THE PHILEMON PORTRAIT

[The Private Secretary's Office, Buckingsim Palace]
Martin: (on the phone) Is it confirmed?
[??]: (inaudible speaking)
Martin: (grunts) Understood.

Martin: (walking urgently)

Martin: (continuing to walk urgently)

Martin: (walking urgently)
[The Queens Private Quarters]
Queen Katherine: (resting)

Martin: (clears throat) Your Majesty.
Queen Katherine: (gasps) "Yes, Martin?"

Martin: Um... Well, the Windenburg Horse Society is still struggling with the approval of their charitable status. They thought your intervention might speed things up a bit.
Queen Katherine: Yes, just leave me the paperwork, Martin.
Martin: And there are one or two urgent royal warrants that require your assent, before you leave on holiday.

Queen Katherine: Yes. Is that it?
Martin: I'm afraid not, ma'am. One more thing. It's a little delicate. Um... The man at the center of the Philemon scandal?
Queen Katherine: Ezekiel Birch?

Martin: Right. He's taken his own life. At his practice, his home, um... the police found certain items, among them a portrait... a hand-drawn portrait done by Mr. Birch himself, of...
Queen Katherine: Of?
Martin: His Royal Highness The Prince consort, ma'am.
Queen Katherine: What?
Martin: It seems they knew one another. The police have witnesses who saw His Royal Highness arriving at Birch's house on several occasions.

Martin: We were at a loss for how to link them, but then it became clear that they were both members of that same royal navy lunch club that met weekly.
Queen Katherine: (quivers)
Martin: Now, there is some concern as to whether there were other portraits and if they may fall into the wrong hands. The police believe there are also other pictures of guests from that party.
Queen Katherine: I see.

Martin: We'll manage the situation, of course, ma'am. Fight it off, hold back any press. But I just thought you should be aware.
Queen Katherine: Yes. Thank you, Martin.
Martin: Thank you, ma'am.
Queen Katherine: (crying)
- - - - - THAT AFTERNOON - - - - -
(protestors shouting inaudibly)
Prince Rainier: (to protestors) Move! Get out of the way, morons!

[The White Drawing Room]
Prince Rainier: Anthony, my boy.
Prince Anthony: Hello.

Prince Rainier: Lara. What are you doing here?
Princess Lara: I could ask you the same question in reverse. What were you not doing here?

Princess Lara: Incase you hadn't noticed, your wife's parliament has gone up in flames after Birch's suicide was announced. The sims are calling for Keller to resign but he refuses. Everyone has now directed their anger towards the palace. Hence the protestors out front. It's blown up in her face somewhat. We came to see if she was alright.
Prince Rainier: (exhales)
Princess Lara: But she's already left. Bolted back to Brindleton Bay.

Princess Lara: (walking away)
Prince Rainier: Lara... I'm sure...
Princess Lara: Tony. Let's go! We've been away from the baby too long.
Prince Anthony: Hey, I'll see you later, man.

Morning and Evening by Charles Spurgeon

Morning, November 1st
"The church in thy house." – Philemon 1:2
Is there a Church in this house? Are parents, children, friends, servants, all members of it? or are some still unconverted? Let us pause here and let the question go round--Am I a member of the Church in this house? How would father's heart leap for joy, and mother's eyes fill with holy tears if from the eldest to the youngest all were saved! Let us pray for this great mercy until the Lord shall grant it to us. Probably it had been the dearest object of Philemon's desires to have all his household saved; but it was not at first granted him in its fulness. He had a wicked servant, Onesimus, who, having wronged him, ran away from his service. His master's prayers followed him, and at last, as God would have it, Onesimus was led to hear Paul preach; his heart was touched, and he returned to Philemon, not only to be a faithful servant, but a brother beloved, adding another member to the Church in Philemon's house. Is there an unconverted servant or child absent this morning? Make special supplication that such may, on their return to their home, gladden all hearts with good news of what grace has done! Is there one present? Let him partake in the same earnest entreaty.
If there be such a Church in our house, let us order it well, and let all act as in the sight of God. Let us move in the common affairs of life with studied holiness, diligence, kindness, and integrity. More is expected of a Church than of an ordinary household; family worship must, in such a case, be more devout and hearty; internal love must be more warm and unbroken, and external conduct must be more sanctified and Christlike. We need not fear that the smallness of our number will put us out of the list of Churches, for the Holy Spirit has here enrolled a family-church in the inspired book of remembrance. As a Church let us now draw nigh to the great head of the one Church universal, and let us beseech him to give us grace to shine before men to the glory of his name.

UN General Assembly condemns Israeli attack on UNIFIL in Lebanon, Israel to confiscate UNRWA HQ for illegal settlements
The shelling of UN peacekeepers’ positions in Lebanon (UNIFIL) by the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) is not and cannot be justified, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, said. However, despite the wave of world criticism, Israel continues its numerous offensives in the Middle East.
UN General Assembly president condemns Israeli attack on UNIFIL
UN General Assembly President Philemon Yang on Thursday condemned an Israeli attack on UN peacekeeping positions in Lebanon that wounded two peacekeepers. General Assembly spokesperson Sharon Birch said in response to a question at a press conference, adding that Yang called on all parties to comply with their obligations under international law and international humanitarian law:
“He realises the crucial role that UNIFIL plays in terms of the maintenance of peace and security.”
The UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said earlier that its headquarters in Naqoura and other facilities had been repeatedly shelled by Israeli forces, injuring two peacekeepers.
Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of France Unbowed (LFI), commented on the news on his X:
“UNIFIL shelling after schools and hospitals confirms Netanyahu’s choice of deliberately demonstrative denial of all accepted international principles. How much longer will this disgrace continue?”
Since September 23, Israel has launched massive airstrikes against Hezbollah targets across Lebanon, killing at least 1,323 people, injuring more than 3,700, and displacing more than 1.2 million.
The air campaign was an escalation in a year of cross-border hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah since Tel Aviv launched a brutal offensive on the Gaza Strip that killed more than 42,000 people, mostly women and children, after a Hamas attack last year.
Despite international warnings that the Middle East region is on the brink of a regional war due to Israel’s relentless attacks on Gaza and Lebanon, Tel Aviv expanded the conflict by launching a ground invasion of southern Lebanon on October 1.
Italy’s former PM and head of the 5-Star Movement (M5S) Giuseppe Conte wrote on X:
“NETANYAHU FIRES AT OUR BASES. WHERE ARE THE PATRIOTS? NO MORE WEAPONS TO ISRAEL. As we understand, the feeble voice of the Italian Government has given birth to a “formal protest” towards Israel after the criminal government of Netanyahu – which has exterminated over 40 thousand Palestinian civilians, women and children in Gaza – has also shot today at Unifil bases with Italian soldiers in Lebanon.”
Israel to confiscate UNRWA HQ in East Jerusalem for illegal settlements
Israel has decided to confiscate the headquarters of the UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) in the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood in occupied East Jerusalem in order to build illegal settlements in its place, media reports said. The Israel Hayom newspaper reported:
“According to information released to the public today, the entire UNRWA area in Ma’alot Dafna, Jerusalem, is slated to become a housing project with 1,440 units.”
It also noted that the project is at a “preparatory stage.” UNRWA did not comment on the report.
Aryeh King, Jerusalem’s deputy mayor, has repeatedly demanded in recent months that thousands of illegal housing units be built to expand the Ma’alot Dafna settlement.
Israeli authorities ordered UNRWA to vacate its East Jerusalem headquarters on May 30 within 30 days, under the pretext that the UN agency “failed to obtain permission” from the Israel Land Administration to build a facility on the land.
However, UNRWA spokesman Jonathan Fowler told Anadolu Agency at the time:
“We learned about the decision through the media and did not receive any information directly from the Israeli authorities. We are unequivocal about our stance. UNRWA has maintained a presence in this headquarters and another facility in East Jerusalem since the early 1950s.”
At the same time as the decision to confiscate the headquarters, Israel’s Knesset, or parliament, is preparing to pass second and third readings of a bill that would designate UNRWA as “terrorist” and prevent it from operating in East Jerusalem.
Israel is seeking the closure of UNRWA because it is the only UN agency with a specific mandate to meet the basic needs of Palestinian refugees.
UNRWA was established by UN resolution in 1949 and is mandated to provide assistance and protection to refugees in five areas of operation: Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip.
Israel’s relentless bombardment of Gaza killed 65 people in 24 hours
Israel continues its attacks on residential areas and settlers’ tents in the Gaza Strip, killing more than 65 Palestinians in 24 hours.
Medical sources reported that 28 Palestinians were killed and 92 were injured in a massacre carried out by the army in a bombing attack on a school in Deir al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip. In addition, several Palestinians were killed during the Israeli army’s ground incursion into the northern Gaza Strip, which continued for the sixth consecutive day.
Another Palestinian was killed by the occupation forces in Jabalia camp in the northern Gaza Strip. The Israeli army also attacked Maghazi camp in the central Gaza Strip, killing one Palestinian and injuring another. One Palestinian was also injured in an artillery attack on Al-Da’wa Street, east of Nusseirat camp.

cw: sex work
do you have any recs for how I could go about looking into Aphrodite as the patron of sex workers? I'm a sw'er & I'd like to set up an altar for my job specifically (I'm thinking Aphrodite & Peitho, any other suggestions are fully welcome!!) & everyone always talks about her as the patron of SW'ers but beyond being the goddess of love and procreation no one seems to talk about how or why. (Idr who posted it but I saw the recent post about Aphrodite & Sailors and that connection to prostitutes and really appreciated that but I want more 🥺🥺)
Briefly put: she’s the patron of sex workers because she’s the patron of sex and pleasure, not only for procreation. As stated in the Aphrodite of the Sea post (yup, it was me), the link between prostitution and the sea is a very down-to-earth one. Harbours were perfect spots for sex workers and sailors have always been an important pool of clients. To cite Denise Demetriou in Tῆς πάσης ναυτιλίης φύλαξ: Aphrodite and the Sea :
Aphrodite guided men and women’s sexual maturation or sexual adventures, whether these were legitimate or not, as she would if they had been traveling on sea. The interplay between love and the metaphor of sailing, however, works precisely because Aphrodite is the patron of both sex and seafaring.
Now, outside of the realm of the sea and stricly about sex work, there is this version of the origin of Aphrodite Pandemos that I think would be interesting for you:
Others tell us it was Solon who erected the sanctuary of Aphrodite Pandemos, with the money accumulated from brothel keepers:
[...]
“And Philemon, in his Brothers, records incidentally that Solon, impelled by the crisis which comes in young men’s lives, purchased and established wenches in houses of resort; just so Nicander of Colophon records the same in the third book of his History of the Affairs of Colophon; Nicander alleges that Solon was the first to found a temple of Aphrodite Pandemos from the profits taken in by the women in charge of the houses.”
In spite of the comic and perhaps polemical tone, this statement puts the same Aphrodite, who was guarantor of the unity of “all the people,” in connection with prostitution. This ambivalence can be explained, as Vincianne Pirenne-Delforge says, because “she is the deity of mixis, of the ‘mixing’ between creatures, that she is called upon to intervene in the cohesion of the ‘body’ politic.
- Elisabetta Pala, Aphrodite of the Akropolis: evidence from attic pottery In: Brill’s Companion to Aphrodite
I suggest you look into general books about prositution in the Ancient world and material about Aphrodite. There’s usually at least a mention of it somewhere. I should warn you however, that a lot of the scholarly interest in sex-work relating to Aphrodite is centered around the debate regarding the city of Corinth and its so-called sacred prostitution. I have written a summary of the debate here, which would probably be good to read first so you know what you’re getting into.
To be honest, I find it very worrying that you mention having only seen Aphrodite being portrayed as the goddess of love and procreation. To me it only seems symptomatic of how many modern worshippers are erasing this aspect of hers, despite being historically attested.

@crzynight
Naoya is clutching a wound on his side as he looks up to see the butterfly man himself, Philemon.
“Y.. you saved me?” He blinked a few times and then winced as he tried to sit up. “I thought you couldn’t get involved with human affairs?”

NEWS OF TRADITION

[Kently Estate]
Princess Lara: Thank you for letting Uncle Louis host Thanksgiving this year. I know you all changed things for me, and I appreciate it.
Queen Katherine: You don't have to thank me, sissy. Anything for my new nephew! I always forget how much closer you are to Kently than the palace.
Princess Lara: Yes, and with Anna and the kids back at Kently, we're all somewhat together again.

Queen Katherine: "How is Anthony enjoying fatherhood?"
Princess Lara: "He's adjusted well. We got married, father died, you became queen, then we got pregnant. It's been a challenging two years. He's been so supportive."

Queen Katherine: (smiles) I'm glad to hear. Jazmyn! I can't believe how big Jackson has gotten!
Lady Jazmyn: Girl! He doesn't miss a meal!
Queen Katherine: (laughs) Two year olds!

Princess Margot: Time to eat!
Princess Lara: I'll tell the children. I think they're still outside.
- - - - - LATER - - - - -

Princess Lara: The children should be right in.

Princess Hattie: This Philemon scandal is all over the news!
Princess Margot: I thought that had died down.
Princess Hattie: No! He lied on the House floor last week, in front of the minority leader. He resigned!

Princess Lara: What?
Princess Hattie: Birch! He was Philemon's undoing.
Princess Margot: The Osteopath?

Prince Louis: Right after Philemon's statement, Birch appeared on SNN, where he endorsed Philemon's version and dismissed all rumors and insinuations as "baseless".
Princess Hattie: What Birch didn't know was the Metropolitan Police was investigating his affairs. They had interviewed 139 of his friends, associates and patients, and had maintained a 24-hour watch on his home for two weeks.
Prince Louis: Among those who gave statements was Wilson, who contradicted her earlier assurances and confirmed her sexual relationship with Philemon, providing corroborative details of the interior of the Cavalier Terrace house.
Princess Margot: What? That's a security breach.

Lady Jazmyn: What's the Cavalier Terrace house?
Prince Louis: Where Philemon and his wife live, as a member of the House of Commons.

Princess Hattie: Well, Philemon confessed the truth to Keller's private secretary Monday, confirming that he had lied, resigned from the government, and applied for the office of steward of the Shaltern Hundreds in order to give up his House of Commons seat.
Prince Louis: I'm sorry, Kate. We should change the subject.
Prince Leo: Why should Kate care? None of this is her fault!

Prince Louis: The sims of Windengurg take everything out on the monarchy. The good and especially the bad. The government is formed in the sovereigns name so these are acts, many believe, are directive and reflective of the crown. Mommy always said "the Crown is a delicate jewel."

Queen Katherine: Speaking of, I'd like to make a grade gesture this Christmas. I'd like to restart an old family tradition - Christmas Day walk to church in Beaverdam.
Prince Louis: Oh, Kate. How lovely!
Queen Katherine: We haven't done it since 1992. Therefore, I'd like you all to spend Christmas with me in Beaverdam this year. Lara, please bring anyone you need to help you and the baby.
- - - - - LATER - - - - -

Queen Rowena: I'm so proud of you. Your father would be, too.
Queen Katherine: Thank you, mommy.
Queen Rowena: I know I haven't been myself lately. Losing your father was very tough but I'm feeling much better.

Princess Lara: You don't have to apologize, mommy. We're just glad you're feeling better.
Queen Katherine: I will have a full dowry starting in January. I neglected so many charities.
Princess Lara: Same here! Kate has given Anthony and I several more patronages.
- - - - -

Queen Katherine: Have you talked to King Felipe lately?
Prince Louis: Of Oasis Springs? No. Why?
Queen Katherine: Whatever happened between he and father? I was reading fathers journals and he mentioned a trip you two took and a deal that was made but his next entry discussing the king was very unfavorable.
Prince Louis: Oh. I...uh... I wouldn't know, Kate. I wouldn't think too much of it.

Prince Louis: How is your Christmas speech going?
Queen Katherine: I've made so many changes since granny died. I fear I will make many more edits before we film.
Prince Louis: I'm always here if you need to share your thoughts and ideas, bear.
Queen Katherine: Thank you, Uncle Louis.

Queen Katherine: (hugging) We'll see you in Beaverdam.

Encouragement to Be Strong
1 You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. 2 Entrust the things you heard from me, in the presence of many witnesses, to faithful men who will also be able to teach others.
3 Share hardships as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 4 No one serving as a soldier gets entangled in the affairs of everyday life. If he does, he will not please the one who enlisted him. 5 Also, if someone competes as an athlete, he does not receive a crown unless he competes according to the rules. 6 The hardworking farmer should receive a share of the crops first. — 2 Timothy 2:1-6 | Evangelical Heritage Version (EHV) The Holy Bible, Evangelical Heritage Version®, EHV®, © 2019 Wartburg Project, Inc. Living in Grace
and I just want to say you are free! Hello, you’ve found the Senior Adult Sunday School Class of Corinth Baptist Church in Singleton, Ms. The title of our lesson for today is: Living in Grace
This will be our 3rd
In a 5-lesson series under the general heading of:
Facing Adversity
We’ll be drawing Scripture from the Book of Philemon
Let’s start this lesson off with a question:
What is your initial
response to the word,
slavery?
Does that word dredge up an emotional response in you
at all?
If so, why?
Well, that really depends
on a number of factors,
now, doesn't it?
Here in the United States
in the 21st century,
most people would associate slavery with that
evil and racist institution that was in place in this country
during the era of the
Civil War and the two
centuries that led up to it.
It is for this very reason,
as we look at Paul's letter to Philemon, we need to be
careful with our understanding
of slavery in this book of
the Bible.
It's important to understand the context of the words as well as the
context of the culture
as much as possible
when interpreting Scripture.
Though some things about humanity never changes, we need to understand that life in the time of the Apostles was very different when compared to today.
Slavery in the first century
was based primarily on economics, not skin color.
When Paul wrote his letter
to Philemon,
roughly a quarter of the population of the Roman Empire were slaves of one sort or another…. as the economy of Rome was based on
slave labor.
People were enslaved for
a number of reasons:
being prisoners of war,
defaulting on a debt,
being born into a slave
family,
and some people even voluntarily
indentured themselves to
make ends meet.
But, freedom for slaves was possible... and common,
being granted by masters
or purchased through
personal savings.
Seems to me the slavery that so many of us look
back to 150 years ago in this land was considerably different
than in Roman days.
I've never heard of slaves
being able to earn any money at all
during the slave days
of the Americas.
It really was an entirely different
world during Roman days.
Paul was under house arrest
in Rome when he wrote this
letter to Philemon.
Philemon was a wealthy man and a
believer in the gospel of Jesus Christ, and obviously
a friend of Paul's.
I don't know how many
slaves Philemon owned.
But, one of them, a man
named Onesimus, (OH-nes-e-mus), had run
away from Philemon, his
master.
I've read in other places
that Onesimus had robbed Philemon in order to have
the funds he'd need to
flee as far away from his
master as possible.
I've also read that there
was a good chance that Onesimus could have possibly stumbled across
Epaphroditus, (EE-pie-froh-die-tus), en route to
Rome.
Epaphroditus was an envoy of the Philippian church who traveled to Rome to assist the Apostle Paul while he awaited his audience with Caesar.
And, it's entirely possible
that Epaphroditus may have encouraged the run-away slave to seek out Paul in order to gain advice.
Regardless of how he found
his way to Paul, he also found his way to Jesus,
for Paul calls him "his son" in this letter.
Onesimus became a Christian
while in the company of Paul.
Under his tutelage
Onesimus became convicted of
his own wrongdoing toward
his master and was willing
to go back to Colossae.
It was 1200 miles from Rome
to Colossae.
Onesimus had it made as he could have easily concealed himself in the population
of Rome; there were over
a million people there at that time. With this understanding, let’s get into the 1st section of our lesson for today.
Section 1: God’s People are Compelled by Love
Philemon 8-14;
8. For this reason, although I have great boldness in Christ to command you to do what is right,
9. I appeal to you, instead, on the basis of love. I, Paul, as an elderly man and now also as a prisoner of Christ Jesus,
10. appeal to you for my son, Onesimus.
I fathered him while I was in chains.
11. Once he was useless to you, but now he is useful both to you and to me.
12. I am sending him back to you as a part of myself. Receive him as a part of myself.
13. I wanted to keep him with me, so that in my imprisonment for the gospel he might serve me in your place.
14. But I didn’t want to do anything without your consent, so that your good deed might not be out of obligation, but of your own free will.
What we're seeing here
is another example of
God working all things
for the good of believers.
We have no way of
knowing for sure that Onesimus robbed his master when he ran away.
What we do know
is that Philemon
now had the opportunity
to receive something back
that was much more than a slave.
Onesimus, through faith in
Jesus Christ,
had become a brother in Christ to his master.
In verse 10,
Paul used the descriptive
terms, "son" and "father"
in a spiritual sense to show his deep affection for Onesimus, and to show that their relationship was more as that of
family.
It's obvious in his letter to Philemon that Paul and Onesimus had become
especially close.
And, this is reflected
in the tone of Paul's
letter to Philemon;
that Paul wished for Philemon to now treat Onesimus as a family member in Christ.
Paul, thanks to his own
"Damascus moment,"
knew first hand about
the transforming power
of God to take even enemies and make them
family.
Paul had had a front-row seat seeing what God could do and
how His grace triumphs over sin.
God had taken Paul,
a persecutor of the church,
and made him a son,
a brother with Christ,
a brother in the church,
and now,
a father in the faith
to others, including
both Philemon and Onesimus.
We Christians are described
in the Bible as
"the people of God."
As the people of God,
we're brothers and sisters
in Christ; we are family!
Because of the atoning death of Christ on the cross,
the church was created for
both Jews and Gentiles to become this single
"people of God."
We are a people who strive to live under
God's ruling care
while we're protected and
cared for by Him.
Now, how was Philemon
going to receive
Onesimus when he returned
to his master?
His options were to follow that gracious and forgiving
option that Paul presented to him
in the letter,
or to deal with Onesimus
according to the harsh
societal standard that
was in place for dealing
with runaway slaves.
Here in North America,
some of the Indian tribes,
like the Souix,
would capture slaves from their neighboring tribes.
If a slave ran away and
was re-captured,
it wasn't uncommon for them
to be hobbled,
made lame,
by cutting their hamstrings.
As for the Romans
concerning slavery;
it was perfectly legal to even
sell their own children
into slavery,
(talk about an incentive
to be a good child!).
The Romans most often beat
their re-captured slaves;
but they also had a brand
that was burned into their
foreheads that marked
them for life as a runaway.
Besides that, killing a slave
wasn't considered murder.
? So don't you know how much
faith and trust Onesimus must have had to do the right thing and return to
his master, Philemon?
So, what were Paul's
views on slavery?
To understand that,
we've got to take a
closer look at the
convention of slavery
during the 1st century.
In considering the church's practice and perspective on slavery, let's look at
some things about it at the time.
Slavery was an embedded
part of the social structure,
welfare system, and
economic activity of the
ancient world.
The absence of a modern democracy made it practically impossible to launch any sort
of effective political
revolution against it.
The most effective means of
improving the life of a slave
was for the master
to treat him or her kindly
with the prospect of
future freedom.
Paul addressed the slaves
in 1st Corinthians 7:21 to pursue their freedom when
it was feasible.
He also wrote in
1st Timothy 1:9-10, that slave traders were being immoral.
In 1st Corinthians 12:13,
Galatians 3:28,
Ephesians 6:8,
and Colossians 3:11,
Paul declared that both the slave and the free were equal in Christ.
And, as we've seen in
this letter to Philemon,
Paul was gently "strong-arming"
Philemon to accept Onesimus in a radically different way than was typical between masters and
slaves.
It was descriptive of a mind-set that, when practiced
more widely,
would cultivate an
ethic and a culture
that would effectively
undermine the practice
of slavery.
Section 2:
God’s People are Related as Family
Philemon 15-17;
15. For perhaps this is why he was separated from you for a brief time, so that you might get him back permanently,
16. no longer as a slave, but more than a slave , as a dearly loved brother.
He is especially so to me, but even more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord.
17. So if you consider me a partner, accept him as you would me.
It's obvious from
these Scriptures that
Paul had pondered....
contemplated the reasons
about why Onesimus had
been separated from
Philemon.
Paul had come to the
inescapable conclusion
that God had wanted for
Onesimus to join His family.
We don't know, for sure,
all of the details that
led Onesimus to run away
from his master.
We don't even know for a
fact that Onesimus had
robbed Philemon.
But what we do know
is that God's sovereign
grace works through
human affairs.
Though Paul understood well
this business of slavery,
he focused on the redemptive
aspect of the cross in
Onesimus's life.
Since being born again,
Onesimus was no longer
merely a slave;
now he was a brother
in Christ
among the people
of God.
Now look;
I don't know of any
direct evidence of
what Philemon did
concerning the returned
slave, Onesimus.
But wouldn't it be
reasonable to assume
that if Philemon
preserved and even
circulated that letter
among the churches,
that he did, in fact,
do as Paul had asked
him to do?
Did he set Onesimus
free?
Who knows?
But I truly believe
that the relationship
between the master and
the slave was
greatly altered.
And, in my opinion,
Philemon most likely
did grant Onesimus'
freedom.
And....And....
I also believe that
Onesimus' response to
his probable freedom,
was to stay on in the
service of Philemon....
as a brother-in-Christ.
Section 3:51
God’s People are Gracious With Each Other
Philemon 18-22;
18. And if he has wronged you in any way, or owes you anything, charge that to my account.
19. I, Paul, write this with my own hand: I will repay it, not to mention to you that you owe me even your own self.
20. Yes, brother, may I have joy from you in the Lord; refresh my heart in Christ.
21. Since I am confident of your obedience, I am writing to you, knowing that you will do even more than I say.
22. But meanwhile, also prepare a guest room for me, for I hope that through your prayers I will be restored to you.
The
"Book"
of Philemon
is the
3rd shortest book
in the Bible.
And yet,
there is a
wealth of wisdom,
teaching,
and knowledge
to be had
from it's mere
335 words.
In it,
Paul extends
a fitting ...
Christ like gesture
toward Philemon
in that,
he offers to take on
any burden
Onesimus had
caused his master.
He did this
in an effort
to reconcile
these two men
to each other.
This is
a picture of
"gospel grace!"
Paul was simply
doing exactly the
same thing
Jesus Christ did.
He was willing to
take on
the penalty for
Onesimus
just as
Jesus did for us.
In this way,
Paul's effort was
to reconcile these
men,
and Jesus...well,
He did what He did
to reconcile us to
the Father.
Like I said,
it's a picture of
gospel grace.
What Paul was doing,
essentially, was asking
Philemon to forgive
Onesimus.
Forgiveness is an
interesting thing, though.
You might ask,
"What's so hard about it?
It doesn't
cost you anything."
More often than not,
it does have a cost.
In the first place,
it means letting go
of the past.
It means letting go
of the anger.
It means letting go
of the sense of
moral superiority.
It really does
require sacrifice.
But, it IS a noble act;
and, it's expected of
Christians.
!We Christians have
received the
grace and forgiveness
of God!
For this very reason,
Paul felt confident that
Philemon would obey
his request and
welcome Onesimus home
as a beloved brother
in Christ. Now, if you’ve watched the past few lessons, you’ve watched me as I learned something about Paul’s imprisonment. A 4th missionary journey undertaken by Paul, AFTER his release from house arrest in Rome, was something I had been completely ignorant of. And yet, it did happen. Everything points to the fact that Paul did get to stand before Caesar and answer to the charges he’d been under arrest for…. for the previous four years. In fact, the final verse in this letter to Philemon, Paul even goes so far as to request that his friend prepare a guestroom for him, as he was anticipating his release from Roman custody. (Tongue-in-cheek; Now, how do you suppose he could have known that?)
In closing,
I'd just like to
point out this.
The gospel is the
story of Christ dying
in our place and
being raised for us,
and this story is to
affect
and to shape the
way Christians live.
The gospel is the
story the Holy Spirit
uses to radically
transform not only
the way we think,
but also the way we
treat others,
especially those
within the church.
Let's pray.....
