the dishonesty here is palpable. the op of this post complained that they spent hours editing a video only for it to get 200 views. this is only important if you think views/follower counts correlate directly with income. if you want to be an influencer who makes art, just fucking say so. but this is not the point of simply "being an artist".

you absolutely do not "have" to spend hours of your day making tiktoks and reels showing your workspace and process and daily life and upcoming releases. it is a conscious decision to spend your time being an entertainer for children who consume exclusively short-form media instead of enjoying and honing your craft.

please don't let posts like this make you think that this is the "only way" of being an artist in the social media era and that if you don't document your entire process, you're some kind of failure. don't let posts like this guilt you into thinking you aren't doing enough. freelancing obviously involves marketing yourself, i'm not saying "advertising your work is bad", but if you are at any time fretting over the tedium of making a process tiktok maybe take a few steps back and evaluate if the time you are spending catering to the algorithm is proportionate to the time you are spending actually doing the things you like.

I have this funny image of the great race being kind of like a dog show, but for mimics, and they go around the arena with the mimics on these harnesses. And poor Gordon, he gets halfway around the arena before rolling over and dying.

Meanwhile mimic Thomas shows up to perform even though he has a twisted ankle from his accident and is still in one of those soft pillow cones they use for rabbits.

Your assessment over the Great Race's events being more like a dog show are correct. Railway Shows are basically just bigger more elitist dog or cat shows with very specific categories aimed at specific kinds of mimics.

The reason for Gordon to be pulled out of the race, however, has more to do with the fact his body started violently rejecting the sudden modifications he was subjected to.

You see, mimics have a very special organ called a vesicula magica which seems to be the key to all their strange abilities (although no one has been able to make heads or tails of how it works). Gordon seems to have a considerably weaker vesicula magica which means his flexibility for "modifications" is near-nonexistent. He needs to take supplements when he goes to the Steamworks specifically so that he doesn't reject any veterinary care that involves feeding him parts that were designed with the A1 specifications to mend broken bones or vitamin deficiencies that resemble broken down parts in locomotives.

Gordon was essentially sent to race without having had any of these supplements, and the ordeal was... Well it involved a lot more flesh wriggling and blood spewing out of orifices than you'd be comfortable thinking about... It also caused the other mimics racing to actually abandon the race and scatter in a panic (which is not great since they were all at service size and they caused a bit of destruction trying to get away from the scene).

It was BAD. Scandal levels of bad.

You're spot on about Thomas tho. He was competing on three legs and with a cone, while his fur was incredibly patchy from both having to be shaved to give him treatment and also having had to have thick dry paint cut off of him.

He did not care the slightest tho, he wanted to participate and he got exactly that! Even if Vinnie attacking Philip helped to cut that brief moment of glory short. Either way he still got a lot of praise for his valiant efforts.

What has the strongest effect on morale, you reckon? Texture-based toys? Audio response (eg. Things that jingle when bumped) toys? Visual toys eg. A wall of lava lamps?

For collective morale, I don't think there's really one option that will have the strongest effect because each train will have different needs; if I really had to choose, I would say audio due to ease of accessibility on the railway's part, but ultimately it's dependent on the individual trains

For example, Gordon clearly shows interest in music and detests any form of physical labor that he believes is "beneath" him (e.g. shunting); ergo, it'd make sense that he'd gravitate toward audio response toys

By contrast, we are shown very early on in one episode that when given a "day off" Thomas resorts to shunting/bumping cars for fun; it'd would make more sense then that he may prefer tactile toys

It's those possible differences that could clash amidst the trains, not unlike how some people enjoy one form of stimulation, but then others loathe it; much like what is recommended with pets and wild animals, variety is key to combat boredom while ensuring all individuals are equally entertained
