Fucking hell FIDE, what a way to end the year, with another fuckwitted decision that makes chess worse for everyone involved. A decision making body with less intelligence than two rocks taped together. A federation doing battle like a pigeon flying straight into a car window. An organisation with the ability to die on any hill so long as the hill is a pile of shit that smells bad. Gormless organisation. Completely without gorm.

You've lost your star player over a pair of jeans for chrissakes. Hurr durr you might say, Magnus Carlsen didn't follow the clothing rule, he should have been disqualified for round 9. The rule is stupid. And here's the great thing about being the body (FIDE) that comes up with stupid arbitrary rules - you can be the one to change them or apply them when necessary. And the rule was made (no jeans during the tournament) to make the players and therefore chess look smart, and by enforcing it in this way you look like complete lunatics.

You think Magnus is going to play in any more FIDE tournaments after this? Pull the other one. No chance now after the other shit you pulled this year, especially with the Freestyle chess tournaments. Bunch of knobheads.

I'm making a new tag game, fellow writeblrs, and I'm going to tag a ton of people :P

Which of your characters would be each piece and why? You don't have to go by any kind of standardized symbolism if you don't want, it can just be vibes.

♔King: Theodore Magnus-Monroe - he isn't involved in the story much, is the money behind the queen, but is undoubtedly an important member of the community.

♕Queen: Sapphire Thorneheart- she is a powerhouse, highly influential, and sort of terrifying. She's well-known and respected, but she will not hesitate to defend her territory.

♖Rook: Razi Wood- A reliable person who sees the world in a straightforward way.

♘Knight: Rosalind Bloodswell- The wild card, they see the world through a unique lens and makes unexpected moves.

♗Bishop: Marcus Magnus-Monroe- Easy to overlook and forget but you definitely shouldn't because he will end the game if you let him.

♙Pawn: Frigga Thorneheart- This was the last character I'd decided on, and it might be unexpected, but Frigga is a people pleaser and at the whims of her queen. She takes small steps, and because of that people are quick to disregard her, but once she get to the end of her rope, she will grow and change into something formidable.

forever thinking about royal’s bad ending. my thing with it is that maruki doesn’t necessarily give anyone what they want most, he gives them what’s most appropriate for them to want within a maruki-approved framework. iirc there’s a really interesting text sequence in the game where he just straight up changes someone’s career because they’re not “good” at it, regardless of whether that’s what they actually want. why struggle at all? ever? right?

and so ultimately i don’t think goro akechi’s greatest wish is necessarily ren. i think it’s a wish for sure, but his greatest wish is his own agency. despite any regrets he has and the fact that shido and yaldabaoth treated him like a pawn, he's generally pretty adamant about owning his choices and their consequences. he doesn't want that erased. and instead, you end up with pleasant boy™ if you take maruki’s deal. maybe maruki (incorrectly) thinks sanding off all of akechi’s rough edges will make him easier for ren to love. but the crux of it is really that maruki has to essentially lobotomize him to preserve the illusion of his perfect reality, because their ideologies are so diametrically opposed that akechi would spend every waking moment fighting back.

this isn’t to undermine ren’s importance to akechi btw — he explicitly acknowledges that he wishes they had met earlier, and there are countless moments throughout their confidant that underscore how much it means to him that they mirror each other so well. he absolutely does want more time with ren, just not under these circumstances.

and that’s also what makes ren’s choice on 2/2 doubly devastating. he knows that either way he loses akechi. and if he takes maruki’s deal, he loses him knowing that his last moments with the real akechi involved the two of them being unforgivably out of sync.

Honestly an incredible end. This round was special because it came off the back of seven straight draws. Gukesh as well made this an interesting round by fucking up his opening and then spending 1 hour and 17 seconds making his eleventh move, the longest think of his career. Ding was down an hour of time after 5 moves. Severe time pressure played a large role in the outcome of the match, but what an end it was.

IMAGINE THIS: Lil baby Damian, bored and being not quite old enough to start learning how to use proper weapons (curse these wooden ones, he wants true steel!) is wandering the base. This is not out of the ordinary, he’s the prince after all. What is out of the ordinary is that his shadow, his Akhi, is not here. 

Technically, he should be napping, but he woke up and neither his mother or his brother- who is quiet but gentle and isn’t a good speaker (mother said it was from a head injury)- is there. Which is how he finds his way to the Pit, which he’s not supposed to be at. Or at least not alone. 

But! His mother and Akhi are there! And- and Akhi is screaming and he’s never heard him scream like that, like he’s in agony- His eyes are green- they were blue, had, had Mother placed him in the Waters- 

And then the pool is bubbling- he should be running away, get assistance or something, he’s five, he shouldn’t be running towards it when everything is screaming to flee. But one moment he’s at the doorway, the next he’s clinging to his akhi as something writhes in the Pit, a mighty bellow echoing even as the Shadows take defensive positions. 

The water cascades, laps at their feet, splashes everywhere as a scaled form rises from the depths, wings like a bloodied sunset spreading as fur bursts into flames. Crimson eyes glare down at them all, pupils slits as they bare down at his Akhi. 

The creature- the dragon- dips its head down, its breath warm as it chuffs at his akhi, wings folding as though it is bowing. His akhi is clinging to Mother, shivering, several scars glowing as they fade and a burst of hair burned white. 

Oh. 

Oh.
