It’s not often that Roman Torchwick ever allows anyone to see him vulnerable. But right now, he’s almost childlike in the way he speaks - his eyes ever so slightly wide, and his hands, barely managing to hold on to Melodic Cudgel, starting to shake.

Then, all of a sudden, he glowers. Swallowing down every emotion that’s welling up within him, he speaks again, and his next words are coated with a bitter anger.

“If this is some kind of trick, I’m not falling for it. You think you’re clever, do you?”

Taking Out the Trash

This is essentially how I see the story going now that we’re back to Remnant. Jaune and Weiss are definitely gonna settle the score with Cinder, in a Bumbleby v Adam-esque final fight imo. A lot building up to this; Pyrrha, Cinder almost killing Weiss, Penny's sacrifice, Jaune's ongoing conflict with Cinder, the way it would really hit Cinder if Ruby didn't focus on her and goes after Salem instead, the way Cinder thinks Jaune is beneath her and is outraged over the thought that he could have killed her and on and on. Although, I wouldn't be opposed to Ruby being part of that fight.

And hey, Cinder’s already made something of a dumpster fire out of her quest for power. Really her greatest achievements seem to be the result of working with the people around her; Torchwick, Watts, Neo, Emerald and Mercury. Increasingly though, Cinder’s becoming isolated, in no small part due to herself. That's all coinciding with the show’s theme of the importance of trust and cooperation bringing about strength and the resolution of the world’s and individual’s problems. Not hard to imagine where Cinder will wind up after taking the opposite path.

I originally intended to just edit Cinder in place of Marrow in the scene where Weiss is dragging him across the room. Put a good amount of work into fixing up that background, too. But a brilliant suggestion by Mallobaude to add a dumpster in the corner of the room changed my mind, and with a change of scene and a bit more editing we gained the nice scene we see before us now. The reference scene I took the background from is just brilliant, Weiss literally throwing a racist guy in the trash.

Anyway, I thought it was a fun idea to make my own little version of that meme trend I referenced in the 1st panel, with the rest of this little comic putting a bit of a twist on it actually being Weiss who’s all set to take care of Cinder. Hope you all enjoy!

General opinion on mercury?

Merc! That's my sister's blorbo, so I love him. XD

Mercury is one of the few rwby characters who hasn't been severely impacted by bad writing, but that's largely because of how underutilized and ignored he's been.

He's a good character, his motivations are interesting to me simply because he doesn't really seem to have any, but in a way that actually makes sense. His motivations are that he just goes along with whatever is happening, he was raised into a certain life and never thought to doubt it because that's just how things were, and when he finally did snap and kill his father, he decided meeting Cinder and Cinder bringing him into her plans was fate and just went along with it, and just didn't ever really question his place in it even though he knew Cinder was manipulating him and didn't care about him. Even when confronted with the fact that Salem's plans might not be what she presented them as, he barely seemed to care because unlike Emerald he was never actually in this to make a new world. He's like an evil Sonic the Hedgehog, like "It doesn't matter now what happens, I will never give up the fight! Long as the voice inside drives me to run and fight, it doesn't matter who is wrong and who is right" it fits him, just in the evil way.

Also, before everyone got nerfed by bad fight choreography, Mercury was one of the top notch fighters in the show and I won't be taking criticism on that point. Kid dodged lightning

And the other fights we see from him in the early seasons, he's barely even trying, with the exception of Merc V Yang which seems to be the most effort he puts into his fighting that we ever see and we know he still throws the competition.

I'm convinced that if they hadn't downgraded their combat to such a terrible degree, then we would've seen Mercury in even better fights. One of the few characters that I think could probably hold their own against Neo in her prime who ran circles around Yang.

But enough about the combat, because what's really great about Mercury is the potential! Because of his motivations, you can pretty much assign him any story or morality in a re-write that you want without changing his character too much. If Mercury got picked up by Qrow and taken to Ozpin after killing his father instead of getting picked up by Cinder and taken into Salem's circle, he'd have a completely different story and a whole new outlook. If Mercury had been picked up by Sienna Kahn and befriended Adam rather than being picked up by Cinder and befriending Emerald than he'd have a completely different story and a whole new outlook. If Cinder had put Mercury and Emerald on a team with Sun and Neptune instead of being on the team herself with a disguised Neo, he could probably befriend them and have a completely different story and a whole new outlook. If Mercury wound up getting dragged into running away from Salem with Emerald and instead started working with a 'survived the Fall of Beacon Roman Torchwick' who made them join the good side in an effort to beat Salem (which is what I went with for most of my fics lol) he'd have a completely different story and a whole new outlook. Also his potential dynamics outside of Emerald and Cinder are also incredibly interesting (just to be clear, his dynamics with Emerald and Cinder are also interesting but since those are the only dynamics that get any care in the show, I'm skipping over them,) especially if you start having him get a redemption arc. Because the thing about a good redemption arc is that the past doesn't just go away, it still impacts people. Mercury trying to be friends with Ruby, but knowing that the hand he played in Penny's death is always right there in her head is such a good concept. Mercury maybe having something romantic with Yang, but knowing that not only did he cheat and make her think she was losing her mind in the Vytal Tournament, but also helped cause the events that led to so much pain for her is such a good idea. Mercury befriending Nora, but always being aware of 'Pyrrha' hanging over their heads is such a good idea!

Mercury is a character that you can do so much with! The number one problem with Mercury's character is that it's been stagnating and given next to nothing for years. The last time something really interesting happened with his character was in volume six, and that was just one scene, and now volume eight set up 'he might be used more interestingly in the future,' but outside of that, he really hasn't been treated as relevant or important or been given much as a character since volume 3. This has kept him from being affected by the bad writing curse that's made almost every single character who wasn't dead by V3 an idiot, a jerk, or just plain boring, but it's also made him pretty... dry? I don't know the right word, it just feels like I often forget he exists when I'm actually watching the show these days, until he's actually on screen which is rarely. That's a bad thing. Boy literally just showed up in volume eight to remind the audience that he existed before he noped out of the season without doing anything. I wish he was better used, but a part of me hopes Mercury stays away so he stays a generally pretty good character, even if he has to remain a villain to achieve it.

Cinder: Excuse you?

Roman: Cinder, this is important. I really can't afford to lose a buyer right now.

Cinder: What, you think I can't handle an exchange?

Roman: Well, you probably could...if you could keep the blood lust under control.

Cinder: Blood lust? What is that supposed to mean?

Roman: It means you're too trigger-happy. An exchange like this requires a level head.

[Cut to Emerald and Mercury watching TV nearby.]

Mercury: Level head? You're just gonna go, "You got the money?" and "You got the stuff?" back-and-forth for twenty minutes.

Emerald: [laughs]

[Cut back to Roman, Neo, and Cinder.]

Cinder: [ignoring that] I'm very levelheaded.

Neo: [snorts]

Cinder: [glares at her] ... [to Roman] I promise I'm not going to scare away your precious buyer. Now let's go.

Roman: Yeah, um...look...no offense, but how exactly do you think this is gonna play out? Because let me tell ya...no one's gonna do business with you if they know they're likely gonna get a bullet to the head once they hand over the money.

Cinder: Don't you talk down to me. I know how to exchange Dust for money.

Roman: You know how to scheme and intimidate. I don't think you know how to do business.

Cinder: I do so.

Roman: All right, lemme give you a scenario. You're robbing a Dust Shop. What do you do? Tell me step-by-step.

Cinder: Okay, first I- ...do I have henchmen here?

Roman: No, I wanna know what you do flying solo.

Cinder: Okay, fair enough. [ahem] First, I walk in and threaten the shopkeep to unlock the displays...

Roman: All right. Good.

Cinder: Once the displays are empty, I take whatever valuables the customers have, if any are present...

Roman: All right. You're on a roll.

Cinder: Then...I kill all of them and the shopkeep, take the money from the register, and run before the police show up.

Roman: Okay, good- [jump] Wait, what? No! Don't kill the shopkeep!

Neo: [signing] And leave the register alone! You'll make way more money selling the Dust!

Cinder: Yeah, but if I empty the register, I have that money and what I'm gonna get for the Dust.

Roman: No, Neo's right. That's just gonna slow you down. Leave the cash and don't kill the shopkeep. Just get the Dust and go.

Cinder: Why?

Roman: Because the shopkeep is important.

Cinder: No, they aren't. I got the Dust. There's no further use for the shopkeep. They're just a witness who's gonna call the police, so they gotta go.

Roman: No. Don't kill the shopkeep. They're still important.

Neo: [signing] And you don't think you have blood lust...

Mercury (v/o): Just kill the police when they show up!

Roman: Okay, don't- ...I mean, do that if you have to. But don't stick around for that. What you want is a clean getaway.

[Cut to Emerald and Mercury.]

Emerald: Wait, so she can kill the customers and the police, but she can't kill the shopkeep?

[Cut back to Roman, Neo, and Cinder.]

Roman: Because the shopkeep is the only one who's important!

Cinder: How? I got all the Dust.

Roman: Yes. You did. But then what?

Cinder: What?

Roman: You cleaned out the Dust Shop. Now what?

Cinder: I... [frustrated] I sell it all?

Roman: And after that?

Cinder: What?

Roman: You sold it all. Gotta replenish your stock. Where are you gonna get the Dust from?

Cinder: [annoyed] The shop.

Roman: How? You emptied it out and killed the shopkeep. There's no more Dust.

Cinder: What?

Roman: You think that next shipment's gonna order itself? No. You need the shopkeep to do that.

Cinder: Oh, come on. Surely someone else will take the job.

Neo: [signing] Oh, yeah. That's gonna go over well. Everyone's gonna be lining up for that job interview. "Okay, so the previous owner was killed during a robbery and the culprits were never caught. I'm sure you'll be fine, though."

Cinder: [scoff] I'll find a different Dust Shop, then.

Roman: Yeah, I dunno how many Dust Shops you think Vale has, but if you keep killing everyone behind the counter, you're gonna end up having to outsource.

Cinder: [heavy sigh] Why are we even talking about robbing a Dust Shop? We're about to go do an exchange. That's not the same thing.

Roman: Because it's business. Which you apparently have no idea how to do.

[Cut back to Emerald and Mercury.]

Emerald: Still confused about how she can kill the customers, but not the shopkeep. Won't killing the customers scare off future business, and then the Dust Shop will have to shut down?

Mercury: No, no. See, that's when you go back disguised as a customer and make purchases, and then resell what you bought for double. That way the business stays open and you still make a mint.

Emerald: How is one patron gonna keep it alive, though?

Mercury: Just be a regular. Go in every day. That makes it look safe, and then regular customers will pile in.

Emerald: But then you should totally empty the register when you go back to rob the place, since you basically helped fill it.

[Cut back to Roman, Neo, and Cinder. Roman is rubbing his temples in frustration.]

Mercury (v/o): Nah, you sold what you bought for double already. Let the shopkeep have what's in the register. Think of it as tipping the waiter.

Emerald (v/o): Oh, yeah. I guess so. They'll need it to order the next shipment, anyway.

Roman: [lowers hands] Okay. That's it. Everyone in the car.

Cinder: What?

Roman: Get in the car. We're gonna go deal with the buyer, and after that I'm taking you guys to rob a Dust Shop.

Cinder: Wait, what? Why?

Roman: Because I didn't know it was frickin' amateur hour over here. [grumbles as he walks off] Gotta show you people how it's done...

Neo: [signing] I call shotgun! [follows him]

Mercury: Aw, I wanted shotgun...

Emerald: Is he being serious right now?

Roman (v/o): GET IN THE CAR!!!

Cinder: Let's just go. [walks off]

Mercury: Okay, but try not to kill the shopkeep when we get there.

(A rush to figure out Code Stringer’s current main base ensued, for obvious reasons. C did have enough intel to give some hints to what it may be, but this was still an issue. Code Stringer would end up dropping enough of a hint to reveal his location, however, as it was something he couldn’t easily hide, even with invisibility and hover vehicles…resource chains. At the same time, G.A.M.M.A. was prepping an additional firewall to protect the heroes’ robotic troops and allies from Code Stringer’s influence. Meanwhile, Uzi was looking into potential pilots for the Cruise Chaser, Emerald Weapon, and Sapphire Weapon. Neo 3 and Little Buddy already covered the Brute Justice, while Uzi had already chosen the Ruby Weapon as her ride)

Uzi, as a light bulb icon appeared on her visor: Say N, how do you feel about mech riding~? Same goes for V.

Serial designation N: Sure! I love doing anything! (Serial designation V: As long as the mech has swords to stab/cut things with then sure...)

Uzi: Great!...Now, who should pilot the Cruise Chaser?...

*As this was happening, the others were still trying to figure out where exactly Code Stringer was hiding and planning...Jackrow had noticed that the most frequent signs of Syndicate of Steel activity was happening in...the crater where Sweet Jazz City once stood...Did Code Stringer built one of his factory bases there?...*

Emerald V’s Neo: Is it on the Cards?

Could Neo trigger Emerald’s path to redemption? 

In this post I am going to attempt to break down, a theory and a potential path/ story arc for our favorite thief. 

WARNING: NOT SPOILER FREE.

A villain can only be redeemed or set on a path to redemption one of two ways.

1) They show they are conflicted about their current actions

OR

2) They realize the error of their ways.

PRELUDE: THE TIES THAT BIND.

Of all the villains we have seen so far, Emerald Sustrai is the most conflicted, if not the only one who seems she isnt quite on board with Salem’s faction. 

We first saw this sickle of doubt back in Vol 3.

And finally got confirmation in V6E9 Lost, that she is in fact questioning her allegiances, going so far as to voice her doubts to Mercury.

 However, we have been made aware of her motivations for staying and where her true loyalties lie. 

Cinder Fall, took her off the streets, said she would never be hungry again and gave her a purpose

“I owe Cinder everything!” 

We can speculate to the exact nature of Emerald’s feelings towards Cinder but it cannot be denied that they run deep, especially with her emotionally devastated reaction to Cinder’s demise in Vol 5. 

But there is one thing that is glaringly apparent. 

Cinder does not return those feelings or see Emerald as anything else other than her underling or dogs body. 

This is not something that Emerald at the moment is willing to accept even after Mercury gave her some hard truths, in V6E9 Lost.

“You’re in denial. And if you’re gonna start having a crisis of identity or some crap... keep me out of it”

So in order for Emerald to truly set out on the path to redemption she must first accept that Cinder doesnt care for her and make moves to sever ties.

Well, how does Emerald get to the point of accepting the truth and breaking away? 

In order to get to that point we must first look at the difference with which Cinder treats Emerald in comparison to Neo.  

 REFLECTIONS: 

@yurireview​ has a great post titled “Cinder and Neo an unlikely friendship.”, and they make some really interesting points and good observations. I would suggest checking it out. You can head on over to theirs or find it on my blog.

How does Neo tie into this? 

In this scenario, Neo is an unassuming third party. Neo holds no affection or affinity for Cinder. She has merely engaged in a mutually beneficial partnership in order to achieve her goal of avenging, her mentor, Roman’s death.

 She has no ties that bind her to Cinder or Salem’s faction. 

However....

Cinder has always treated Neo with a modicum of begrudging respect, going so far to dare I say, treat her as an equal. 

Respecting Neo’s ground rules and space,

Accepting Neo’s sass,

Even complimenting her on a job well done, when Neo showed initiative. 

If we mirror this with the way that Cinder chastised Emerald about doing something similar. 

Cinder in no way sees Emerald as an equal. She sees her someone who should do as she dictates,  as a ‘disciple’, an interesting choice of word given Cinder’s ego mania, she sees herself as above Emerald and Mercury, something akin to a God.

When meeting Adam Taurus, Emerald and Mercury kneel behind Cinder.

Unlike with Neo, they will never be on equal footing.

CATALYST: MAKING THE CUT.

We know that Emerald has sought out to change her and Cinder’s roles of subordinate and ‘boss’ from the formal to the informal, something almost akin to friendship.

No acknowledgement of reciprocation has ever come from Cinder’s side. 

I am sure that in the future when Emerald and Cinder are finally reunited that Emerald will not only be ecstatic to see her but will also be tripping over herself to apologize profusely at leaving Cinder behind and no doubt Cinder will be dismissive of this emotional familiarity, crushing Emerald in the process.   

However between Cinder and Neo the reciprocation of the informal has been acknowledged, going so far as to share a ‘light banter’ and a joke. 

 If this back and forth continues between the pair in Emerald’s company, especially so close on the heels of being brushed aside. Perceiving someone else as receiving what she has so badly craved will not doubt sow the seeds of jealousy. 

THE SET UP:

(Simply, Cinder could leave Emerald behind to die at a later stage, which would be entirely in character, as a punishment for the perceived betrayal of leaving her behind in Haven, though Hazel, Emerald and Mercury could have no way of knowing that Cinder survived the fall, even if they went down to the chamber to investigate, but that isnt something that Cinder would likely take into consideration.

It would be a rude awakening for our thief. But it begs the question, Would it be enough? Or would Emerald believe it is something she deserves?)

It is doubtful.

 Emerald will need something far deeper than that to shake her loyalty. Something that cuts her to the bone.

Seeing she has been easily replaced with someone far more useful, perhaps?

It may even fuel the fires of a confrontation.

FACE OFF: THE BATTLE OF THE SEMBLANCES. 

As of the end of Vol 6, all of Salem’s faction are descending on Atlas giving way to the perfect opportunity for the above scenario to play out. 

The question is who would win. 

No doubt in 1v1, Neo would come out the victor. Though Emerald should not be written off entirely. Unfortunately we have not seen the thief go full hog 1v1 with a person but we have seen her take a number of Grimm, approaching the situation with a confidence that suggests that she is more than capable of handling herself.  

We have seen on a number of occasions in a 1v1 that Neo is more than well equipped to take on whom ever steps into the ring and also shrewd enough to know when she is out matched. 

Neo has also learned under Roman’s tutelage that sometimes it is prudent to inconvenience yourself to the detriment of the bigger picture and to achieve your goal at a later date. Opening up the possibility to Neo simply throwing a fight in order to stay close to her enemy.

Now that the hand to hand is out of the way, it is the semblances that have the potential to make an Emerald v’s Neo interesting. 

The pair have quite similar semblances from different ends of the spectrum, but both deal with illusions in some capacity. 

Emerald’s can twist her opponent's mind, make them see what isnt there, to the point that an opponent can interact with those illusions. Whilst Neo can disguise what her opponent sees. 

Both have their limits. 

Neo @matteskye has a great post titled “Using her semblance took a toll on Neo.”

And we still dont know if Neo ‘teleports’ or simply bends light to make it appear to her opponent that she is no longer there.

We have yet to see how this effected Emerald, if at all, with regards to what is she capable of now? 

These factors alone means that a fight between these two has such amazing potential on so many different levels.

 If a confrontation was to occur,  Cinder was to come down on Neo’s side, thereby adding insult to injury , coupled with Neo being taken into Cinder’s confidence in ways that she is not, thereby making Emerald feel replaced. 

Or Emerald was to lose, be injured and then left behind. 

Could it be the last straw that breaks the camels back, triggering Emerald to sever ties with Cinder and ultimately leave Salem’s faction?

OTHER AVENUES:

Upon Cinder’s return, it may not culminate in a confrontation but rather Emerald could simply accept all of the above , serving to create a larger distance between C&E as Neo becomes increasingly closer to Cinder, even if it is a ruse to enact revenge on those she deems responsible for Roman’s death.

As Emerald continues to feel further isolated from Cinder’s faction and thereby her control, Emerald could simply see the slaughter that is about to be wrought upon Atlas, be sickened by it and take the opportunity to bolt whilst the chaos unfolds.
