I wrote this song after reading the first version of my partner's novel, The Rotting Hound. The vocals are meant to represent the Emissary of Saturn, an instrument distinctly otherworldly compared to all the others, and the bassoon solo represents Vasak, devoted to her duty to support and uplift the melody of the Emissary, while also always reaching towards her beyond her limits.
The song goes through three time signatures, starting in 7/8, then 5/8, then 6/8 to represent the Emissary of Saturn's dominion over time.
Vocals by me, with supporting vocals from my good friend @rosespirit. Album art by me (also the cover of the book)
The Rotting Hound is available for purchase now — UK | US | AUS | CAN | FR | DE | NL Or search “The Rotting Hound” on your local Amazon

This is like 95% finished. I just need to keep tweaking the mix. The reverb sounded waaaay better on my computer than it does with my headphones on my phone haha

alright, I finished writing the cover I think! The flute accompaniment was quickly arranged by myself, and the piano arrangement was modified from free sheet music I found, and the original arranger is Bernard Dewagtere. I used his arrangement as a base for mine and simply changed it every once in a while where I wanted a different sound. :)
Now all that's left is actually recording it! I don't plan on adding too much to it...I think a song like this is best when it's kept relatively simple n_n
I'll post the individual tracks separately for Fun :)

Trying something new with Falling Birds at the end of the song. This is the volume automation (control) for a bunch of vocal tracks.
I want the different vocal parts to have this kind of chaotic undulating feel to them, where some parts force their way into the listener's attention when they otherwise might not.
I could probably do cool stuff with panning in this, but I'm a person who almost exclusively uses only headphone at a time when listening to stuff for Leisure, so I hate panning as a premise bc it denies me the full experience when I listen that way LOL so instead I'm just messing with volume
If I was a person who enjoyed panning, I think I'd try and make it feel like the vocal parts are spinning around? But I am not! So I won't be doing that :)

working on a cover of Danny Boy as a Christmas present. The violin is standing in for where my vocals will go, and I'm hoping to get a tin whistle and record the flute section as well, but it's been a long time since I played a flute of any variety so we will have to see how that goes haha
The piano section has so far been adjusted from an arrangement I found online, since this is just a gift and I have limited time to spend on arrangement

This is the rough rough rough idea of a theme for Alexandria Rowan Renshaw from the Asterion trilogy by Sam Farren. She is one of my favorite characters and her characterization is INCREDIBLY strong, so I've been anxious about starting her theme.
I learned the 3rd movement of the Sonata Pathetique as a kid and I think the beginning of this was inspired a lot by that. I know I want there to be a time signature change into a more romantic segment as well, so I tried that, but it'll definitely be tricky getting the transition to feel smooth
Oh yeah and I didn't actually want the finished thing to be in E minor necessarily but that's how it popped into my head. I'll probably mess w the transpose options later...
I wrote this in Musescore 4 and exported it from there, so it's just using whatever their stock plugins are. I'll move it into the DAW when it's a little more thoroughly composed. I like being able to see the notes in front of me when writing harmonies.
