i'm gonna be honest here and say that It baffles me that Mickey 17 didn’t land well with audiences...I literally don't get it. we always complain about hollywood being obsessed with sequels reboots and superhero fatigue and yet, when we get an original sci fi movie, it suddenly gets a lukewarm reception?!?! idk what went wrong but i'd rather have an ambitious and genuine sci-fi movie that takes risks than another generic blockbuster. who's with me

This is the second boon ho film I've seen and I will be running to go watch the rest of his work now but I gotta talk about the moment I realized I personally loved this man's vision.

When mickey gets saved by the critters he tells them he's good meat. That he's worth eating. And I think if a different actor or director did that shot it wouldve come off as a quip to make sure the "monster" isn't gonna change its mind and eat you. But I just felt devastated when he said it and I hadn't even had the full story yet. Because I knew he meant it.

and worst of all, up till this point it's the first time he's actually defending himself, particularly his worth. He's been told in every way possible that he is trash. Garbage made from garbage that will be garbage again and his only contribution to society lies in how good he can die. Even the loan shark who forced him off planet only cared about how interestingly he could die. So when these creatures save him it must be because he's not good enough at the only thing he's good at. And that makes him sadder than any death he's had. And he's not even thinking about multiples or his job atp!!! he is simply seeking validation from something other than his job that he's good garbage!!! AAAAAHHHHUGHHHHH!!!!!

It's only when Nash tells him they saved him that he understands that's what they did. And Gods I just love Nasha so damn much! she loves him so so much and he doesn't see it yet but she truly values the love he gives her and that love makes him realize his worth (mickey 18 specifically) So when Kenneth says the critters didn't eat him cause he's garbage in the third act, mickey can finally hear how foolish that belief was. 😭

Mickey 17 proposes a powerful addition to the 'would you fuck your clone debate', going so far as to ask 'what if you wanted to fuck your clone but your clone didn't want to fuck you?'

Mickey 17 was great and if you think of it as a Bong Joon Ho film as opposed to the next film by the guy who made Parasite you'd enjoy it a lot more. I felt it had similarities with Okja and The Host more so than Parasite and honestly I'm glad that he's still making intelligent thoughtful heartfelt movies about the personification of creatures moving beyond what it is to be human to what it is to be simply good.
