A Goblin Tea Party

Scene: A Dimly Lit Glade in a Dense, Overgrown Forest

(Four goblins are seated around a rickety table adorned with mismatched tea cups and a teapot that's seen better days. The air is filled with the scent of over-steeped tea and mild trepidation.)

Gobnob: (Pouring tea, which looks suspiciously like mud) Now, remember, pinky out. That's how the fancy folk do it.

Snizzle: (Eyeing her cup suspiciously) I heard the fancy folk also drink tea that doesn't look like swamp water.

Grubwort: (Sniffing the air) Is it supposed to smell like a troll's laundry basket?

Muddles: Peace, friends! It's about ambiance, not aroma. Imagine, we are sophisticated beings partaking in high society's rituals!

Gobnob: (Grinning) Right, sophisticated! That's why I wore my best hat. (Points to a hat that appears to be made from an old boot.)

Snizzle: Sophisticated? I still have mud under my nails from yesterday's grub-digging fiesta.

Grubwort: (Takes a sip and grimaces) This tea tastes like it's been steeped in the tears of a disgruntled pixie.

Muddles: A touch of imagination, Grubwort. Imagine it's... an exotic blend from the far-off lands of... um, somewhere far-off.

Gobnob: Speaking of far-off, did anyone remember to invite the hobgoblin from the eastern marshes?

Snizzle: I thought you were going to do that!

Muddles: (Sighs) It appears our grand tea party is just us... again.

Grubwort: (Smiling) Well, at least we've got the best company. Who needs hobgoblins when you've got tea that could double as potion ingredients?

Gobnob: To us, the finest goblins in these woods!

(They all raise their cups, clinking them together, a chorus of laughter mingling with the clatter of teacups in the dim forest glade.)

~The Cemetery~

(the skeleton story, apart of my short story collection 'The Ballad of Hollowfaye', available to read on wattpad)

Everyone receives a curse at death. To be immortal forever, to move on to the afterlife, to pick up garbage eternally, it all depends on thoust own decisions and fate and whether the Goddess of Destiny put in a good word for yee or not. 

Two sisters received quite a crummy deal. Buried together hundreds of years ago were damned to return to the world of the living for only 12 hours on ONE day annually. Halloween. The day of ghosts and ghouls, and, yes, skeletons.

"Mabel... Sister..."

"Hzzzzzggh."

"Mabel!" *Wack!* "Wake up, you old bones."

"Wot!?    Wot..."

"It's Halloween, again, and the curse lives on." *sighs* "As do we."

"Wot!?" "Who are you?!" "And of what weenie curse do you speak?"

"Mabel, sister, I apologize. I forgot the worms fasted upon your brains ages ago."

"Who ARE you?"

"Stop with the yelling this instant. We reside in the same coffin, after all."

"..."

"'Tis I, your sister, Kitty."

"Whom???"

"Aye, I know this game you play and I tired of it ages ago. When this wood was still new and pliable—oh, why did we go with pine? Rots so much faster than maple. I should've known better than to listen to you, why, you've got more brains now than you had when we were alive."

"... oh yes, Kitty, it IS you. How I could forget such cordiality, I do not know."

*Gasp!*

"Pardon me, sister! But you forget that listening to you is what doomed us to our fate those many years ago."

"I BEG your pardon!"

"Do so all you'd like, but I remember the night like it was lived just yesterday. 'Dear sisters,' you'd wept to us, forgetting that Francis was a brother as you always did, 'the poison in our tea shall put us to sleep just long enough for the debt to be done away with.'"

"Well if you weren't so dreadfully thin, eating only the vegetables of your fretful garden, the poison wouldn't have killed you so."

"And it was your big bones that saved you, was it? Is that why we share the same coffin and dreadful deadless demise?"

"Don't get wise, Sister, you're beneath it."

"Fine, Kitty, you are right just as you've always been and I am wrong as I always was; 'twas the fault of my diet, not you putting thrice the recommended amount of rat poison in my Earl Grey."

"If you hadn't replaced my teaspoon with your tablespoon, the mix-up would not have happened, our deaths avoided; no thanks to your faulty ambrosia, mind you."

"Oh, AMBROSIA! The taste, the TASTE!"

"Forget it, Sister, forget it lest you remind me of its absence as well."

"Oh, stop your howling! After the maggots got your diaphragm I was sure your cries would lessen their curse upon my nerves—at least until the worms mealed upon them—alas, you still fill my stomach with sorrow!"

"Diaphragm? Nerves? Stomach? Of what do you speak, Sister, you are naught but a skeleton, before even the cloak-ed death laid a finger upon you."

"Shame! For shame, Sister! How dare you speak to me this way? You killed me, ended my life, and you still entertain yourself by haunting me in the never-ending life after. What ever happened to peace in death?"

"My dearest Mabel, the fool that uttered those words never felt the love of a sister."

"Lucky fool."

"Fool's luck."

"I shall fall back asleep to avoid the gayness of your company."

"Aye, next year?"

"If you move over, perhaps."

"..."

*sighs* "What is it, Sister?"

"We are awake only 12 horrid hours out of the year. Might you pretend you enjoy spending it with me?"

"Wasting it, you mean?"

"Sister, don't say such hurtful things!"

"Sorry, Sister, I thought the beetles ate away at your feelings a millennia ago."

"Sorely mistaken you were, Sister."

"To agree that sharing a coffin would show no problem was my only mistake."

*Gasp!* "Sister!"

"Alright, alright. Of what shall you force me to speak, much and completely against my will, mind you?"

"Tell me the story..."

"What story?"

"You know the one, Sister."

"There are many stories, infinite stories, you must be more specific."

"I remember few specificities."

"I did not realize worms could feast upon memories."

"Aye, Time, Sister, Time is the hungriest of scavengers."

"It has been some Time—too much—almost all of it."

"Too true, Sister, now back to the story."

"Of what story do you speak?"

"I miss home. Remind me of it."

"Oh, yes, now I understand you, Kitty. You want the tales, the story, the ballad of dear old Hollowfaye?"

"Yes, Sister, but make haste. Isra and his sun shall be among us soon and to the cold hands of Maeby, the Holder of Death, we shall return..."

Since this blog has become my unofficial documentation for Jar Full of Cosmos, I should probably include the first step of development which was the script. I looked at a couple dialog-free scripts to get an idea of how to do it. I'm sure there are lots of mistakes in terms of formatting and content, but it was enough to get me some storyboards and the animatic!

It's long so not sure if folks want to read it, but it's below the cut for the brave/bored:

JAR FULL OF COSMOS

INT. PEARL’S HOUSE, KITCHEN - NIGHT

We are in a warmly lit, retro-styled kitchen of PEARL. The cabinets are mint with wooden countertops. Jars, plants, utensils, and various kitchen items cover every possible surface and a pendant casts a conical beam of light over the center island where Pearl and her cat WIPPLES are working. The atmosphere is cluttered but cozy and warm.

Pearl is enraptured by a project in front of her, adding pinches of ingredients to a large wooden bowl and mixing with a wooden spoon. The countertop around her is covered in small jars of various ingredients. On the other end of the island, Wipples snoozes and purrs, his body rising and falling gently. Pearl hums absent-mindedly and her bowl bubbles.

Pearl carefully uncorks a bottle and sniffs the contents. She tentatively pours a single drop into the wooden bowl.

A billow of purple and pink sparkling smoke poofs up from the bowl, casting bright, colorful light on the environment for a moment. It reflects brightly on Pearl’s glasses. Wipples leaps from his perch with a yowl and raised fur while Pearl stands stunned with her spoon in the blast.

We are looking up from inside the bowl. The witch and cat’s faces slowly look over the brim and are lit by a colorful glow from the contents. Wipples' eyes dilate widely and Pearl cracks a smile.

We are now looking in the bowl where a gently undulating fluid contains stars and soft galaxy colors. Angelic music plays.

Pearl claps with glee, delighted at her success of creating a bowl full of cosmos. Wipples, whose eyes are still wide, reaches a paw towards the fluid but Pearl shoos it away. 

to Pearl pops a cupboard open and selects a large glass jar from a collection of various bottles and jars.

Pearl carefully tips her mixing bowl over the jar, pouring the viscous space liquid into it. As the jar fills, the angelic music gets louder.

Finally, Pearl shelves her brew. We see a few jars of other environments such as a tropical beach, desert sands, and mushroom forest. The music changes accordingly with each pass. Finally, we arrive at a blank space where Pearl places her jar of cosmos, rotating it slightly to get the position correct. 

Pearl stands for a moment with her hands on her hips, savoring her success while looking at her shelf of jars. Wipples sits on the counter gazing longingly with wide eyes at the jars. He trills, and Pearl turns and wags a finger in warning.

Pearl starts leaving the kitchen, pausing to give Wipples a scratch on the head. 

Pearl slowly lowers herself into her easy chair in the livingroom. She raises a remote and points at an old TV set which clicks to life with the press of a button. As she settles back in her chair, we return our focus to Wipples. He was watching Pearl sit, but now turns his head and looks towards the jar. His pupils dilate once again and fill with sparkles.

Wipples leaps gracefully onto the shelf, causing the jars to clink. He steps haphazardly over and around other jars until he reaches the one containing cosmos.

We see a view of Wipples’ face through the jar. His eyes are wide with fascination and reflect the stars within.

He starts bapping the jar with his paw. With each clink of claw on glass, the jar edges closer to the edge of the shelf before tipping over and crashing on the counter below. Wipples leaps and his fur poofs momentarily.

In the livingroom, Pearl leans forward in her chair and looks towards the kitchen with a concerned “eh?”

Wipples peers over the shelf to see the counter which is now covered in a puddle of cosmos. 

He tentatively dips a paw inside which makes small ripples in the reflective surface. He then steps the front half of his body through. The puddle acts as a portal and Wipples is transported into a soft, bright galaxy full of twinkling sparkles and pale yellow, cartoony stars. He meows and leaps all the way in.

EXT. COSMOS - NIGHT

Wipples swats at a few yellow stars with claws extended before focusing his eyes on one nearby. He snags it with both paws and regards it with wonder. Rearing his head back, Wipples opens his mouth wide, revealing a pink interior a white teeth. As his mouth chomps on the star, a cane appears from the portal off-screen and snags his collar. Wipples yowls as he is suddenly yanked backwards, leaving the star spinning with a bite taken out.

INT. PEARL’S HOUSE, KITCHEN - NIGHT

Pearl stands holding a rag in a hand on her hip and the cane aloft with Wipples dangling by his collar. He hangs with paws tucked in, looking guilty, but with cheeks puffed out. He smiles sheepishly around his full mouth, attempting to look contrite.

Pearl turns her attention to the mess on the counter and begins wiping it with the rag. On the counter behind her, Wipples visibly swallows. 

INT. PEARL’S HOUSE, BEDROOM - NIGHT

Pearl lays in her bed asleep in a nightgown and nightcap. She is propped up on pillows, laying on her back, and snoring softly.  A paned window backlights the scene with sheer curtains casting soft shadows. The bedroom is quaintly decorated, although not much detail is visible in the low lighting. 

Wipples lays curled into a ball on Pearl’s belly which softly rises and falls with her breath. The scene is peaceful and quiet.  Suddenly, Wipples opens his eyes wide and raises his head. His eyes are now the color of the cosmos, complete with sparkling stars, and cast a pink and purple glow around him. Angelic music fills the room once again.

I can't believe Ink and Intrigue is 300k words! It's actually upwards of 375k words including repeated text (much of which still has to be edited for different situations). I meant to write it much shorter, but I accidentally wrote a whole extra chapter during beta testing and added to all the paths.

There are so many gems to uncover in this game!

This is a long, effective file that uses actually good hypnotic techniques and manages to set up and reinforce the idea of removing unhelpful inhibitions. I can actually say, for the first time in a while, that I've felt its effects after the file ended, and even after sleeping. I've been in a great state of mind all day.

As always, read all the tags and description. There is also a number of different options for this file. I used the submission-based long induction. Unless you protest to either of those things, I suggest that one.

The last time I recommended Lilith files, I said she's a bit "much", which I do think is true, but I think I've decided now that she commits so hard to this sort of performed speaking style with complex sound design that it works in her favor instead of taking me out of it.
