As he gazes into @lucentsin captivating eyes, he's struck by their beauty, as if she were a celestial temptress sent to ease all his troubles. With tender reverence, he lifts her hand to his lips, pressing a gentle kiss to the delicate skin before closing his eyes. Lowering his head, he rests it against her hand, his thorn-pierced hand resting atop hers, as if seeking solace and sanctuary in her touch. "I'm a damn mess, Roxi…" Harvey mutters to himself, his gaze flickering over the dirty floors, a reflection of the turmoil within. He feels like a man steeped in sin, as if the devil himself might come knocking at any moment. With a heavy sigh, he shakes his head, fighting to keep the tears at bay, unwilling to let Roxi see the depths of his inner chaos.

you know what. the fact that odin has to go into the odinsleep (effectively a coma in which he - and all of asgard - is incredibly vulnerable) at regular internals all throughout thor and loki's childhood is a really underappreciated bit of backstory!

like... thor and loki have effectively grown up with a chronically (well. episodically, but consistently) ill parent. that's going to have a profound effect on them. it's not something i've experienced myself, so i'm just guessing, really, but some thoughts on what those effects might be...?

a sense of extreme instability in their attachment to odin, especially when they're very young. no wonder they both have abandonment issues!

before they're old enough to understand, they're going to experience it as: father is here but he is refusing to engage with us, and no-one is sure when he will again. have i done something wrong? am i just not important enough? this might be exacerbated by people trying to tell them that it's "meant to happen", "for a higher purpose", "under control", etc.

once they ARE old enough to understand, they will naturally see it as very dangerous and frightening. their father is the universe's miraculous, invulnerable protector... until he isn't. what if it comes on unexpectedly, somewhere dangerous, somewhere no-one can find him? what if a war breaks out? what if he never wakes up?

the odinsleep is linked to odin's powers and odin's responsibilities to the kingdom. he exerts himself until he falls into a coma. For Them. it's a kind of martyrdom, and it must induce a lot of survivor's guilt in his family.

there's a lot of cognitive dissonance around vulnerability, especially odin's vulnerability. the royal family must always present a strong and united front to the world, and questioning or undermining odin, even in private, can have severe repercussions. and yet odin regularly enters health crises that they can't not respond to. yet more unprocessed and uncommunicated emotions in the house of odin.

the odinsleep seems to be the brink of death, so in a way, odin dies over and over - and his family brace themselves for grief over and over. it must make it harder to admit any flaw in him, much less the vast extent of his abuse, when they're constantly reminded of what the loss would be like.

but at the same time... there might be some peace in his absence. relief at the withdrawal of a tyrant. which will only cause further guilt and anxiety in them all, and maybe lead to them policing each other harder to compensate...

every time odin goes into the odinsleep, someone else has to rule. at first, this will be frigga - which means, when they were young, thor and loki would lose most of their contact with both parents at regular intervals. which might contribute to their closeness with each other, as the only stable connection. and later on, it would probably mean thor had to be regent (to the realm at its most vulnerable!) - so he would lose a parent figure and very suddenly have to grow up (and possibly leave loki behind)...

it's not 100% clear... but it seems likely that the odinsleep is something the next king will eventually inherit. thor's future promises untold power and untold sacrifice, and always has. a king is powerful, and a king is exposed. this complicates thor and loki's power struggle in a really interesting way! it's not just: let me be in charge. it's also: let me take the danger, i know how to handle it better than you...

hmmm. there is probably much more to be said here but these are. some initial thoughts

i'm so ambivalent about frigga! on one had i think the MCU treated her very poorly and so fandom should build her up and give her some more 'oomph,' on the other hand what fandom has done with her also annoys me because it apparently decided she's the good parent to be contrasted with her husband even when they did the exact same things.

so i always have the urge to "support" her by making her problematic in one way or another. and strange. she deserves to be strange.

Torunn has frequent recurring nightmares, which mainly consist on her past trauma and one of her most recurring nightmare is the death of her grandmother, as she had been there to witness it. It’s actually one of the main reasons she hates going to sleep, for she knows there’s a high chance her mind will replay it.

ALSO. particularly given its proximity to the scene with loki and frigga. i think it's fair to say that fandral and volstagg's exchange in the weapons vault - "it's as if they resent being imprisoned!" / "there's no pleasing some creatures!" - is directly satirising asgard's (especially the royal family's) attitude to loki.

why isn't loki grateful that asgard took him prisoner rather than killing him, not once but twice? they're being merciful. they put a roof over his head and food on his table. they gave him books and a chair in solitary confinement. he'd be dead if not for them, and he still has the gall to complain of mistreatment, just because they "hurt his feelings" and "lied to him his entire life" and "are technically torturing him even now"? ungrateful little brat. but what else can you expect from a jotun

A Self-Indulgent Scene from a Fic That Will Probably Never Be Written.

MCU!Loki and Sigyn marrying.

Inspiration was taken from here. The idea was inspired by learning that comics!Loki despised Sigyn in at least a few issues, as well as watching Loki (spoilers in the tags but not the actual scene).

Sigyn had always imagined her wedding to take place among her neighbors and friends. As she accepted her groom's ancestral sword, she glanced out at the hundreds witnessing the act. Among them, her grandfather's face was the only one she knew.

The sword she presented the prince of Asgard was less ornate than the one she received but equal in quality. Her grandfather's thousands of years of mastery was evident in its blade, and the snake engraved in the leather wrapping its hilt had been carefully etched by herself after he had told her of her betrothal to the Snake Prince of Asgard.

Servants in finer clothes than she had ever dreamed of wearing placed the wedding bands on the hilts of their swords to be exchanged. As Loki took his ring, she warmed her smile with her silent wish that their marriage become a friendship. His own smile faltered. As their eyes met, his expression became colder than the deserts of Jotenheim. Though the moment was brief, it left her with a lingering sense of dread.

The prince thrust his sword into the soft dirt between them. He wrapped his hand on its hilt and looked at her expectantly. She hesitated. She was tempted to flee before their vows bound them eternally, but to do so would be a grave insult against the prince and, by extension, King Odin himself. She wrapped her hand around the hilt, her fingers accidentally brushing against Loki's. The strange cold of his skin only intensified her worry that she had not married a man but a monster.

♔King: Theodore Magnus-Monroe - he isn't involved in the story much, is the money behind the queen, but is undoubtedly an important member of the community.

♕Queen: Sapphire Thorneheart- she is a powerhouse, highly influential, and sort of terrifying. She's well-known and respected, but she will not hesitate to defend her territory.

♖Rook: Razi Wood- A reliable person who sees the world in a straightforward way.

♘Knight: Rosalind Bloodswell- The wild card, they see the world through a unique lens and makes unexpected moves.

♗Bishop: Marcus Magnus-Monroe- Easy to overlook and forget but you definitely shouldn't because he will end the game if you let him.

♙Pawn: Frigga Thorneheart- This was the last character I'd decided on, and it might be unexpected, but Frigga is a people pleaser and at the whims of her queen. She takes small steps, and because of that people are quick to disregard her, but once she get to the end of her rope, she will grow and change into something formidable.

Right I'm not saying Odin's not had a terrible amount of colonialism and war going on over his however-long-it's-been reign but when Thor wants to lay waste to Jotunheim and Odin tells him off for this it's not just hypocrisy at work, because the Odin of the timeframe of that movie seems sure that this would be Wrong not just politically bothersome and yet he also doesn't really explain to Thor why things are different now and putting that together what you have is this: Odin can't explain his own apparent change of heart without revealing that "oh yeah your brother's a Jotun," even though he must be fairly sure that this information would stop Thor's xenophobic bloodlust in its tracks as effectively as it did his own.

the first fight in the vault is actually so fascinating like... odin is so COLD here. he starts out sounding exactly like the wise, weary, benevolent mentor he wants us to think he is - "they have paid. with their lives" - but as the argument goes on he grows more and more distant from it. he's throwing out reasoning to counter everything thor says, but they're not entirely satisfying arguments - too automatic, too easy - and i think that's at least partly because odin's first concern is not the argument itself.* it's that he's observing thor in a true crisis, perhaps for the first time, and he doesn't like what he sees.

when odin shuts thor down decisively - in a way that thor seems not to have realised he still could - odin has this faint smile and this note of satisfaction in his voice. spite, even. and even though what odin has been arguing for really is morally better, there's still something about this moment that feels... just a little bit sinister. the first real glimpse of the tyrant showing through.

*another factor to this, imo, is that odin isn't being honest about why jotunheim isn't a real threat. admitting how severely he devastated their world would make him look bad. but we - and thor! - still sense that there is something missing from odin's dialogue, that odin knows more than he's telling us here. odin is speaking quietly, avoiding eye contact, and when thor voices his main question (why?) odin hesitates very noticeably before replying.
