I think it’s pretty evident Link Click is one of—if not the—most popular donghua out there right now, at least internationally!

It’s just unfortunate that for most fandoms of Chinese series, the most active fandoms remain on Chinese social media. So whenever I promote donghua and manhua and Chinese music and even cdramas, I say they’re underrated, but I usually mean globally—like even with cdramas, one of the more globally popular pieces of Chinese media, they still often get overlooked by fans who go for kdramas instead.

Inside China, many of these series are actually thriving!!

For example, if you browse the Weibo tag for Beryl and Sapphire or Dalisi Rizhi or Villain Initialization or Xi Yang Yang or ONER or Xiao Gui, you’ll find plenty of fan content, even if you can barely see anything in the west (this is also why I regularly scrape the “donghua” and “manhua” tags on Tumblr to reblog almost anything I can find; why I run my Chinese media recommendations lists like this one and why I archive Chinese fans’ work or videos on Chinese media or western videos on China that aren’t sinophobic that interest me; and why I force my western social media algorithms to show me more Chinese things by watching a lot of them because if I don’t, they’ll just give up because it’s so hard to find said Chinese things).

It’s my favourite part of when I go back to China haha. I always joke Shanghai is my personal hell because there’s so much merch for donghua and manhua and I can’t stop myself from buying it all… But even then, there’s an entire Chinese animation festival in Hangzhou, many events all over China (but admittedly most often it seems in Shanghai or Hangzhou), merch on Taobao, posts on Bilibili and Weibo and Xiaohongshu and Douyin, etc etc.

In fact, my current obsession is one of the most popular danmei (Chinese BL) series in all of China, known as the 188男团, but it’s barely mentioned in western fandom despite danmei growing bigger internationally.

It’s become part of my routine to regularly check Weibo and Lofter and other sites for food because of this haha. There’s a lot of amazing fan art and fics and more on Chinese social media for Chinese media out there!

The only thing I try to keep in check is how often I check Bilibili, because I almost always end up spiralling into binge-watching too many videos for too many different series lol.

As for why some popular Chinese series in China don’t do as well in the west—such as the 188男团—I guess part of it is because Chinese fans have different tastes (they seem more okay with dark fiction, for one), but also because sinophobia is pretty normalized globally and China’s not the best at soft power.

Anyway, that gets into more academic stuff (which I have been trying to research for my academic career), but I won’t overwhelm you with all that stuff ahaha.

In any case, Link Click is indeed doing very well for itself, both in China and globally as a piece of Chinese media, even if it is still kind of underrated in the grand scheme of things!

I just started using Rednote (Xiaohongshu) and the AMOUNT of Link Click content on it made me think that yeah Link Click IS popular it's just my friends who don't wanna watch this underrated masterpiece.

The Xianle quartet in the begining of TGCF is literally so funny to me as a concept.

Because it's literally these 3 guys who have disguised themselves from this 1 guy to go hang out with him. 2 of them know who each other is and also immediately recognised who the third guy is but don't have any proof to back it up. And the third guy also knows exactly who they are but he doesn't care and doesn't even wanna interact with them because he got beef with them.

Meanwhile the 1 guy they are disguising themselves from actually recognised them on sight because they absolutely suck at disguising themselves, but they're trying so hard and he doesn't want them to feel bad and they're also hanging out now so that's fun, he doesn't wanna ruin that.
