Song of the Day: March 28
"Je Suis Malade" by Lara Fabian
#song of the day#just here for a second (laptop's gonna die too actually) before I go into this meeting and then hopefully straight to sleep#(sleep after not in the meeting)#the Thursday meeting to plead for the lift of my project has been moved to Tuesday. I worry I'm a fish exhausting myself on the line#I should have slept but I didn't! or I kind of did but it didn't work#I did make a giant pot of really tasty soup#the last cabbage from storage and some new spring garlic greens and carrots and potatoes and polish sausage and a ton of mushroom stock#I had no idea what I was going to make when I started it--just started chopping things--and I'm so glad it worked out#this song played while I cooked and I love it--big voice for days and days#I worked with guy from France for a semester and we talked about music a lot#he thought it was very funny that I listened to so many genres and still it was all in English#it's interesting and humbling thing how privileged we are to have access to so much of the internet in our first language#so much media available all the time#anyway I do know not only all the words to a handful of Lara Fabian songs but also I brushed up on my French so I could understand her#gorgeous gorgeous voice. incredible music#I forget where I was really going with this. I gotta get some sleep

frankieeee im making soup tonight for a dinner party but idk what soup to make What is your favorite soup recipe!
OOOH GOOD QUESTION. splitting this up so awkwardly bc i said so much… also full disclosure i was vegan for 5 years until a year ago so most of the soups i make nowadays are still at least vegetarian 😔 unless you don’t eat meat in which case 😄
you can never go wrong with a classic minestrone imo which is basically a broth of your choosing with whatever vegetables you have on hand (https://ricette.giallozafferano.it/Minestrone-di-verdure.html)
but i’m also a big fan of coconut milk-based soups such as https://ohmyveggies.com/thai-pumpkin-soup-recipe/
or a good chicken soup with a hefty amount of dill ❤️
i think you can never go wrong with anything that has a root vegetable base (potatoes, pumpkin, winter squashes, etc) and i love anything i can add loads of ginger to!!
some fav soups of mine are carrot and ginger (exactly what it sounds like, i roast carrots and fresh ginger with oil salt pepper and it would be mad delish with curry powder too & blend it up with broth and you could totally add cream or milk),
pastina with chicken broth and tons of grated cheese (i follow my heart when making it there’s no recipe but it’s comfort food),
oooh you could even do a broth started with sautéed zucchini in a pan (onions, some sort of cured meat if you’re a meat eater, that type of stuff) and pasta!!!
my mom did a lot of soups growing up perché siamo napoletane and that’s peasant food so OH MY GOD LENTIL SOUP. LENTIL SOUP. carrot celery onion lentils add some fresh greens once boiling maybe some chopped tomatoes…
my mom also made this awesome mushroom soup with quinoa kale spinach and cinnamon when i was sick last year and it healed me (spiritually).
escarole soup obvs http://www.christopherpless.com/recipe/zuppa-di-scarola/ also
zuppa di ceci chickpea soup was an absolute STANDARD in my house we usually didn’t blend it (whole chickpeas https://ricette.giallozafferano.it/Zuppa-di-ceci.html) but it can totally be blended too (https://www.italianfoodforever.com/2009/11/zuppa-di-ceci-creamy-chickpea-soup/)… i could go on
#i LOVED to see this ask it made my day. soup strega (me)#if any of the recipes linked have oregano i’ll kms i don’t really use recipes for anything so i just grabbed what i could find for examples#my mom trusts giallo zafferano’s italian recipes so i do by extension#i can’t eat most asian soups as i have this stupid allergy which makes me allergic to soy coconut all leafy greens all beans and legumes#and seaweed#but i fucking love chickpeas lentils they’re like best friends from childhood i don’t speak to anymore#i have yet to explore fish soups esp since i can’t have soy seaweed etc maybe i’ll have to go northern euro for that

I can't remember the last time I ate chips.
#well i had a few pieces at my brother's birthday party.#but besides that nothing#i ate so healthy for the past 3 weeks#it's incredible#some pizza here and turkey burgers and fries and diet coke#because of some birthdays and celebrations#but besides that i've been super healthy#to the point where i refused to go and eat out on my week off#i even had lentil soup which i normally don't eat#went to mcdonalds with my dad and brother and did not want anything#did not eat chocolate cake at my brother's party#did not eat ice cream when going out for dinner with my family on Sunday#Ate shrimp zucchini pasta instead of pizza and the pizza restaurant I went to on Tuesday#Had baked fish and leafy greens and mushrooms and no dessert at the buffet#i swear my multivitamins are working wonders#im so convinced nutritional deficiencies cause cravings#i'm craving turmeric water or something like that#haven't been out for coffee in a while either

For the uneducated, that's pea soup, Kalakukko (Fish and pork baked in a rye bread), Rössypottu (Black pudding soup) and blood sausage.
#look green pea soup is delicious#the sausages are very regional#kalakukko is just a kind of fish...haggis#and... uh#I don't know what that is#karjalanpaisti? it's just stew#it's Rössypottu meaning a black (blood) pudding soup#Finland#Finnish cuisine

actually yknow what, no. this is not being limited to discord, yall get it too.
some general cooking tips (in which there is a brief senshi posession):
moisture is the enemy of crispy skin. pat dry with paper towel, and if you have the time and spoons, give a thorough but even coat of baking powder and let sit uncovered in your fridge overnight. this will dry out the skin nicely. for pork belly, create a tight foil boat so that only the skin is showing, and cover in salt to draw out moisture, repeating a couple times if necessary.
furikake seasoning, for the fellow rice lovers, is just nori (seaweed), sesame seeds, sugar, and msg/salt. you might have most if not all of these things already in your kitchen.
chai spice mix is just cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, cloves, nutmeg, & allspice.
pumpkin spice is just cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and ginger.
to cure your own bacon, you only need water, white and brown sugar, and a non-iodized salt - himalayan pink salt is not iodized, if you cannot find butchers curing pink salt. from there, you can add any seasoning/flavoring you want.
the truly adventurous may cook their rice in green tea for a fresh clean taste.
you can tell if a fish is truly fresh by their eyes - clear and bright is fresh, while cloudy is older or potentially has been frozen.
it's cheaper to buy a large block pack of ramen from your local asian market and repackage the bricks into sandwich bags, than to buy a box of individually packaged ones such as maruchan or top ramen.
when buying meat, look at it's fat content - more fat marbling usually means more tender + flavorful.
you can save onion skins and other vegetable scraps to make your own broth with. you can also save bones for this. mix and match ratios to create your ideal flavor.
bay leaf will always make a soup or broth taste better, but Watch Out (they are not fun to bite into on accident).
msg is, in fact, not The Devil, that was just a racist hate campaign against the chinese and other oriental races. it's literally just a type of salt. it is no more dangerous to eat than any other type of salt.
washing your rice is important because it not only improves flavor and texture by removing excess starch, but it also helps reduce any residual pesticides or dirt, or even insect fragments (please remember that rice paddies are essentially giant ponds that all kind of things live in and swim around. you should also be washing all your produce in general.)
please salt your cooking water for pastas, it just tastes better and you will be happier for it.
boiled potatoes are also improved by salt water.
if you hate vegetables, please consider trying them fried in butter or perhaps bacon grease. it is healthier to eat them fatty than not at all.
healthy food does not in fact have to taste miserable. thats a lie. they are lying to you. free yourself from your blandness shackles. enter a world of flavor.
