Happy 77th Birthday to Danny Glover.
Born July 22, 1946, He is an actor and film director. He is widely known for his lead role as Roger Murtaugh in the Lethal Weapon film series. He also had leading roles in his films included The Color Purple, To Sleep with Anger, Predator 2, Angels in the Outfield, and Operation Dumbo Drop.
Glover has prominent supporting roles in Silverado, Witness, A Rage in Harlem, Dreamgirls, Shooter, Death at a Funeral, Beyond the Lights, Sorry to Bother You, The Last Black Man in San Francisco, The Dead Don't Die, Lonesome Dove and Jumanji: The Next Level.
An Actor with a Cause
Daniel Lebern “Danny” Glover is an African American actor, film director and political activist. Glover is well known for his roles as Detective Sergeant Roger Murtaugh in the Lethal Weapon film series and Mr. Albert Johnson in The Color Purple. A versatile actor on screen, stage and television, Danny Glover has also become known for his community activism and philanthropic work. In March 1998 he was appointed a United Nations goodwill ambassador. For more than 30 years, Glover has been trying to make a biopic about Toussaint Louverture, who led a successful rebellion in the 18th century.
Glover was born on July 22, 1946 in San Francisco, California, to Carrie (Hunley) and James Glover. His parents were postal workers, active in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). He attended George Washington High School in San Francisco, and the San Francisco State University (SFSU) in the late 1960s, without graduating. SFSU later awarded him an honorary degree. While attending SFSU, Glover was a member of the Black Students Union, which, along with the Third World Liberation Front and the American Federation of Teachers, collaborated in a five-month student-led strike to establish a Department of Black Studies. The strike was the longest student walkout in U.S. history. It helped create not only the first Department of Black Studies but also the first School of Ethnic Studies in the United States.
Glover trained at the Black Actors’ Workshop of the American Conservatory Theater. He made his Broadway debut in Athol Fugard’s production Master Harold…and the Boys, which led to his first leading role in the 1984 film Places in the Heart, which was nominated for the Best Picture Oscar. The following year, Glover starred in two more Best Picture nominees: Peter Weir’s Witnessand Steven Spielberg’s The Color Purple. In 1987, Glover partnered with Mel Gibson in the first Lethal Weaponfilm and went on to star in three hugely successfulLethal Weapon sequels.
In 1994 he made his directorial debut with the Showtime channel short film Override. Also in 1994, Glover and actor Ben Guillory formed the Robey Theatre Company in Los Angeles, focusing on theatre by and about Black people. During his career, he has made several cameos, appearing, for example, in the Michael Jackson video “Liberian Girl” of 1987. Glover earned top billing for the first time in Predator 2, the sequel to the sci-fi action film Predator. That same year he starred in Charles Burnett’s To Sleep with Anger, for which which he executive produced and for which he won an Independent Spirit Award for Best Actor. On the small screen, Glover won an Image Award and a Cable ACE Award and earned an Emmy nomination for his performance in the title role of the HBO movie Mandela. He has also received Emmy nominations for his work in the acclaimed miniseries Lonesome Dove and the telefilm Freedom Song. As a director, he earned a Daytime Emmy nomination for Showtime’s Just a Dream.
Glover has had a variety of film, stage, and television roles, but as also gained respect for his wide-reaching community activism and philanthropic efforts, with a particular emphasis on advocacy for economic justice, and access to health care and education programs in the United States and Africa. For these efforts, Glover received a 2006 DGA Honor. Internationally, Glover has served as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Program from 1998-2004, focusing on issues of poverty, disease, and economic development in Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean, and serves as UNICEF Ambassador.
In 2005, Glover co-founded Louverture Films dedicated to the development and production of films of historical relevance, social purpose, commercial value and artistic integrity. For more than 30 years, Glover has been trying to make a film biography of Toussaint Louverture for his directorial debut. According to Glover, the film lacked ‘whyte heroes’, and hence whyte producers refuse to financially support the project unless the lead is surrounded by fictionalized historically inaccurate whyte heroes. In May 2006, the film had included cast members Wesley Snipes, Angela Bassett, Don Cheadle, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Roger Guenveur Smith, Mos Def, Isaach de Bankolé, and Richard Bohringer. Production, estimated to cost $30 million, was planned to begin in Poland, filming from late 2006 into early 2007. In May 2007, President of Venezuela Hugo Chávez contributed $18 million to fund the production of Toussaint for Glover, who is a prominent U.S. supporter of Chávez. The contribution annoyed some Venezuelan filmmakers, who said the money could have funded other homegrown films and that Glover’s film was not even about Venezuela. In April 2008, the Venezuelan National Assembly authorized an additional $9,840,505 for Glover’s film, which is still in planning.
On April 6, 2009, Glover was given a chieftaincy title in Imo State, Nigeria. Glover was given the title Enyioma of Nkwerre, which means A Good Friend in the language of the Igbo people of Eastern Nigeria.

Today in Fandom History: January 29
Fandom: Actors
January 29, 1945, Tom Selleck was born. Film producer and actor in both television and movies, Selleck has made his name in a variety of genres, most notably westerns, crime, and comedy. The first time I ever saw Selleck was actually during his run on Friends as Dr. Richard Burke, which was fantastic, so I searched out some more of his work. He’s starred in the classic 80′s comedy Three Men and a Baby and its sequel, Three Men and a Little Lady, Runaway, Twelve Mile Road, The Shadow Riders, Her Alibi, Crossfire Trail, Mr. Baseball, and the Jesse Stone movie series.
Selleck’s won one Primetime Emmy, was nominated for six others, won two Golden Apples for Male Star of the Year, one Golden Globe, was nominated for six others, and won five People’s Choice Awards. He also has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. I’m still educating myself on his filmography, but if I could only recommend one of his works to you, it would be Three Men and a Baby, simply because it is an 80′s classic and is hilarious. Actor, producer, spokesman for the NRA, and philanthropist, Selleck has made a big mark in movie history and is fairly well known in pop culture as well.
Happy 77th Tom Selleck!

[Joker] took home two statuettes, the most of any comic book movie in Globes history. Joaquin Phoenix won for best performance by actor in a motion picture - drama, acknowledging he was a "pain in the ass" for filmmaker Todd Phillips as he brought to life the troubled character of Arthur Fleck, while composer Hildur Gudnadóttir received the Globe for best original score - motion picture, making her the first woman to win the award solo, 19 years after Gladiator's Lisa Gerrard shared the honor alongside Hans Zimmer. — The Hollywood Reporter
With two wins, Joker” is now the most awarded comic book film in Golden Globes history. Joaquin Phoenix’s acting win is the second time a performer has won a Globe for playing the Joker. Heath Ledger won the supporting actor prize in 2009 for his turn as the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight.” [...] Hildur Guðnadóttir’s Best Original Score win is even more historic for the Golden Globes, making the Icelandic composer the first solo woman to win the music category prize. Lisa Gerrard shared the Globe for Best Original Score with Hans Zimmer nearly two decades ago for their work on “Gladiator.” Guðnadóttir’s historic Globes victory raises her visibility in the Oscar race for Best Original Score. [...] Guðnadóttir won an Emmy last year for her work on “Chernobyl,” so her profile is certainly on the rise ahead of Oscar nominations later this month. — IndieWire
Congratulations to Hildur Guðnadóttir on winning Best Original Score and Joaquin Phoenix on winning Best Actor (Drama) at the 77th annual Golden Globe Awards!

British Women in Animation
Sarah Kennedy is doing a documentary on female animators. I am doing some research and finding it so interesting. Back in the day, women weren’t really valued. They weren’t even classed as artists, they were degraded and looked down upon. They rarely even got credited for the work they did. It appals me to think that this was acceptable.
In this blog I will research British female animators.
Suzanah (Suzie) Clare Templeton (born 1967 in Hampshire, England) is an award-winning British animator. Her film Peter and the Wolf has won several awards, including the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 2008.
Stanley (1999) is the winner of the 2001 Golden Sun Award, the 2000 Best College Student Animation Award of the Nashville Independent Film Festival, the 2000 Best Animation Award for the International Short Film Festival of Berlin, and many others.
Dog (2001) is the winner of the 2002 British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) in Short Animation and many others.
Peter and the Wolf (2006) is the winner of the 2008 Academy Award for Best Short Film, the 2006 British Animation Award for Best TV Special, the 2007 Pulcinella Ward for Best European Programme, the 2007 Grand Prix and Audience Award Annecy at the French Animation Festival, the 2007 Golden Rose for Performing Arts at the Rose D'or Festival in Switzerland, the 2007 Special Prize at the Ukraine Animated Film Festival, and the 2008 Special Jury Award of the Lucca Animation Festival in Italy.
Joy Batchelor (12 May 1914 – 14 May 1991) was an English animator, director, screenwriter, and producer. She married John Halas in 1940 and subsequently co-established Halas and Batchelor cartoons, whose best known production is the animated feature film Animal Farm (1954), which made her the first woman director of an animated feature since Lotte Reiniger. Together they created over 2000 shorts/films, and produced roughly 70 propaganda pieces during World War II for the British government. She helped co-write, write, animate, produce, and direct many of their productions.
One of her projects as an art director was Cinerama Holiday (1955). Joy directed and wrote Ruddigore (1967), a television-film adaptation of W.S. Gilbert's opera of the same name, which became the first opera to be adapted into an animated film. She later worked in television, directing series, including animated shows like The Jackson 5ive (1971). Batchelor died on 14 May 1991, just two days after her 77th birthday.
Between 1975 and 1980, Sheila Graber created a selection of animated shorts which were shown worldwide. One animation, Mondrian, about the Dutch painter Piet Mondrian was screened at the Tate Gallery, Mondrian’s own house in the Netherlands, the Open University and British Broadcasting Corporation's children's television series Blue Peter.[2]
By 1975, Graber was working for Filmfair, and created the animation for Paddington Bear and Mr and Mrs Brown for the television series Paddington.[1] She also animated the 1983 BBC series Just So Stories, adapted from a collection of children's stories of the same name, written by Rudyard Kipling.[3]
In 1980, newly divorced, Sheila left her role as head of Creative Studies at a large comprehensive school to begin teaching animation classes in Tunisia and Caracas, and pursue a career as a full-time professional artist and animator.
I love the fact that Sheila became an animation teacher. That is amazing!
Joanna Quinn was born in Birmingham, England in 1962 and grew up in North London. Quinn's first film Girls Night Out was completed in 1987 and won three awards at the Annecy Film Festival. Quinn has won over 90 international awards, including 2 Emmy awards, 4 Bafta awards and Jury prizes at all the major animation festivals. One of her films, Famous Fred (1997), received an Academy Award nomination. Quinn was awarded the Leonardo da Vinci International Art Award in 1996. In 2006 her film Dreams and Desires won Grand Prix at World Festival of Animated Film
Alison de Vere (16 September 1927 – 2 January 2001), while married also known as Alison Weschke, was a British animator, known for her animated short films The Black Dog and Psyche and Eros. Born in Peshawar into a British military family, de Vere studied art in Brighton and at the Royal Academy. She worked as a background designer at Halas and Batchelor studio beginning in 1951, at a time when women were unheard of in creative leadership roles in British animation. Nonetheless she took the leadership of the animation unit of Guild Television Services in 1957. During the 1960s, she worked as a freelancer, but joined TVC in 1967 to work as design director on the Beatles film Yellow Submarine, in which she had a cameo.
Jackie Cockle, born 1950 in Portsmouth, is a British stop frame animation specialist. She is the creator and creative producer of the pre-school animation Timmy Time, creative producer of Bob the Builder and Brambly Hedge, director of The Wind in the Willows and more. Cockle, a graduate of the Manchester College of Art and Design, has won 3 Bafta awards: one in the best animation category for Bob the Builder 30 minute special (2002) and two in the pre-school animation for Timmy Time (2010, 2013) - a production of the Bristol-based Aardman Animations.
Eunice Macaulay (nee Eunice Bagley) (1923 – 2013) was a British-born Academy Award–winning animator whose credits range from animation to writing, directing, and producing. She shifted into animation when a Christmas card she had designed got her a job with Gaumont British Animation (later part of the Rank Organisation) in 1948. Starting out as a tracer, she went on to hold nearly every position in animation, including background artist, ink and paint supervisor, rendering supervisor, writer, animator, producer, and director.
Dianne Jackson (July 28, 1941 – December 31, 1992) was an English animation director, best known for The Snowman, made in 1982 and subsequently repeated every Christmas on Channel 4 in the United Kingdom.
She had a long career as an animator, and her earliest credit was for The Beatles' Yellow Submarine in 1968. She is particularly noted for recreating the style of the original artists in her animations, for example of Raymond Briggs's picture book, The Snowman.
She also directed Granpa by John Burningham in 1989 and was due to direct Raymond Briggs' Father Christmas in 1991, having completed storyboarding for the film, although due to her illness this was directed by Dave Unwin. She also planned the first series of animated adaptations of the tales of Beatrix Potter as The World of Peter Rabbit and Friends. However, she died of cancer on New Year's Eve 1992 at the age of 51. The series episode "The Tailor of Gloucester" is dedicated to her memory

Mack stated in an interview that "[She] chose to work in film because the material renders color and texture in a way that resonates with a lot of [her] work”.
Many of Jodie Mack's films are stop motion animations that feature everyday fabrics and textiles or recycled materials like magazine clippings or newspaper scraps.

Eddie Murphy & Kerry Washington Win Their FIRST EMMY Awards! + Ron Cephas Jones & Jasmine Become First Father-Daughter EMMY Winners!
It was a virtual night of Creative Arts EMMY firsts for Eddie Murphy, Kerry Washington, Ron Cephas Jones and his daughter Jasmine Cephas Jones. Celebrate their wins inside…
Before tonight's Primetime Emmys, the 2020 Creative Arts EMMYs went down virtually where several YBF celebs copped an award for the first time. This year, the Creative Arts EMMYs hosted five ceremonies over several nights and last night’s virtual show was the final one with statuettes handed out in 29 categories.
Comedian/actor Eddie Murphy was an early Primetime EMMY winner. After landing five nominations throughout his career, the famed comedian finally nabbed his first ever Primetime EMMY award for hosting Saturday Night Live in the Gust Actor Comedy Series category.
And just like that, Eddie Murphy is an #Emmy winner! He just earned his first statuette for Outstanding Guest Actor In A Comedy Series for hosting @nbcsnl. pic.twitter.com/5NzN63jTxL

Eddie’s return to SNL after 35 years was epic and it resulted in huge ratings for the network. He brought the homies Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle and Tracey Morgan along (and cast member Kenan Thompson). He also reprised several of his famed SNL characters such as Gumby, Buckwheat, Mr. Robinson, and more.

“Thank you to everybody at the Emmys,” Eddie said. “Thank you so much for giving me an Emmy. I don’t have an Emmy. This is 40 years since I started Saturday Night Live, this is my first Emmy, so thank you so much. I want to thank Lorne Michaels for putting this whole thing together, and making this happen. And I want to thank, the cast, the writers and the crew at SNL. This was a very, very special thing for me to come back and have the show turn out the way it did. I’m still floating from it. And thank you to everybody for giving me an Emmy.”
After nabbing his first EMMY, Eddie appeared in the Creative Arts Emmy virtual backstage where he talked about why he pumped the breaks on his return to stand-up comedy.
“These are really serious times, no times for joking,” he said, answering a question about the importance of comedic commentary today.
“I don’t know right now if there should be any comedic commentary. We’re still right in the middle of everything,” he explained.
With everything going on right now (Coronavirus, #BlackLivesMatter movement and the upcoming presidential election), he said he’s holding off on making jokes until next year.
“In a year or so, we’ll be need comedic commentary and some laughs, but now we’re right in this,” he added. “As soon as it’s clear to go back out there, that was the plan, that is the plan.”
Fellow comedian Dave Chappelle nabbed a few Creative Arts EMMY awards for his Sticks & Stones Netflix stand-up comedy special and Eddie addressed the way Dave went about hosting it.
“There was very little joking. He was doing stand-up, but it was, like, serious.”
Facts.
As for another first time winner…
It’s been a long time coming. Finally, Kerry Washington is an EMMY winner.
On Tuesday (Sept. 15th), the “Scandal” actress copped a Creative Arts EMMY Award for her work as an executive producer on ABC’s Live In Front Of A Studio Audience: "All In The Family" And "Good Times."
The special won the award for Outstanding Variety Special (Live) after beating out the 73rd Annual Tony Awards, the 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards, the Oscars and the Super Bowl LIV Halftime Show starring Jennifer Lopez and Shakira. “Thank you for this amazing creative family. It’s such a brilliant team,” Kerry said during the virtual ceremony on Tuesday alongside co-producers Justin Theroux, James Burrows and the legendary Norman Lear.
Later, she hopped on social media to express her excitement:

There was a bit of a mix up when his award was announced. The broadcast voiceover announced “The Outsider’s” Jason Bateman as the winner. However, Ron was the actual winner. After the mixup, the Creative Arts Emmy press room announced an incorrect winner was announced, saying, “the right winner and the right slate, but the voiceover was incorrect."
Meanwhile, Jasmine won the award for Outstanding Actress in a Short Form Comedy or Drama Series for her work on Quibi’s “#FreeRayshawn.”
“As a parent that’s the most fulfilling that I could ever feel at the moment,” Ron said during an interview in the virtual backstage press room. “Winning another Emmy is the icing on the cake, but to see my daughter progress and move into this place where she’s earned an Emmy is beyond words and I tear up every time I think about it to be honest with you. To see my daughter become healthy and happy, that’s a parent’s dream.”
He added, “We always focused on the work ever since she was a little girl, and coming from the theater it’s always been about trying to do good work…when you do what you want to do and you’re happy and you’re healthy that’s the win in itself… When we found out she was nominated, I was expressing to her that’s the win in itself when your work gets acknowledged and the win itself is the icing on the cake that keeps you humble and keeps you hungry.”
Aww! Congrats to the father-daughter duo!
