Guys, I realize things are bad in the US right now but keep Cuba in your prayers. Two hurricanes have hit the country in the last year -- Hurricances Oscar and Rafael -- their national power grid is suffering constant outages, and now there's been a 6.8 magnitude earthquake.

Cuba was left reeling on Thursday after a fierce Category 3 hurricane ripped across the island and knocked out the country’s power grid. The magnitude of the impact remained unclear through the early hours of the day, but forecasters warned that Hurricane Rafael could bring “life-threatening” storm surges, winds and flash floods to Cuba after ravaging parts of the Cayman Islands and Jamaica. On Wednesday evening, massive waves lashed at Havana’s shores as sharp winds and rain whipped at the historic cityscape, leaving trees littered on flooded roads. Much of the city was dark and deserted. As it ploughed across Cuba, the storm slowed to a Category 2 hurricane chugging into the Gulf of Mexico near northern Mexico and southern Texas, according to the National Hurricane Centre in Miami. But many Cubans were left picking up the pieces from the night before, with a strange sense of deja vu after a rocky few weeks in the Caribbean nation. In October, the island was hit by a one-two punch. First, Cuba was roiled by stretching island-wide blackouts stretching on for days, a product of the island’s energy crisis. Shortly after, it was slapped by another powerful hurricane that killed at least six people in the eastern part of the island.

hurricane rafael has officially reached category 3 just before its set to hit cuba, making it the fifth major hurricane of the season. by tonight its expected to reach the gulf and weaken substantially. spaghetti models are now predicting a sharp left turn to mexico. this is dependent on how much strength its able to maintain once it hits the gulf, with a weaker hurricane directing west and a stronger one keeping east, which at this point is very unlikely.
#hurricane rafael#stormposting#<- blockable tag for whenever these things come up. in case it makes anyone nervous. hell it makes me nervous. it was cat 1 yesterday.#i feel sick for cuba. keeping offline. its path is still up in the air at the moment and ill update if there are any changes.

Hurricane Rafael Crosses Cuba
Hurricane Rafael made landfall in the western Cuban province of Artemisa as a Category 3 storm on the afternoon of November 6, 2024. The hurricane approached the island from the south, having skirted past Jamaica the previous day as a tropical storm. Approaching Cuba, it traversed warm waters and encountered light to moderate vertical wind shear—environmental conditions that helped the storm to strengthen into a major hurricane.
Rafael’s sustained wind speeds peaked at 115 miles (185 kilometers) per hour prior to landfall, reported the National Hurricane Center (NHC). It weakened slightly upon encountering land, downgrading to a Category 2 storm as it moved across Cuba and tracked northwest into the Gulf of Mexico.
The VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) sensor on the NOAA-21 satellite captured this false-color image of the storm at about 1:45 a.m. Eastern Time (06:45 Universal Time) on November 7, approximately 8 hours after entering the gulf. The image depicts infrared signals known as brightness temperature, which is useful for distinguishing cooler cloud structures (white and purple) from the warmer surface below (yellow and orange). At the time the image was acquired, Rafael was a Category 2 hurricane with sustained winds of 105 miles (170 kilometers) per hour.
According to news reports, the Cuban government announced the hurricane had knocked out power across the entire island before landfall. Several airports suspended flights. Western Cuba was expected to receive 4 to 8 inches (100 to 200 millimeters) of rainfall from the storm system, according to the NHC, with several inches also forecast for the Cayman Islands and Florida Keys. The NHC also warned of strong storm surge that could raise water as much as 14 feet (about 4 meters) above normal levels along Cuba’s southern coast.
As of the morning of November 7, forecasters expected Rafael to move slowly to the west and remain a hurricane for several days, though it could weaken as it encounters a dry airmass in the southern Gulf of Mexico. The longer-term forecast remained uncertain.
Consistent with National Weather Service predictions, it has been an active year for hurricanes in the North Atlantic. Rafael is the 17th named storm and 11th hurricane of the 2024 season, which runs from June 1 to November 30. These numbers exceed the average seasonal totals of 14 named storms and seven hurricanes.

Hurricane Rafael hit Cuba as Category 3 storm
Hurricane Rafael hit Cuba as a Category 3 storm on Wednesday, causing the national power grid to collapse and leaving the country in darkness. The storm brought winds of up to 185 kilometres per hour and torrential rains to the island, disrupting an energy system that was already in a critical state.
The US National Hurricane Centre (NHC) said “life-threatening storm surge, damaging hurricane-force winds and flash flooding” were expected in western Cuba. Cuba’s capital, Havana, about 75km from the hurricane’s centre, was hit by the storm, suffering wind gusts and torrential rains that snapped power lines and felled trees.
Cuba’s state electricity operator UNE said the hurricane had completely knocked out the national electricity system, leaving all 10 million of the island’s residents without power. State television confirmed it was the second major outage in recent months. The country was also hit by a major outage in October, leading to a critical shortage of resources.
Cuba prepares for flooding and collapses in Havana amid hurricane warning
A hurricane warning has been issued for Havana, home to about 2 million people. Police patrols are urging residents to take shelter in safe places as the storm rages. Schools are closed and flights at Jose Marti International Airport and popular resorts such as Varadero and Cayo Largo have been cancelled until further notice. More than 100 Canadian tourists have been evacuated from the island of Cayo Largo, which was also hit by the hurricane.
In the hurricane’s path were the agricultural areas of Artemis and Pinar del Rio, which grow tobacco for Cuba’s famous hand-rolled cigars. Cuban Agriculture Minister Ydael Pérez Brito said farmers were taking measures to protect 8,000 tonnes of tobacco and other crops such as ripening fruits and vegetables that are also threatened.
This is a particularly difficult time for Cuba, as the country’s energy sector is already suffering due to outdated fuel oil-fuelled power plants. Problems have been exacerbated by dwindling oil supplies from Venezuela, Russia and Mexico. In October, Hurricane Oscar slammed through the eastern part of the island, which, along with power outages at the time, critically damaged Cuba’s infrastructure.
Forecasters report that Hurricane Rafael will soon head towards the western Gulf of Mexico. However, the forecast of its further movement remains uncertain, and experts continue to monitor changes in its trajectory in order to timely warn the population of neighbouring territories about the threat.

Cuba goes immediately into recovery after Hurricane Rafael leaves the island
By Leticia Martinez Hernandez
Nov. 7 — As soon as Hurricane Rafael began to leave Cuba, the National Defense Council, headed by President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, met to evaluate the steps to be taken after the strong impact of this meteorological phenomenon.
We are going immediately to the recovery, with no time to lose, from the early hours of Thursday, said President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, when heading, on Wednesday evening, the meeting of the National Defense Council, in which the next steps were evaluated, after the strong impact of Hurricane Rafael.

Hurricane Rafael is expected to rapidly intensify as it barrels toward Cuba
Hurricane Rafael swirled past the Cayman Islands and was expected to rapidly intensify before making landfall on Wednesday in western Cuba, where it’s forecast to hit as a Category 2 hurricane. It was another stroke of bad news for Cuba, which has been struggling with blackouts while recovering from another hurricane two weeks ago that killed at least six people in the eastern part of the…
