We have three brains: The head brain, the gut and the heart.
🧠 Head (Brain): This is where our logic, intellect, and conscious thought processes are centered. Despite its importance, 90% of our behavior is influenced by our unconscious mind.
How to take care:
🧠 Do activities that stimulate your brain, such as puzzles, reading, learning new skills, or practicing mindfulness meditation. These activities can help improve cognitive function and maintain brain health.
🧠 Healthy nutrition, regular exercise, adequate sleep, and managing stress are crucial for brain health. Physical health directly impacts your cognitive abilities and mental clarity.
🧠 Keep your brain active by learning new things regularly. This could involve hobbies, courses, or activities that challenge and stimulate your intellect.
🍽️  Gut: Often referred to as our "second brain," the gut produces a significant amount of serotonin, which plays a crucial role in mood regulation and overall emotional management.
How to take care:
🍽️  Eat a diet rich in fiber, fruits, vegetables, and probiotics (like yogurt or kefir) to promote a healthy gut microbiome. Avoid excessive sugar and processed foods.
🍽️  Drink plenty of water throughout the day to support digestion and overall gut function.
🍽️  Stress can negatively impact your gut health. Practice stress reduction techniques like deep breathing, yoga, or meditation to maintain a healthy gut-brain axis.
❤️ Heart: The heart has neural pathways that communicate with the brain, suggesting a bidirectional flow of information. This connection emphasizes the role of emotions, intuition, and feelings in our decision making and overall cognitive processes.
How to take care:
❤️ Maintain positive relationships, express your emotions constructively, and engage in activities that bring you happiness and fulfillment.
❤️ Regular exercise not only benefits the heart but also helps manage your emotions by releasing endorphins and reducing stress.
❤️ Take time for your self care activities that nurture your emotional and psychological health.

♰ . 𝒹opamine detox & why it’s important
⠀⠀
─── first of all what is the role of dopamine .ᐣ
dopamine acts on areas of the brain to give you feelings of pleasure, satisfaction & motivation. dopamine also has a role to play in controlling memory, mood, sleep, learning, concentration, movement & other body functions.
⠀⠀
─── what is a dopamine detox (fasting) .ᐣ
dopamine detox is a form of fasting from any activities or pleasures that produce dopamine so that drive for quick rewards decreases.
⠀⠀
─── what are the benefits of doing dopamine detox .ᐣ
𝟭 . regulates your dopamine response, so your brain can function at it’s best. when dopamine level is to high it can lead to addiction, impaired decision making & mental health problem,
𝟮 . makes you feel calmer & less anxious,
𝟯 . reduce the risk of depression that social media produces by addiction & comparing your life to other people,
𝟰 . boost your sleep quality & academic performance,
remember: benefits will always depending on the person, so do NOT compare to each other ♥︎
⠀⠀
─── what to avoid during dopamine detox .ᐣ
social media: spending endless time scrolling, liking, & commenting on social media platforms can really mess with our brains because of these little dopamine hits what keep us addicted,
gaming: especially avoid the super stimulating ones. they send our dopamine levels through the roof & make it hard to pay attention to real-life stuff,
eating junk food: high-sugar & high-fat food destroy your eating habits & body, including brain,
caffeine: it gives us that kick, but it also stimulates dopamine, which is why we gotta be mindful of our caffeine intake during a detox,
nicotine, alcohol & drugs: do i really have to explain?
watching shows: binge-watching your favorite tv shows it’s amazing way to spend time & flood your brain with too much dopamine,
⠀⠀
─── how to create a detox-friendly environment .ᐣ
𝟭 . designing a digital detox space
set up an environment that minimizes digital distractions. you can do this by creating a dedicated workspace or relaxation area where you limit or eliminate access to digital devices,
𝟮 . mindful nutrition
it’s important to choose foods that help maintain balanced dopamine levels. this might involve consuming foods rich in precursors like tyrosine (found in lean proteins), clean food & nutrients like antioxidants (found in fruits and vegetables) to support overall brain health and function,
𝟯 . engaging in low-stimulus activities
low-stimulus or low-dopamine activities are those that don't trigger excessive dopamine release. examples include meditation, gentle exercise, reading, or spending time in nature. engaging in these activities during your detox helps maintain a calmer & more focused state of mind, making it easier to resist the allure of high-dopamine behaviors & substances.
creating a detox-friendly environment is crucial to supports your efforts to reduce the impact of overstimulation on your brain's reward system. it sets the stage for a healthier lifestyle and a more balanced relationship with activities that can lead to excessive dopamine release.

I see the oranges post about my parents is making the rounds again, so I figured I'd post an update about my parents and food.
So my folks are both in their sixties now (oranges story happened in the 1980s), and my dad is semi-retired and works part time from home. He has also become a huge foodie over the course of my parents' marriage, and is really into cooking. He now cooks every meal in that house, three times a day (if he's home and not traveling for work or out doing crazy outdoors shit or volunteering), and genuinely deeply enjoys it and loves cooking for my mom.
My mother is having a lot of anxieties about aging right now -- mainly because her father (my gramps) developed severe dementia prior to his death, and where my mom was his caretaker through much of his decline, she's terrified of going through the same thing. Any time she has a very normal lapse in memory, she panics that she's losing her mind.
So my dad started doing research. He listened to a podcast with an endocrinologist who talked about diet and brain health and work he'd done into how certain nutritional regimens can slow the progression of dementia, and he ended up reading a book on the topic and doing a lot of his own research into the science of nutrition with regards to neuroscience (he's pretty good at vetting real scientific sources and not just buying into boomer-facebook-pseudoscience).
And then he put them BOTH on a new, brain-healthy diet specifically optimized to cut out foods that have demonstrated a negative impact on cognitive function in studies, and including those that have been associated with benefits to brain health.
Now remember, my dad is a huge foodie. And he has 100% now committed to cutting out a number of his favorite foods because there was never a question in his mind that he wouldn't be doing this right beside my mom, as he cooks all their meals and they share those meals together. All to help my mom's brain and soothe her fears about her own mind and the future by working on any factor within their control.
I visited them last weekend and Dad's cooking is, as always, delicious. But even though they've cut out a lot of sugar, there's an innate sweetness in knowing just how much every meal he cooks is an act of love.

Please delete this if it's too nosy, but weren't you getting a degree in nutrition? What happened?
It's not too nosy, people are asking about it because I've talked about it a lot!
So the deal is that I am having trouble finding nutrition programs accepting second bachelor's students that are both A) Local and B) Affordable.
When I tried to apply in the spring there was only one state school accepting second bachelor's applications for nutrition students and it was about 500 miles away from where I live (and since I can only afford to live in CA because I'm renting from family, moving out of this house isn't an option unless I'm moving to a state with a lower cost of living).
There's at least one out-of-state school and two private schools that are accepting applicants from all kinds of students, but I have looked at the average income of registered dieticians and decided that I am not going to take out loans of $30k a year for this degree.
So what I'm doing now is waiting to see what local state schools (if any) are accepting second bachelor applicants to their nutrition programs in the fall.
I also have the option of possibly applying for a chemistry degree (some local schools are accepting physical sciences majors but not biological science majors as second bachelor's and it is possible to apply to a master's program in nutrition with a BS but you have to make up the nutrition program requirements while you're in grad school or between acceptance and starting the graduate program), trying to finish that, and then applying for a master's program once I have a BS.
I'm currently enrolled in classes at my community college for the summer and fall terms that will benefit me whether I'm able to apply for a bachelor's program or not.
At the moment my plans/options are:
Wait until fall term, apply to any local nutrition programs, wait to hear back and spend the terms until I hear back fucking around and getting a silly associate's degree for the lulz. (Potentially become an RD after 2 years in undergrad and 2 years in a master's program - finish that program about 4-5 years from now)
Wait until fall term, apply to local chemistry programs, wait to hear back and spend the terms until I hear back taking as many chemistry classes as I can. (Potentially become an RD after undergrad, take gap classes to make up prerequisites - finish that program about 5-6 years from now)
Figure out that no programs are accepting 2nd bachelor's students and go to a different community college to start working on collecting certs (1-2 years for an Associate's in network security, 1 year for a certificate in Windows administration), take a few classes at my current school to finish silly associate's degree for the lulz.
The community college that I'm looking at if the other options fall through (which seems pretty likely) is much more of a trade school than my current school and offers a nutrition certification program that focuses more on food safety and commercial kitchens whereas my current school only offers what is functionally a GE transfer degree with some pretty basic nutrition classes on top of it so I may just also try to get the nutrition certification while I'm doing computer stuff and get a silly associate's for the lulz.
So basically I would love to continue working toward a nutrition degree but I don't think it's very likely that that's going to be an option I can realistically afford. There's a part of me that's like "apply to cal state chico, try to take classes online as long as possible and live in a van for a couple semesters" (because that sounds more survivable than 60-90k in loans) but if that's the barrier to entry this is a dream that I'm okay letting die.

TIGER HRT CHAPTER 2 - MONTH 0 - EXPECTATIONS
FIRST/PREV - NEXT
---
It's been six months. Six months since that weird doctor and his inane little test to prove I'm ready, or at least, ready enough. Six months since I signed a stack of liability waivers forfeiting my right to pursue legal action for any reason up to and including untimely death. Only DAYS left before I can finally claim the entire reason I was there in the first place.
I came home today to find an information package in the mail - things I need to know before making my final commitment to the treatment. It's somewhat reassuring, really. By the sounds of it, this guy has to deal with all kinds of odd requests - I heard a rumour that someone went to him for a chimera treatment at one point - which means that he has to do all this research into side effects personally. …Although there's no telling how much of this is speculation. Concerning.
The information package is divided into different headings, roughly organized by risk factor and how outwardly noticeable they are, as if he's right here with me, trying to scare me off from it.
I decided before I even went to him that I wasn't going to let myself be scared again. Let's see what I'm in for. I sit down and start reading…
SKELETAL STRUCTURE
"Subject's height will noticeably increase. Increase of six inches is expected, increase of one foot is possible."
Huh. I guess I wouldn't mind being taller, but that's definitely going to affect what kinds of clothes I can wear. And I guess I might also get a bit wider proportionally? I'm already plus-size, maybe it'll just level it out.
"Subject may experience a conversion from plantigrade (walking on soles) to digitigrade (walking on toes)."
That makes me stop and think. I'd basically have to re-learn how to walk, and no doubt there's going to be an awkward intermediate period. Will my feet get bigger as well? They're big enough to make me dysphoric as it is. I wonder if I can get custom footwear made… I wonder how much that will cost…
"Subject will experience a reconfiguration of fingers to allow for retractable claws. Persistent soreness is to be expected."
Bluh. I've bitten my nails too close enough times to know how much it sucks not to be able to put pressure on my fingers without pain. I wonder how long that particular effect will last. Due to the lack of timeframe, I can only guess. Months, maybe. Years, I doubt it, but possibly.
"Subject's cranial and facial structure will experience long-term reformation. The effect this will have on brain function is unknown.
And here we get into "you signed a waiver" territory. I had accepted at the outset that death was a possibility, but I'm not sure how to feel about the risk of permanent brain damage. None of the other accounts of therian HRT I've heard seem to mention this, though, so maybe it's just speculation? I move on to the next heading.
DIET
"Tigers, like all felines, are obligate carnivores. Subject will be required to eat real meat (no substitutions) at every meal, or risk symptoms of starvation."
This had already occurred to me, to be honest. Part of the reason a white tiger is my fursona in the first place is because I am an unrepentant meat enjoyer. Heck, maybe a feline body will make meat taste even better.
"Lingering human characteristics may make it possible to digest other food, but the nutritional benefit to subject will be negligible."
…Ah. This was less expected. Does this mean I'll have to start thinking of things like bread and fruit as basically candy? Worse, will I have to avoid it? I love me a good grilled cheese, and poutine is basically an addictive substance, am I going to have to swear off some of my longtime favourites? Out of all of the effects so far, this is the one to give me the most hesitation. Yes, I love food, I'm not afraid to admit it.
"Subject is likely to lose cravings for non-meat food entirely."
I have to sit back and process this one. Back when I started human HRT, one of the things that gave me pause was the idea of decreased libido. That was one of the few things about my body that didn't make me dysphoric, unlike a lot of trans people whose stories I'd read. In the first few months, though, I found it settled into a pleasant sort of medium, where I could have it if I wanted, but it wouldn't show up out of nowhere. Maybe this will be the same way? Maybe poutine can still be a sometimes food? Cats eat weird stuff that's not healthy for them sometimes, but it's fine, right?
Some part of me considers holding a funeral for the abstract concept of poutine.
On to the final heading…
SENSORY EFFECTS
"Subject will gain heightened night vision and hearing. This will cause sleep to become significantly more difficult."
Trust a doctor to find the one downside to one of the coolest effects of the treatment… Do you even know how much I want to hear every beat of the world around me? Do you even understand how useful it would be to be able to see in the dark effortlessly? Having a tiger's eyes and ears would be almost worth every single downside by itself.
Besides, I'm a very heavy sleeper.
"Subject's hearing frequency range will become significantly more broad than a human's. High-pitched noises such as dog whistles will be audible and painful."
Well, I'm sure that's going to suck sometimes, but I don't think I'm exposed to such noises on the regular. Although… I suppose I wouldn't know, with my feeble human frequency range. It's something that might be fine or might suck, I guess.
"Subject's sense of touch will be strongly affected by fur growth."
Sure, that tracks, but I'm kind of looking forward to it. Maybe it's comparable to wearing a full-body fursuit? I've actually missed having opportunities to fullsuit, and I've thought about commissioning a new one if I saved up enough money, but I suppose that won't be necessary now.
Much of the rest of the document is a reminder that everything listed is Permanent and Irreversible short of Major Surgery, with some reminders of the various rights to litigate that I've waived. Ultimately, it sounds like I've got some big changes ahead, but nothing I've seen here is a dealbreaker.
It's slightly terrifying, but I'm excited.
I can't wait to hear the rain through a tiger's ears.

how much should the average Gallifreyan be eating and drinking water? if they ate like the average human, would it have adverse effects? are there any nutrients Gallifreyans need that humans don't, or vice versa?
What does a Gallifreyan diet look like?
🌮Nutritional Requirements
Gallifreyans require a balanced diet much like humans, consisting of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and minerals. However, their advanced biology allows them to extract nutrients more efficiently.
🍕Nutrition: An adult Gallifreyan needs roughly the same amount of calories as a human (around 2000ish), but they process food so efficiently that one good meal a day is normal, so they appear to eat less.
💧Hydration: Due to their highly efficient kidneys, they need less water. Around two litres of water every day will keep them nicely hydrated.
⚠️Limits: They can go without any food for up to two weeks and up to five days without water before showing symptoms of starvation and dehydration, though they will get increasingly, err, tetchy.
👽Gallifreyan vs. Human Diet
If a Gallifreyan ate like the average human, it wouldn't be catastrophic, but there may be noticeable effects:
🍔Over-nutrition: Given their efficiency in nutrient extraction, consuming the same amount as humans would likely lead to excessive intake, resulting in unwanted weight gain. Their bodies simply don't need as much food to get the same nutrients.
🥤Hydration Overload: Drinking the recommended 2-3 litres of water daily might lead to more frequent urination and unnecessary stress on their kidneys.
🧇Cholesterol and Fats: Gallifreyans can metabolise fats without the negative effects humans face. However, an abundance of unhealthy fats could still challenge their otherwise efficient system over time.
🍫Special Nutritional Requirements
Good news for all the intergalactic nutritionists out there-Gallifreyans and humans have very similar nutritional needs. There are no specific nutrients unique to either species' requirements. However, there are some considerations:
🥛Low Sodium: Their kidneys are excellent at filtering, but a low-sodium diet helps prevent any unnecessary strain.
🍌High Protein and Enzymes: Due to their active metabolism and physical demands, Gallifreyans benefit from higher protein intake and foods rich in enzymes to support their robust bodily functions.
🥬Nutrient Imbalances: Certain foods, especially those rich in Vitamin K (like kale and spinach) and gingerol (found in ginger), could cause issues. Vitamin K can affect their blood chemistry, while gingerol will enhance the effects of other substances, making alcohol, for instance, much more potent.
🌟Special Conditions: In cases of illness or certain medical conditions, Gallifreyans might need to consume specific substances to correct nutrient deficiencies. This might include particular proteins or compounds not commonly found in a regular human diet.
🏫 So ...
So while Gallifreyans can survive on a human diet, their advanced physiology allows them to thrive on less frequent, nutrient-dense meals. So, if you're planning a Gallifreyan dinner party, think high-protein, low-sodium, and for Rassilon's sake, hide that ginger beer.

Cannabis: A Multifaceted Plant for a Multitude of Uses
Tumblr media
Introduction
Cannabis, a plant that has been a part of human history for thousands of years, is experiencing a resurgence in popularity as its myriad of uses become increasingly recognised. From its strong fibres used in textiles and paper to its nutritional and medicinal properties, cannabis has proven itself to be a truly multipurpose plant. This article will delve into the various aspects of this versatile plant and explore how it has been utilised throughout history and across cultures.
The History of Hemp: A Material with Unmatched Strength
One of the most well-known uses of cannabis is in the production of hemp, a material derived from the plant's strong fibres. These fibres have been used for millennia to create durable cloth, rope, and paper. The Vikings, known for their seafaring prowess, utilised hemp to construct sails for their ships, enabling them to voyage from Scandinavia to Nova Scotia. In the United States, Betsy Ross sewed the first flag from hempen cloth, and the Declaration of Independence was written on hemp paper. Even the now obsolete German currency, Deutsche Mark, were once printed on hemp paper.
The use of hemp extended beyond these applications, as seen in the Netherlands, where windmills were built specifically to crush hemp stalks. This demonstrates the importance of hemp in various industries and highlights the plant's incredible versatility.
Tumblr media
Cannabis as a Nutritional Powerhouse
While the strength of its fibres may have initially attracted humans to the cannabis plant, its potential as a food source likely played a significant role in its widespread cultivation. Cannabis seeds, or hempseeds, are packed with essential nutrients such as polyunsaturated fats, essential fatty acids, and proteins. These qualities qualify hempseed as a functional food, meaning it provides health benefits beyond basic nutrition.
For over three thousand years, Asian cultures have utilised hempseed as both a food and a medicine. Despite the prohibition of cannabis products in the United States, hempseed has been allowed for use in food over the last two decades. This highlights the recognition of its nutritional value and potential health benefits.
Tumblr media
Cannabis Resin: A Source of Medicinal and Psychoactive Compounds
The resin produced by the cannabis plant is another aspect that has garnered significant attention due to its medicinal and psychoactive properties. The compounds found in cannabis resin, such as THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol), have been the focus of breeding efforts to increase their production. These efforts have led to the development of various cannabis drug chemotypes around the world, with some cultivars producing only THC, others producing both THC and CBD, and a few expressing propyl THCV (tetrahydrocannabivarin) and/or CBDV (cannabidivarin).
The medicinal uses of cannabis resin have been widely researched, with evidence suggesting its effectiveness in treating conditions such as chronic pain, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, and more. The psychoactive effects of THC have also led to the recreational use of cannabis, which has sparked debates surrounding its legalisation and regulation.
Tumblr media
Environmental Benefits of Cannabis Cultivation
In addition to its myriad uses, cannabis cultivation offers several environmental benefits. Hemp plants are known to absorb large amounts of carbon dioxide, making them an effective tool in combating climate change. Furthermore, hemp requires fewer pesticides and herbicides than many other crops, reducing the environmental impact of agriculture.
Cannabis can also be used as a source of biofuel, offering a renewable and eco-friendly alternative to fossil fuels. Additionally, the fast growth rate and low water requirements of hemp make it a sustainable crop, capable of providing resources without causing significant strain on natural resources.
Conclusion
Cannabis is a truly remarkable plant, with applications ranging from textiles and paper to nutrition and medicine. As society continues to recognise its numerous benefits, it is likely that the cultivation and use of cannabis will only continue to grow. By embracing this versatile plant, we can harness its potential to improve our health, industries, and environment for generations to come.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT LOSING WEIGHT FAST ( PART1)
Once you've decided to begin a weight reduction journey, it's quite simple to become impatient since you want to see results as soon as possible, reach your goals, and reduce your weight as quickly as possible. Numerous diet and exercise plans claim to be the fastest method to lose weight, but how realistic, successful, and—above all—healthy is swift weight loss?
Is fast weight loss healthy?
It's crucial to remember that each person is unique and that what suits one person may not be suitable for another. Everyone has distinct bodies, objectives, and procedures. Similar to this, a healthy strategy for one person may not be the same for another. For example, a heavier individual carrying more fat may anticipate losing weight faster than someone merely looking to shed a few pounds.
The strategies you choose and the speed at which you lose weight will often determine how healthy your weight reduction is. Your weight loss is probably good if you're maintaining a reasonable calorie intake, making sure your diet is balanced, and engaging in strenuous exercise without wearing yourself or your body out. On the other hand, if you're drastically cutting calories below what's advised, you may be losing weight fast but not in a healthy method that could be harmful to your body.
What are the risks of losing weight too fast?
Losing weight too fast can carry some risks, such as:
Unsustainability
It can be quite challenging to maintain a rigorous diet and exercise routine over time while trying to reduce weight quickly. It's more of a temporary solution than a lifestyle shift. For instance, crash diets can be incredibly unsustainable and put you at risk of gaining back the weight you lost after you resume your normal eating routine.
Electrolyte imbalance
This occurs when the electrolyte balance in your diet is off (sodium, potassium, chloride, magnesium, and phosphate, for example). These are essential elements that support many crucial functions of your body, including the immune system, blood sugar, blood pressure, bone health, digestion, and the functions of your muscles and nerves. Although variations in electrolyte levels are normal, tampering with the balance your body needs to function regularly may cause problems like cramps, fever, dyspnea, exhaustion, disorientation, migraines, irregular heartbeats, and convulsions.
Malnutrition
Similar to electrolytes, a diet rich in nutrients provides your body with all the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients it needs to stay happy, healthy, and fit. You may be experiencing the symptoms of deficiencies and missing out on important nutritional benefits if you severely restrict your diet. Cutting carbs, for instance, can indicate a lack of fiber, which can cause nausea, constipation, or blood sugar swings; eliminating dairy entirely from your diet can indicate a calcium shortage, which can cause brittle bones or even osteoporosis. To ensure that your body gets the energy and minerals it needs to thrive, it's important to carefully analyze any dietary changes and look for substitutes.
Decreased muscle mass
The body may occasionally turn to muscle mass as a source of fuel when you lose weight too quickly. Therefore, you're actually losing essential muscle mass even though you're theoretically lowering the number on the scale. Not only is muscle necessary to maintain your body's optimal movement and tone, but it also burns calories faster than fat due to its higher metabolic activity.
Fatigue
Fatigue and exhaustion can result from depriving your body of the nutritious energy it requires, especially when combined with vigorous exercise. It could be difficult for you to get through the workday without becoming overly exhausted. Your body may have irregular and undesirable cravings for high-calorie foods or be less likely to work out when it is tired.
Low mood or irritability
Exercise has a terrific mood-boosting effect, but if you're too tired from pushing yourself in the gym and aren't eating enough to keep your energy levels up, you could find yourself feeling even more stressed, irritable, or angry. Low emotions might result from hunger and fatigue, which can make it difficult to concentrate or stay motivated.
Not only that but there are other dangers associated with losing weight quickly. These could be:
Headaches
Dizziness
Hair loss
Menstrual irregularities
Can rapid weight loss be good for you?
But is drastically cutting weight the only unhealthy way to go? Can it contribute positively to a journey toward well-being? In actuality, it truly depends on your body type and health objectives, although it might be. Some people lose weight more quickly than others because they have metabolisms that are significantly faster than average. When starting out on a healthy diet and exercise regimen, people frequently see faster initial weight loss (typically in the first few weeks) as their bodies acclimate to the new habits and shed water weight. Once these modifications become a more regular part of their routine, this normally slows down to a more regular pace of loss.
Unless you don't need to lose weight or are losing weight because of your health, losing weight shouldn't always happen quickly. What can be unhealthy is the method by which you lose weight. It's crucial to eat a balanced, healthful diet that gives your body the nourishment, fuel, and energy it needs to operate properly while concentrating on weight loss. If you combine this with a well-planned exercise regimen, you should be able to lose weight healthily. It could be worthwhile to consult a nutritionist or your general practitioner if you're worried that you're losing weight too quickly to make sure you're doing it the right way.

One of the most significant lessons I’ve learned is the importance of maintaining muscle mass, which is one of the factors of longevity. This isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about overall health and quality of life!
Dr. Gabrielle Lyon, a leading expert in the field of muscle-centric medicine, emphasizes that muscle is the organ of longevity. It plays a critical role in metabolic health, immune function, and even brain health. As we age, muscle mass naturally declines, which can lead to increased fat gain, and reduced strength.
To counteract this, adequate protein intake and consistent resistance training are crucial. According to Dr. Lyon, most adults need at least 1 gram of protein per pound of ideal body weight daily to support muscle health. This ensures that our bodies have the necessary building blocks to repair and build muscle tissue.
Resistance training, on the other hand, is essential for stimulating muscle growth and strength. It’s not just about lifting weights; it’s about challenging your muscles in a way that promotes growth and resilience. Even just 2-3 sessions per week can make a significant difference.
I’ve personally noticed and reaped these benefits. At 41 and in perimenopause, prioritizing protein and resistance training has helped me feel stronger, more energized, and better equipped to handle the changes that come with aging.
It’s never too late to start, and the benefits are truly life-changing. 💪🏽

The word “fasting” is defined as abstaining from food, sometimes as a religious discipline. Many religions practice fasting as a way of demonstrating faith and spiritual reflection.
Some people fast as a way to lose weight or to cleanse the body of toxins. Fasting is used in many different ways for weight loss depending on the diet. Some diets involve eating only whole foods while others restrict food all together. Each fasting diet has its own restrictions on liquids too.
Benefits
Fasting is great for a myriad of reasons especially health and spiritual reasons. Fasting gives the stomach a much needed time to rest, at least for the modest and health-conscious eater (raw foodist, vegan-vegetarian); but for the average over-eater of the Standard American Diet, fasting does not give the stomach time to rest but allows it to attempt to digest all the undigested food that it is holding.
Fasting allows the colon or intestinal tract to dump or release much of the stored waste, helping to prevent colon and rectal cancers. When we fast, it allows for the colon to shrink back into shape. When the colon shrinks back into shape, one of the results is a suppressed appetite.
But the more we eat unhealthy foods, the more our bodies crave it in attempt to get nutrition. We should eat for nutritional purposes but most of us eat for eye or sight appeal, smell, and taste appeal. Taste, sight and smell are not the criterion for what is healthy.
Fasting is also a great way to cleanse the eliminative channels of the body (colon, liver, lungs and kidneys).
It is an excellent way to cleanse the blood and lymphatic fluids. The toxins and pollutants in the bloodstream travel to the brain via the Jugular vein in the neck and because the blood can penetrate the blood-brain barrier, toxins and pollutants also enter the brain and negatively affect it. The brain actually becomes use to the polluted blood in the body and when you fast and the blood starts to thin, the brain responds due to its addiction to or habit of receiving polluted blood.
Basically, when the blood starts thinning and cleansing, the poisons, pollutants and toxins are being released via the filtering organs and to the body it feels like withdrawal and that’s why some people experience headaches while fasting.
Anti-Aging
Fasting helps begin the healing and anti-aging process. Fasting helps to improve the skin by cleansing the blood.
Fasting is very beneficial in warding off negative things and acts because if fasting compels you to abstain from that which is beneficial, good, and required, it makes it that much easier to abstain from that which is no good or detrimental, to the mind, body and soul.
Fasting is one of the ways we can detoxify and cleanse our bodies.
Juice Feasting
Juice feasting is when a person fasts or abstains from solid food and consumes vegetable and/or fruit juice (in addition to water).
Juice feasting, though not a fast, is beneficial when you consider the beneficial properties of fruits and vegetables. Fruits are very cleansing and vegetables are very building due to their high nutritional/mineral content.
Juice feasting can and will greatly help the body cleanse, rebuild and heal.
If hunger is a problem while fasting, juice feasting can be ideal alternative for you. It gives your body much needed energy from the electrical components contained in fruits and vegetables. The natural sugar in fruits will also give the body a boost as fruit sugar (fructose) converts into secondary natural fuel for the body.
Water
The best or ideal waters to drink during a fast are distilled water and alkaline water. Distilled water is great for fasting purposes because distilled water removes heavy metal toxins from the body. Distilled water is basically boiled water. Consumption of distilled is an important function while fasting because heavy metal buildup may lead to heavy metal poisoning, impairing human health.
Alkaline water is processed water, usually charged with electrolytes (alkaline minerals). Whereas distilled water will draw out heavy metal toxins from the body by attraction, alkaline water will cause the tissues to dump off toxins and if the alkaline water is also microclustered, it will also cause the cells to dump off toxins.
Microclustered water is water that has been electrically processed allowing it to break down water molecules and make the water more penetrable so molecules can penetrate the cells and not only hydrate the body, but stimulate cleansing on a cellular level. Nature automatically microclusters water with waterfalls. The water hitting hard against rocks automatically breaks down the water molecules making them smaller and thus more penetrable through the cells of the body.
Crystal water is excellent during a fast. The best crystals to add to your drinking water during a fast are:
Clear Quartz: increases and enhances energy and the body’s energy fieldBloodstone: purifies and heals bloodMalachite (tumbled): Cleanses the blood and the liver; heals female organsBlue Jasper: sustains energy while fasting; heals degenerative diseasesMuscovite: prevents hunger while fastingAmethyst: enhances and heightens spiritual awareness; cleanses the bloodRose Quartz: amplifies the love frequency; fine tunes the heart chakraHerkimer Quartz: protects against radiation poisoningRutilated Quartz: absorbs mercury poisoning; prevents psychic attackBlack Tourmaline: prevents psychic attacks; repels negative energy
Taking elixirs are very ideal when fasting because elixirs are water imbued with crystal properties, which facilitates meditation, angelic contact, spiritual awareness, and energy healing on the subtle body level.
How to Fast
You should only be fasting when you have the time to properly fast, like on weekends and holidays or during your job-given vacation. Hard work should be avoided when fasting. During a fast, the body usually becomes weak or faint before energy levels increase and you feel more energetic.
Fasting and detoxifying (with herbs) are great ways to increase and enhance energy levels in the body.
If you decide to drink tea, herbal tea, while fasting (as many people do) drink a tea that contains natural caffeine (bio-active caffeine). Herbs that naturally contain caffeine include:
Green TeaBlack TeaKola NutGuarana, andYerba Mate
Herbs that can provide much needed energy are:
GinsengEphedraCodonopsisMaca MacaSumaGingko BilobaGotu Kola
If you are fasting to purify your mind for better memory recall, cognition, and mental clarity for the test, drink herbal tea of Holy Thistle.
If you want to enhance your cleansing effect during a fast, drink herbal teas of Burdock Root, Dandelion Root, Cleavers, Chickweed, Echinacea and/or Godenseal. Wheat and Barley Grass are also great for this.
If you want to eliminate excess mucus in the body while fasting, drink herbal teas of Mullein Leaf, Boneset, Coltsfoot, Yerba Sante, Comfrey Root, and/or Fenugreek.
If you are a female and want to cleanse your reproductive organs during fasting, drink herbal teas of White Oak Bark, Red Clover Leaf, Red Raspberry Leaf, Sarsaparilla, Squawvine, and/or Dong Quai.
To help eliminate calculi while fasting, drink herbal tea of Chanca Piedra, the best natural herb to naturally break or bust up stones or calculi and remove them from the body. Chanca Piedra is a powerful Rainforest herb whose name means to break stone.
Deep tissue massage is an ideal massage to get while detoxifying. This particular massage’s deep penetrating strokes greatly helps to cleanse the tissues of the body. Lymphatic Drain massage is also an ideal massage to get while fasting as this massage helps to stimulate cleansing and movement of the lymph fluids.
Yoga and/or deep breathing are great during a fast. Deep breathing helps cleanse the organs, move stagnant chi, prana or energy; and also fuels the body and mind.
Chakra balancing or alignment is a must during a fast. This procedure greatly helps to open the energy centers (vortices) and also cleanses and enhances the energy field. Ear coning is great to do as well while fasting. Ear coning helps to remove subtle blocks from the ears and also opens the energy centers (aura) of the ears. This activity along with removing wax buildup and bacteria is great for the ears while fasting as is most beneficial.
Nasal cleansing (with the use of a Neti Pot) is great while fasting. Nasal cleansing helps to open blocked respiratory passages via the nostrils of the nose and thus helps to improve breathing.
Magical Alchemical Elixirs (which contain herbs, crystals, humic and fulvic acid, essential oils and programmed intent), which help to heal and cleanse on all eight subtle body levels.
Crystal Spray Elixirs (which contain blessed water, crystal and gemstone properties, flower essences and essential oils), which facilitate cleansing of the aura (energy field). Crystal-Gemstone Elixirs (over 35 kinds), which work on a subtle body and energy level.
Ending a Fast
A fast should always be broken in the morning. This is where the term breakfast comes from. The word breakfast means to break the fast. Breakfast is in the morning because it starts the new day for us. A fast should be broken at sunrise (or sunset). However, sunrise is best as the stomach needs to rest at night.
A fast should always be broken with liquids, preferably soft, pureed fruit juice or vegetable juice. After digesting a liquid (fruit or vegetable juice), a smoothie would be ideal. After a smoothie, raw, organic fruit should be next. After raw, organic fruit, soup would be ideal. After soup, a green salad or some other raw food dish would be ideal. After salad and/or raw food dish, legumes (beans, peas, etc.) would be ideal. After legumes, soft whole grains would be ideal (but not a lot as they expand in the colon). After grains, a vegetarian enter would be ideal. If you eat meat, white meat, would be ideal (i.e. chicken, tuna/fish, turkey) to eat.
Please remember that while fasting, the stomach shrinks.
Fasting is a science, and proper knowledge is needed.

Understanding FDA Guidance on Protein Claims: Demystifying "Excellent Source" and "Good Source"
Welcome to fitscientist! I'm a food scientist irl and I see a lot of misconceptions about packaging claims out there - I'm trying to be more active on my tumblr (instead of just reblogging/queuing pretty pictures - which obviously I will continue to do!!) and I'd like to share my expertise with you all so we're all more knowledgeable about food labeling, packaging, and more - especially as we are all on our fitness journies together :) The more you know!
Today, let's dive into the fascinating world of FDA guidance for protein claims. Yeah yeah, we all know protein is good for you, but when you look at a food label, do you really know what you're getting?
We often come across terms like "excellent source of protein" and "good source of protein" on food labels, but what do these claims really mean? Let's break it down:
1. Excellent Source of Protein: - According to the FDA, a food product can be labeled as an "excellent source of protein" if it provides 20% or more of the Daily Value (DV) for protein per serving. This means that consuming a serving of such a product can significantly contribute to meeting your protein needs for the day.
2. Good Source of Protein: - A food product can be labeled as a "good source of protein" if it provides 10-19% of the DV for protein per serving. While not as high as an excellent source, choosing foods labeled as good sources of protein can still contribute to your daily protein requirements.
It's important to note that these claims are based on the protein content per serving of the food product. Different products may have varying serving sizes, so it's crucial to check the serving size stated on the nutrition facts panel to accurately gauge the protein content you'll be consuming.
3. Daily Value (DV): - The DV is a standard reference set by the FDA, representing the recommended daily intake of a nutrient, including protein, based on a 2,000-calorie diet. For protein, the DV is set at 50 grams per day, which can vary depending on individual needs.
4. Consider Your Individual Needs: - It's important to remember that individual protein needs may differ based on factors like age, sex, activity level, and overall health. While these claims can help guide your choices, it's essential to assess your personal protein requirements in consultation with a healthcare professional or registered dietitian.
5. Protein Quality Matters: - While the FDA guidance focuses on the quantity of protein, it's equally important to consider the quality of the protein you consume. Complete proteins are those that contain all essential amino acids required for muscle repair and growth. Look for sources like lean meats, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy, and plant-based complete proteins like quinoa and soy.
Remember, protein is a vital macronutrient necessary for several bodily functions, including muscle repair, satiety, and hormone regulation.
