♟️Characters as Chess Pieces Game♟️

I'm making a new tag game, fellow writeblrs, and I'm going to tag a ton of people :P

Which of your characters would be each piece and why? You don't have to go by any kind of standardized symbolism if you don't want, it can just be vibes.

♔King: Theodore Magnus-Monroe - he isn't involved in the story much, is the money behind the queen, but is undoubtedly an important member of the community.

♕Queen: Sapphire Thorneheart- she is a powerhouse, highly influential, and sort of terrifying. She's well-known and respected, but she will not hesitate to defend her territory.

♖Rook: Razi Wood- A reliable person who sees the world in a straightforward way.

♘Knight: Rosalind Bloodswell- The wild card, they see the world through a unique lens and makes unexpected moves.

♗Bishop: Marcus Magnus-Monroe- Easy to overlook and forget but you definitely shouldn't because he will end the game if you let him.

♙Pawn: Frigga Thorneheart- This was the last character I'd decided on, and it might be unexpected, but Frigga is a people pleaser and at the whims of her queen. She takes small steps, and because of that people are quick to disregard her, but once she get to the end of her rope, she will grow and change into something formidable.

He looked away again as he twirled the flower in his fingers. “You know when we were talking last week, I told you about why I agreed to the engagement with Frigga?” “About the future? “Yeah, and I said that I’ve been trying to figure out what direction I wanted to go?” “Yes.” “And who I should do it with?” Rosalind stared at him, unsure what he was trying to say. Marcus turned back to them, took up Rosalind’s hand one more time in one hand, raised it to his lips, and kissed it. His own hands were trembling. Finally, he held out the camellia to them with his free hand and asked in the quietest voice they’d ever heard from him, “Will you marry me?” (Blood and Thorns, Chapter 17)

Alright, one more painting to go after this one and all 18 chapter paintings will be uploaded! It's really amazing to me that I finished such a huge project, each painting represents approximately 15-20 hours of work, more in some cases, and once the last chapter's is uploaded, I will have an update of the cover too! Maybe I'll have some fan art after that, we'll see, but my work ism going to be primarily focused on Blood and Thorns and its universe. But!! Maybe I'll do some drawings about the other characters or towns.

That itching discomfort from Magnus' magic only increased in its irritation as Desmond's wounds healed. Bar the wooziness accompanying his blood loss, he was right as rain... apart from the creeping blaze upon his nervous system. His eyes finally pinched shut, brow furrowed as he willed the rest of his body to remain still. Magnus didn't need him interrupting, and he knew that well enough.

But the feeling of Thaddeus bolting upright was probably the last thing he was fully aware of before the adrenaline fully left his body, allowing him to slip into a surprisingly restless state of unconsciousness. Because his mind was plagued with so many visions of the evening. Chance and the vampire. Monroe holding Cory all bloody and mangled. Marcus manipulating his blood bond with Chance in front of all of them. The gnashing of teath and tearing of flesh... his flesh. And the blood bond of his own that truly cemented his place amongst the most damned souls that still walked the earth. He'd condemned them all. And they would likely be taken. All because he thought he could keep his love a secret, his life a secret. What a foolish arse he'd made himself into. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. "I'm... sorry."

Thaddeus stared back into Desmond’s pain filled eyes. He could feel him fading. Could feel it with the slowing of his heart. Feel their broken, fraying bond continue to unravel. And he had a brief moment of contemplation. Would it be better for Desmond if he simply let him go? That thought brought out so much pain from his chest he almost cried out from it.

Desmond was in trouble. Whoever this enemy was. They had returned him in pieces. He’d never be safe. Thaddeus couldn’t protect him. His magic wasn’t built for that. He had powerful friends but could Thaddeus trust them to keep Desmond safe? Thaddeus didn’t trust anyone.

When Desmond’s features tightened, Thaddeus held his hand tighter. He almost turned to snarl at Magnus for whatever he was doing to cause it. But the fear of Desmond fading in that moment kept his eyes glued to the necromancer. “Shh.. “ He hushed him, stroking his blood stained cheek with his thumb.

More blue waves of power covered them. And Thaddeus didn’t understand why Magnus was projecting onto him too. But then he felt it. The rush of light pulsing through their bond. And it filled all the tears in it. Patching it back together again. Thaddeus surged to his feet as the bond pulled taut, completely whole again. He hadn’t known Magnus could do that.

Then, he watched as the physical wounds he could see on Desmond did the same thing. The power climbed up his body starting at his feet. And the slow, painful beat of Desmond’s heart started to beat steadily again. Thaddeus almost collapsed onto Desmond but stopped himself just before he fell. He hovered over Desmond. Just staring at him with shock and amazement.

Magnus did collapse, back into Thaddeus’ old easy chair. He covered his face with his hand and Thaddeus briefly considered moving to go check on him. But Desmond still had a hold of his hand. And he couldn’t have moved even if he’d wanted to.

I think I'm just going to answer these for my main four OCs going forward because I love talking about them and don't do that enough. They're all my favourite children and they all deserve love <3

My OC's greatest Triumph?

For Frigga I'd say learning how to accept her own desires instead of putting everyone else first. Overcoming people-pleasing is a hard thing to do and it was ruining her life.

Razi would say her greatest triumph was that night she managed three girls at once, but actually I think it's learning to take care of herself after her father passed as a teen. She was too young and so soft, and so her being able to get up and build a life for herself after that was a major accomplishment.

Rosalind has been through so much and I don't want to speak of too much about it as much is discussed about them in the Blood and thorns sequel, but I will say that finally allowing themself to be vulnerable with their friends, finding friends to feel safe with, is probably it for them.

Marcus Magnus-Monroe had a drinking problem. He's a sunny, golden retriever boy but he was a party boy back in the day and it got really bad when his mother passed two years prior to Blood and Thorns. This is definitely background information, you definitely see more of it in the sequel, but he's got a much better handle on it than he used to.

I'm gonna write a new scene for B&T, a book I THOUGHT was complete... chapter six is getting a refresh, but you know what? It'll be good to give Theodore and Marcus some time together because we only see that once near the end and it's not the easiest conversation. I have a side-fic with a bit of them talking, and we see more of them in the second one, but it'll be nice to inject some healthy parent-child relationship, just to show how fucked up Sapphire is. :)

Oh boy okay. I'll tell you about these guys - they're all short stories/side-fics from my main work Blood and Thorns. I guess you can think of these as pre-writing that I do to round out my understanding of my characters and their world and there have been times where these have made it into my larger works (I have one scene in Blood and Thorns that was a side-fic and I decided that it was too good not to put in: The library scene where Rosalind visits Marcus at the Magnus-Monroe estate for the first time). Eventually I'd like to publish more of my side stories on AO3 in the series, and I've published two of them so.... yeah! I've written over 300k words building these characters and this world up, almost 450k if you count the AU that will never see the light of day :) Of course, not all of it will make it online, but some of it definitely.

Humiliation is a Marcus-centred story about the one time Marcus lost his temper in public, and it's mentioned in the sequel of Blood and Thorns (Restructure), but I thought I'd flesh it out. It takes place about three years pre-Blood and Thorns. Basically he's falling for one of his many flings and is seriously considering settling down with him when said fling just roasts him to his friends, calls him a bottom and an idiot, etc etc.

Death is the story of Rosalind's initiation into their family's necromantic tradition that almost goes fatally wrong. I figured I should flesh that story out a bit as it's mentioned in Blood and Thorns and it has a lot to do with them becoming comfortable in their they/them-ness. This story takes place about seven years prior to Blood and Thorns. But this story hasn't got very far and I'm not sure if it'll ever get done.

Rosalie is a really sad one that illustrates the events following Marcus' mother's death from Rosalind's point of view. I've not made much progress on it but I wanted to flesh out what it was that necromancers do for their community and also how Rosalind's growing as an Heir of the coven. More than that, though, this was meant to be a small piece to fill out Victoria's character. She doesn't get a lot of screen time in either book and that's such a shame because she's an interesting lady and she honestly got the short end of the stick. Sorry Vic, I did you dirty ^^;

They slowed, and the world began to slowly fade back into place. The realization of what they were doing and all the reasons they shouldn’t be doing it rushed back into the forefront of their mind and Rosalind broke the kiss, though they didn’t retreat their hands. This was wrong, they reminded themself of all the reasons they hadn’t expressed their feelings for him for all those years, not least of which being that he was still fucking engaged to their coven’s future Heir. They shakily released his shirt collar, suddenly overcome with hesitation and doubt, but they didn’t remove their hand from his shoulder. (Blood and Thorns, Chapter 11)

This one is from one of my favourite chapters, and I've been sitting on this painting for a long time! Rosalind was an unexpected favourite of mine, and they're the reason I've started expanding my world from just a one-off book to a full-on series! Blood and Thorns has a sequel that I'm working on editing right now, and I have a third book planned that I'm going to start sometime in the next few months. Who knew that nonbinary witches with social anxiety would be such a heart-stealer? 🩷 (I did, I knew it the second I decided on their concept).

Chapter Preview:

Frigga stared in disbelief and Razi took a step forward, face contorted in anger. "Woah, Bloodswell, you don't have to be like that, you could-," "I could, yes," Rosalind cut Razi off and smiled grimly in amusement. "I'm not your on-demand necromancer, Frigga. You might be part of the leadership family, but I will not be at your beck and call like everyone else." They glanced at Razi. Who was about to snap at the implication when the door behind them swung open and Marcus Magnus-Monroe practically danced into the room holding two fresh mugs of coffee. "Oh, hey guys!" He exclaimed happily. The women whipped around to look at the man who was also a complete mess. He looked like he had just woken up and was in an oversized shirt that hung off one shoulder, his hair was unkempt and unstyled, and were those…? Rashes all over his neck? "Fancy meeting you here!" He waltzed up to Rosalind and planted a kiss on their cheek, setting down one of the mugs on the table for them.

Booksmart: Frigga is definitely the smartest, but Rosalind is a definite close second. Both of them will talk your ear off about niche magical theory and argue over minor details of the definition of "daemon" versus "demon" and whether or not one is more correct than the other (Frigga maintains they are the same, Rosalind asserts they're entirely different schools of entity and they'll prove it by writing a dissertation that nobody will read).

Streetsmart: Razi. By a mile my friends. You don't get to bed any cute girl with a slight interest in girls by being anything less than Charming. Now if only she could teach me her tricks, that'd be nice.

Peoplesmart: I maintain this is different to streetsmart, and I'm giving this one to Marcus Magnus-Monroe. I think most people underestimate him but he's the guy you talk to regarding anything inter-personal because he just "gets it". He a blond bimbo that'll read you like a book and call you out with a smile that'll make you thank him for it and I love him dearly.
