This is the rough rough rough idea of a theme for Alexandria Rowan Renshaw from the Asterion trilogy by Sam Farren. She is one of my favorite characters and her characterization is INCREDIBLY strong, so I've been anxious about starting her theme.
I learned the 3rd movement of the Sonata Pathetique as a kid and I think the beginning of this was inspired a lot by that. I know I want there to be a time signature change into a more romantic segment as well, so I tried that, but it'll definitely be tricky getting the transition to feel smooth
Oh yeah and I didn't actually want the finished thing to be in E minor necessarily but that's how it popped into my head. I'll probably mess w the transpose options later...
I wrote this in Musescore 4 and exported it from there, so it's just using whatever their stock plugins are. I'll move it into the DAW when it's a little more thoroughly composed. I like being able to see the notes in front of me when writing harmonies.

Dearest Gentle Reader - out now!
Read Chapter 1 on AO3
Story summary: By day, Nesta Archeron is a washed-up old maid. By night, she's London's most notorious gossip writer: Lady Evergreen. But when she's forced to spend the season living with Cassian - and only Cassian - keeping the two personas separate becomes more and more difficult. Despite their fraught past, she must contend with her rising attraction to Cassian - and mysterious letters from the anonymous Sparrowhawk, who seems to see straight into her soul.
Not only that, but the sudden arrival of Princess Briallyn, a Prussian beauty with her eyes set on Cassian, threatens to throw yet another spanner into the works. In a world full of secrets, lies, and scandal, Nesta must find the truth - and, above all, be honest with herself.
Chapter summary: Nesta is forced to move in with Cassian, and meets an interesting woman at Presentation.
Snippet:
“And how did you deal with that, Cassian? Hm?” Cold fire surged through her veins, ice crackling over them.
He closed his eyes for a second, as if willing himself strength. “What I said—what I did—it was wrong. It was ill-judged. I’ve told you that a thousand times—”
“And I’ve told you a thousand times that I don’t care,” Nesta snarled. Seizing the box from the table, she shoved it into his chest, forcing him to straighten up to take it and all but pushing him away. He took a deliberate step back, the dizzying heat of him lessening. “Take the stupid jewels and go. They’re all ugly anyway.”
“Fine,” he snapped.
“Fine!”
“Fine!” He backed towards the door.
Unable to let him have the last word, Nesta added, “I hope your partner turns your toes black-and-blue tonight.”
“At least somebody will ask me to dance,” he retorted. “At least I don’t have to sit at the spinster’s tables alone because I’ve alienated anyone that might call me friend—”
She flung a hairbrush at him, missing by a hair’s breadth; it cracked against the doorframe and clattered to the floor, leaving an ugly dent in the wood. “You missed,” he said snidely.
“I won’t next time!”

draws lineups of my zelda trio over and over until i like all their designs together yippee
ID: first image is the aforementioned lineup of my Ganon, Zelda and Link in a chibi style. Ganon is younger than the canon incarnations and holding up a hand supporting some kind of dark magic. He wears red and black mages robes with gold trim, and wears a charm which matches one Zelda wears. Zelda has short hair, decked out gold armor on only one of her arms, and has the Master Sword at her waist. Link is playing a bright blue ocarina and wears a deep blue scarf.
Bottom three images are Character Inspiration memes, one for each of the trio, each image showing six characters which inspired or are in some notable way similar to them. Ganons has Sparrowhawk from the Earthsea Cycle, Terra Kingdom Hearts, Tatsuya Persona 2, Lyon Fire Emblem 8, Brain Kingdom Hearts, and Soma Cruz from Castlevania. Zelda’s shows Tetra from Wind Waker, Laios from Dungeon Meshi, Vivi from One Piece, Hamuko Persona 3, Garnet Final Fantasy 9, and Celica Fire Emblem 15. Links has Twilight Princess (manga) Link, Dizzy from Guilty Gear, Ventus Kingdom Hearts, Ashitaka from Princess Mononoke, highly accessorized original Link, and Kris Deltarune. hope this helps! end ID

I suppose I already broke my promise because the two anime movies I watched tonight were both Studio Ghibli films. Though they are two I have never seen before. Tales from Earthsea (2006) and The Tale of Princess Kaguya (2013) are at least two of the lesser known Ghibli films. Perhaps because the actual movies have been somewhat overshadowed by behind the scenes conflict, or because they weren’t directed by Hayao Mayazaki. Their lesser popularity is a shame because they are both strong examples of master storytelling and animation.
As a fan of Le Guin’s Earthsea novels I did genuinely enjoy the little slice of her world that Goro Mayazaki brought to life. Though this film is perhaps not quite as warm and whimsical as some of his father’s films, Earthsea still very much feels like a Ghibli movie in all the best ways. Even though this might not look and feel exactly like the Earthsea I know, I got a chill when Ged introduced himself as Sparrowhawk and loved all the references to the books that hinted we were dealing with a world much larger and complex than the little window we are given through the runtime of the movie.
On the other hand, Princess Kaguya’s stylistic animation is a refreshing take on the traditional Japanese folktale. Despite not looking like some of the other more popular Ghibli films its magical world and eclectic cast of characters fit in perfectly with the type of fantastical storytelling the studio has become so beloved for. I know that Kaguya is not the only Ghibli film that branches away from the studio’s traditional style, but it is the first I have had the pleasure of seeing and am glad I had the chance to.

In the Heart of Winter
Chapter 2
The Lorcains only had to wait a matter of minutes before another royal house arrived holding banners of a white eagle holding a rose in one claw and a trout in the other on a blue field. House Nevrakis were the rulers of Thilux, the summer kingdom. Strong allies to the Lorcains, the Nevrakis were like a second family to the Lorcain children, and it served the other way with the Nevrakis children.
Siobhan held them in high regard, as they had never been anything but kind to her and her family. She was closer to Iris Nevrakis, the oldest of the summer brood, than she was to Aislinn. Countless letters had been sent between the pair, usually via one of the Nevrakis raptors.
Siobhan put an arm around Seoras' shoulders. "It's House Nevrakis. I think you'll like them" she told him.
"Think so?" Seoras looked up at her.
His older sister smiled. "I'm sure of it. Demetrius and papa were best friends. They grew up together. He may as well be our uncle".
"Think they'll like me? Like Ronan?"
"I believe so. They're really easy going".
Overhead flew the pride of House Nevrakis: Their trained raptors, birds of prey that had helped turned the tide in the War of Man and Magic. They were a signature in Iorera, and House Nevrakis adored these feathered, fierce creatures. Among them was a golden eagle named Nike, who was trained by Demetrius Nevrakis, king of Thilux and Lord of Summer. Close to her was a kestrel named Ioanna. If memory served Siobhan right, she was trained by Maia Nevrakis, Demetrius' wife and the lady of Summer. Behind them was a bird the autumn princess knew well: A barn owl named Vassilios, who was trained by Iris Nevrakis. He had delivered their messages back and forth for a while now, but Siobhan hadn't heard from Iris in a few months. He was followed by a female osprey named Klymene, a male sparrowhawk named Alekos, and a male peregrine falcon named Lambros. Siobhan wasn't too certain on the trainer of these birds. The other kids of House Nevrakis sure but she wasn't sure of specifics. She watched as the birds landed in the trees close by, watching their family roll in.
The Nevrakis were an eccectric lot, laid back and fun loving. It was said they were descended from the ancient merfolk rather than the earliest elves that served the Fae millenias ago. They loved the sea and the wind alike, and it was even said that summer elves even grew scales on their bodies as they aged. Siobhan had even read about a rare bunch actually being born with finned tails and webbing between fingers and toes.
They rolled up in beautiful carriages made from what appeared to be giant pearls. The windows and doors were lined in gold shaped to look like ocean waves. The driver and footman were dressed in the sky blue on the house's banners. The horses that pulled the carriages were silver furred, and their harnesses were made from gold and decorated with large sapphires. The Nevrakis were the wealthiest family in Iorera, and they weren't afraid to show it.
The carriage stopped and the footman stepped to the door to open it, but let out a rather comical yell of surprise when one of the riders opened it first, nearly knocking the poor man to the ground. Out of the carriage first was a short, pudgy man with a bald round head. His eyebrows were black and bushy, his dark green eyes bright with happiness. His beard was thick but nice and cleanly kept. His face was freckled and with a slightly hooked nose. His thin lips were curled into a delighted and joyous smile. This was Demetrius Nevrakis, the wealthiest man in Iorera.
"He's gotten rounder" Aislinn noted aloud.
Siobhan glanced at her from Seoras' side. "Hey, Aislinn, can you go five minutes without being a total bi-"
"Siobhan Aithnea Lorcain! Mind your words!" Neassa glared at her sharply.
"She's the one calling the lord of summer fat!"
"It was simply an observation Siobhan. Contain the calamity of your mammaries".
"Yeah a bitchy one" Ronan replied not looking at the eldest Lorcain.
Aislinn gasped as if Ronan had offended her. "Seoras, I swear if you don't muzzle that thing-"
"Not a thing!" Seoras told her through gritted teeth, his tone icy.
"Guys!" Seoc rolled his eyes, "It's like I'm getting babysitting except I'm not getting paid..."
The siblings fell into a heated quiet as Demetrius helped his beloved wife, Maia, out of the carriage. Maia Nevrakis was a beautiful elf, every inch of her radiated nobility. Like her husband, she was short, but carried herself remarkably well. Maia had long chocolate brown hair that cascaded down her back elegantly. Her eyes were a deep emerald, a signature of summer elves. Across her neck was a tattoo of a budding tree branch, the buds lavender across her pale throat. She wore a long silk gown of lilac, which matched the flowery headdress she wore. The headdress was decorated with ebony dyed antlers, giving Maia the appearance of having stag horned crown. Maia happily took a look at the Lorcains, her lovely lips a soft shade of magenta.
"Oh look at you all, it's been so long!" Maia came over to them excitedly and hugged the Lorcians until she got to Seoras, "I haven't seen you since you were a tiny thing. Are hugs okay?" she asked the autumn prince.
Seoras shook his head. "No, sorry".
"Oh no need to apologize dear. I understand perfectly. Not everyone likes hugs and close contact. My younger daughter's the same way. It's why I asked". Maia smiled kindly.
"I like hugs!" Ronan spoke out.
Maia chuckled. "Awww who's this little fellow?"
"Ronan. I made him" Seoras told her.
"Well he's a delightful little construct. It's nice to meet you, Ronan".
"Same to you, gorgeous".
Maia blinked and then laughed a bit. "A little flirt I see".
"And don't ya forget it!"
The summer lady bowed her head and turned to Neassa. Her face went from warm and welcome to somber and sympathetic. She took the queen's hands gently.
"And how are you, your grace?"
"None of that now, sister. I've been well, attempting to keep my family and the continent together as best I can".
"You're doing remarkably. I promise you, Alasdair would be proud of the work you've done".
"I certainly hope so, Maia".
One by one the four Nevrakis children came out of the carriage in order of their birth, lining in front of the Lorcains. Siobhan smiled, stealing a glance at Iris.
Iris smiled back, bowing her head. The eldest of the four, Iris was tall and slender with a slight build. her clothing was lolita styled, complete with an interesting mix of black, light blushing pink, and lilac purple. The lighter colors clashed with the deep black of her wild hair, which was highlighted with ash brown streaks and kept in high pigtails. Her bangs were straight and a tad choppy. In front of each pigtail was a small bow of light blue with soft lavender stripes. Iris had her mother's emerald eyes, though they were encompassed and contained by thick rimmed circular black glasses. On her left shoulder was a tiny frilled lizard named Xene. His black and silver scales shined in the sunlight as his claws dug into the fabric of Iris' shirt. Like Ronan was for Seoras, Xene was Iris' crowning achievement. The result of many years of studying reptilian genetics. It showed the summer princess' remarkable intelligence despite her eccentric appearance and demeanor.
Iris bowed to Neassa. "Your grace" she smiled warmly.
Neassa nodded. "Princess Iris, an interesting color combination and style. I take it you made this?"
"I did, thank you".
"You look wonderful. I take it then that your business is going well?"
"Oh very much so, your grace. In fact if you andd his grace Daimon would permit me, I would like to design and put together everyone's wedding attire" Iris proposed.
Behind her veil, Neassa smiled kindly. "We in House Lorcain would be honored if you did so".
Iris smiled to herself as the queen moved to her younger brother, Leonidas. Known to his family as Leo, Lenoidas Nevrakis was his mother's son through and through. He had her eyes and chocolate brown hair. He also wore an antlered headdress, though his were silver coated, shining in the sunlight. On either side of his neck, he had red roses tattooed. His beard was getting a bit long, his eyebrows bushy like his father's. On his right cheek, most notably, were a pair of slash scars he received from a fight with the youngest member of House Seiya, the spring rulers in Xisha. As for his clothing, he wore dull earth tones of mostly green and brown. Like Seoc, Leo was an archer of the finest calibur. He bowed before the queen of Autumn.
"Your highness" he greeted her with a respectful tone, "May the day bring great fortune to you and yours".
Neassa nodded in kind. "Same with you, Leonidas. Formal as always".
"Respectful your grace, and you're worthy of every ounce of it" Leonidas replied.
The queen moved on to the next sibling, another girl named Reah. Like Neassa, Maia had her children in a similar order: Daughter, son, daughter, and another son. Soft spoken and mousey, Reah Nevrakis reminded the queen of her own son, Seoras. She had long, light brown hair that trailed down to her waist. Two braids were made at the fronts of her shoulders. Her bright green eyes were polished peridots. Her thin lips were painted a soft pink-gray color, and on her head she wore a bronze and red jeweled circlet that was decorated with dyed red ram horns on either side of her head. Around her neck was a pink and green jeweled spider web like necklace. As for her attire, she wore a simple but lovely red colored toga style gown.
Neassa looked at the girl intrigued. "You wear my colors, princess".
"The colors of my house, majesty".
"If the day goes well".
The two bowed respectfully before Neassa moved on to the next aqnd last sibling. The boyishly charming Prince Zoilos.
Zoilos bowed. "Your majesty"
Neassa nodded as she looked him over. "Prince Zoilos. I see you've grown well".
If one didn't know any better, they'd think Zoilos and Reah were twins. Their eyes were similar, as was their hair color. The prince's was more wild and rebellious. His face was boyish and kind. He was younger than Reah, but he was taller than her. He also wore red and gold, perhaps also wanting to join House Lorcain. Zoilos was a trained speaqrmaster, even impressing House Seiya with his skills.
"You too wear my family's colors" the veiled queen noted with a slight smile.
"A show of respect, your highness, and support. I...I hope the day is good" he seemed shy but sweet.
Siobhan smiled a bit at that, thinking he would make a great partner for anyone.
"So...anyone heard anything from the other two?" Demetrius asked.
"No one's heard from House Eronen in months. No news out of Zaigary either" Neassa answered with a slightly concerned tone.
Reah fidgeted with her necklace, mumbling something Siobhan couldn't quite pick up. Something about "ice on fire, blood on the snow" or other. The autumn princess was suspicious.
"I'm sure they're fine" Maia said, "Kalervo and Marianna have always been the private sort. I'd swear it's a winter elf thing".
It wasn't a dishonest statement. House Eronen ruled the winter kingdom of Zaigary for the last four thousand years, since the rebellion against the fae. It was, in fact, originally decided that House Eronen would rule Iorera first. However, Alrik Eronen, their ancestor, believed that Iorera wasn't ready for a one thousand year winter. With that decided, it was only natural that a much more pleasant Reign would take control first.
Well...supposedly pleasant.
Siobhan turned her head as another entourage started to roll in. House Seiya were the rulers of the Spring Court in Xisha. A tightly knit family, House Seiya bore banners in the colors of purple, red, and green. It featured a red poppy on a green field with purple sideways raindrops between the poppy's petals.
Siobhan squinted in disgust. Last she had seen the Seiya banners, it was a red rose, not a poppy. The rulers of House Nevrakis looked utterly offended. Maia let out a soft quiet gasp, and Demetrius, a normally calm and collected elf, looked ready to kill. Neassa took Maia's hand and looked at Demetrius.
"Le'ts not make a scene, please" she pleaded.
The spring entourage stopped, one of the carriages a a well polished cherrywood color with red frames. The second one appeared to be an older one, a little more run down and faded. If one didn't know any better they'd think the older looking carriage was for servants.
But they all knew that wasn't the case. House Seiya's inner familial politics were interesting to say the least...
The two carriages stopped behind the Nevrakis and the nobles started making their way out. Daimon Seiya was the lord of spring and King of Xisha. Although short in stature, Daimon held himself high, and commanded a great deal of respect. Everything about him was tight and in control. He wore his family's colors of purple and green with pride on his ceremonial kimono, a red silk poppy pin on his shoulder, a further jab at House Nevrakis. His long black and gray hair was pulled into a high ponytail. His exceptional beard was braided down the middle, giving it the appearance of silver and black stripes. His face was hard and cold, reminiscent of flint. His one amethyst eye seemed to peer through anyone who dared to cross his path. His left eye had been taken out years ago, but not in some great battle like his people believed. Word had it that instead it was taken out by a scorned concubine's curse.
Daimon only looked briefly at the already large gathering of royals and nobles. He paid them little heed, as no matter what family or blood one was from, Daimon believed his superior. Yes, he even believed House Lorcain to be beneath him, viewing their honorable disposition as more a burden than a strength. Neassa was just a sad, pathetic widow with power in his eyes. Alasdair had been a fool. He knew too little about their children to form a solid opinion of them, but if they were anything like their honorable, foolish parents, well...the king of Spring was predisposed to dislike them. However, Daimon was smart enough to hold his tongue around the queen and her children, especially after the king's sacrifice for them all. Daimon knew it wasn't his place to speak on such matters, unless of course he was asked away from them.
The Nevrakis were a whole other matter altogether to him. Their families had disliked one another for years. Daimon believed them all to be little more than bumbling fools who wasted their lives on the most meaningless of things. He believed them to be wasteful, as they seemed to have a damn feast every other week since the War of Man and Magic ended. A part of him had hoped that after the Sinking of Nuxvar, Demetrius would finally take things seriously.
His hopes had apparently been too high.
Daimon shook his head in a disappointed manner as he held his hand out for his lady wife, Mika. A long nailed, delicate looking hand took his in kind as he gently guided the lady out.
The poison queen, as some called her, was a gorgeous elf. She was taller than her husband, her back ramrod straight. There awas an air of confidence and pride about this woman. One would find it hard not to look directly at her whenever she appeared, as her presence alone was so potent. No matter where she was, Queen Mika Seiya was always the center of attention. Her hair was long and silky, raven in color with silver streaks. Her eyes were beautiful violets on a pale field. Her own ceremonial kimono was also in the colors of her house, the obi decorated with red poppies. Her headdress was also decorated with the much hated flowers.
Mika turned to the other gathered houses, her lips painted a deep shade of green, a call back to her house of origin, as well as an embrace of her title as Queen of Poisons. She grinned like a cat who had just caught elusive but defenseless prey.
"Well...look who all's here. And yet, our future king or queen are nowheree to be found. What a shame".
"House Eronen will come" Neassa told her, not at all afraid of her, "If they don't we have to begin the ceremony without them".
"They're our future-"
"Their blood is still in the cauldron, your grace" Neassa cut her off.
The mood that settled over them was tense, even as the Seiya children began to emerge. Neassa addressed her children and the Nevrakis.
"Go inside. Your destinies await us all...and may fortune smile on all who are here. And all of Iorera".

Let's start off by saying that it wouldn't end well for Eredin if Lara had survived and found out what he did to her father:
First of all, my HC is that Eredin and Lara didn’t get along well from the start. They would both butt heads with one another. Eredin being the big ego he was, would try to get a reaction from Lara and she would have to try and suppress any reactions in order for him to get nothing from her. In fact, whenever these two converse, it usually results in bitter sarcasm. And while Lara may have not gotten along with him, she at least did respect his role being the leader of the Wild Hunt, as he did with her being the princess of their people and possessing the Elder Blood. But whatever small ounce of respect she held for him before is ruined once he starts trying to go after Ciri, AND ESPECIALLY after he plays a part in having her father killed. At that point, all the reins are off and there is no holding her back from kicking his ass anymore. (also not to mention that Seagull’s and Sparrowhawks are natural enemies…)

yess because he’s the son of ceallach, because he’s a graf (count) himself—it may not have been that he was kept in squalid conditions, such as yennefer at stygga, but…
because he had a mental breakdown,
“I don’t recall the rest. Those who found me claimed I was running around in circles howling like a wolf. They had to tie me up.”
i imagine it was akin to being put in a psych ward. yes, cahir was a grippy sock girlie, in my mind. (this also means that i imagine that whatever legal defense he had was able to spin the angry comment of his about emhyr hunting a little girl like a sparrowhawk (which is such truth and realness… when cahir said this, i went ‘finally; someone said it’) as, your honor, my client was mentally indisposed…)
cahir is very resolute and has a good constitution, though, in his physical body as is mentioned, but also his mind.
throughout the series, he’s characterized by his determination, in his pursuit of ciri, and then, his pursuit of geralt 😅 … and then the pursuit of ciri, again (third time’s the charm?). he never backs down from what he’s after, even if he wants to chase death herself or fight the grim reaper himself.
i imagine that, though it was extremely difficult to face his failure and that he had fallen out of favor, towards the middle of his sentence he took the time to collect himself.
he was really so young when he was sent to first after ciri, barely into his 20s.
because asides from the obvious trauma of that hellscape that was cintra which he was tossed into, his entire breeding and grooming had been to win honor,
“The thought of why I had to capture a Cintran princess didn’t even cross my mind. An order’s an order. I was cross, naturally, because I wanted to taste fame, fighting against the knighthood, against the regular army… But working for the intelligence service is also treated as an honour where I come from. If it had only concerned a more taxing task, a more important prisoner… But a girl?”
(it may be projecting, but that cahir’s entire self-image rode on the back of what his elders and authorities thought of him is relatable to me—and when that all comes crashing down, it destroys you, you’re left with nothing and you have to re-invent yourself, start back at square one).
now that cahir had failed, actually failed so badly that he managed the opposite of winning honor, it crushed and shattered his entire identity. he had to face failure, dishonor, shame—foreign and uncomfortable concepts to our little graf. and he reckoned with this while in prison.
but he came out on the other side of it with pride and insolence. again, his determination.
“So, let it be known that, naturally, the prospect of saving your neck from the executioner’s axe exists only if you do not make a mistake this time. Your chances of a full pardon are small. Your chances of my forgiving and forgetting are… non-existent.
The young knight in the black armour did not flinch this time either, but Coehoorn detected the flash in his eyes. He doesn’t believe him, he thought. He doesn’t believe him and is deluding himself. He is making a great mistake.
cahir overcame with his failure with determination, self-confidence, believing that he would be able to succeed, to right his wrongs and win honor this time.
but he was mistaken.
his belief that he would still be able to achieve a full pardon and win honor doesn’t work out. and then he gets to fail even harder, and finally realize that he was pursuing the wrong goal all this time, that the honor for blood and fatherland was nothing, and for friendship and love is what really matters…
this is why i like cahir and believe him to be worthy of the company, for his mistakes and for his failure. he is a very compelling antagonist-turned-protagonist, because his story turns out to be one typical of a protagonist all along. that’s how you write a guy like this. there was never any black knight of cintra.
the two years that cahir was imprisoned are my roman empire

Anime Review: Tales from Earthsea
**spoiler free!**
Over the past few years, I’ve made it my goal to watch every single Studio Ghibli movie, and I’m nearing my way to the end. One of the last ones I had yet to watch was Tales from Earthsea, or Ged Senki. This film is the directing debut of Gorou Miyazaki, Hayao Miyazaki’s son, and is based off of Ursula Le Guin’s Earthsea book series.
The plot centers around Arren, a young prince who is extremely troubled and restless. He travels around the land of Earthsea trying to rid himself of his dark visions and comes across friendly archmage Sparrowhawk. The two start traveling together and meet farmers Tenar and Therru. Eventually, the group ends up having to face powerful wizard Lord Cob, who will stop at nothing to achieve his goal of eternal life.
I was shocked to discover that Earthsea is actually a really heavy film centering on discussions of death and mortality. I don’t see this being appropriate for young children because it’s quite possibly the most violent and terrifying Ghibli film out there. Yes, Princess Mononoke and Grave of the Fireflies have their fair share of violence and scary scenes, but this stuff was just creepy and eerie in a way that those other two are not.
There were also a ton of loose ends and plot points that made no sense, that I’m assuming would make sense if you’ve read the Earthsea books? I have not read the books, but I don’t think I should have to to be able to enjoy this movie. Howl’s Moving Castle is also based on a book series, but it is still able to stand alone and became one of the most popular Ghibli movies ever.
Something I will give the film credit for is that it was not boring; some of the other less popular Ghibli films I was struggling to get through because they just couldn’t keep my attention, but I was pretty invested in this one just because so much stuff was happening at once. The animation was of course great the majority of the time, but Ghibli is rarely ever lacking in visuals.
This is my hot take about some of the less popular Studio Ghibli films. There are definitely a few hidden gems (I’m looking at you, Only Yesterday) but if a movie has the privilege of being released by a big name studio like Ghibli and doesn’t end up being popular or at the very least respected, then it is probably unpopular for a reason. I can see niche audiences really liking Ocean Waves, When Marnie was There, or The Cat Returns, but I understand why they haven’t blown up like Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, or Totoro.
Tbh, this kind of turned into a rant about Studio Ghibli movies but I should probably expand on that in another post. Overall, Tales from Earthsea was just not for me, but it was also certainly not boring and I can definitely see how fans of the book series would enjoy it because they actually have context as to what’s going on. If you’ve actually seen Earthsea, does this movie have a cult following or something? Does everyone besides me like it? I’m very curious about your thoughts.
Thanks again for reading!

Skyward Sword - comparing NPC names in English and Spanish
For this I’ll be comparing mainly 2 (technically 3) translations of SkSw: English (ENG), Spanish (Latinamerica) (ESP-LA) and Spanish (Spain) (ESP-SP). If available, I’ll add the Japanese (JP) too. The spanish ones might be the same in some cases, which will be marked as (ESP). (I might also add an extra translation or two if i know them)
Link (リンク - Rinku), Zelda (ゼルダ - Zeruda) and Impa (インパ - Inpa) stay the same in all translations. Some of them have some minor changes tho (beware of slight spoilers for SkSw)
(Special thanks to @sunnylaurels for sharing the Japanese names for the Skyloft NPCs! And to @attllhak for sharing some French ones! - Really Long post under cut)
Main/Important Characters
Fi (ENG) - Fay (ESP) - ファイ (Fai) (JP)
These are basically the same, just different spelling. There’s a lot of speculation as to what Fi’s name is based on. For some reason I like to think it’s because of “Wi-Fi” but anything goes
Ghirahim (ENG) - Grahim (ESP) - ギラヒム (Girahimu) (JP)
This one’s interesting because both ‘translations’ are technically right. English follows it more “to the letter” doing “Gira” as “Ghira”, while Spanish interprets it as “Gra” since Japanese doesn’t do the two-different-consonants together thing, but overall both are the same
Groose (ENG) - Vilán (ESP-LA) - Malton (ESP-SP) - バド (Bado) (JP)
Groose, Groose, Groose. Probably the main character with the MOST changes. “Bado” seems to be referencing the Japanese pronunciation of “bird”, but could also be interpreted as “Birdo”. LA Spanish’s “Vilán” is sometimes seen as referencing the english “Villain”, but recently @/deerdroo pointed out to me it’s most definitely referencing the “Gavilán” bird, which resembles a little eagle (Wikipedia calls it a “sparrowhawk” in English). Not sure what Spain’s doing with “Malton” but I like it. And of course “Groose” follows the bird naming theme most of Skyloft has (referencing grouse and goose). Also his name in French is “Hergo”
Demise (ENG) - El Heraldo de la Muerte (ESP) - 終焉の者 (Shūen no Mono) (JP)
Okay this guy. “終焉の者” could be translated as “The One Who Brings The End”, according to @/sunnylaurels. So, in a way, I guess it makes sense for the English translation to just grab “Demise” for the name but also I feel it REALLY takes away from how it’s a Title rather than a name? He’s an ancient being, him existing as a “concept” and having no name adds a lot to his character imo. Anyways, “El Heraldo de la Muerte” would translate as “The herald of death” or “the messenger of death”, which is like really ominous i think - imagine having to fight some guy and everyone on earth calls him the messenger of death. I’d be so scared. Yes I’m very aware Demise means Death i just think it’s silly he just gets called that and that’s it. Also i keep reading it as Denise so really, who’s losing here? Not me.
As a fun add-on to this, in German his name can be translated to “Death-bringer” (thanks @/aureateart), while in French it’s Avatar du Néant, which would translate to “Avatar of the Void” (thanks @/attllhak)
The Imprisoned (ENG) - El Cautivo (ESP-LA) - El Durmiente (ESP-SP)
“El Cautivo” basically means The Imprisoned, but “El Durmiente” means “The Sleeping One”, which... fits, but also i find it a bit funny, not sure why. Fight the sleepy avocado everyone
Deities + The Surface’s Main Places’ Names
The Goddesses stay the same in these translations too:
Din (ENG, ESP) - ディン (Din) (JP)
Nayru (ENG, ESP) - ネール (Nēru) (JP)
Farore (ENG, ESP) - フロル (Furoru) (JP)
Hylia (ENG, ESP) - ハイリア (Hairia) (JP)
The dragons, for the most part, too. The only one that really changes is Faron, which changes to “Farone” much like in Twilight Princess with the Light Spirit of the same name.
Eldin (ENG, ESP) - オルディン (Orudin) (JP)
Lanayru (ENG, ESP) - ラネール (Ranēru) (JP)
Faron (ENG) - Farone (ESP) - フィローネ (Firōne) (JP)
Levias (ENG) - Narisha (ESP)
I couldn’t for the life of me find Levias’ name in Japanese, but considering EVERY translation EXCEPT English has him as Narisha? i’m gonna take a wild guess and say it’s ナリシャ (Narisha) or similar. His name Levias is based off the word Leviathan. And Fun fact! Did you know the spaniard Zelda Wiki lists him as being one of the dragons? as in, him being a whale-shaped dragon? yeah.
The Surface (ENG) - Las Tierras Inferiores (ESP)
Las Tierras Inferiores would translate as “The Lower Lands”
Faron Woods (ENG) - Bosque de Farone (ESP)
Eldin Volcano (ENG) - Volcán de Eldin (ESP)
Lanayru Dessert (ENG) - Desierto de Lanayru (ESP)
These ones mean the same for the most part, just with the change of Faron to Farone.
Skyloft / The Sky - Places and Animals
The Sky (ENG) - El Cielo (ESP-LA) - Celéstea (ESP-SP)
“El Cielo” literally means The Sky, while Celéstea would be a play on “Celestial” (From the Heavens/Skies). Fun side note - “El Cielo” also means “Heaven”, so when i was younger everytime i went back to the sky i’d be like “rip Link he’s dead :/”
Skyloft (ENG) - Neburia (ESP-LA) - Altárea (ESP-SP)
Neburia, from what I learned after a 4 am Wikipedia dive, could be based off the word “Nébula”, which can mean “Cloud”. It basically means “Cloud Town”. Altárea, I think??? would be based off the word “Alto” which means “High (Altitude)” so basically, “A Place High Up”? If anyone wants to comment on this i’d appreciate it
The Lumpy Pumpkin (ENG) - La Calabaza Flotante (ESP-LA) - Calabarza’s (ESP-SP)
“La Calabaza Flotante” literally means “The Floating Pumpkin”, while “Calabarza’s” is a really clever play on Calabaza and bar. I’m not sure what the name of the island itself is in english, but in Spanish it’s “Isla Calabaza” (Pumpkin Island) (ESP-LA) and “Calabia” (word play on “Pumpkin Place”) (ESP-SP)
Loftwing (ENG) - Neburí (ESP-LA) - Pelícaro (ESP-SP)
Neburí would also come from Nébula, so it’d translate to something like “Cloudy (thing)”? possibly. Pelícaro seems like a play on the word “Pelícano” which means Pelican.
Remlit (ENG) - Lémury (ESP) - Remuri (JP)
Lémury is a play on “Lémur”, probably because of Remlits’ ringed tails. Remuri might be the same play of words.
Skyloft/The Sky - NPCs
(I might revisit some of these at one point since some of the references they could have flew over my head!) (haha get it? flew? the sky? ok)
Batreaux (ENG) - Mursego (ESP-LA) - Batolo (ESP-SP) - Morusego (JP)
My friend! my buddy! Batreaux is an obvious play with “Bat”, since he kind of resembles one. This is kept in both Spanish names - Batolo seems like a combination of “Bat” and “Bartolo” (a spanish name), and Mursego is based off the spanish for Bat “Murciélago” (as well as being the closest to the Japanese “Morusego”!!). Keeps the “flying animal” theme in all three languages.
Beedle (ENG) - Terry (ESP) - テリー (Terī) (JP)
The man, the myth, the legend. Beedle’s name is similar to “beetle”, the insects he loves in BoTW and SS. Not sure what the deal with “Terry” and similar is. He keeps the “flying animal name” theme with Beedle, sort of, but loses it in every other translation (which, btw, is also Terry or a variant in most languages)
Bertie (ENG) - Arín (ESP-LA) - Alfred (ESP-SP) - Arin (JP)
This poor man. Working all day and all night. Bertie’s supposed to reference a type of sparrot called “lovebird” (the bird part). For Arín, besides being basically the same as Japanese, could reference the word “Cantarín”, which means “singsong” and is used to describe birds that sing a lot. Alfred... no clue.
Cawlin (ENG) - Corvy (ESP) - Ras (JP)
In the same way “Cawlin” references “caw”, which is the sound crows make, “Corvy” references this same bird, called “Cuervo” in Spanish. In french he’s “Orbo”, which if i had to guess also references crows.
Croo (ENG) - Gurriaco (ESP)
“Croo” could reference both the “cooing” of birds and “crow”, like Cawlin above. Gurriaco, if I reach enough, could be referencing “Urraca”, a type of bird in Spanish.
Dodoh (ENG) - Dodo (ESP) - Dodo (JP)
Referencing the extinct bird of the same name in all languages, I guess.
Dovos (ENG) - Dombo (ESP)
Dovos feels like it’s referencing “Dove”. Dombo gives be “Dumbo” vibes - probably could reference it because he flies? not sure
Eagus (ENG) - Aquilo (ESP) - Igurusu (JP)
Eagus, Aquilo, and Igurusu are referencing Eagles. It’s more obvious in Eagus. The spanish for Eagle is “Águila”, which is just two letters off from Aquilo.
Fledge (ENG) - Gruyo (ESP) - Sebasun (JP)
Fledge is referencing Fledgling, a young bird. Gruyo comes from “Gruya”, which is Crane in spanish. In french his name’s “Célestin”.
Gaepora (ENG, ESP-LA) - Gaépora (ESP-SP) - ゲポラ (Gepora) (JP)
Pretty much the same. His name is also a combination of the Owl from Ocarina of Time’s name “Kaepora Gaebora” (ENG, ESP) - ケポラ・ゲボラ (Kepora Gebora), probably because he looks a lot like the Sage of Light Rauru and the owl he turns into. One of the few Skyloftians not named after a bird in English, though technically he is if we consider the above?
Gondo (ENG, ESP-LA) - Dorcon (ESP-SP) - Doruko (JP)
Not sure what Gondo might be referencing bird-wise exactly? though i think “Gondo” is similar to “Gonzo” (from Wind Waker), with who I think shares some design aspects. Dorcon in Spain’s Spanish seems to just take from the original Japanese. In French his name’s also “Dorco”!
Goselle (ENG) - Alani (ESP) - Otaka (JP)
I’ll be real, not sure what’s going on with her names in either language. Goselle gives me bird vibes but i’m not sure. Alani reminds me of the spanish “Alaja”, which means Jewel
Greba (ENG) - Ornella (ESP) - Miho (JP)
Ornella reminds me of the word “Hornilla” (mute H), which is basically the hole where the heat comes out of in wooden ovens... but! according to the dictionary it also means “(a) hole where pigeons make their nest” so i guess it’s bird related too!
Gully (ENG) - Gabio (ESP-LA) - Gabi (ESP-SP) - Garu (JP)
Gully most definitely references a seagull. Gabio and Gabi references the same animal, but in spanish obviously - “Gaviota”.
Henya (ENG) - Galina (ESP-LA) - Zenona (ESP-SP) - Heena (JP)
Henya references Hens, as does Galina (Hen being “Gallina” in Spanish). Zenona... uh.. not sure where that came from? I’m halfway through this post realizing i’d gladly accept comments from any spanish speaking person who wants to give an input on these things im missing
Horwell (ENG) - Asteus (ESP) - Hoonelu (JP)
i’ll be real im not sure what Asteus is referencing. Horwell seems to be pretty close to the japanese for the most part though
Jakamar (ENG) - Carpín (ESP) - Geran (JP)
Carpín is most definitely referencing Wood Peckers (“Pájaro Carpintero”/Carpenter Birds)
Karane (ENG) - Grusi (ESP-LA) - Gracielle (ESP-SP) - Kuranu (JP)
Karane seems to be almost the same as in Japanese, while Spanish went crazy and gave her a completely different name, tho at least they’re kinda similar between each other. Also in french her name’s “Grida” (another Gr name!!)
Keet (ENG) - Pío (ESP-LA) - Pitxi (ESP-SP) - Michiru (JP)
Pío is, quite literally, the sound birds make (or the way we’d write that sound in spanish), especially chicks. Pitxi is a mystery to me
Kina (ENG) - Calabel (ESP-LA) - Calabelle (ESP-SP) - Panan (JP)
Calabel/Calabelle is referencing the spanish for Pumpkin, “Calabaza”, giving it a more feminine name-esque ending (like in Anabel/Anabelle)
Kukiel (ENG) - Picalia (ESP-LA) - Cuqui (ESP-SP) - Kuuko (JP)
Cuqui could be referencing that exact same word (often spelled “Kuki”) that just means “cute”. Picalia seems like a play with “pícara” which basically means “gremlin” (google translates it as “sassy” but im not sure if that word fits)
Luv (ENG) - Mandi (ESP-LA) - Amanda (ESP-SP) - Manda (JP)
Mandi and Amanda seem to stay close to the Japanese name, both of them being common spanish names. Luv, like i mentioned in Bertie’s part, would reference “love bird” (the love part)
Mallara (ENG) - Pati (ESP-LA) - Patty (ESP-SP) - Rubia (JP)
I only now realized Mallara is referencing mallard ducks. wow. Pati/Patty are just a common name in Spanish. Lil fun fact related to her Japanese name! Rubia means “blonde” in Spanish
Mia (ENG, ESP-LA) - Miwi (ESP-SP) - Mi (JP)
mia my baby girl. i love her. im yeeting her off Skyloft. seems they all reference meowing in some way
Orielle (ENG) - Corina (ESP) - Kuina (JP)
LISTEN. the other day i was trying to think just WHAT Corina could be referencing. And the only thing that popped into my brain is that “Corina” is the name they gave the bird Tokyo Mew Mew girl in LatinAmerica. It’s literally the only bird related thing i can think of. Also it sounds a bit like “Kuina”. French name is “Kinaé”, similar to Japanese!
Owlan (ENG) - Buhel (ESP) - Aoulu (JP)
Owlan seems to keep the owl theme across all three! Aoulu seems to just be “owl” quite literally, and Buhel is a play on the spanish for Owl (”Búho”)
Parrow (ENG) - Golondro (ESP) - Parou (JP)
Golondro comes from “Golondrina”, a type of bird! I think it’s called “swallow” in english ... so it kinda fits Parrow anyways! Also Parrow seems to be his japanese name too
Peater (ENG) - Panolo (ESP-LA) - Paul (ESP-SP) - Jakusin (JP)
This guy. man. Seems to be “Jackson” in Japanese? But everyone grabbed a P and ran. Panolo seems like a play on “Manolo”, a nickname for people with the name “Manuel” - maybe mixed with the P for “Pájaro”(Bird)? Paul’s just a common name as far as i know.
Peatrice (ENG) - Panalí (ESP-LA) - Paula (ESP-SP) - Jakuriinu (JP)
Peatrice seems to always be named after her dad. “Jackeline” in Japanese i believe, and barely “feminized” names for the rest. Panalí sounds a bit more like “panal”, the spanish for “hive” (as in beehive)
Piper (ENG) - Joana (ESP)
There’s not much to comment here. Joana’s a common name in Spanish
Pumm (ENG) - Vito (ESP-LA) - Ruperto (ESP-SP) - Puukin (JP)
I have NO clue where Vito came from. It sounds like a badly spelled “Victor”. Where did the Pumpkin theme go???? huh?????. Ruperto’s kind of the same? Unless i’m missing some pumpkin related words in spanish, it’s just a common name.
Pipit (ENG) - Cocu (ESP-LA) - Coocker (ESP-SP) - Kikoa (JP)
This guy. It seems a lot of languages kept the C/K sounds in his name? He’s Kiko in French and Cuco in german (thanks @/aureateart). They seem to reference cuckoo clocks maybe? and the german’s really close to cucco.
Rupin (ENG) - Rupín (ESP-LA) - Milo (ESP-SP) - Kookin (JP)
Rupin/Rupin are referencing Rupees, since he’s the shopkeeper and the alike. Milo... I... I’m not sure what’s referencing?
Rusta (ENG) - Ganzo (ESP) - Rostaa (JP)
Rusta and Rostaa seem to be referencing Roosters, while Ganzo’s referencing the spanish for Goose! (Ganso)
Scrapper (ENG) - Serbot (ESP) - Sarubo (JP)
Including this lil guy here coz... why not? Serbot seems to be almost the same if not the exact name as Japanese (though Sarubo could just be Server?)
Sparrot (ENG) - Aspir (ESP-LA) - Gorronte (ESP-SP) - Subuha (JP)
Gorronte seems to be a play on “Gorrión” (Sparrow), so, pretty close to English. Aspir..... I’m not sure?
Strich (ENG) - Vestro (ESP) - Osta (JP)
Vestro, like Stritch, references Ostriches, with Ostrich in spanish being “Avestruz”. Seems Japanese references the same animal? and I think french too, since he’s “Latruche” in that language!
Wryna (ENG) - Elenia (ESP-LA) - Alisia (ESP-SP) - Arisu (JP)
Alisia seems to stick to the Japanese name Arisu (Alice), while Elenia went... a different direction. Elenia is a variation of a common spanish name, Elena.
