Caesarea Maritima's Role in the Mediterranean Trade
Caesarea Maritima was located on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea. Built from the ground up in 22-10 BCE by Rome's client king, Herod the Great (r. 37-4 BCE), its location in relation to ship traffic and proximity to historical trade routes indicates a purposeful plan to capture income, making Caesarea a commercial gateway to the West.

Major Players
The context for Caesarea's existence lies in Rome's rivalry with Parthia: Rome's ablest competitor. With the defeat at the Battle of Carrhae, 53 BCE, and retreat from Media in 36 BCE, the failure to take Parthia's lucrative northern silk routes through Mesopotamia caused Rome to sue for peace in 20 BCE. As a result, Rome's efforts to round out its dominance in the Mediterranean Sea and the Near East took on a commercial tone. In an attempt to control the lucrative southern east/west trade routes through Arabia and the Red Sea, Caesarea would serve as the springboard. As a key hub in the Eastern trade network of ancient Rome, Caesarea's connections to major players in the early centuries of the first millennium would include Gaza, Petra, Sidon, Tyre, Alexandria, and consumer cities like Bostra. Further afield were the commercial centers of Antioch and Patara.
As a major commercial center in the northern areas of the Mediterranean, Antioch benefited from its location at the western terminus of the Silk Road of Mesopotamia. Besides being a major center of wine and olive oil production and the fulling of cloth products, Antioch played a major role in the distribution of silk from China, lapis lazuli from ancient Afghanistan, dye-works from the Levant, and weaved silk from Damascus.
West of Antioch, on the southern coast of Anatolia (modern-day Turkey), was the coastal city of Patara, providing export service. As evidence for the traditional production of agricultural goods and animal husbandry in Anatolia reaches back to the first centuries of the 2nd millennium BCE, the production of Anatolian copper, gold, silver, iron, and lead was documented by Pliny and Strabo. As James Muhly adds:
Anatolia is a land blessed with abundant natural resources, including a wealth of mineral deposits and abundant forests, the two elements necessary for a major metal industry. Recent calculations provide the following figures: 415 major copper-rich zones, more than 136 complex lead-zinc-copper ore deposits, and almost 200 silver-lead deposits, as well as numerous deposits of gold, zinc, antimony, arsenic, and iron. (858-59)
Modern surveys also confirm that, from 3000 BCE to the Ottoman period, Anatolia was an important producer of copper and possibly tin, essential ingredients of bronze.
Then, sharing the eastern coast of the Mediterranean are the two Phoenician city-states of Sidon and Tyre. As Caesarea was built over the ruins of Straton's Tower - named after King Straton I (r. 365-352 BCE) of Sidon - Strabo reports it had its own "station for vessels" (16.2.27). With its location in the midst of shipping and trade routes north of Alexandria and 120 km between Gaza and Sidon, Straton's Tower reflects Sidon's scale of commercial influence. Once providing ships and goods for Persia, Sidon was also an important manufacturer of luxury goods such as glass, dyes, and embroidered garments. Just south of Sidon, the island of Tyre was also a commercial powerhouse. Besides its famous purple-dyed cloth, according to the biblical account in 1 Kings 7:13-45, Solomon sought help from Tyre to manufacture and furnish bronze finished products for the temple.
Roman Rule in the Levant, c. 200 CE
Simeon Netchev (CC BY-NC-ND)
Though their spheres of commercial influence were reduced with the control of the Phoenician coast by the Seleucid Empire (312-63 BCE), then by the Romans, Sidon, and Tyre would continue to play a part in the overall network of trade in the Eastern Mediterranean. Conversely, while Tyre and Sidon were known for their finished products, west of the Nile on the northern coast of Africa, Alexandria shipped goods from Egypt. Besides the bulk manufacturing and export of textiles and papyrus, with Rome as its main consumer, Egypt commonly shipped its oil and grain products aboard the famous Alexandrian ships. One such ship, the Isis, as described by Lucian, had a length of 55 meters (180 ft) and a beam of 14 meters (45 ft); with a cargo hold depth of 13.5 meters (44 ft), it could carry 1200 tons of product.
Finally, within Caesarea's direct orbit were the important cities of Gaza, Petra, and Bostra. Gaza served as a conduit to Western markets, receiving goods from Africa, Arabia, India, and Indonesia, the most lucrative of which would have been pepper and frankincense. Gaza was one of the first cities to come under Caesarea's direct control when Augustus (r. 31 BCE to 14 CE) granted it to Herod in 30 BCE. However, as the Nabateans of Petra were major traders and middlemen for goods coming from the East through Arabia and the Red Sea by way of their port Leuce, Roman interest in Gaza, Petra, and Red Sea connections would be fully realized when the Roman emperor Trajan (r. 98-117 CE) annexed the Nabatean Kingdom as the Provincia Arabia in 106 CE. In addition, important consumer cities within Caesarea's regional neighborhood would include Jerusalem, Samaria, and Bostra. For Rome – perhaps to cut out Nabatean middlemen – Bostra's commercial importance would be elevated when it later usurped Petra as the trading center of the region to become the Roman capital of Arabia, after which a road was quickly constructed to connect Bostra to the Red Sea.

See I just don't think Dawntrail particularly pulls its punches on the horrors of the Alexandrian invasion--not when the whole aesthetic of Heritage Found is designed to be dark and sinister, not when the raid series seems to be foreshadowing the end of the soul economy, not when all the Scions and Wuk Lamat have dialogue about how disturbing they find it, and not when shutting down Living Memory is a major plot point, a firm narrative condemnation of the whole enterprise. It's certainly fair to wish that, for example, Erenville had gotten more screentime, but his whole journey of learning the awful truth about his mother and his home is very much presented as one of dawning horror.
No, what Dawntrail actually pulls its punches on, and hard, is the deleterious effects of foreign and particularly Sharlayan influences on Turali cultures and ways of life. This I think is why why everything in Shaaloani immediately rubbed me the wrong way, even before I'd seen the Alexandria plot unfold. Even without explicit colonization, we see how outside influence and the demand for ceruleum has changed the very landscape of Xak Tural, forced its indigenous cultures to the outskirts. And yet Shaaloani refuses to commit to its own premise in any meaningful way. It can't even commit to the shallow conceit of the Wild West, and thus we get the impossibly stupid scenario of cowboys dueling with rubber bullets.
And then the dome appears: an eerie, otherworldly threat. The invaders from another world. Don't worry about the effects of ceruleum mining on the local wildlife. Don't worry about what communities these mining towns have replaced and displaced. Don't question the decision to blend an explicitly colonial American culture with indigenous-inspired names; don't ask whether "Old West but no colonialism, really, we promise" even makes sense as a premise. Don't worry about it. The real enemies are over there, in the cyberpunk dystopia.
In light of this sort of "no, really, look over there!" storytelling, other details that might otherwise have felt innoccuous enough become suspect to me: Ketenramm as the Good Explorer who has integrated himself into Turali culture and is BFFs with the Dawnservant and would never do a colonialism. The Shetona character from one of the role quests whose life is changed by learning that spectacles are a thing because apparently it's only in Tural that no one has invented them. The explanation for aetherytes existing in Tural--a necessity for gameplay reason, but to make them a Sharlayan export rather than having the Turali simply have invented their own is a choice that was made. The creators clearly wanted to draw from real world influences, cultures, and history, but also chose to stop short of examining the implications of those influences in any areas where it might make the familiar nations of our favorite characters culpable.
I loved Dawntrail and still have great affection for it for many reasons, but imo Shaaloani is the real weak link, the most obvious example of a desire to draw from real world influences while avoiding their implications, a glaring monument to questions the story declines to ask.

Channels identified with the Shia axis:
The Turkish cargo ship Hatay left Turkey for Alexandria, Egypt, turned off its signal and later appeared docked in the port of Haifa.
According to these channels, there is a gap between Erdogan's announcements about the stopping of exporting of goods to Israel and what is actually happening...
Does this mean that the Turkish ship has now entered the "blacklist" of the Houthis? And that of Hezbollah, following Nasrallah's threats in his last speech?

This is the rough rough rough idea of a theme for Alexandria Rowan Renshaw from the Asterion trilogy by Sam Farren. She is one of my favorite characters and her characterization is INCREDIBLY strong, so I've been anxious about starting her theme.
I learned the 3rd movement of the Sonata Pathetique as a kid and I think the beginning of this was inspired a lot by that. I know I want there to be a time signature change into a more romantic segment as well, so I tried that, but it'll definitely be tricky getting the transition to feel smooth
Oh yeah and I didn't actually want the finished thing to be in E minor necessarily but that's how it popped into my head. I'll probably mess w the transpose options later...
I wrote this in Musescore 4 and exported it from there, so it's just using whatever their stock plugins are. I'll move it into the DAW when it's a little more thoroughly composed. I like being able to see the notes in front of me when writing harmonies.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., weighed in on President Donald Trump's ongoing tariff feud with Colombian President Gustavo Petro – but not every social media user bought her comments.
The spat between Trump and Petro began when the Colombian leader refused to accept two deportation flights over the weekend, prompting Trump to unleash retaliatory measures. Both world leaders threatening to raise tariffs on imported products by 25% to 50%, and Trump ordered a travel ban and visa revocations for all Colombian government officials.
"I was just informed that two repatriation flights from the United States, with a large number of Illegal Criminals, were not allowed to land in Colombia," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "This order was given by Colombia’s Socialist President Gustavo Petro, who is already very unpopular amongst his people."
"Petro’s denial of these flights has jeopardized the National Security and Public Safety of the United States, so I have directed my Administration to immediately take the following urgent and decisive retaliatory measures."
In an X post on Sunday, Ocasio-Cortez insisted that American consumers are the only party that pay tariffs.
READ ON THE FOX NEWS APP
"To ‘punish’ Colombia, Trump is about to make every American pay even more for coffee," the New York congresswoman said in a post. "Remember: WE pay the tariffs, not Colombia."
"Trump is all about making inflation WORSE for working class Americans, not better," she added. "He’s lining the pockets of himself and the billionaire class."
Petro appeared to be a fan of AOC's post, reposting it on his own X account.
While tariffs do have the potential to inflate prices, the importer, which is the company or entity bringing the goods into the U.S., will pay the actual tariff to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
But inflated prices are not guaranteed – sometimes, tariffs can reduce the world price of an object as suppliers rush to retain access to the large U.S. market. It is possible that coffee suppliers in different countries, such as Vietnam and Brazil – which produce more coffee than Colombia – would lower or maintain their prices.
Ocasio-Cortez's tweet racked up over 47,000 likes from supporters as of 8 p.m., but received scorn from Trump supporters and tariff advocates.
"World record. 35 minutes and the tweet already aged like hot milk," the social media account Catturd wrote, referencing Petro's immediate offer to transport Colombian migrants on his presidential plane.
"Who wants to tell her that there are other countries that export coffee, not just Columbia," California State Assembly Bill Essayli wrote.
Conservative commentator John Cardillo echoed Essayli's sentiment, suggesting that the South American country "should take their illegal aliens back."
"Plenty of other nations grow coffee beans," Cardillo wrote on X. "We can buy the coffee from them."
Activist Adam Lowisz responded to Ocasio-Cortez by insisting that the Democratic politician "doesn't understand how tariffs work."
"Coffee from Colombia will increase in price, so we will purchase coffee from suppliers in other countries who do take back their illegals," the conservative X user wrote. "Businesses will hesitate to invest in Colombia any further if they continue to be bad actors."
Fox News Digital reached out to Ocasio-Cortez's office for additional comment.

i take it this is the neurodivergent side of the internet, and so i feel it a safe place to put my rant about the library of Alexandria or rather more specifically the miss-information surrounding it. (please don’t take everything i say to be 100% accurate i am but a humble person with adhd and bad memory so ill try my best but please look into it yourself more if you want a more trusted source)
to put it plain and simple it DID NOT BURN DOWN. i cannot stress that enough. and no i do not also believe in aliens and that the world is flat, im not a conspiracy theorist im right, it doesn’t take much looking into the history to find this, many books and credible sources state as much.
there were two library’s for starters, one that was used as a place for all kinds of smart people things like philosophy, maths, and mechanics. the main library, the one everyone knows of and refers to when they bring it up, was the public library.
the library itself was built to be, and listen carefully here, the biggest collection of first edition writings in the world. the key term there being first edition. so what that means is that even if the library had burnt down (which it didn’t) it wouldn’t have mattered in the grand scheme of things anyway. the way they went about gathering books, scrolls, and tablets for the library was by sending out messages asking people to bring their first editions to alexandria, where they would copy these editions and give the copy’s back to the owners, along with some money as a thank you, or something of the sort.
but again going back to the burning, usually when people talk of this they’re referencing when ceaser supposedly “burnt down part of the library during a civil war”. to give more context going into this part you should know that some sources place the library as being part of the pharos palace, and therefor being very far from the docks. what happened with ceaser is that during the war he set fire to the boats (for what reason i truly cannot remember off the top of my head but trust that he did have one) the fire then spread across the docks and reached into the neighbouring buildings and houses. but as i have said the library was far from the docks and was therefor untouched during the blaze, as it was put out long before it would have reached the palace. the confusion is believed to have come from records of books that were stored in the dock houses being destroyed in this fire, either or books that were burnt in the near by houses.
all that being said, after the date at which this burning takes place there are still records of people going and visiting the library, which had it been burnt down would not have been possible.
there are many other instances and things that happened surrounding the library, all very interesting i assure you, the rivalry it had with the library of pergamon which lead to the banning of papyrus exports to pergamon, and therefor causing the creation of parchment, being one of them. if you want some places to find more then both kaz rowes video on the library, and a short book called very fittingly, the library of alexandria and the library of pergamon by charles river editors ((?)that is the author name given i swear) are both things i thoroughly enjoyed, and feel give great insight to the topic.
if i am in fact wrong about anything please do correct me :)

Along the Outer Wall Clip Studio Paint Pro 8.5 Hours
Worked on this piece as a cover art concept for Crystal Heart Act 1. This piece depicts a scene early in Act 1, where Sorochi and Aurora are leading Maki into Alexandria via a small path along the cliffside.
Played with some new line brushes for the main trio and a whole slew of textures, landscape brushes, and lighting effects. Hope you all enjoy! I also exported my first ever timelapse, so I will be posting that soon as well!

One theme that was very prominent in Chile, and also came up in Brazil and Colombia, is how deep the polarization is, especially when it comes to media and how that is influencing the current political dynamics. The US far right and fascist movements have been working extremely hard to export many of their tactics and goals throughout Latin America. We’ve seen it in Brazil, famously, with Bolsonaro and the January 8 attack on their capital. But in Chile, this is also very prevalent. One of the ways we are seeing this is a desire to erase history. There’s an enormous movement to try to erase what happened with the coup overthrowing Salvador Allende’s government — to portray coup as almost sympathetic, as though this was a government that had it coming — which is why our call for the United States to declassify many of the documents regarding its involvement in the coup are so important. For the United States to be able to declassify this information, to say that there was external involvement, that this is something that happened and was incredibly unjust — it can’t be understated how important that would be for the Chilean people as well as the hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people impacted by having a family member lost or missing or tortured during the Pinochet regime.

It's a bright sunny day (maybe???) and Egyptians sailors come across a shipwreck in the Red Sea. There is only one survivor. DUN. DUN. DUNNNNNNNNN. It is an Indian man. NAAAAAAAAAAAAANIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII? The Egyptians took him to the king's court in Alexandria.
The Indian sailor soon learned to speak Greek and offered his services by offering to help guide Egyptians ships to India -- good idea to the king, who commanded Eudoxus of Cyzicus- a greek sailor and trader.
The Indian sailor taught Eudoxus (say that 10 times fast...don't, I already hate typing it) the "secrets" of sailing using Indian monsoon winds and their patterns/directions in summer and winter and as you can imagine - kerboom. Egyptian and Indian maritime trade routes established. Eventually land routes followed and were developed from places such as Anatolia - watch towers began to pop up along the way, eventually Roman soldiers guarding ways.
Because bandits were a thing. So, what did India trade? Well, so damn much. Silverware, printed clothes, perfumes/scented oils, spices. Ice. Yes, mountain ice. Salts. Gems. Everything. And this trade benefitted India FAR more than the countries coming to it. Also coral. Yeah, that wasn't just for 2000's teens wearing it in necklaces. If you know...you know. Also, animals. There was a huge "Exotic" animal trade as well - tigers, rhinos, serpents were exported.

Rudolf Hess
Rudolf Hess (1894-1987) was deputy leader of the German Nazi Party and a key figure in the fascist regime of Adolf Hitler (1889-1945) until his bizarre decision in 1941 to fly to Scotland. Hess believed he could persuade Britain to withdraw from the Second World War (1939-45), which would allow Germany to concentrate on fighting the USSR.
Hess's diplomatic overtures were dismissed as nonsense by both the British government and Hitler. Hess had acted without Hitler's blessing, and he was shunned as a lunatic. Hess remained a prisoner, first in Britain and then, after he was found guilty at the Nuremberg Trials, in Germany. He committed suicide at the age of 93, although his physical frailty led to some speculation as to just how he had managed to hang himself in the garden of Spandau prison.
Early Life
Rudolf Richard Hess was born in Alexandria, Egypt, on 26 April 1894. Rudolf's father owned a successful export company in the port city, but he insisted his son study in Germany from the age of 14. Rudolf then worked in his father's business until the outbreak of the First World War (1914-18) when he enlisted as a volunteer. Hess joined the same regiment in the Bavarian army that Adolf Hitler served in, the 1st Bavarian Infantry Regiment. He won his commission, the rank of lieutenant, but after being twice wounded and winning the Iron Cross Second Class medal, he decided to join the German Air Force, although the war ended just a few months later.
Hess moved to Munich, where he studied history, economics, and politics at the city's university. Although he never completed his degree, Hess did come under the spell of the influential professor of geopolitics, Karl Haushofer. In post-war Germany, the politics of the Weimar Republic, as it was then called, was volatile. Hess blamed the socialist regime for Germany's economic woes, and he sought a radical change to German politics. Hess "became a member of the Freikorps Epp and participated in the liberation of Munich from communist revolutionaries in the spring of 1919" (Gellately, 62). Hess then joined the fascist National Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP or Nazi Party for short), which was founded in 1920 as the German Workers' Party. Hess joined the party in the summer of 1920.
