Welp. This fucking sucks. As we all knew it would.
I'll still be here, posting good news and only good news, no matter what.
The United States is going to be a much bleaker place for the next four years (and hopefully no longer than that).
But there's an entire world out there that's not the United States. And even in the United States, there are literally millions of people trying their best to do what's right and to protect everyone they can.
Hang in there. Find something you can do to help the world and the people around you - no matter what it is, no matter how small.
And whatever you do - whatever you have to do, emphatically including if you need to not look at the news ever for the next four years - keep yourself safe, and keep yourself alive.
This too shall pass. Literally everything does.
There is still a whole world out there. There are millions of people doing whatever they can to help. This situation is awful but it is not hopeless.
Whatever you have to do, keep yourself alive.
There will be a time when we're on the other side of this. There will be a time when this horror show is over, and we've made it out.
I am going to see you all there, or so help me fucking god.

This IS a real good example of reasons for hope
So… I got a notification from the State Department at like 8 PM Pacific that my passport was approved, and I was quietly thankful and stunned bc my legal gender in Oregon is listed as X, or undeclared, and that's what's on my passport. I'm pretty sure someone(s) worked late to get the X passports done today.
I was already really grateful to whoever in the Seattle Passport Office worked late to get these things processed on the last Friday before That Man gets back into office... and then I got a notification that my passport shipped at fucking midnight Pacific and whoever got that shit out the door so it couldn't be picked up on Monday and like, denied and shredded?
They're my fucking hero.

Viral shedding by asymptomatic people may represent a subset of total infections, but uncertainty remains regarding how much they contribute to totals.
Viral shedding may antedate symptoms, usually two days.
Viral titers are highest in the earliest phases of infection, 1-2 days before the onset of symptoms, and then in the first 4-6 days of illness in patients without immunosuppression.
When Is COVID-19 the Most Contagious?
Researchers estimate that people who get infected with COVID-19 can spread it to others 2-3 days before symptoms start and are most contagious 1-2 days before they feel sick.
&
How long after exposure will you test positive for COVID-19?
Depending on which COVID-19 variant you've been exposed to, you may test positive 3-5 days later. If you've been exposed to the virus but don't have any symptoms, wait for 5 days before you get tested. If you test too early and you do have COVID-19, you may falsely test negative.

What good things are you going to do this week? 1/21/25
Bringing back my "what good things did you do this week" posts from a while back as a way to make/motivate myself do good/activist work despite (and specifically in spite of) these shitty times. And because at least some other people seemed to like it when I was doing them!
I'm going to try to make these posts once weekly on the weekends. If you don't want to see them, filter "doing good things roundup"
Things I'm committing to doing this week:
Start relearning Spanish so that I can help volunteer with Spanish-speaking communities (esp/ideally with any anti-deportation work) (already started this one!)
Volunteer this morning to help distribute breakfast to unhoused communities in my area (just signed up at the wonderful site LA Works, which lists hundreds of volunteer opportunities in LA)
Talk to my roommates about getting a compost bin for our place
Request a new green bin from the city (our old one broke rip)
Volunteer at a pet rescue (I've been trying to do this weekly, as of last week)
Find at least one organization doing fire relief to sign up to help (I'm in LA, but haven't done this yet, and I'm changing that)
Make more good news posts on here
Add your own stuff you've done or are committing to do, so we can all inspire each other and give each other ideas and be reminded that, everywhere, people are trying to help

Thanks for @'ing me on this. It really does go to show how many, many, many people are doing what they can, and how small and often boring acts can mean everything to a person's life.
Like OP says, the next four years are going to be hard. Find something - anything - you can do to help the people around you. It can and will keep you from drowning.

Hey. You. Yeah, you, you herald of the destiel times. You beautiful, wonderful, amazing example of the sheer power and will in humanity. You tenacious, brave, courageous example of journalism through easily understandable methods. You champion of truth. You warrior of information. You committer to the bit. You precious, wonderful, brilliant soul.
You are loved. You are important. You are joy.
Do not let the heaviness of headlines weigh on your soul.
Do not let the pain you print cut out your heart.
Do not give up hope!
Yes, things are bad, but they will get better. Be upset if you need, feel your feels, and even stop posting if you want. But don't you fucking quit hope, y'got it? Those assholes who are passing these Bills aren't going to win for long. But it will be longer if we lose people like you, get what I'm saying? Delete this if you want, as it isn't news. Unless this counts:
News Flash
YOU MATTER!!!
If you didn't, there wouldn't be so many dick bags trying to erase you. Live in spite if you have to, but live. Because even if we lose vote after vote, the only battle lost is the one we don't fight. I'm sorry things are bad, but I promise it will get better. Y'hear me? Things. Will. Get. Better.
First, I just want to say thank you so much. Sometimes, the headlines DO get to me, but it's nice to know that despite the terrible things that may happen, there are still people like you, anon, spreading kindness. Sometimes, a kind word is all it takes to help someone.
That's why I'm taking the time to answer this ask and put it out there when I normally only post news. I think in stressful times like this, everyone could use a little compassion. It's important not to get swept up in the bad news, in the next horrible headline. Sometimes it's near impossible to find a silver lining, but it's important to keep trying. To keep on keeping on, because what other option is there?
And I know, even when things seem bleakest, that there are still good people doing good things. Thank you again, and I hope your words can brighten somebody else's day, too.
