𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐑 𝐋𝐀𝐔𝐆𝐇𝐄𝐃 𝐁𝐔𝐓 𝐍𝐎𝐃𝐃𝐄𝐃 . he was as unsurprised by her shock in the same way the winds were unsurprised by a bird on the wing . all too soon , he was with the norsemen again , revealing to them that he too breathed and bled and sweat . humans grew shocked at the most mundane things . very little changed about that .

❝ not quite your schools . our studies were vast , and most often times conducted by our parents . or an array of tutors in our youth . loki was often taught by our mother , frigga . and i by my father . ❞ he intended to leave it at that , even as memories of sneaking away from lectures or the occasional practical prank on their tutors and governesses lit aflame , clear as ever .

❝ in time , i'd met our friends . i believe i have spoken of them . volstagg , the vigilant , hogun the grim , fandral the dashing , and there was lady sif , my eldest of friends . ❞ he paused . then , nudged luna's shoulder . ❝ they supported me , as your friends shall support you . lean on them , young luna , and together you will accomplish most glorious deeds . ❞

Luna is all ears and says, "You have my word!" Thor knows that he can trust her with anything and everything! Especially with the ghost now doormat.

Seeing that mischief look has her smiling. Reminds her of Loki. They really are brothers.

"Mister Loki and you too get nervous?" It actually does come as a surprise. "How did you get through it in school? Did you just talk to everyone or...Maybe it wasn't school, but something else, huh?"

AND MAYBE HE WAS . but not all - knowing . his mother was said to be the wisest woman in all of asgard ( and maybe she was too . ) yet she had not seen loki's death coming . nor had she seen her own . if thor was the best and the worst of the both of them . . . . — HE WAS NOT WISE .

❝ and if the wise ruler is truly a tyrant , yet equally beloved ? ❞ the words swept past his lips before thor could truly pay them mind , but WITH HIS THOUGHTS SWIRLING , he didn't much care to heed them . he thought of hela , ODIN'S TRUE FIRSTBORN , and the destruction she had come to so crave . he thought of her FURY , and how he understood it well . he thought of loki , who died and HAD DIED in a gilded cage of lies ; whose remnant scoured midgard's city and brought about a turn of destruction once , then once more . he thought of himself , and stared down at his liquor . his reflection , with ONE EYE and GROWING HAIR stared back .

once , he had wanted to be just like his father . now he could barely stand the sight of himself , looking just like him .

thor laughed , but it was a sound most bitter . ❝ we call ourselves gods . indeed we may even have rhyme and a reason to prove it . for that we may well be beloved . ❞ he thought of his friends , who believed in him and died for it . he thought of his people , who had chosen him and had died for it . he thought of his family , who had loved him once and had all died for it . WHO NAMED THE GODS WORTHY ? IF EVER THEY TRULY WERE ?

Indeed, perhaps it was true that gods could also be human. Eons ago, Zhongli would have shaken his head, perhaps released a short, disbelieving laugh, and yet... perhaps in the end it was only he who had that lesson to learn.

This was certainly a rare side to his roommate, one that had perhaps been hinted at, from time to time, yet never so boldly out in the open-- a conversation that had swiftly turned quite serious, even existential.

A thoughtful tilt of his head, golden gaze flicking from the glistening liquid in his cup to where Thor sat...

"I suppose, in that case, one's definition of power must be taken into account," he mused. "How does one measure such things? The power of a wise ruler and the power of a tyrant, they may be equal in mere strength, yet one is loved, and the other hated and despised. A mere stone might divert a river's flow, and the greatest of storms may be helpless against the fortress of the mountains... and yet, there seems to be more to this than mere discussion of power. Something that lay beneath, the ever-present crackle beneath Thor's gilded surface, rising to brush the surface amid liquor's deluge.

Zhongli was not one for overindulgence-- but he had, indeed, seen it before.

Even the gods are susceptible to... loose lips.

He closed his eyes, raising his own cup to his lips. "Perhaps that may be so," he murmured. "But one does not walk across the universe for a thousand years and learns nothing. In truth, there is no small measure of wisdom that you as well might offer."

𝐒𝐇𝐄 𝐖𝐀𝐒 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐄𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐃 person he had shown asgard's remnants to . likely she had passed them by with hardly another thought to the aged spines . many did . for they were simply DUSTY OLD BOOKS fit within endless , ever - shifting shelves and long halls of knowledge . EASILY FORGOTTEN . even the archivists did not seem to understand their true worth . the aerconi mortals held onto them regardless — and the pages these very delicacies came from were written in ink far older than any mind might fathom .

how many generations had the recipe of sweet buns been passed on through ? how many family houses , joined together by the weave and the knot , collected wisdom enough to produce the tarts he so loved ?

lilith flocked to the printings of his people's knowledge like a bee flocked to wildflowers . she had been - and still was - none the wiser just the same . swallowing the dull ache of MELANCHOLY , thor plucked a small corner of pepperkaker from one of the side most plates instead of the inviting tart . he nibbled in small pieces , despite seeing with his own eyes she had well accounted for his usual appetite .

❝ you have done well , ❞ he conceded , nodding his head approvingly . ❝ know i do not say so lightly . . . . but i believe had my people the ability to speak on their own behalves , they would be gladdened by this valiant effort , as so to am i . ❞ simply by the smells , it seemed that she had paid special attention to the authenticity . the gingerbread tickled his throat with spices . haltingly , thor murmured — although it seemed the thunderer spoke half - way to himself . ❝ asgard is a people . ❞

Loki played the part well; Lilith appeared giddy and excited to Thor, who accepted her offerings with gladness and humility. Though she was quick to pull her hand back and hold it tightly to her chest, she hastily sat herself among the delights and treats.

All of the items were Asgardian make. Apples, berries, well-seasoned meats, and breads adorned numerous plates and bowls. Loki knew exactly which ones Thor would be the most drawn to and prepared them accordingly.

❝ The pleasure is mine, truly. ❞ Lilith smiles, gesturing for Thor to sit down close to her. ❝ I can only hope that I am able to live up to the standards of your home world. I did my best to produce your favorites. ❞

With a delicate hand, she reached towards the apple tarts. Quickly, she picked up the little treat, examining it closer. Warmth seemed to still be radiating off of them, as if they had been freshly brought out of the oven that created them.

❝ You will try one, won't you? ❞ Lilith asked quietly, innocence gleaming in her expression and awaiting the thunderer to partake. ❝ 'Tis not a true celebration if there is only one who participates. ❞ She laughs lightheartedly, taking a bite of her own creation.
