I'm still pretty new to chess, can anyone tell me what I'm supposed to do if my opponent plays the Eight Fucking Bears opening? I'm really having trouble.

Hey guys, my opponent just fused their entire side of the board into a gestalt entity, which is currently dissecting and calcifying my pieces such that they fit into its twisted vision of an eternal, perfect state of the universe. What's the best counter in this situation?

Sometimes having a reputation for being smart beats actually being smart.
I once beat my school’s chess champion in a game because he spent the entire match desperately trying to work out my strategy because I was “smart” and therefore good at chess.
We were playing with a Lord of the Rings chess set. I was moving the characters I liked best.
I’m terrible at chess.

Having a human chess game would be incredible because it would have the potential to be the most tense and violent game in the series.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The players are divided into two groups (white and black pieces) and each elects a leader (Gi-Hun becomes the leader of the white pieces and Player 100 the leader of the black pieces). They will have the role of dictating the movements of each player under their command on the board, obeying the same rules as conventional chess, where eliminating a piece would be death using the same knives as hide-and-seek. Players would not be allowed to leave their positions without an order nor impede the action of other players, and must remain within their square.
The leader could then choose players to be his special pieces, differentiating them from common pawns and giving him important advantages in the game:
On Gi-Hun's team:
Jun-Hee is the King, remaining protected
Hyun-Ju is the Queen
Dae-Ho is the Knight
Yong-Sik is the Bishop
Geum-ja is the Rook
On Player 100's team:
Myung-Gi is the King
Nam-gyu is the Queen
Min-su is the Bishop
Random players are the Knight and Rook
— Queen Sacrifice: "Due to its value [...] its sacrifice, in relation to other pieces, are positions that usually determine the outcome of the game." The Queen position would provide the greatest offensive potential in the game, so the clash between Hyun-Ju and Nam-gyu would be a crucial turning point.
It would be very interesting because most people would literally be trusting their lives in every decision Gi-Hun made, literally being his soldiers. Everything would have to be exhaustively thought out, and watching them die one by one without being able to prevent him would tear him apart.
Tumblr media
It would be even more interesting if In-Ho hadn't yet revealed himself; he would kill without mercy as if he relished following Gi-Hun's orders as a devoted subject.

Just today I got to see a chess book that I remember reading as a little kid. While it didn't give me a lifelong passion for chess, it did give me a lifelong passion for fantasy for its artwork.
The book is "Chess for Young Beginners" from 1975, and here's some of the artwork:

Like, this artwork goes hard. I especially appreciate the colour scheme for the black pieces, with its browns, bronzes, reds and oranges.

This artwork is amazing, evocative, exciting and dramatic. I recommend giving it a look if you have a chance - you can probably scrounge up a PDF of this thing with a bit of searching.

@magnusdidntwantablog won because I let him!
Also god damn that took way longer than I expected (mostly due to some people registering and not making any moves)
Come on chessblr only 4 ppl are registered to the daily tourney that starts tomorrow! (and they're all higher rated than I am which I am NOT a fan of!)
