“Elsbeth” has finalized its plans for the 2024 Emmys.

Let’s circulate some facts around the Emmy selection process. Because as per usual, most of the fandom (specifically AAs) don’t get how it works.

To get on the ballot sheet, either the show or actor pays for the award submission. None of the entries across the categories were selected based on merit.

Kripke/Rogan and team …or the actors themselves can submit their entries for consideration (it’s widely done and accepted practice) by the April deadline. The fees to enter are around $300 to submit eligible work. Over 9000 entries are submitted each year across 127 categories.

During the window of June 15-26 those 9000+ entries get voted on my the 25,000 members of the TV Academy, that select the nominees that will be announced on July 12. Then those nominees get voted on and announced at the awards ceremony in September.

So it’s not a big deal or “win” that AAs think it is — since Jensen or Kripke just paid the $300 entry fee to be on the list for consideration.

That’s why Amazon/Kripke/Rogan team does the big promotional push, videos, events and panels to elevate the awareness of those submissions for those in the TV Academy to vote for them and get them on the short list of nominees (typically 8 per category).

I always wondered how that worked. Thank you for enlightening me and whoever else reads this! (Though probably not the AAs that should read this, lol.)

I thought the lists seemed pretty large so it makes sense that all it takes is an entry fee.

I'll definitely be interested to see if the team behind TB was able to make any grounds with their FYC campaign.

Former tennis star Patrick Zweig and up-and-coming actress cozy up at intimate dinner

On Friday, the pair grabbed Italian at a notoriously hard-to-get-into restaurant. The couple shared dishes and drinks and seemed to be enjoying each other’s company. 

Zweig, 29, recently retired after a season that ended in injury. His retirement came after a series of scandals, most notably being a risqué leak of his camera roll. 

At 29 herself, she is coming off the heels of a very busy award season. Taking home her first Best Actress Emmy and BAFTA awards, she also recently received her second ensemble cast award.

The two seem to be an interesting pair, having finished wrapping a movie they were both working on in late October. The unlikely friendship comes on the heels of murmurs about a potential relationship.

“They’ve been enjoying their newfound friendship. It's rare for her to find someone with similar life experiences that she can genuinely bond with,” an insider told us. 

We have to wonder what they discussed over dinner.

Tension at the world premiere?

This weekend marked the world premiere of a film that has been generating a lot of Oscar buzz. The first reviews have been mostly positive, despite the very large elephant in the room.

The average onlooker couldn’t help but notice the physical distance between Zweig and the principal actress in the film during the premiere. Despite both being there, neither were photographed together throughout the entire event. The distance feels particularly charged, considering the pair made a movie of their own not too long ago.

It’s so funny you say this. I have a friend who works for the production side of one of those really big entertainment magazines who does those roundtable for actors who are in talks for receiving awards. His girlfriend was just in one, and my friend told me that he was there and super supportive the whole time. Like, bringing her coffee the way she likes it, hyping her up during the photoshoot, and everything in between. Obviously we saw the worst of them a few months back, but they’re a pretty cute couple. I also heard somewhere that they’re engaged? But I don’t know if I believe it.

Analyzing the metaphorical connection between Squid Game/Round 6 and the movie Parasite.

Before we begin, it is important to know that these two films are different metaphors for social inequality in South Korea; a social factor that is caused by:

• Gender discrimination: women receive 36% less than men;

• Racial inequality: immigrants face difficulties.

• School bullying: 15% of students report it.

• Stress and mental health problems.

Now let's analyze the metaphors of the two works and how they resemble each other, despite the different ways in which criticism is portrayed in both.

SQUID GAME:

The metaphor in the form of social criticism shows us how human beings subject themselves to absurd situations when there is no other option, and how those above the lower class have control over that class and over society (politicians, millionaires, businessmen, among other important positions).

Here are the points I gathered to write my review:

• Games portray the need, fear about society and (de)valuation of life. Players both value and devalue their lives as they choose to continue playing, even when they see people die, because the combination of the need for money + greed (this greed that equals the lower class to the upper class, showing us that some of those who are above were also inferior), does not make them want to stop because the world out there will humiliate them, devalue them and kill them little by little, just as it happens in the game.

• No matter how superior you think you are to someone, whether it's due to intellectual, social or racial level, within the game everyone is humiliating themselves equally because they need the same thing: money (representing not only the literal money that the lower class needs, but also social validation, the minimum of respect, to be taken seriously).

• The real world is no different from the game: politics controls society as the boss and guards control the game; work (or lack thereof), represented by sadistic games, is necessary to obtain money and social validation.

• Bad people are just as sadistic as the controllers of society and the game. Since, in both seasons, bad people were responsible for sowing chaos among the players, killing each other before the games even started. People in society don't care if you need it as much as they do (even if they are in the same social class as you), they will walk all over you if they have the opportunity.

The sadism of the upper class.

The controllers watch the players kill each other and are killed during the games with class and tranquility, not lifting a finger to help. The villainy of the series represents how those above do nothing to change (even though they could),because they don't want to give up their money, because they don't care, because they've been consumed by greed for a long time.

• We are > always < being controlled by someone above us.

In both Season 1 and Season 2 we see 456 approaching and becoming attached to Player 001 (the first being the old man, and the second being Inho), both Bosses of the game infiltrated among the lower class. I observed this detail as a suggestion that there will ALWAYS be someone above controlling those below, even people in our daily lives. It is unconscious, but it is a form of submission; we obey those above us because it is moral to follow the rules. From teachers above students, parents above children, to bosses above employees and politicians above citizens.

I am passionate about the way film directors manage to fit these criticisms in such creative metaphors. It's like in The Matrix; which suggests that we all live in a control system, with the metaphor of Artificial Intelligence. It's so different from Squid Game, but at the same time the same.

In 2022, Lee Jung-Jae won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor for Squid Game. The series received 14 nominations in total and won 6 (including Best Director).

Lee Jung-Jae made history by becoming the first Asian man to win this award.

PARASITE:

The metaphor here is less "fantastical" than in Round 6, leaning towards the more realistic side of the critique.

A poor family is hired to work in the house of a rich family, but it is not as simple as it seems. Tired of extreme poverty and a difficult life, The family devises a plan to gradually infiltrate the wealthy family one by one, until they are all working in the house.

They begin to take over the wealthy family's house as time goes by, but the film wanders through situations where social criticism masterfully made by Bong Jon-Hoo, it surprises and terrifies us in the face of such inequality.

The place where the poor family lives is well below the streets above, and they have to go down very long stairs to get there (it is interesting because it metaphorically shows how the lower class is so far below, that they live in a place where the sun barely touches).

At a certain point in the film, the poor family finds a man in a terrible situation, living hidden below the house of the rich family (once again, there is always someone below, even below the lower class. It can always get worse), and when they find this man, the mother of the poor family does not even listen to him, picks up the phone and says she is going to call the police; this scene suggests a lack of empathy that can be present even in the most needy. She did not even think that she herself could be in that man's place if she had not gotten a job in the house of the rich; she forgot that she is also inferior, but, as I said, there will always be someone worse off; and that is when people feel superior, even knowing that they are not.

Just like in Squid Game, in Parasite we see social inequality represented in two uncomfortable, different but equal ways.

Players vs. Bosses / Poor vs. Rich = Us (society, lower class) vs. Them (politics, industries, corporations, digital influences, upper class)

Below = Players / Poor family

Above = Bosses (001, guards) / Rich family

Metaphor: poverty, financial need/validation/respect = Games / Job in the rich house

Metaphor: politics, industries, companies, millionaires = Boss/001/guards / Rich family

The series and film have been widely awarded and recognized for their metaphorical perfection and cinematic work.

In 2020, Bong Jon-Hoo won the Oscar for Best Director, Best Film, Best International Feature Film and Best Original Screenplay for Parasite.

There is a lot of xenophobia behind the industries, so it is important to remember and highlight the victory of these great artists. Korean cinema is incredible, but it is undervalued.

So, it was recently announced that the new season of The Last Of Us will premiere in April. If you’re a little disappointed that the exact date wasn’t announced, I did a little bit of sleuthing and I’m pretty sure I know what day the season will premiere.

First off, the first season aired on Sunday nights. Because the show did very well, I don’t think they’ll change this for Season 2. So season 2 will premiere on a Sunday, taking us from 30 possible days to 4 possible days right off the bat.

Next, the season will consist of 7 episodes, and will run for 7 straight weeks. In order for the whole season to compete for Emmy Awards this year, the season finale must air prior to the submission deadline, which is May 31st. That means the LATEST Sunday that the show can premiere on is April 13th. But April 6th is also a valid option… or is it?

It turns out that another big HBO show, The White Lotus, will be premiering a new season on Sundays this year. The season premiere will be on February 16th, and since the season will have eight episodes, the finale will air on… April 6th.

Now, I highly doubt that HBO will air the Last Of Us season premiere on the same night as the White Lotus season finale, especially since the Last Of Us season premiere is rumored to be feature-length. Therefore, it makes much more sense for HBO to wait a week.

TL,DR; Season 2 of The Last Of Us will premiere on April 13th, 2025.

ICYMI: The Chilean Star Wars Visions short, "In the Stars" was inspired by the genocide of the Selk'nam, an indigenous group in Patagonia.

This official recognition also includes the Chilean government admitting its fault in the genocide publicly, which is a really big deal.

Also, a movie about the Selk'nam genocide, "The Settlers" (Los Colonos), which won an award at Cannes, was also just selected by the Chilean Film Academy as Chile's entry for the Oscars this year (and will be coming out for wider audiences soon!):

"In the Stars", sadly, was disqualified from the Emmys this year on a TECHNICALITY - there will be NO short form animated entries this year because of a mess behind the scenes.

All that being said, it's wonderful news for the Selk'nam this week, and it's really cool when Star Wars reflects a real world struggle against fascism.

Hollywood call for withdrawing Bisan Owda's Emmy Nomination - DENIED

Creative Community for Peace, a pro-Israel nonprofit organization, called for the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences to rescind an Emmy nomination for Bisan Atef Owda, a Palestinian journalist. Owda was nominated by NATAS in the Outstanding Hard News Feature Story: Short Form category, for the series “It’s Bisan From Gaza and I’m Still Alive.” They allege that Owda has documented ties to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), a United States-designated terrorist organization. The letter, was signed by More than 150 entertainment industry leaders, including the likes of Debra Messing, Selma Blair, Sherry Lansing, Rick Rosen, Haim Saban, and Michael Rotenberg, among others.

Thank you for your letter of August 19, 2024, concerning the nomination of “It’s Bisan From Gaza and I’m Still Alive” for a 2024 News & Documentary Emmy Award. The News & Documentary Emmys have recognized excellence in television journalism for nearly half a century. The honored programs and reports have taken viewers to the front lines of every world conflict, probed political and cultural divides, and sought to illuminate even the darkest circumstances. I don’t see The Boys or anyone from the boys being predicted as a nominee. If they do get voted — that WOULD be amazing bc the members of the TV academy voted for that entry enough times to score a nomination seat.

But otherwise, is anyone really surprised that Kripke would submit Jensen (his “boy” and boner for crush) for consideration. And really wouldn’t surprise me if Jensen submitted his entry himself. $300 is pocket change for him or Kripke, and a lot of actors submit their own entries for consideration.

Drama Predictions

It looks like nearly every show that falls remotely under the drama category is listed as a consideration, and it's some tough competition this year. These predictions seem fairly accurate. Plus, like others have shared, TB season 3 wasn't as good as the first two, and it aired shortly after the previous years Emmy submissions closed, which means it's not as prevalent in the minds of voters. I'll definitely be surprised if there are any major nominations for The Boys.

(Not surprised at all either Jensen or Kripke added his name to the list. Thankfully, the other actors were also added, otherwise it might look like even more favoritism that I'm sure TB actors would love. /s/)

The Television Academy today announced rules changes for the 77th Emmy Awards in 2025, which redefines eligibility for Guest Performers to exclude those who already have been nominated for the role in the lead or supporting categories.

There is also an expanded eligibility in the Directing category as well as tweaks in eligibility for Casting and Main Title Theme Music submissions.

Episode Submissions for the 75th Emmys Awards Find Internal Competition at its Highest in Several Categories

I don't necessarily want to be too hard on Sudeikis because like, I've never written a tv show, but at the same time I will be because I don't think he had the skill level to lead the 3rd season on his own the way he did, and it shows. I Know the show is called Ted Lasso but it honestly felt like he was too wrapped up in providing himself with moments to shine that he forgot about wrapping up huge plot points for other characters and for some reason decided their time was better spent wasted on weird side plots. If I was a suspicious person, I'd honestly say that it felt like he was sabotaging other actors by either turning them into one dimensional cut outs of themselves with no depth (Roy), dropping huge issues for the character and then completely washing over them, and also forcing a highly emotional moment by a great actor to be a farce (Jamie), or neglecting any actual potential character development and sacrificing a well developed character for a cheap shot at "yas girl boss" (Keeley)

hmm i know a lot of people blame the bad pacing and super long episodes on Bill Lawrence's departure and Jason's lack of show-running knowledge. I'm not saying he didn't make the problem worse in s3, but to be fair I think that was already well underway as a problem in s2 (when i think Lawrence was still involved?), so I don't really blame him alone. The pacing was only tight and great in the first season and then it went downhill from there.

As for the character stuff...I disagree that Sudeikis was only concerned with writing himself moments to shine (and if it’s true he did a terrible job of it lmao), because imo Ted's character is just as much of a sloppily-written mess in s3 as the rest of them (and also I think Ted's plot was less central in s3 than it was in s2 especially). Apart from the scene with Ted and his mom at the end of Mom City and maybe his season finale locker room speech, I can't really think of any scenes that are standout in terms of really emphasizing Jason's acting range/serving as award-fodder.

I also strongly disagree that he was intentionally sabotaging his fellow actors by giving them bad plots LOL. Actually I think it was quite the opposite, in that he was extremely focused on giving each of the others a “highlight reel" episode to present to the Emmys committee. Like, you can look at the season and immediately pick out which episode was written for each emmy submission (Paris is Juno's episode, Chelsea is Brett's episode [still shocked he didn't submit it tbh], International Break is Hannah's episode, etc.) Like, Mom City was clearly written with Phil winning his emmy at the forefront of the writer's room minds, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. heck, that's my favorite episode of the season! (side note that I agree with you that Jason is to blame for THAT jamie boot room scene though because like wow was that bad directing, and the bts video shows he was the one telling Phil to play it like that lmao). But i do think the segmented structure of the episodes probably did contribute to the pacing problems and the lack of cohesiveness in the season as a whole.

(I also don’t think Roy was one-dimensional in s3 🫢. Apart from a few things that didn't quite land for me, I really liked where they took Roy's arc this season on the whole. IMO they gave him more depth by really diving into his insecurities, showing him as a leader with Isaac, learning to be a friend to Jamie, coming into his own as a coach and a person, going to therapy and becoming manager. ANYWAY, in my opinion Jason's biggest crime was being so rigidly committed to the three season vision of the show he dreamt up in the beginning, even when the show and plots had gotten too big for that original vision to contain. Season 3 could have been separated into two seasons easily and it would have given them the time they desperately needed to address many of the characters and relationships in a much better and holistic way, as well as dedicate more time to thoughtful endings for all of the main plots.
