Ok, so I checked all the available dubs on Netflix Belgium to see how other languages refer to nonbinary people and... they handle it pretty good!

I don't have the answer for all languages tbh, I'm not familiar enough with japanese or korean and their language structure to tell how they translated the series, but almost all other languages either give no pronouns (the language works that way) or use they/them (or some similar neutral pronoun).

Hebrew and Mandarin use 'masculine' they/them, which is a pronoun that naturally exists in both languages though using it to refer to a single individual is pretty new. Great languages for demigender people to learn!

Romance languages (think Portuguese, French, Spanish, ect.) use neopronouns. It's fun to see that, though it was recently created, all romance neopronouns look and sound similar (ile, iel, elu, ...)!

Three languages, however, directly went the "he/him" way:

Castellano (Spaniard Spanish), which is weird cause you can choose not to use pronouns;

Romanian, which sucks but considering most romanian rp servers ban you if you play as the "wrong" gender... I get it;

Norwegian, which came as a surprise.

Like IDK if it's just my European perception of the Nordics, but I always see them as super open-minded. Not sure what happened here...

All that to say, I'm happily surprised to see that China is shown as more open to nonbinary people in kids media than some European countries. Way to go, guys!

It's so confusing to engage with fandom/fiction or interest in multiple language

So, to be fair, I wasn't aware of my mistake when I started BSD. My friend just showed me the show, her native language is english but mine is french. So she showed were to watch BSD in english dub, cool. Then I remembered their was a french evrsion, so I started the anime in french as well. I was so confuse by the change of the abillity's name. I mean it make sense : the abillity are named after litterary work. So when you translate them, it's really important to have something pleasing to hear, that translate a vibe. I am sure the english name of the abillity don't look that much like their original name, at least for a fair amount of them. And the two trad translate the anime/mangas from japanese, not any other language.

But when you're used to the name "No longer human", (wich is honestly a book title that slap. Wdym you're not human anymore ?? What happened ??) and then you read the mangas or watch the anime and the abillity is called "la déchéance d'un homme" ("the ruin of a man" or something like that). The name slap, and slap even more when you know that Ango Sakaguchi's power is called "discour sur la déchéance" (It translate like the english name). It just feel like Ango is judging Dazai. But it is CONFUSING ! It's even more confusing when you consider that mangas translator don't seem to have the same restriction than the anime translator, or maybe they're different team ? Idk, because the Akiko's abillity in the english ver of the anime is "thou shall not die" (tu ne mourra pas/tu ne dois pas mourrir) and in the french dub of the anime her power is named "personne ne mourra" (nobody will die) but in the mangas ? It's "Ne meurt pas" (don't die). I love all these names and they slap in their own way but it is really confusing

And after confusion come desapointement. Because it is oh so cool to engage with bsd and discovering the character dynamics but then you realise they don't translate lik you thought they would. Like Atsushi using "tu" (non formal "you") to refer to Kunikida but I just have to close my eyes to hear him say "mister Kunikida" in english and it feel a bit weird. I ould've def have done something else if I was the one doing the translation.

Oh, and don't get me started on Ace Attorney !

I had such high hopes for the iconic lines of the second trilogy when they had finally been translated in french this year. And some didn't desapointed ! But AA4 is way less gay. "That's the first time I felt this way with a man" just don'thave the same implication than "tu es le premier homme qui me dévisage comme ça" (you're the first man looking at me like that). The first one feel like Klavier is coming out and the second...Well...Apollo is already charmed.

Also Klavier is named...Konrad in french, wich is a good name actually. And he's not german anymore !! I was so used to this trait in the screen of AA4 I saw that this almost felt OOC. But at least he studied in germany.

But some name are sooo thougtfull. Ted Tonate became Alex Plausif. And Simon Blacquill is Jack Lamenoire (Jack because of "Jacque à dit" wich is just the french name of the game "Simon says" and lamenoire for lame noire (black blade) or l'âme noire (black soul) ). Still, it feel weird when I try to engage with the fandom cuz I get used to these french name for HOURS of games. I'm litteraly going on wiki fandom just to know about what guy ya'll are talking about on tumblr even if their story was the most impacting I ever saw on Ace Attorney.

Enough time has passed that I can share my opinion about Dawntrail now. It's a potentially unpopular point of view at times so uh... beware? Idk, people have very strong feelings about stuff sometimes xD

At the very least, beware of spoilers.

Overall I liked the story. Liked it a lot more that Endwalker despite a few things that bothered me. The first half is the most solid to me, because the second half has too much incoherent stuff going on for my taste.

But first thing first. I'm really happy with how well they made us care for all those new people and this giant country. Once or twice, I wished they wouldn't insist on how diverse it is I must say, because while it's nice as a marketing point, it gets old after a while. I have eyes and ears, after all. I can see that for myself.

Wuk Lamat left me cold when we first met her. I was a bit worried about accompanying her at first because she's a character archetype I don't like that much, but she quickly grew on me through the expansion, and I love her now. I do think, however, that the voice acting didn't always match the energy of the scenes (in English. According to friends who use the French dub, it's not an issue in French). Since it also happened once or twice with Koana, I'm gonna assume it's due to how they were directed, but it took me out of the story on occasions.

I really really wish they'd stop with the world threatening shit though. They did it for Endwalker. Fine. Logic even, it was the end of a 10 years old story. Then they did it again with the patches, when really saving the dragon should have been motivation enough. Then they had to do it once more in the second half of Dawntrail, this time threatening the Source AND the reflections. Frankly, it feels cheap and unimaginative, I'm a bit disappointed and worried about what comes in future expansions if they can't find other reasons for us to fight. For a game that keeps insisting that doing the right thing is what matters, they certainly don't like making it our main reason to fight.

The Mamool Ja story bothers me. They survived for centuries on eating bananas apparently and there's no sign of deficiencies so clearly they're adapted to their environment? And if not, nothing stopped them from cutting down trees to make space for the sun? Idk the fact that they spent centuries down there but need a foreigner to teach them how to live well rubs me wrong.

Solution 9 looks dope, though. Loved meeting Otis and Gulool Ja. For Sphene, I understand why they kept Wuk Lamat as the focus, but it felt like a missed occasion to teach her that wanting the happiness of her people and actually bringing it are two different things. Instead, it felt like listening to a teenager telling you that fixing the world is easy when they have no idea what's even wrong with it. In character, perhaps, but frustrating when you have so much more practical experience.

Not to mention that Sphene's issues with the weight of expectations echoe nicely with the weight of the WoL's mantle, and we didn't even get to pipe in to try to connect with her. Or with Zoraal Ja, for that matter.

The twins were entirely unnecessary. Them joining us felt forced and nothing in the expansion made me change my mind. They have nothing to do here except stealing potential lines from the WoL to say out loud the most obvious thing like it's deep. I love them both, but they should have stayed in Garlemald. It's not like the Garleans give a fuck about how the rest of the world deal with their shit anyway, and they visited enough places already. Tural gave them nothing they weren't already aware of.

Erenville got many hugs from my WoL, idc that the MSQ won't make it canon.

I'm still indifferent to Krile, but the Scions didn't grow on me before ShB so I'm giving her time. Still, I would've liked it better if instead of the twins, we'd had her and G'raha with us instead. You know, the guy with actual ruling experience of people from diverse backgrounds.

Slightly disappointed we didn't get to fight Thancred and Urianger tbh. That would have been fun XD

The whole time shenanigans hurt my brain in the second part. Like, if 30 years passed in just a few days for us then they shouldn't have had time to prepare Tuliyollal's defense. The dragons intervening was cool but there were better ways to make it happen without mysteriously forgetting that time flows differently inside the dome. Unless I missed something to explain why very conveniently it aligns now?

I liked the last zone. Gpose bait lmao I found it sadder that Ultima Thule tbh. Though, uh... we were in a hurry. Now wasn't the time to talk to every dead people we met.

Also I don't think it'll happen since he seems to have joined the guards, but I want Bakool Ja Ja to travel with us and Erenville for a while xD

Overall, I really liked it don't get me wrong. Aside from Thancred and Urianger, I don't think any Scion was truly useful however (not even Krile). This was my main problem with the time stuff, but I suppose they're not ready to let them go just yet.

And the graphical update makes me want to travel through all the areas and take screenshots until my hard drive can't take it anymore x)

Ok quick rant about the attempts at portraying "girl power":

Honestly idk about D'jok being annoyed they're all girls, this with the Elektra's comment earlier are examples of S3 being more heavy-handed like, “yeah these players are girls, but ACTUALLY that doesn't mean they're not good players!”. Compare this to the previous seasons where we just... had players that were really good and happened to be girls, and no one needed to comment on it? Like, Kernor is the top goal keeper and Lun-Zaera is the best striker for the Wambas, plus Tia was the Snow Kid's biggest weapon in season 1 so I don't think D'jok would immediately dismiss the girls like that. Maybe he would be disconcerted at being the only boy, but still. It's like in the lego n/in/ja/go movie where they were like “she's a GIRL, but she can still be a NINJA!” which has a weird psychological effect of actually enforcing to kids that there is some sort of disparity between men and women, when instead they could just portray her as an equal and let that do the talking, no need to manufacture sexism so you can call it out like “hey, we're so progressive!” (not that you can't have stories with that too, I just don't think it makes as much sense in this situation and shows a different approach than the first two seasons).

no one is going to read this whole post i just have to like write it down because it's so insane crazy the world of city hunter movies is so baffling, like idk if other manga/anime series have this level of strange stuff happening movie wise maybe they do? there are multiple theatrical movies: .357 Magnum, Bay City Wars, Million Dollar Conspiracy, then the newer ones, Shinjuku Private Eyes, and Angel Dust. Multiple ovas/television movies The Secret Service, Goodbye My Sweetheart, and Death of Vicious Criminal Ryo Saeba. Ok all normal Then there is the world of live action city hunter movies which are like. City Hunter 1993: hong kong adaption of the movie starring jackie chan (? never understood it's bad casting honestly) but also, i've read that he didn't like the raunchy humor which is like, 90% of the humor, so they cut a lot of it out of the movie. this is a pretty normal adaption despite not being that accurate. jackie chan also dresses as chun-li from street fighter in this movie Saviour of the Soul 1991: this is the most bizarre thing i could imagine, this movie was released in 1991 making it the first actual "adaption" of the material despite it being like...the only thing i can say is martial arts fantasy au? and to make this even funnier there is a second movie that has nothing to do with the FIRST movie so i have no idea what this even is anymore. The second movie has a character named the Devil King and is about "a special block of ice that is said to contain the life essence of immortality" like idk this seems like the FUNNIEST possible adaption you can make of a crime/slapstick story about a guy who always has a boner? i see so many people praising this movie saying it has like amazing action and story and costumes but that's so freaking funny why is it city hunter au Mr. Mumble 1996: UNOFFICAL hong kong adaption of the manga/anime. like holy shit hello all the characters are here..the MAIN character is in the same outfit from the anime...how does this not get you sued badly. But funnily enough it looks like the most accurate hong kong adaption. because there are three of them. and the one that copies the most is unofficial and unlicensed. wonderful world we live in i think its just so funny Nicky Larson et le Parfum de Cupidon 2018: since city hunter aired in france with a very bad dub it has a very large following and so there is a live action movie for it over 30 years after it was first published. everyone is french. pamela anderson is in this movie there's a kdrama series but it isn't anything like the source material apart from the name really so i dont think it counts also it's annoying because i always see it all over when i want to se the anime oh also there's a live action adaption of the city hunter alternate universe sequel series............there's so much stuff here Finally they are finally planning on making a japanse adaption and it's going to be on netflix. in 2024. i think that's it.

closing thoughts:

J'accuse ! (1919) - it is... so long... and because it's a silent epic i can't even work on something else while i watch because i need to pay attention to the intertitles so i know what the heck's happening. aghGHGh. but okay. it is an interesting film! there's early use of a moving camera, quick cuts, and montage editing, which is all really neat in a film history way. there was also a lot of location shooting, including in real ww1 battlefields and of the battle of saint-mihiel, which is both extremely impressive and extremely unsettling in a "how much of this is an unintentional snuff film" kind of way. and in terms of its unsettling aspect, it's far more of a romantic war drama than a horror film, but there's certainly horrific elements. i'd classify it in the vein of social horror akin to freaks (1932), where it's primarily a human interest social drama but when the characters are not permitted to pursue their own needs and desires due to larger societal issues, horror elements are drawn on toward the end to leave a final lasting terror in the audience for their own complicity in those issues. (let's call this "horrific social drama.") in freaks the larger issues are ableism and the eugenics movement, in j'accuse it's the devastating impact of ww1. this is scattered throughout in the film's hilarious repeated shot of the grim reaper and his dancing skeleton minions, then culminates in a proto-modern!zombie "return of the dead" sequence at the end. idk, i don't love it as entertainment since it's not really my thing, but it's interesting. also, random note, but i like how they handled françois's character... he was a scumbag abusive husband but got decent character development and felt like a fully-dimensional person. still a scumbag, but a well-realized one.

13 Ghosts (1960) - oh shit, new fave movie dropped. this movie is so fun!!!!! genuinely creepy but also with a goofy 3D gimmick that combined doesn't always work, but is presented with such classic william castle ballyhoo that i can't help but be charmed. i should be irked by the completely ridiculous ending where the (blissfully not annoying) kid watches a man who was about to kill him gets freaking MURDERED and is clearly traumatized by it and then the next day is just like "wow :) this house is great! i hope we never leave!!! :D," but i am too busy adding "watch this in the original illusion-o vision" to my cinematic bucket list.

Un monstre à Paris (2011) - felt kind of lousy and decided to go for something light. got exactly what i needed <3 this movie is really cute! the human characters are all either kind of boring or not very original, but francœur the monster has all of my heart, which combined is pretty standard for monster movies so i am okay with this. the music was also really good, and as poto-related media goes, i really love that the voice they picked for francœur is a very high, soft voice. not only does it make me feel great about MY voice, but if i remember the book correctly that's the voice erik has (or at least how i interpreted it) instead of the deeper "sexy" voice he tends to get given in adaptations. i've only ever seen/heard one erik with that kind of higher and gentler voice before, peter straker in the ken hill musical, so this was really exciting for me and i loved it a lot. that said, this movie SHOULD have been a 2D animated film oh my god. the concept art and storyboards they had in the end credits were SO gorgeous and i think would have really made the film pop much more than the pretty standard and unappealing 3D animation we got.

The Werewolf (1956): puts my grubby gay fingers all over the celluloid. this movie is a metaphor for being gay in the 1950s! you've got this average family man doomed by an encounter with two mad scientists who work and live together in a tooooootallllllyyyyy heterosexual way who then infect him with evil gay werewolf disease (that is related to nuclear stuff because it's the 50s and everything needs to be about nuclear stuff). he forgets his hetero identity and the wife and son he has waiting for him at home, promptly goes into a bar where a man asks him to buy him a drink and then attempts to rob him, leading to them lying on top of each other in an alley while a little old lady gawks and screams at the horrible sight of their entangled man legs. then mr. average family man kills the evil propositioning man and goes and kills more men, turning into an evil gay werewolf by his emotional reactions to them. he doesn't want his wife and son to see the monster he has become and avoids them, seeking solitude so he won't shame them and be tempted to murder by the sexy murderificness of men. and then of course in the end he dies by mob violence, forever doomed to never return to the non-lycanthropic heteronormative life he once knew. A+++++

The Tingler (1959) - my favorite vincent price and william castle movie ever... an underrated masterpiece of meta horror. i've seen this movie before, and ugh! everything about it is perfect to me. if ever anyone wants to understand me better they should watch this because it's got everything: vincent price, a goofy concept played completely straight, meta filmmaking, a really amazing partialized colorized sequence... this is a movie i need to see in a theater SO BAD, but only so long as the percepto gimmick is in place for peak experience.

Coraline (2009) - this was unplanned but we needed to endurance test a room over an extended period of time at work, and the best way to do that is by watching a movie, and this is what got picked! i had to step out to run and errand in the middle of it, so i didn't technically see all of it, but that's okay, i've seen it before. definitely need to see this one in theaters someday when i get the chance--just watching it on a large projector screen with all the lights off and blinds closed was great, the colors and stop motion really really really POP and are so gorgeous and UGH. i love it. this movie shows in theaters every year in the area where i live, but never at good times so i constantly miss it and then am all >:( because everyone i know keeps getting the chance to see it instead of me. someday, though! someday...

okay. phew. this was fun. i don't normally put this much thought and attention into all the things i watch, or watch movies back to back like this, and for good reason because it. is. exhausting. fun, but EXHAUSTING.

no more! i return now to my vegetative tv viewer state... at least until i do my pride movie marathon in june. but that's another story <3

i'm back home.

it was a religious experience for me for as far as i can say, i'm still so dizzy. I had tears in my eyes the whole way through and some specific scenes or musics would immediately open the floodgates and by the end of the movie i was a complete sobbing mess.

I haven't watched this movie in so long yet it still hits me in all the ways it could possibly hit me. I've never outgrown my ff7 phase huh

There was a mini interview/documentary before the start of the movies about the devs talking about how Advent Children inspired them to do the remake, and this whole section was filled with shots from the remakes and the movies and the original game. I cried at the first shot showing Cloud jumping from the train, i cried even harder when they showed Aerith, and then they showed a demo of Rebirth which was one of the scenes where Sephiroth and "Cloud" work together and then again i was wailing like an idiot.

then it was honestly just jumping from one scene to the next crying.

I watched Advent Children mostly with the English Dub because i was used to it from Crisis Core, so i mostly know the dialogues from there (and would like. mutter them to myself at some times before the lines happened because oughh)

Point is that in the English version at some point when Cloud comes back he says "i think i made through it, all that shilly shally", which was a sweet reference to what Tifa and Aerith told him, but hearing back in the Japanese that he doesn't refer to that at all was one thing, the other thing was to see this line translated in french "i've been carrying my pain for so long, i think maybe it's starting to wear off" (idk how to translate it well bc it's not about how it's disappearing, more just that the pain itself is worn off) and i fucking sat there in the theater like wow why do i still relate to Cloud Strife in the rip year of 2024, i thought i was over this i thought i was over this i th-

(granted all of his scenes still reminded me Why and how it's still accurate but this is because i wasn't used to this punch that it took me by surprise, as if saying "Cloud Strife in Advent Children is so relatable" isn't already a walking red flag.)

Every single Aerith and Zack scenes had me sobbing ugly tears so i'm normal. i'm so normal. I'm so fucking normal.

Bless Reno's soul for being the one thing that would constantly make me laugh in this movie though. God bless him because this amoral freak will never see the light of heaven but he lighted up my evening

also i forgot just how cool the Fusion Sword was. Is it one sword? is it two swords? well it's a Fuck You Sword that's what.

I forgot just how cool Vincent was actually, i think seeing exactly how he moves on the big screen was so much more impactful than all the other times i watched this movie

and honestly the whole screening was worth it if only for the whole fight against Sephiroth near the end. Hearing One Winged Angel blasting all around me just got me vibrating, and man, he's still the worst <33333

ALSO the Zack scene during the Sephiroth fight, everytime i forget that Zack asks Cloud if he needs his help to fight Sephiroth (because what he says before and after that is what kill me on the spot) but with the Rebirth scene i saw earlier today it shot me in the fucking face are you kidding meeeeeeeeee

And aside just from the problem duo, i was crying everytime the rest of the ff7 cast was on screen. It really felt like coming home to your family and all. god it was emotional.

Anyway i'm so normal. I cried the whole way through like a ff7 fan.

I really need to pick up the remake again seeing it as a sequel because i miss them all.

So yeah. I'm back home. I had a normal one

oh and Seiyuu wise it's so funny to me how Suzuken really don't sound like Sandalphon at all but Sakurai does really sound like something midway to his Lucifer and Lucilius' voice and it got me even more psych dmg the whole time.

I admit, I laugh for you answer.

Since my Spanish is actually Chilean, and I grew up with dubbed neutral series or with Mexicanisms, I can understand them very well, and of course, like all healthy rivalries, we laugh at castellano (the way we call Spanish from Spain to differentiate it).

I laugh even more thinking about the word "Mierda" , Spanish speakers (Mexican one) use it more as rudeness than anything else, but in castellano it's more like something bad, horrible, poop, I've even managed to understand that.

You saw my surprise when I saw Naruto doubled up in castellano and he said

and I

"*shock* Mom!! Naruto say a bad word!!".

For me Mierda is shit.

Okay, I know we are all excited about episode 9 (me first), but I just watched episode 7 in the french dub and ooh boy. OOOH BOY.

If you want to know, the streaming company in charge of VnC in France already stated on their twitter that they are open to shipping:

So I was happy about it, but did not thought much of it. THEN THE EPISODE DROPPED AND HOLY SHIT. Basically, they managed, through well placed replicas and good acting, to regain the original ambiguous feeling of the manga!

Instead of staying silent when Noé puts a hand to his heart after being thanked by Jeanne, he replies “No it was nothing really...” And add a noise when Vanitas gives him his Tarte Tatin so we understand Noé is surprised about the Tarte and not being cut in his own thoughts... Or if it was the case, it wasn’t about Jeanne.

Later on, when he asks Vanitas to dance with him he is very casual about it, and when he asks about love to Vanitas, and the other describes his symptoms, instead of being all “oh I see it’s like having a fever! I understand!” he is “You sure you aren’t simply sick?” and like, I mean I understand he is disregarding Vanitas feelings for Jeanne here, but... Isn’t that what jealous people do?

“Le cœur qui accélère et des frissons qui te parcours sans cesse...? Tu es sûr que tu n’as pas attrapé la grippe en faite?”

“The heart racing and constant shivers...? You sure you didn’t actually caught the flu?”

So I am very happy. We have the same images sequences, and yet, it feels closer to the manga. the joys of adaptions.

On another smaller note: they went all in with puns this episode, Noé talks about Vanitas blood the same way we would talk about wine and... The sexy scenes were very sexy. All in all, idk what happened in the recording studio, but they went WILD.

Edit: Update, the official account posted the images of Noé looking at Vanitas with sparkles with Vanitas replica “I’m not interested in the kind of person who would fall for me.” if that do not scream to you “god we ship it but anime fanbases won’t let us!” then I don’t know.
