HOTD headcanon:

I love the idea of Daemon being the strict parent (partly inspired by Maegalkarven’s fic “Let’s fall back in love (With the world and who we are)”. Rhaenyra never really had to be the strict parent with Jace because he was always so serious and dutiful, whenever he thought he did something wrong he’d twist himself into knots trying to fix it. Luke was always so sweet and precious and cute all he had to do was widen his eyes a bit and Rhaenyra would let him off the hook.

Rhaena and Baela are the opposite. They got into everything and were serious troublemakers. You would think Rhaena would reign in Baela but she was often the one who concocted some of their more tricky and elaborate pranks and adventures. Laena always found the twins’ antics funny so Daemon was the one who had to scold the girls and punish them.

After Driftmark Daemon starts spending time with the boys and they start spending time with Rhaena and Baela and start picking up some habits. The first time Daemon is faced with four pairs of tiny eyes staring out at him from a giant pile of feathers he curses the gods for giving him four children to worry about (he doesn’t even want to think about what will happen when Joffrey is old enough to join in). He sends them all to the dragon keepers to shovel dung. The twins expect it but Lucerys is shocked that he is in trouble and Jace is terrified that Daemon is mad and that now he hates him and Luke.

Scenario:

Daemon: “You are all grounded. Go report to the dragon keepers, you are going to be scooping dung until you are old and grey.”

Rhaena and Baela: used to it 🫤

Luke: shocked that his puppy eyes didn’t work 😱

Jace: terrified that Daemon now hates them and will leave 😢

Consequently Jace’s reaction is the most effective as Daemon finds it hard to punish the kid when

A. He is usually so dutiful and serious and could use some more fun and time to be a kid.

B. He is genuinely sorry.

C. Punishing him just seems cruel at this point.

D. He has so many abandonment issues that Daemon is TERRIFIED that one wrong move will either scar Jace for life or forever ruin their slowly growing relationship.

E. Jace was most likely just going along with the other kids to make sure they didn’t get hurt.

A lot of the time Daemon will let Jace off but Jace will feel guilty and help the other kids anyway.

I just love the idea of an invested, slightly strict, really good dad Daemon.

Being so against shipping that you literally strip characters of who they are is so wild to me. Like you are so mad people see the obvious chemistry between two people that you would take those characters and make them completely unrecognizable. Adding romance or a storyline related to love does not diminish or lessen the story. Making characters who support each other, push each other, rely on each other, then being upset that people enjoy these two characters and want them together is insane. Anti shipping culture feels so misogynistic and anti fan culture as well. Like you want people to be so against a ship that you would rather have character assassination. All this to say:

One of Rhaenyra's biggest opps (in HOTD) really was her own father. Because how are you going to proclaim your daughter as heir, only to then marry her best friend and have four kids, three sons, in an environment that is against women already as is but even more so with one sitting on the Iron Throne? And then, not only, do you not prepare her for anything political but scold her publicly, which isn't good for her image, and just....hardly do anything to aid her until you're on your last leg? And yet there are still fans saying he was a "great dad" and that he "did all he could". HA, I THINK NOT!

Romance: Daemon and Nettles.

I've cracked the code. (not really)

Daemon and Nettles are written as a romance in fire and blood. Whether it was or wasn't, go argue with the bards.

But here's how it's structured:

A. Daemon is an epic lover throughout the narrative and Nettles as someone who lives up to his hype in a few months.

B. Then they're sent away together. How or why it ended up being them is never stated in the narrative.

C. Maidenpool is just framed as a strange time for them. Yes, we get Septon Eustace explaining the accusations, but he's the worst:

1. Mushroom is the Pro Black voice and the only one who explicitly calls them lovers.

2. Maester Norren says that Daemon doted on Nettles as a man would his daughter, but his words immediately draw parallels to the relationship Daemon had with a young Rhaenyra, who he ended up in a sexual relationship with

3. The words used from the discussions of Maidenpool never discredit their relationship. "More than fond," "no matter how foul her treasons," "the prince would burn Maidenpool in his wroth." It's always framed as and I use this with a pang of disgust,"Touch her, and you die." If Nettles is harmed in any way, they'd have to kill Daemon or face the fact that he'd kill them.

4. They disappear with the impossible choice. I'm so sorry, but no one knowing what happened during their last night together was a purposeful inclusion.

5. Black rams and final goodbyes. The whole black ram is Daemon thing, and the fact that she's crying leaving him and there isn't a word between them but Caraxes screeches and breaks Jonquil's tower in the place where the famous love story occurred.

6. Daemon calling Aemond to fight only after Nettles has left. Something we are told is fatal by himself.

7. Does Daemon live?

I hope not, but it's a story peddled by the bards of the narrative that he survives and lives out the rest of his days with her as a love story. We are told it's unlikely in the narrative, but we are told it regardless.

Their's is a love story, in the sense that that's the way it is written. The lens it is explained within the narrative is one of a love story where either way she's saved by him or later safe with him.

Whether you believe it or not, whether we like it or not, it is what we get. This is where I think a lot of confusion comes from. They are written as a romance. If you believe it, there is support. If you don't, you can deduce from the story what was likely instead of listening to the bias you interpret (in the sense that class, race, gender, status, etc) and if you think they are father and daughter, oh?

Old topic but it was always so crazy to me how people took that scene of Daemon not answering Baela when she called out to him as him "ignoring his daughter's existence", apparently completely forgetting that Daemon literally just came from an incredibly nasty, bitter fight with his spouse. Like a really massive, terrible fight. Him not answering clearly wasn't anything personal to Baela, but that he was just so upset and angry and hurt that he didn't want to talk to anyone at that moment. Which is something I'm sure everyone can relate to and understand but for some reason everyone just loses all their braincells when it comes to Daemon and assumes the absolute worst of him, coming to conclusions that make no sense if you just took a second to think about it.

HOTD fic idea:

The whole Rhaesaria thing definitely took me by surprise but I very much like the idea of them. My fic idea is that Rhaenyra and Mysaria got together much earlier in the series. In fact she was there for each of the boy’s births and loves them as if they were her own children.

I just want Mysaria to be right there with Rhaenyra all throughout her time in King’s Landing. I want Mysaria to give Rhaenyra the support that none of the men in her life could due to absence, grief, or the malicious rumors swirling around.

I want Mysaria comforting Jacaerys when he hears the rumors about him and his siblings being bastards. I want Mysaria planning the downfall of Crispy after the seeing how he trains the boys, HER boys. I want Mysaria to threaten Alicent after she made Rhaenyra walk to her chambers after giving birth (maybe she threatened Daeron and that is why Alicent sent him to Oldtown. Maybe she killed him and that is why we never see him).

I want Mysaria to love Rhaenyra so much and I want that love to be returned. Rhaenyra May love Harwin and Daemon and even Laenor (as a cherished friend), but none of those men have ever been able to support and defend her the way she needs. I want Mysaria to be the one who holds Rhaenyra and tells her what she needs to hear, whether that is that everything will be alright or that she needs to be a dragon and protect the children.

Rhaenyra may still marry Daemon but I want Mysaria to still very much be a part of that relationship even if it is just Rhaenyra refusing to let Mysaria go and her and Daemon very begrudgingly getting along for the sake of the children and Rhaenyra.

I just want Rhaenyra and Mysaria to live their best life with their hoard of kids as they subtly scheme and plot against the Greens. I want all the love, all the devotions, and I want to see the unhinged lengths they will go for each other and their kids.

I watch as Daemon storms out of the King's chambers. I had heard what he said and it is curious why he is defending my daughter instead of belittling her. 

I follow after him as I think about what Viserys had said to me before his brother burst in.

“Rhaenyra found me speaking with your daughter…alone.” He says plainly but I don't miss the blush on his cheeks nor the scowl on his lips. 

What were you going to do to my girl, old friend? I think fighting the images of him forcing himself upon her. 

“That is…” I start but find no words are right without ruining my daughter or offending the Princess.

“Awful? Yes I know.” Viserys says before hissing as the Maesters poke at a particularly sensitive spot on his back. “Rhaenyra is having a fit, no amount of threats or promises are calming her. It truly is a mess.” He continues.

I can’t help the rage that fills my belly. For this man who calls himself King lets his daughter who is a Princess like a toddler when she is well into her marriageable age. 

“Yes, quite a problem.” I say through gritted teeth. Viserys says he has no clue why Rhaenyra is the way she is, but I know why. She is spoiled, told just because she has a pretty dragon and face she can do as she pleases. But the hard truth is, that additude will be her downfall. 

“Which is why I have made a decision on the whole wife situation.” Viserys says looking up at me like a child who knows they are about to be scolded. 

“And what is that?” I respond when he falls silent avoiding eye contact.

He takes a deep breath before turning to look up at me again with eyes of worry. “That I will not take another.” 

I can’t help but gasp, for I knew Viserys wasn’t the brightest but he never was a fool. I take a moment to figure out how to respond but he beats me to it.. 

“I know, I know, I need heirs as I have none. But I thought of two options, one I name Rhaenyra my heir.” He says but we both grimace as we both know that won’t end well for the realm. 

“I hate to say it, Your Grace, but the hard truth is the realm will never stand behind a female heir. Princess Rhaenys and yourself proved that, and though you may not marry, your brother is and he can have heirs, male heirs.” 

Viserys only sighs before nodding his head. “My thoughts exactly. Daemon would finally bed his ‘Bronze Bitch’ as he likes to call her, if only to spite me. Which is why we have another option.” 

I stop trying to figure out what other option we have other than Rhaenyra or Daemon being the named heir. Especially since the KIng seems set on not having another wife. 

Viserys seems to notice my confusion as he continues without letting me speak, which is rare as he usually makes me speak for him. 

“I could make Daemon’s son heir.” He says and I scoff shaking my head.

“I apoligize for my crudeness, Your Grace, but we would have a better chance of convincing your brother to kill his Blod Wyrm before we convince him to bed his ‘Bronze Bitch’.” 

“Your right, which is why we need to find him a new wife, one he will actually lay with. And just so we’re clear this is my final decision. If Daemon won’t lay with his new wife, Rhaenyra will be named heir.”

I go to speak but then the chamber doors burst open and the very man we were speaking of storms in.

I’m brought back to the present when Daemon turns into a hall that leads to the gates that goes almost directly to the streets of silk. I can’t miss this chance, I may have lost Viserys as a way to have my blood on the throne, but I won’t miss this chance. Especially not after hearing how he defended my daughter.

“Prince Daemon.” I call out fighting the urge to flinch when he turns and glares my way. No matter how long I work with these Targaryens I will never get used to the fire that fills their eyes. They truly are the blood of the dragon.

“How can I help you, Hand?” He asks with a level of mistrust in his voice.

I take this as a invitation to step forward so we can speak more privately. “The King just told me he won’t remarry.” I say in a hushed tone.

Daemon seems shocked but that is quickly overshadowed by suspicion. 

“And why would he choose that?” He asks eyeing me with accusation.

I sigh trying to find the best wording, Daemon cares for his niece though he will be the first to say she is a spoiled thing and needs to learn what the word duty means. “Rhaenyra–” I start only for him to sigh and nods his head. 

“You don’t need to finish, let me guess. Rhaenyra had one of her tantrums and now he’s trying to make her happy by putting his rein in jeopardy?” He asks but his tone has a bored edge to it, as if he isn’t shocked. And I don’t blame him, for neither am I.

“Yes, precisely, and on top of that he has some ideas on who the heir could be.” I say fighting the smirk that wishes to rise to my lips when I see him scowl.

“I am his heir.” He hisses out.

“Oh come now, my Prince, you truly thought that would stick. You were always going to be sumplanted, either by a son, or Rhaenyra.” 

He glares my way before scoffing with a whisper from his lips “Of course he would.” 

“Though he doesn’t seem fond of the idea Rhaenyra being heir, he has another idea.” I say purposely leaving out the second option hoping he’d take the bait.

“And if Rhaenyra isn’t his heir…then who is?” He asks obviously impatient by now.

“His other idea is that your first son being his heir.” 

He laughs throwing his head back. “Oh thats amazing! I would father cut my own cock off than fuck that Bronze Bitch.” He responds with chuckle. 

I only smirk nodding my head. “Yes which is why he wishes to annul your marriage.” I say which stops his laughter and his face morphes to pure shock. 

“Will I be able to choose the wife I take?” He asks eyeing me suspiciously. 

“As far as I have been told, yes.” I respond not giving him time to respond. “Which is why I wished to speak to you. Rhaenyra caught Viserys and my daughter Alicent talking in his chambers…alone. I hate to even think it but we both know Rhaenyra speaks first and thinks last, she may be spreading what she found as we speak. So you know how dire it is to me, how much I truly believe she would do this to my girl, for me to come to you for help.” 

“And what ‘help’ do you need?” He asks with a smirk and I know he already knows what I am going to ask.

“Marry my Alicent, make it where the rumors will not follow her. We both gain something from this, your son on the throne, and my daughter’s reputation can be saved.” I say with a scowl I had to turn to him for help. 

He only smirks and pats me on the shoulder condescendingly. “I’ll keep her in mind when I search for a wife.” He responds before turning on his heels and leaving me in the hall alone. 

I watch him leave with a scowl. I don’t need Alicent to be a option, I need her to be the option and now I need to find out how to do that without ruining Alicent more than I already have.

I'm not enough of a book purist to not being able to enjoy headcanons, crackships etc (as a matter of fact I do love them). But seeing newbies unironically and completely serious considering aemond to "trying to be the perfect son", or "heleana is the people's princess" or "rhaenyra is calm, collected and strategic", "Daemon is the family's clown, the agent of chaos" legit gives me a headache because they are nothing like that.

And I'm not talking about ppl writing fanfics with this type of characterization, but ppl legit having takes based on the terrible portrayal of the show. And even when they go to read f&b they still have the image the show gave them because they don't seem capable of letting go.

it just feels like Jon Snow/Daenerys Targaryen character assassination all of again.

There are so many people who consider Jon to be basically ned 2.0 and Dany a mad queen-girlboss-slay

I just wish we could seperate books from adaptations. That's all
