusual formality and seething indignation, recalls in excruciating detail her father’s death in police custody and her husband’s death at the hands of white assailants. But she expects better for Elwood.
Once the police have deposited Elwood in Nickel’s run-down barracks for Black inmates, Ross extends the dramatic force of his method while expanding its intellectual scope. At breakfast, Elwood meets Turner, who’s from Houston and much more streetwise. The impact of this moment is heralded in a coup de cinéma that is a vast amplification of the story: a repetition of the breakfast-table encounter, seen, the second time around, from Turner’s point of view. Once the pair become friends, both of their perspectives share the film, to mighty effect.
Elwood’s wrongful detention is only the first of the Job-like litany of injustices heaped upon him. In Nickel, sucker-punched and knocked out by a bigger kid, Elwood receives the same standard and brutal punishment as his assailant. Nickel’s sadistic supervisor, Mr. Spencer (Hamish Linklater), who is white, administers beatings with a strap in the so-called white house, far from the barracks. An industrial fan is used to drown out the victims’ screams, but it doesn’t quite do so, and Elwood, with his view of the horrors obstructed, hears them in terror while awaiting his turn.
Hospitalized as a result of the beating, Elwood gets a surprise visit from Turner, who’s also a patient (having skillfully feigned illness). Turner warns him that there are still worse punishments menacing the Nickel inmates, ranging from the sweat box—a brutally hot crawl space under a tar roof—to actual murder. (Such deaths were covered up by burial in unmarked graves and an official lie that the child ran away without a trace.) Elwood, inspired by the civil-rights movement and knowing that his grandmother has hired a lawyer, is confident that justice will prevail. He even keeps a notebook in which he records unpaid labor and which he thinks will help get Nickel shut down. Turner has no such confidence, insisting that no one gets out of Nickel alive except by getting himself out. The two teens’ visual perspectives, alternating through the hospital scene, embody their diametrically opposed views of American society, of their prospects, and of the destinies that await them.
Through Elwood’s and Turner’s eyes, in scenes that unfold in long and complex takes, the movie offers a formidable fullness of incident, intimately physical detail, and finely nuanced observations. The corruption of Nickel’s administrators and the legitimized absurdities of their cruel regime come to light as they’re experienced by the two teens, as do Hattie’s struggles to stay connected with Elwood and to seek legal relief. Lyrical snatches of daily life—passing moments of grace on a job outside Nickel’s grounds or during free moments in a rec room—are haunted by traces of past brutality and flickers of menace. Ross stages the action with a choreographic virtuosity that’s all the more astonishing given that this is his first dramatic film. (His previous feature, from 2018, is the documentary “Hale County This Morning, This Evening.”) His teeming visual imagination is matched by the agile physicality of Jomo Fray’s cinematography. As a first dramatic feature, “Nickel Boys” is in the exalted company of such films as Terrence Malick’s “Badlands” and Julie Dash’s “Daughters of the Dust.” Like them, it comprehensively creates a new way of capturing immediate experience cinematically, a new aesthetic for dramatizing history and memory.
Early on, the action is set in historical perspective by means of flash-forwards. Eventually, there are revelations about the atrocities at Nickel; the grounds are excavated, and human remains discovered. One of the friends (played as an adult by Daveed Diggs) gets wind of these investigations, having in the intervening years made his way to New York, found employment as a mover, and started his own business. In this later time frame, Ross continues to rely on point-of-view images, but with a piercing difference. The camera now floats just behind the character’s head, depicting work and home, love stories and painful reunions, fleeting observations and a reckoning with the past, as if from two points of view simultaneously—one visual and one spectral, bringing absence to life along with presence.
The onscreen incarnation of Elwood’s and Turner’s perceptions isn’t only intellectual or theoretical. The moral essence of Ross’s technique is to give cinematic form to the bearing of witness. Where Whitehead’s novel describes his characters’ physical torments in the third person, with psychological discernment and declarative precision, Ross’s movie fuses observation and sensation with its audiovisual style. It suggests a form of testimony beyond language, outside the reach of law and outside the historical record. It is a revelation of inner experience that starts with the body and all too often remains sealed off there and lost to time—except to the extent that the piece of art can conjure it into existence.
The movie’s twin aspects of witness and of point of view have a significance that extends beyond the drama and into cinematic history. There were no Black directors in Hollywood until the late sixties, and no Hollywood films that conveyed then what “Nickel Boys” shows in retrospect: the monstrous abuses of the Jim Crow era and its vestiges. In bringing the historical reckonings of Whitehead’s novel to the screen, Ross hints at an entire history of cinema that doesn’t exist—a bearing of witness that didn’t happen and the lives that were lost in that invisible silence. ♦
