i watched the black cat with boris karloff and béla lugosi last night and WHAT is up with karloff's whole aesthetic in this movie.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
ah, the old hollywood approximation of the aleister crowley vibe. the eyeliner. the wacky eyebrows. the widow's peaks so high you could climb mountains in them as you ascended to the heights of his not-1950s cheapo alien uppercut. the occultist chic/proto-manos robes and jewelry. lugosi being all "the years have been kind to you" like this man doesn't look haggard as fuck and wildly out of place in his funky art deco mansion in the middle of a ww1 cemetary. he looks like he should be battling superman for world domination and i for one aspire to be this level of pretentiously mysterious. 11/10. RIP that his clothes are so easy to rip, though.

🎃 Halloween Horror-thon with Noel Bleu 🎃
Every Halloween, I indulge my love for horror movies with an all-night marathon that dates back to my teenage years. This tradition has evolved into an annual event, where friends and family join for a night full of screams, snacks, and spine-chilling tales. Even my son Cairo is getting in on the fun—he kicks things off with some kid-friendly Halloween specials before passing the reins to the…

CT:OS Halloween bonus
As promised, wrote like a fiend this month and banged out almost a full chapter's worth of content for spooky season!
The update is three-quarters of chapter 7 (about 40k words including code and variants), and picks up where Sam's visit left off.
Release dates:
It will be out to ko-fi supporters on 31 Oct, and a week after to the public :)
Features:
Deal with the aftermath of your decisions over the weekend (talk to G, Tobin or Rayyan) <True horror>
Attend a language fellow/exchange student dinner-gathering as G's plus one (and the only American in the group). <the G-only scene I promised! You don't have to be dating.>
Prep Halloween costumes with your hallmates (yes, chaotic), and go trick or treating! 🎃
Attend a party after with the team ... then stay for horror movie marathon + sleepover or head back to Haynes to end the night with G.
Yep, Halloween hookups (however ill-advised ;)) are possible.
You can end this chapter very much in a committed relationship with the RO of your choice.
More details on the rest of the chapter/plans for CT:OS for 2024 below the cut.
Note: The rest of chapter 7 will include midterms, a time-skip (with some training/a match) and some fall festival shenanigans (because I love fall festivals). It should add up to a pretty chunky chapter that pretty much seals Act 1 of CT:OS (the 'settling into Cargill' part - establishing most of MC's friendships, routines, and possibly romances, forming a solid base for Act 2.)
I'll start writing the rest of the chapter once I'm done with Merry Crisis, and hope to get it out by end-Dec. We'll see! :)

jjk 2024 halloween event | masterlist
— yuji x fem! reader; established relationship, both yuji and reader are in their early twenties just because i said so; some spookiness 🫠
— a/n: first fic from the halloween event !! writing this was a pretty chaotic process as my life lately got chaotic as well. anyway, enjoy ! i know there isn't really a lot of romance in this one, but i promise the next fics will fix that!
Tumblr media
'i'll be there in 15!' said the message your boyfriend just sent to you. a soft smile formed on your face as you typed a quick reply. throwing your phone onto the couch, you came back to work.
looking around the living room you nodded to yourself with satisfaction. you really outdid yourself this year. the halloween decorations looked neat, your costume - stunning. you placed a bunch of snacks on the table too, of course everything was in theme.
you turned the tv on, knowing that yuji will be here any moment. you had this tradition, that you always spent halloween together; it was your favourite holiday after all. this year, your little date was about to take place in your apartment, and you two decided on a horror movie night together. you both loved these, and you couldn't wait to start the marathon.
it was about to be your fourth? no, fifth halloween spent together. the whole tradition started back in your teenage years, and it still brings as much joy now as it did before. you smiled to yourself at the memories of previous dates.
an incoming phone call made you snap out of your thoughts. you sat down on the couch, taking the phone from where you threw it before, and accepting the call with a sigh. yuji was usually coming late to every gathering, so he was probably calling just to say that.
"what is it this time?" you spoke to the phone, leaning against the couch. "please don't tell me you forgot your keys again." you sighed.
you were expecting to hear your boyfriend's voice, muttering some apologies, but you were welcomed with silence. that made you feel a bit uneasy.
"yuji...?" you said softly, a frown forming on your face. "is everything alright?"
a low voice spoke on the other line, making you feel a shiver down your spine. "what's your favourite scary movie?" the voice asked, and you started to turn around automatically, just to make sure no one is near.
after a few seconds, you let out a chuckle. "very funny, yuji. seriously? this won't scare me!" you said dismissively, although you still felt a bit uneasy.
"you should be coming here, not pulling pranks on me!" settling down on the couch you continued. "but still, how did you manage to lower your voice like that? it's pretty convincing."
just when you were about to say something else, the main door opened, your boyfriend rushing inside. "so so sorry i'm late!" he muttered, struggling to catch his breath after running. you smiled, walking up to him and kissing his cheek, the phone still in your hand.
"finally." you sighed as you took his hand and dragged him further inside. "was it really worth it to be late just to pull a stupid prank on me that didn't even work?"
"what prank?" yuji tilted his head in confusion. "i don't know what you're talking about."
you scoffed. "oh come on. stop pretending! i told you, you won't scare me this easily!"
to prove your point you raised your phone, but your eyebrows furrowed as you noticed the call is still ongoing. hesitantly, you put the device close to your ear again.
a shiver went down your spine as you heard that low voice again.
"your boyfriend is here too, eh? perfect. that makes the three of us."

Mononoke: Karakasa Review
Mononoke - Phantom in the Rain
Tumblr media
Now that it's officially out globally, I can finally offer some thoughts and reflections on the long-awaited continuation of the cult-beloved Ayakashi/Mononoke series. My main tagline for this review can be summarized thusly:
I liked it...but it could have been better.
(~ not spoiler free, read at your own discretion ~)
Karakasa: Visually, it's a bang---structurally, it's a bomb. That about sums up how I feel about the movie overall. It's vibrant, beautiful, and full of intricate patterning and details, and is in a way: both a step up and a step down from the original.
...But what do I mean by that really? Well, I think we need to first highlight what makes Karakasa and Mononoke rather different.
Ayakashi/Mononoke has a much slower pacing, with slightly more muted, and washed-aesthetic tone despite its colourful designs. It shifts from being more colourful or more sombre depending on the type of scene it wants to depict. But even at its most saturated, it never gets quite as vibrant in contrast compared to Karakasa. ...However, you could say that may be in part due to the sheer difference in animation techniques developed over the course of nearly a decade between the two (2006/2007 vs 2024).
That isn't to say Karakasa doesn't have moments of dark imagery, but that even at its darkest, it remains distinctly vibrant and high-in-contrast. You could argue for it as a conscientious choice...but personally, at its root: Mononoke is a horror-ghost story; and the gritter, muddled palettes rather add to that charm.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
(2024 Karakasa)
To match its mood, Mononoke also has a much slower cadence and story tempo, despite any singular arc being overall shorter than Karakasa. That cadence adds to another difference: which is spookiness. I find Mononoke to be far spookier and more effortlessly imposing than Karakasa. There's a bit of tension and suspense in the way it's presented: both visually and vocally* (a point I'll bring up later). Mononoke is sometimes boldly laid out in seemingly disjointed flashes, but still somehow ends up cohesive and immersive with its themes and motifs; feeding you just enough information to wet your appetite as to where and just how far it wants to take you. And this is of course, done in parts over the span of 2-3 episodes.
Karakasa on the other hand, has a pacing that feels like a marathon. It seems almost lightning fast, despite the first half of the movie being entirely sociopolitical intrigue without much in the way of anything overtly youkai-esque. In fact, our Medicine Seller doesn't even step foot into the Ooku (women's court) until around 40 minutes in...which is nearly half the movie! ...But naturally, since it's a movie, it will be movie-formatted. Everything is going to run as if it were one singular episode long. --- Still, what does that mean for the pacing?
If you don't know what "tea house tales" "is.....it's basically a format of short stories told over several sessions. It's one of the ways people in the historic East used to tell stories. They'd gather around somewhere, drink tea, eat snacks and share a bit of light entertainment. In the same way the episodic nature of Mononoke is somewhat reminiscent of that. Each part feeds you a bit of information, a bit of mystery, a bit of suspense, and a bit of action. It keeps you sufficiently entertained one way or another without stringing you on far too long before any sort of climactic reveal. In this way, Mononoke feels more balanced and evened out than Karakasa. But even the format aside, I found Karakasa a lot less clear and concise with what it's trying to portray. There were parts of the movie I had to re-watch a few times or sit down and think about afterwards just to fully understand what I think it was alluding to, which wasn't an issue with Mononoke whatsoever. The plot, both visually and thematically was always clear as day for the original series, where as Karakasa sort of muddles on and off between mystery and court drama over the course of an hour and a half.
Personally...I think one of the detriments to Karakasa is the sheer size of its cast. There were simply way too many characters (27+), and some of them even have overlapping roles. There were also quite a few without clear rhyme or reason. For example, we get introduced to Tenshi, Mizoragi and the moon twins, and an assortment of other characters who don't really have much of a presence in the movie (other than to to be positional seat warmers) and are shown for a collective total of a few minutes. Karakasa IS a trilogy however, so it's possible that their roles may be elaborated in future movies, but in regards to the current film, they feel like a distraction. I guess they're going grand and all out, but the benefits of a smaller cast is that you get more intimate with each character and their already very limited screentime. It just wasn't possible for me to feel any intimacy or investment into the large cast of Karakasa---Asa and Kame included.
Comparatively; I always felt truly, fully immersed in all the story arcs of the original Ayakashi/Mononoke. I cared about the characters, or was so invested in their sorrowful tale. But I didn't particularly feel that way about Karakasa because whatever message it was trying to convey kind of got lost in-between all the court drama...which, I'm not sure some viewers may even understand or empathize with unless they already have some knowledge of what women in the imperial harem go through or how it functions. (Speaking of which, Asa practically speed ran the exposition towards the end regarding Kitagawa and her own motives.) Just to name a few: there's the rank struggles of Asa and Kame versus the leaders of the Ooku; the political positions of Fuki, Botan and the other consorts, the political household ties of Saburomaru, the grip of Mizoragi's strange cult, and the (lack of) political power that Tenshi (the emperor) holds versus the Shogunate in the Capital (---I'm not entirely sure what timeline we're in right now, but the fact that there IS a Shogunate implies a lot.)
...Anyway, you can see why there are too many distractions in this movie for me to fully feel immersed in whatever it's trying to tell. It's supposed to be a movie of women's suffering (under the weight of men and the social sphere I suppose), but most of the time it felt more like I was just simply suffering watching women cat fight each other until they quickly got picked off by the Karakasa mononoke.
Speaking of the titular "Karakasa", though... it certainly was an interesting choice of youkai. I wonder if it was because traditionally, karakasa aren't violent youkai, they're merely scary tricksters; and it wasn't as if Kitagawa was really out for revenge (though she did pick off a few people).....actually, now that I've written it out that way, Kitagawa's motives are a little unclear. Or maybe it didn't matter anymore as karakasa grew to the point it became uncontrollable. Either way, I think if they had refocused the movie on Kitagawa and actually visually show the parallels between her, her "friend" and Asa/Kame...instead of giving us a verbal speedrun exposition dump towards the end...I might have felt a little more sympathy (...or just simply anything worth feeling towards the story). But alas.
It certainly didn't help that I was a little unsatisfied with some of the voice cast. For the most part, I was okay with the side cast (particularly the males, since the females hardly had lines); but felt it was a waste that Tsuda Kenjiro (Mizoragi) also hardly had any lines (...though I have a feeling he'll play a bigger role in the next movie). He was actually even one of my 3 ideal choices for Kusuriuri's recast (next to Ishida Akira and Toriumi Kousuke). I've said it before and I'll say it again, I love Kamiya Hiroshi, he is one of my favourites...but I think his role as Kusuriuri was a bit lackluster since his vocal range is medium-high and therefore does not go deep or husky enough to carry the same spook factor that Sakurai Takahiro's voice has. Karakasa also lacks the unique staccato often used in the original Mononoke which gave it an overall interesting sound and pace. I loved the odd vocal nuances and pauses in the previous work and was very sad that it's more or less nonexistent in Karakasa.
My second complaint would be with Asa and Kame's cast, which I felt might've benefited more from actresses with more interesting inflections. Kurosawa Tomoyo is an okay actress. She gets the job done but generally does better on long-running series since she takes a long time to fully have a grip on her role. Honestly, she was on auto-pilot and was quite boring throughout Karakasa. Aoi Yuuki on the other hand has a lot of vocal range, but generally suffers from inconsistency and just sounding like nails on a chalkboard. (I won't even mince it; my housemate walked in on me watching Karakasa on the telly and literally flinched at her voice because it severely hurt her eardrums---my condolences).
Generally speaking, I do prefer older seiyuus, they just have qualities I enjoy more, but I do also think the movie would've benefitted more from either a liveaction casting or a Showa casting. Most of the characters (in both Mononoke and Karakasa) kind of...oddly use modern speech instead of feudal Japanese (minus Utayama), and given that the Ooku IS a court drama, doesn't use court language or any regional dialects whatsoever (granted I'm not even sure if this is Kyoto, Edo, or wherever). Awashima and Mugitani do use formal language, but only Utayama uses slightly older diction. With the exception of a few notable names, most of the cast for Karakasa are from a generation of newer/younger voice actors, whereas Mononoke consists of an older one. You probably won't care unless you're a seiyuu buff, but there is actually a clear vocal distinction between those of different acting generations. For example: Sakurai, Kamiya, Ishida, Tsuda, Ogata, Hayashibara, etc...all have particular qualities to their voice that give it a layer of interest (ie. whispiness, huskiness, nasalness, etc). I don't know if it's caused by the difference in learned language or some other factor, but newer generations of voice actors tend to have more clear-toned voices with more modern inflections. Kurosawa and Aoi both have notably modern inflections when they act. You could say it's a battle of old versus new if we're going by story theme...but in which case, the rest of the cast could've been of an older generation to portray that. (But well, I'm glad they chose an older actress for Utayama, at least). The few exceptions to this are a small handful of modern actresses that are so astoundingly skilled they break that barrier. I kind of wished they had casted Hanazawa for Kame instead but she's already Kitagawa...but in which case, toss Sawashiro Miyuki in that role, I think she would've been a bit spookier. Hanazawa as Kame might've made her more endearing to me, but maybe they were going for the double-double: irritable voice and character combo, since Kame wasn't particularly written to be likeable. --- Kame does somewhat feel like a second generation Kayo (MAO), but I think MAO was still more serviceable to my ears. Anyway. I don't think I should hold up this review post any longer with my derailed rant on voice acting. It is what it is, and at the very least: we found out some lore bombshell that there are possibly at most 64 medicine sellers, and that Sakurai (Ri) Kusuriuri and Kamiya (Kon) Kusuriuri are different characters altogether (---a lot of fans rejoiced about that), making the possibility of two or more existing at one time. Wouldn't that be exciting to see?
Moving on to the music. In contrast to the trailers, the soundtrack in the movie sometimes feel like background white noise. It almost seems like a trend with newer anime, but nowadays, I hardly hear the tracks compared to older shows. Well, in Karakasa in particular, the movie is moving at such a jilted pace: most of the sounds you will hear is either dialogue or the occasional clinks and clangs. They don't really blast OSTs like they used to (...unlike Hollywood movies where I hear too much BGM). --- But following the odd quirks of Ayakashi: some of the vocal themes for Karakasa still are that weird mash of modern and traditional sounds with the occasional rapping. Particularly during the fight scene, there were some hardcore bass rap on cue. I'm not sure if I like or dislike it, but it is different. My favourite track is the Okami-esque flute theme used during the Birth Celebration Ceremony towards the end. But whether it's Mononoke or Karakasa, what stands out in both is not the score, but the sound effects which have always been the distinctive noise of the series.
The teased title for the next installment is "Ashes of Rage". I wonder what that could mean? We're left on a bunch of cliffhangers, such as why did Kusuriuri smile while looking at the clouds, what's the deal with the seal in the well, and what was Mizoragi doing in the cellar pouring water over what looked like an enclosed basin? Moreover, why on earth did they lore drop so much on the background of the medicine sellers...not in the movie but during the side interviews! The fact that they have a home base, or that the Shingi (alters) are different people... So do you mean to tell me, I still can dream of an Ishida Akira Kusuriuri!? There are at most 8 trigram Taima swords, and 2 of which are Sakurai and Kamiya's. Does that mean there's still room for another 6 Kusuriuris? That's so fruity!
If you made it this far, thank you for reading. I also I hope you watched the movie before perusing this given that it's so spoiler heavy. While it does seem like I had a lot of complaints, make no mistake: the movie was gorgeous. It was made with painstaking visual efforts and intricate architecture. Every stroke and splash is a work of art, making it one of the most visually interesting movie in a long time.
While it doesn't replace the old Mononoke in my heart, the Karakasa trilogy is a nice addition; something different and its own thing. A lot more action and a lot more abstract if you dig that sort of presentation.
Given that the trilogy isn't over, I have no doubt the rest of it will continue on with Kamiya's (Kon) Kusuriuri...but I do hope the series continues to keep receiving love so I can eventually have a whole Sentai Kamen rider group of Kusuriuris.
Until next time...~!

Spooky Movie Marathon 2024: Week 2
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Day 6: The Black Cat (1934) - "suggested" by the Edgar Allan Poe short story of the same name (according to the credits, humorously)
Day 7: Encounter with the Unknown (1972)
Day 8: Bijo to Ekitai-ningen (AKA The H Man) (1958) - American cut, English dub
Day 9: Witchcraft (1964)
Day 10: The VelociPastor (2018)
Day 11: The House on Haunted Hill (1999) - remake of the 1959 film of the same name
Day 12: Mary Reilly (1996) - adaptation of the novel of the same name by Valerie Martin, which is itself a parallel novel to Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson
oh boy, where do i even begin... i would love to include sub-bullets to be organized, but tumblr is terrible. so second bullet list i guess:
The Black Cat: was not expecting to love this as much as i did. i knew i would at least like it becaue it has béla lugosi and boris karloff in it, but i was not expecting the sheer brutality of the subject matter or the amazingness of lugosi's performace. going to have to move it above his performance as ygor in son of frankenstein as my favorite performance of his, because wow. also the cinematography oh my god... i only watched this because i needed a really short movie and remembered reading about it in a book on the impact of ww1 on horror films in the 20s and 30s and thougt it sounded interesting, and it REALLY delivered.
Encounter with the Unknown: a big disappointment... i only had this saved because it has rod serling's name attached to it, which honestly is probably how it's suckered a lot of people into watching it, so well played on the marketing people. the music and editing were so bad, which i do try to be more forgiving of in older/indie/directorial debut films, all three of which this movie is. but then the movie had the gall to spend the last ten minutes re-telling each fucking story all over again with the second non-serling narrator just yapping blandly like he was reading a textbook to me. if it had been serling he would have at least made it sound cool and poetic, but as is, i walked away from the movie feeling like it had wasted my time. but to end on a kind note, i really liked the middle story about the mysterious hole. it was sufficiently eerie, even though the music refused to shut up.
Bijo to Ekitai-ningen: i do always prefer and try to watch original cuts for things when i can, especially non-american films, and go for subs instead of dubs, but the version of this i had saved was the dubbed american cut. i looked it up and aparrently the original japanese cut had 9 extra minutes, primarily centering around the drug dealing subplot. i'll have to try and track it down sometime, but for what it was, the version i watched was fun. it was like a crime thriller version of the blob, which apparently came out very shortly after this? in so close a timeframe that it seems unlikely there was ripoffery involved. not sure what was up in 1958 to result in 2 movies about killer slime, but i'm here for it.
Witchcraft: surprisingly good considering i only had this saved because lon chaney, jr., was the top-billed actor and then he barely showed up in it. excellent black and white cinematography and well-executed spooky mood. in true lon chaney, jr., fashion, he constantly looks like a shivering wet dog of a man whenever he's onscreen, and i love it.
The VelociPastor: i love... aaaaa. this movie's humor is exactly the nonsense i go for so i had fun. i will not call it a perfect movie because i raise my eyebrow at the portrayal of china and the chinese a bit, but it was a movie i really enjoyed overall. the editing was also. impressively good. mesmerizing, even. definitely was not expecting that in a movie about a priest who turns into a dinosaur and eats catholic ninjas.
The House on Haunted Hill (1999): this movie is so much fun. it's in that vein of horror remakes like the 1988 blob movie where it updates the genre of the original film to the way it is contemporaneously. in the blob it was updating the film from a fifties teen movie to an eighties teen movie, and in the house on haunted hill it's updating a fifties midnight movie to a nineties one, complete with ballyhoo in both. this makes the 1999 house on haunted hill much more EXTREME! and EDGY!, in true nineties horror fashion, but it still feels like the same genre, just evolved with the times--which if you're going to remake something, is a smart way to do it. i think between the two i like the original better because it's a lot more unique that there's no actual ghosts and it's just two concurrent scooby doo masquerades for elaborate murder plots, and the cheap special effects are a lot more endearing and feel a lot more intentional considering the final plot twist. plus, vincent price is in it, and he's a tough act to beat. maybe if the 1999 movie had given jeffrey combs more scenes and let him combs it up a bit more that might tip the scales a bit, but weirdly enough this movie barely let jeffrey combs do anything, which is A CRIME.
Mary Reilly: i am. definitely not the target audience for this movie. strange case of dr. jekyll and mr. hyde is one of my favorite books and henry jekyll was my high school blorbo, so needless to say i am very pretentious about it and have very specific interpretations of jekyll as a character that i am unfortatenly very rigid in. i read mary reilly in high school during the peak of my strange case hyperfixation and really did not like it, so i was not expecting anything much from the movie and... yeahh.............. it does all the strange case adaptation tricks i despise, like making it a jack the ripper story and focusing all the themes of victorian repression on sexual repression (rather than. repression in general. brought about by years spent in a repressive culture and not suddenly meeting a hot young woman you want to fuck one day). strange case was published in 1886 and the ripper killings were in 1888, i promise every single person adapting the book that it is NOT about jack the ripper and can we please move onto other things oh my god. the closest connection the book has to the ripper killings is that there was a stageplay adaptation running during the time and the guy who played jekyll and hyde was so good there was a crack theory running around london for a while that he was secretly the ripper. that's it. and speaking of the guy who played jekyll and hyde... john malkovich is one of the worst jekyll and hydes i've ever seen. he did a good physical performance as hyde at first, being sufficiently creepy and menacing, but then he started talking and no. no, no. you also know your movie is in trouble when your hyde looks wayyyy too much like tommy wiseau. BLECH. also!!!!!!! the movie did not have mr. utterson in it and i am pettily mad about it!!!!!! but also utterson was presented as an absolute jerk in the mary reilly novel if i remember correctly, when in strange case he's an emotionally repressed (in fitting with the theme not being all about victorian prudishness)/awkward old dork who loves his friends and makes bad puns. so maybe it's for the best he was excluded from the movie (like he is from basically every single strange case adaptation ever despite literally being the main character in the book oh my god. this man is the vice president of forgotten fictional characters more important than hollywood thinks. the daroga in phantom of the opera is president). definitely not my movie or take on strange case, but i'll give it this: jekyll's cabinet looked really good! the sets in this movie were lovely all around and that one in particular was excellent. julia roberts was also very good and made me care about mary much more than the book ever did. so good for her.
by god that was a lot of text. anyway. until next week. i'm going to watch return to the house on haunted hill for sure, as well as something i know i'll like tonight to wash out the vitriol that mary reilly left me with. but we'll see how it goes. i like infusing randomnes and spontaneity into this marathon, it keeps things from getting boring.
rankings, ratings, and lists thus far:
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) (duh)
The VelociPastor (2018)
The House on Haunted Hill (1959)
The House on Haunted Hill (1999)

Ghost Stories | Jongho
🧡 Pairing: Choi Jongho x gf!Reader
🖤 Requested by: Anon
🧡 Prompt: 18 - Telling ghost stories.
🖤 Warnings: Ghosts. This one involves babies, midwives and a matron (chief or head nurse). The ghost story Jongho tells is inspired by one of the many experiences I had as a kid. I tried to make it spooky but let's face it as much as I love spooky stuff, I suck at writing it.
🧡 Word Count: 1,783
🖤 Taglist: Open. Send an ask or fill out the Tag List Form. Please note that the halloween event taglist is included in the general taglist.

Y/N and Jongho were finally enjoying their first date night in what felt like months. This Halloween, they opted for a cozy evening at home, ready to dive into a marathon of scary movies while indulging in takeout and snacks they bought the day before. They’d politely declined all their friends' invitations to Halloween parties and events and placed a bowl filled with candy outside the door so they weren’t interrupted by trick or treaters. However, they were caught off guard by an unexpected power outage caused by a drunk driver crashing into the transformer that supplies electricity to their block.
"How about instead of scary movies, we tell scary stories instead," Y/N suggests lighting her last candle so they have a little bit of light.
"Who are you and what have you done with my girlfriend," he chuckles, not quite believing the words coming out of her mouth. This is coming from someone who only watches scary movies on Halloween with the compromise that they keep the lights and a promise to follow up with something lighthearted afterwards. He thought she’d be relieved to skip the scary stuff altogether. "Are you possessed or something?" he joked, leaning in closer to her face as if to inspect her for signs of a takeover. "Hello, Y/N? Are you still in there? Blink twice if I need to find an exorcist."
"Stop," she chuckles, rolling her eyes and gently pushing him away from her. "I assure you I have not been possessed," she says. "I just thought it would be fun to keep it somewhat spooky, ya know, without the jump scares."
Jongho raised an eyebrow, intrigued by her unexpected suggestion.  I guess that could work. But you have to promise me one thing," he says agreeing to it. "Remember that this was your idea. If you get scared, you can't put the blame on me."
"Deal! But if I do get scared, you have to hold my hand," she counters with a cheeky smile. "Let’s play rock, paper, scissors to see who goes first."
They both lifted their hands, "One… two… three!"
Jongho goes with paper, while Y/N picked rock.
"Ha! I win!" he cheers, clapping his hands in excitement. "Looks like I get to start. I promise the first story won’t be too scary."
"Alright," she rolled her eyes again, a grin on her face as she settles into the couch.
"A friend of mine told me this story. It really happened to him," he began, also getting cozy on the couch. "So, my friend’s dad worked as a security guard. His job was to check on old buildings to ensure they hadn’t been broken into and that no one was squatting inside. Some of these places had alarms, so he would just walk around a few times, making sure there were no one suspicious hanging around," he continues. "One of the buildings he had to check was an old maternity hospital on the outskirts of town. After being closed for years, it had reopened as a temporary doctor's office. The locals often whispered about it being haunted, claiming it felt cold even in the summer and that they heard babies crying or the sound of heels clicking down the hall," he explained, his eyes widening as he recalled the eerie details. Storytelling has always been something he's always been good at. "My friend's dad often did night security at this building. After his shift he would come home and tell my friend about what he experienced that night. My friend was so excited to hear his stories. He's really into the paranormal."
"You've told me about this friend," she says recalling the times he talked about him. "He does ghost hunting on YouTube now, right?"
"That's him," Jongho nods before continuing his story. "One night his dad promised to take him to the hospital with him. His mum reluctantly agreed but since it wasn't a school, she allowed him to go. Of course he was over the moon about it. This is his first time going to a real haunted building."
He leans forward, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper, as if the very walls of the room might be listening. This causes Y/N to instinctively lean in closer to.
"It's dark by the time they get to the old maternity hospital. My friend said he could feel the eerie feeling before he even saw the building. It sent chills down his spine. After they get out of the car, his dad hands him a flashlight, and they made their way to the entrance. The door creaks as his dad pushes it open, revealing a dark hallway that seems to stretch for miles. The air thick and heavy as they walk inside, so much so that it’s almost suffocating. My friends could feel his heart racing, both excited and terrified at the same time." His eyes gleam with mischief as he recounts the details. "They stepped inside, and then, bam!” he shouts causing Y/N to jump, “The door slammed shut behind them. My friend's dad chuckles trying to lighten the mood. He’s been there many times so he should be use to all the activity by now, but my friend could tell he was a bit on edge too.”
"What happened next?" she asks, her curiosity piqued.
"They began to walk down the corridor, making sure all the doors were locked and secure. My friend can’t shake the feeling that they’re being watched the entire time,” he replies. “They get to the room at the end of the hall and as his dad makes sure its locked, the door swings open. It was unlocked. His dad reassured him that perhaps one of the doctors had forgotten to lock it, so he closed the door, the keys clinking loudly in the stillness as he locked it. After confirming it was locked, they turn to head down another corridor, which was much shorter than the main one. But as they walk, checking the doors, the temperature drops, and the sound of babies crying fills the air. It’s a haunting sound and it sends chills down my friend's spine. He glances at his dad, who’s gone pale, his usual bravado replaced by a look of fear. He may have checked on this building so many times that he should be used to it but it still scares him."
"I would still be scared too," Y/N confesses. He nods in agreement, even though the only thing that truly frightens him is bugs. A haunted place doesn’t faze him at all. "What did they do next?" she asks.
"They kept on going," he replies, his tone growing more serious. "But with every step, the atmosphere thickened and crying grew louder and more desperate. My friend wanted to turn back, but his dad insisted they keep going, he has a job to do after all."
"That sounds terrifying," Y/N interjects, her voice barely above a whisper. "Did they find anything? Were anymore doors unlocked."
"Not at first," he says, shaking his head. "They reached the last door, and his dad paused, listening intently. The crying had stopped and it was replaced by an unsettling silence. My friend felt a knot in his stomach and heard his own voice in his head telling him to run. His dad, on the other hand, had to brave it and went to push the door open."
"What was inside?" Y/N asks, her curiosity piqued.
"I don’t know. The door was locked," he tells her before continuing with the story. “So, they end up walking back up the corridor, the eerie silence, following behind them. When they got back to the main corridor, that’s when the loud clicking of heels on the concrete floors begins and it only grows louder as the sound grows closer to them. But, it eventually stops when the sound reaches the end of the corridor and is quickly replaced with the sound of a door unlocking and the creak of the door swinging open."
"Fuck that, I'd be out of there as fast as my legs could take me," she shivers.
"My friend said the same thing. He would have bolted if he wasn't frozen in fear," he says. "His dad, though scared, walks the few feet to the door, pulls it shut and locks it again before calling out to the spirit he believes it is. 'Matron, you can't be unlocking doors that are supposed to be locked. I don't want to lose my job because someone thinks I'm not doing it properly.' he calls out to the old chief nurse, his voice trembling."
Y/N's eyes widen, captivated by the unfolding story. "Did the matron respond?"
"No. But the sound of babies crying started again," he says and shakes his head. "After making sure the door was locked once more, they bolted out of the hospital as quickly as they could. They got in the car and my friend's dad started the drive back to the next location. As they were leaving, my friend heard a voice telling him to look back, so he did."
"What did he see?" Y/N asks, her interest clearly piqued. Jongho can't help but smile at her fascination; usually, she hides behind a cushion during scary stories.
He leans in closer again, lowering his voice as if sharing a secret. "He saw a figure of a woman wearing an old nurses uniform standing in the doorway of the hospital. Her face is pale and gaunt, with eyes that seem to pierce right through him. He couldn't bring himself to look away."
Y/N's breath catches in her throat, her heart racing as she imagines the scene. "What happened next?" she urges, leaning forward, her eyes wide with anticipation.
Jongho takes a moment, savoring the suspense. "As he stared, the woman raised a hand, slowly started waving to him," he says lifting his own hand and waves it at Y/N. "As the terrified feeling inside him starts to dissipate, he couldn't stop himself from waving back to her. She was the first ghost he'd ever seen."
"Did he ever go back to the hospital?" she asks.
He shakes his head. "No, he had all the evidence he needed to believe that hospital is haunted. He didn't feel the need to go back."
“I don’t blame him. I wouldn’t go back either,” she says, moving closer to him.
“It’s your turn to tell a story,” he teases her and pulls her into his arms.
Just as she’s about to say something, the lights flicker back on. “Let's watch something instead,” she suggests picking up the remote and starts going through the movies on netflix.

movies and books from september
I just think it's a little funny that I watched everything on the left page in the same day. The second was a bit of a marathon, starting with Immaculate and The First Omen, that just continued into Over the Garden Wall (which I rewatched later on in the month) and finishing out with Saw as a palate cleanser. Also, looking over the list, Daydream really stands out here as an outlier, with everything else being somewhat spooky. I contain multitudes, I guess.
Immaculate (2024) dir. Michael Mohan ★★★1/2
The First Omen (2024) dir. Arkasha Stevenson ★★★★
Over the Garden Wall (2014) dir. Nate Cash ★★★★★
Saw (2004) dir. James Wan ★★★★★
The X-Files: Ground Zero by Kevin J. Anderson ★★★★
Daydream by Hannah Grace ★★★★1/2

Halloween Movie Marathon | Logan Howlett x Reader
It's Spooky Season and one of the your favourite things to do is what some 'Halloween-y' movies. Once October 1st rolled around, the two of you made yourselves comfy on your couch as you loaded up the first film on your list. Popcorn, snacks, your favourite candy and Logan’s favourite beer on the coffee table in front of you. Each night Logan had thought that he’d bought enough popcorn, candy and beer but each night he was proven wrong. He was glad that it was only this month that he was buying so much popcorn, candy and beer otherwise he feared he’d go bankrupt.

Having been born in the early 1800s Logan had been around for the start of cinema. At first, he’d largely ignored it. There were more important things to be doing. It would probably die like most fads did. Except this one had stuck around.
He could still remember the first time he ever stepped foot inside of a movie theatre. The thrill of watching a movie for the very first time, in a room full of others experiencing the same life altering experience, was something he hoped he would never forget.
Logan had watched a lot of movies over the decades, and centuries, since then.
He’d seen the popularity of cinema and the wonder of TV grow and shift over time. Streaming services, however, still baffled him.
You’d tried to get him to use them a bit more but he still struggled using a phone to text let alone search for a film on a laptop or TV.
Whenever the two of you sat down to watch something on Netflix or Prime or Disney you were in charge of the remote. Otherwise, it was getting thrown at the wall.
Many any innocent remote had lost their lives in your efforts to get Logan used to them.
Eventually you’d had enough of having to buy new ones.
Logan had known that you’d want to watch some horror or ‘spooky’ movies on the lead up to Halloween, you’d mentioned it enough times over the past few weeks, but he hadn’t quite known just what he was getting into when he agreed to watch them with you.
You had a list. A list.
A list filled with horror, or “Halloween-y” as you put it, movies. Some of them Logan had heard of but there were others he didn’t have a clue about. (Honestly, it was nearly all of them he was just a little embarrassed to say anything.)
Once October 1st rolled around, the two of you made yourselves comfy on your couch as you loaded up the first film on your list. Popcorn, snacks, your favourite candy and Logan’s favourite beer on the coffee table in front of you.
Other night you would take one of the DVDs from the stack by the TV in your bedroom and popped into the DVD player you’d bought from a charity shop a year ago.
Every night the two of you watched one of the movies on your list. With a few extras thrown in; Logan had been relieved when you hadn’t been able to find all the Scooby Doo films online – there were only so many films he could watch with a cartoon dog in them.
The next day you came home with a stack of new Scooby Doo DVDs you’d found whilst out shopping.
Each night Logan had thought that the two of you had bought enough popcorn, candy and beer to last a week, but each night he was proven wrong. He was glad that it was only for this one month otherwise he feared he’d go bankrupt.
Until you briefly mentioned that you couldn’t wait to do this again in December. With all the many, many Christmas films you loved. Plus, all the Christmas treats you loved too.
Logan feared he’d need to get a loan to feed your sweet tooth.
Tumblr media
The List:
Twilight
“Why the fuck are those vampires sparkly? And why the fuck are they in high school? Fucking weirdos.”
Beetlejuice
Logan had looked at you like you had three heads when you’d told him not to say it three times and then laughed like a maniac!
The Witch
“What like the Roald Dahl book?” Logan had asked, taking a swig of his beer. “No. But we should watch that too.”
Zombieland
Laughing Logan had said “Sounds like school on a Monday morning!”
Halloweentown
"Well, that was… a cute film?”
Jaws
Logan remembered watching that in the cinema. He was pretty sure he enjoyed it.
Split
"Do you think that the actor looks a bit like the Professor? Like a younger him I mean.” You asked around a mouthful of popcorn. Logan shrugged as he stole a handful of popcorn from the bowl in your lap. “Can’t say I see the resemblance.”
Carrie (the original)
“Did you know they used corn syrup for the pig’s blood?” Looking at you, one eyebrow raised, Logan asked “Do you want to make some and scare Scott with it?”
The Mummy
You’d told him that Brandon Fraser had been one of your first crushes. You’d had to tell Logan (multiple times) that you found him much sexier than Rick O’Connell. (You were only lying a little.)
Child’s Play
“This just reaffirms my belief that dolls are super creepy.” “You’re the one that wanted to watch this not me. But at least wasn’t a porcelain doll. Now, those are creepy as fuck.”
The Exorcist
Hugging a cushion to your chest as you peaked over it at the screen, Logan slowly creeped his hand up behind you before suddenly grabbing your shoulder.
Screaming you wacked him in the face with the cushion.
Alien
“First time I watched this I was shitting myself thinking the cat was going to die.”
Sweeney Todd
"Why are they singing? I thought that you said that this movie was about a guy that killed people and a woman that turned them into pies?” You rolled your eyes “Yes. But they’re singing about it.” “It seems stupid. Why would you sing about killing people instead of just killing them?” Pausing the film, you moved your head off of his shoulder and turned to him and said “Logan, please shut. It’s a musical, if you aren’t enjoying it go do something else.” “I never said that I wasn’t enjoying.” He grumbled as he pulled you back to him and pushed your head back down onto his shoulder. “It just seems a bit unrealistic is all.” “It’s a musical!”
The Addams Family
As you moved the kitchen around getting a bowl of popcorn ready, you sang the Addams Family theme tune loud and a little of key. As he watched you from where he sat on the couch, Logan grumbled to himself that “This had better not be another musical.”
Sleepy Hollow
Do you have a thing for Johnny Deep too?” “I’m surprised you know who that is, babe.”
What We Do in the Shadows
“That is the weirdest vampire film I’ve ever watched.” Logan had proclaimed, laughing, as the credits rolled.
Interview with the Vampire
“Y’know I didn’t know that they’d turned this book into a movie.” “Have you read it?” you asked still watching the screen. “Yeah, it was a’right.” “I had to study it in school. I remember getting to watch this during English, the class was divided by girls that had a crush on Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise.” “Yeah? Which side were you on?” “Antonia Banderas.” “Who?” “He plays Armand.” “Oh, right, yeah. He’s pretty hot.”
Midsommar
"That’s disgusting! Why did she put her pubes in his drink?!”
Death Becomes Her
"I don’t know who’s hotter Meryl Streep or Goldie Hawn.” “I keep forgetting that that’s Bruce Willis. He looks so different with hair.”
Scooby Doo on Zombie Island
“Scooby Doo? Really darling?” “You’re right.” You’d nodded solemnly “We should watch all the Scooby Doo movies. Especially the ones with Matthew Lillard in.”
The Rocky Horror Picture Show
“Another musical? Seriously, sweetheart?”
The Craft
“I’m pretty sure that in high school every girl wanted to be a witch after watching this film.”
Fear Street Part One 1994
Fear Street Part Two 1978
Fear Street Part Three 1666
“Don’t give me that look Logan, you can’t watch just one of these, you have to watch all three!”
The Haunted Mansion
"What are we watching tonight?" Logan asked as he moved around the couch, holding the pizza in one hand and a case of beer in the other. “The Haunted Mansion. The one with Eddie Murphy, of course.” Confused and frowning Logan asked “Eddie who?”
Scream
“The first time I watched this I had no idea who the killer was.” You said once the movie was finished “I was so surprised when it was revealed it was them two.” “Huh.” Logan said picking up the empty beer bottles on the coffee table. “I thought it was pretty obvious.” “Oh, shut up! Not all of us are hyper observant ex-super soldiers.”
Dark Shadows
“Did you watch the TV show when it came out in the 60s?” “I think I was too busy in Vietnam.” “…Oh. Right.”
Ghostbusters
“Who you gonna call?” you sang shouted in unison “GHOSTBUSTERS!”
Van Helsing
“You know the main actor looks a lot like you, babe.” You’d said holding up the DVD case to show him. “No, he doesn’t.”
Halloween
"This was the first horror I ever watched." you admitted.  "Yeah?" "Yeah. I refused to be in the house alone for a month."

It's that time of the year again! The happiest, the jolliest time of the year! Fall! October! Halloween! So, as normal, here's Mordred's Annual October Watchlist for 2024!!
Halloween Rewatch Marathon: back in 2016, or something like that, I watched every Halloween movie. But it was before I had a letterboxd account and there are newer ones I've only seen once in theaters. It seems perfectly thematic for me to make the big thing I do this Halloween season be the titular series.
Higurashi: Last year I set my sites on a lot of things, included with that was trying to watch all of Higurashi. I somewhat failed, I didn't get through the final season until it was too late. I hope to finish it this season and post my reviews from last year and this one together!
Suicide Club: Since realizing I'm a huge fan of Sion Sono's work, I've been slowly going through all his movies. Having watched Noriko's Dinner Table, I want to rewatch Suicide Club and see if my opinion changes.
The Forest of Love: Another Sion Sono movie, this one about a horrific killer. Should be pretty fucked up.
Tokyo Vampire Hotel: A TV series Sion Sono did with Amazon apparently. Has a lot of bad reviews but that kinda makes me more curious about it.
Another: Anime series. One of my favorite horrors. I rewatch it every year.
Shiki: Anime series. One of my favorite horrors. I rewatch it every year.
Perfect Blue: Famous anime horror movie. I intend to show it to my husband this year :)
Nightmare Before Christmas: Sometimes shit is just fun. I wanna have fun. Let's have fun.
Reread Another, the original novel by Yukito Ayatsuji. One of my all time favorite horror novels, in my top ten favorite books of all time. If there's enough time and I dont adhd out, I'll finally try to read that new sequel.
Reread Goth by Otsuichi. My favorite horror novel and one of my top five favorite books.
Replay Malcatras' Maiden, which if you don't know is a free horror adjacent trans puppy maid visual novel. If you don't know about it, google it and play it. :)
Ambitious as always, but this is my list for things I want to watch this Halloween season! I know I'm starting my "October Watchlist" in September, but hey, it's never too early to be spooky 💖
