Dudley Dursley and The Mostly Ordinary Shopping Trip
Dudley had put a lot behind him when he grew up, most of it things he'd sworn to himself that he'd never bring up to anyone, no matter the circumstances.
Then the letter arrived.

🎃~Trick or Treat! ~🎃
Percy was relaxing for a while in the living room waiting for his partner to get home. It’s only after he turns the page uninterrupted for the third time that he realises it. The girls were quiet, suspiciously so for five year olds. He frowns as he pulls himself off the couch and makes his way to their room. Peering inside quietly he sees a perfectly normal scene Lucy playing with her favourite stuffed animal and Molly nowhere in sight.
Trying not to worry too much, Percy walks further in the room. After checking under the bed and in the closet don’t yield any results he can’t keep his heart from starting to race.
Trying to keep himself steady and calm, Percy kneels down next to his daughter to ask, “Lucy, Do you know where Molly is?”
When she just looks around the room like she hadn't even noticed Molly was gone though he knew she wouldn't be of any help. Taking a slightly shaking breath he picks Lucy up and sets her on her bed before activating the protection and tracking charms on it. Making sure to give her the stuffed elephant as well since she was stuck there now.
Then sets about searching the house first with a spell to check that Molly was indeed still within the wards. (Which she thankfully was.) Then going through and checking every nook and cranny he can think of. Starting with the window in the girls’ room that he finds is still firmly shut as it should be, to the kitchen, then bathroom, before making it back into the living room. Still with no sign of her.
Molly is missing. Percy tries not to panic, tries to think of some place he hasn't checked, tries to think of some solution. All the while his heart is racing faster and faster in his chest with every second that passes. Walking quickly back to the girls’ room and checking to make sure Lucy was still there if only for his piece of mind Percy casts the spell to check if she’s still within the bounds of the wards once more and yet again it says that she is, but then why can’t he find her?
Deciding that maybe she got out of the flat somehow Percy goes to the door stepping outside of the flat and there she was just running around on her toy broom stick back and forth in front of the door. Pulling her into his arms and holding her close to his chest Percy can feel like he can breathe again. Even if Molly is trying her hardest to wiggle out of his grip.
It’s only once Percy has her back inside and has calmed down both his brain and his heart that he tries to get to the bottom of how she managed it. He assumed it was accidental magic which from her attempt at explaining the feeling sounds about right. She wanted to go outside but with the wards in place they stopped her from going further than right outside the door from the sounds of it. He’ll have to do some adjustment on them but he’s glad they worked as intended.
#percy weasley#molly weasley ii#lucy weasley#hp fanfiction#hp fanfic#Ask games#the urge to turn this into a random rarepair fic where Percy walks out the door#and it turned out Molly had apparated into the flat above him and the person in it was bringing her back#was so high but i held myself back#And if i was also considering the Person to be Dudley Dursley#who now has a magic kid of his own a few years younger then Molly and Lucy#and is now jumping at the opportunity to talk to Percy every chance he gets#because he just does not know how to handle said magic kid nor where to find other magic people that is no ones business but my own#But instead Percy just has an unknown partner you can use to sub in whom ever you like#anyway writing whatever i come up with in less then an hour is kinda fun ngl

Chapter 4 of the Honey Honey sequel is up!
Only one more to go!! :))
This one’s from Dudley’s PoV! I know people who read the last chapter are probably wanting an update on Harry’s occlumency lessons but that will be expanded on in the final chapter!
Here’s the opening:
Dudley was panicking.
Now, he’d never been the type to panic, not like his mother. Petunia was always fretting and grumbling about bloody something, but not Dudley. He was cool-headed - that’s what his father said at least, cool-headed just like him. It wasn’t for blokes to go about worrying, so Dudley tried his best not to.
I had a lot of fun writing this one, I hope you enjoy! <3

The Marvel family being more stable than any other superhero family is my bread and butter. Like you see all these other groups having various amounts of discourse. Arguments between hero and sidekick, family drama, dead family members coming back and hating everyone else(and no, that’s not exclusive to the bats, it actually happens a lot).
And then you have the Marvel family in the background, planning out their next trip to Disney World or whatever.
I kid you not, in Power of Shazam, Junior and Marvel did have a fight, and he did leave for like half of the series. So when they reunite you’d expect some bad blood and Freddy immediately leaving, right?
WRONG! Freddy takes the twins to the movies and tells them he has his license so he’s like “Hey, wanna go on a joyride?” And they’re like “YES!” And they just have the best time because Billy is Freddy’s little brother and he won’t let anything get in the way of their friendship. And him and Mary went right back to being sweet to each other, which, I’m not the biggest fan of their ship, but it was cute nonetheless.
You could add in Dudley and Tawny and it still wouldn’t budge. Adam’s like a fly on the wall. Adrianna and Amon are vibing with their new extended family and Billy’s side eying his magic-related brother because how did he bag ISIS?
And then there’s the Shazamily. With…literally nothing wrong. It’s just eight foster kids making a home. Add in Malik who is a very confused brother/cousin, and Tawny because he deserves to be here.
While everyone else is going through new trauma, the Shazamily/Marvel family are vibing on their magic train.

Something about Billy Batson being a reporter has sometimes rubbed me the wrong way, especially with all the comparisons to Superman and Captain Marvel.
Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s hilarious to have this small ass child walk into littéral war zones, report it live, come out completely unscathed and have everyone wonder what the fuck is wrong with this kid.
I do like it better when he’s a radio host, and I like to think he takes over when he’s an adult after Mr Morris retires. But I have a better suggestion.
Billy Batson should run an animal conservatory. Be it as an adult or maybe as a child (and uses Dudley’s as a cover for any adult legitimacy).
I think this is the best possible job for him for three reasons:
1) Being a radio host/ reporter or anything in that industry requires a lot of time management, and which Billy’s Champion duties, where he can find himself in time shenanigans, I don’t think it’s the best fit for him. I do think FREDDY should take over Whiz Radio after Mr Morris retires. Have the Newsboys association pair up with Whiz, and let Freddy “Natural Born Leader With A Knack For Journalism” Freeman be somewhere he could actually thrive.
2) I head-cannon that Billy has a hyper fixation on animals. It might have stated with Tigers (I’m looking at you Tawny) but I see it delving into other animals like crocodiles, hypos then rabbits … Ect. With all the bipedal magic animal people, I see him taking an interest in them and genuinely wants to learn more about them. I see him taking over the zoo after Dudley retires, but then converts it into a conservatory and makes expansions (I’ll explain why in a bit).
3) I also see him hyper fixating on magic. So naturally he hyper fixated extra hard on magical creatures. Say he finds out smuggling rings and hunting organisations hunting magical creatures,he would need a place for them to shelter them for them to recover. And maybe decided to host and take care of almost extinct species, and care for them as his own.
So in the eyes of the public, he runs an animal conservatory dedicated to nurturing wounded animals and host endangered species. But secretly does the same thing for magical creatures as well as have a place for them to stay while he takes care of the Smugglers and Hunters. If they decide to stay and protect their territory afterwards, then that’s defiantly not a complaint.
Darla would love to work there (if she exists here). Specially on the magical creature side (couch unicorns cough). I see Mary also being extreme interested (may be for the less magical side), and could work there when she’s not doing her model/celebrity work.
Idk, the reporter by day trope has been a bit over used, and while I may like it, I absolutely love the idea of Billy mixing his Champion duties with his job that he would absolutely love.

⚡️Harry Potter⚡️
On August 2nd 2023 I posted the character lineup for Harry, our main character, most underrated in his own series... I started with a sketch for Tonks, then did a version of Hermione, Ron and Harry and it just changed my life :) I'm so grateful for each of you and I can't wait to make so much more art with you guys! 🥹💛 Now, to celebrate that one-year (!!!) anniversary, I redrew Harry. I got to experiment a lot the past year with this series and I wanted to use some of my newfound experience for Harry, Merlin knows he deserves a little love. He is so underappreciated in his own series. He's the main character, yet we all love the side characters. It's nothing bad, but we shouldn't be so hard on our hero. This is a kid with a hero complex. He feels it is his responsibility to fix things and save his friends, because his entire childhood, he has never had anyone to rely on. The adults in his life did not help him or fix things for him, or make him feel taken care of. Harry had to take care of himself. So, yes, he always thinks it is his job to solve problems or save people. He never had anyone to show him there was another way, which is pretty sad, actually.
I liked playing around with this sketch, because there are many versions of Harry... There is the Harry at Hogwarts, who is this celebrity, but not really in a good way. Everyone always gossips about him and they love him one moment, only to despise him the next. No wonder the boy hates being famous. There is also Harry during the summer when he stays with the Dursleys and gets mistreated. He wears Dudley's hand-me-downs and has to make them work. He doesn't have any friends there and he feels abandoned by the magical world. The neighbours all think he's a criminal and his aunt and uncle started that rumour. How sick is that?! We overlook Harry's abuse quite a bit in the books... But it explains a lot of Harry's character. His awkward social skills and rebellious spirit, his snarkiness and longing for family. Finally, we have Harry the teenager. The normal kid he wishes to be all the time. The one who loves Quidditch, eating candy and playing games with his friends. Who just wants to enjoy himself. Can you imagine how it must have felt when Harry found out he was good at Quidditch? A boy who never once in his life got praised for something finds out he has a natural talent for a sport and people want him to play with them. It must have felt amazing! I like Harry a lot. He's a great protagonist and makes the books great. Yes, the side characters are all colourful and wonderful, but Harry carries the show on his back. I applauded him for it ⚡️
To end this post, here's the version of Harry from 1 year ago:

About the gender in hp thing: I know JKR wrote the books wanting the patriarchy to have minimal impact on the world but even through a couple of the metas you wrote you can see that that’s not the case. In your character crying post there’s a clear implication that showing that kind of emotion is a weakness but also that it is not masculine. Equating strength with masculinity is foundational for cultures with strong patriarchies, and this idea infests every other aspect of their lives. Idk because of that and many other reasons I have a very hard time of writing the wizarding world as anything other than a patriarchy
This is a watsonian analysis vs doylist analysis issue.
I 100% do think that JKR went out of her way to really, really downplay the importance of gender in her worldbuilding - and this contributes a lot to the specific feel of the world. You could genderflip, idk. Neville. Snape. Draco. Hermione. McGonagall. and almost no plot elements or character dynamics would change. (Maybe James would bully Severus slightly differently? Idk. He honestly might not.)
Compare HP to something like His Dark Materials, another British fantasy series released at the same time, marketed to the same demographic... in which gender politics are REALLY important. Lyra conforming or not conforming to specific gender norms hugely impacts the way a lot of other characters treat her. So much of Mrs. Coulter's character has to do with how she's navigated the back ways and side avenues into power, because the patriarchy that runs *that* world is extremely explicit and plot relevant, and there's a lot she just can't do.
Now is JKR *good* at writing a gender-blind world? Not really no. So she's stripped out the importance of gender in a fairly surface way, while leaving evidence of the foundations intact. Everyone's a het couple, women take the husband's last name, Molly and Petunia are at home while their husbands work and there's no inverse of that situation, Fleur's father walks her down the aisle at her wedding, it's important that Hermione be able to tame her hair when she wants to, but for Harry it doesn't matter...
There is ALSO the narrative voice poking through and putting its own spin on everything. This is where we start getting judgment (for example) directed both at girls who are too feminine, and at girls who aren't feminine enough. Or sexual assault not really "sticking" if it's directed at boys. We don't have a character talking, in-universe, about how it's wrong for a woman not to want children. We just have a book where the only women who don't have kids (or take care of kids) are villains. Same thing with masculinity = strength = no crying. That's something the narrative framing / bias of the author brings to the table, but it's kept out of the mechanics of the magical world. I guess you could say Harry and Draco equate crying/fainting with weakness (but not explicitly anti-masculinity)... but then Lupin goes out of his way to separate 'fainting' from 'weakness' anyway.
Interestingly, gender is much more baked into the muggle worldbuilding. (Part of why I think leaving that aspect out of the wizarding world was a deliberate choice.) Smeltings is an all-boys school, so is St Brutus.' Dudley teases Harry about his "boyfriend" Cedric, Vernon sizes up Arthur and Mad-Eye by how masculine they are. At the beginning of Book 4, Dudley's diet is this very gendered conflict between Vernon and Petunia, where Vernon doesn't want a "little nancy boy for a son" - and that is one of the only truly gendered insults in the whole series. "Crybaby" almost counts... but the Slytherins tease Hermione for crying too, so idk. They tend to go for pretty gender-neutral insults, like "poor" "unimportant parents" "looks like a chipmunk" ... etc.
Like... I'm trying to imagine a scene were Lucius lays into Draco for not being masculine enough, and I can't. I think that in a canon-compliant fic, a scene like that would feel odd. The conflict would need to be framed more like a "you disgrace the name of Malfoy with your weakness" or "never tell anyone outside the family what you're thinking" or "your believe yourself to be more intelligent than you truly are." Not "you need to man up."

It’s barely even Christmas and I saw a video on TikTok about a mum who somehow didn’t realize that she got three or four times the amount of gifts for one child then the other so there was literally like a massive pile of gifts and then a very noticeably smaller pile of gifts for the other child and all I could think about was Ginny and Twin!Reader and Molly having that issue
Them waking up and running to the Christmas tree and seeing everyone has a pile of gifts whether it’s from Arthur and Molly then maybe a few from some extended relatives or friends while the Reader just has a Weasley jumper in his least favourite colour and some homemade sweets and whatever it was Percy scraped the money for to get him and he’s all ecstatic because at least this year she didn’t forget to knit his jumper but Percy is trying to refrain from ripping out his own hair on the other side of the room because Ginny is unwrapping a Dudley amount of gifts while her baby brother is just sitting there, crossed legged in his ugly fucking sweater on the ground, smiling and trying not to cry the more gifts she goes through
I hate how accurate this would be for Molly regarding Weasley!Twin!Reader. She’s so tunnel vision on her precious baby girl that she totally forgets Twin!Reader altogether. It isn’t until she and Arthur are wrapping all the gifts late at night while all the kids are asleep that Arthur asks where Twin!Reader’s presents are. And you know damn well Molly won’t admit that she forgot to get him anything either. Cause she didn’t, she swears she didn’t. She just misplaced said gifts. That doesn’t make her a bad mother, accidents happen after all. Right? Meanwhile Arthur watches as she races around the house grabbing what spare yarn she has lying around and her magical knitting needles frantically knitting away as she tosses wildly different colors of yarn at them. The sweater Weasley!Twin!Reader ends up with on Christmas is a mash of hideous non-correlating colors and it wasn’t even wrapped in festive colored paper like the other siblings’ were, no his was crudely bunched up in brown paper. Not to mention the homemade sweets he gets with it aren’t even nicely wrapped either, they were instead hastily tossed into a napkin moments before the kids woke up and started making their way downstairs. The only true gift Weasley!Twin!Reader has is the one Percy managed to get for him, beautifully wrapped and overall perfect. (I also love to think that Ginny and Twin!Reader always hand make each other gifts every Christmas, something they’ve made into their own little tradition for one another so fortunately the Reader would also have that to look forward to.)
I just imagine a very half asleep Percy making his way downstairs, barely coherent about anything going on, until he notices the very tiny, thrown together “pile” off in the corner of the room and he just knows whose gifts those are for and suddenly he’s wide awake, blood pressure already rising. And it’s not even sunrise yet. When I tell you this boy would be staring Molly down, down to the depths of hell, I fucking mean it. Ginny may be Molly’s baby, but Twin!Reader is Percy’s and he won’t let this slide.
I could also see Molly telling Arthur to run to the shed and go pull something out of there to add to Weasley!Twin!Reader’s small “pile” of gifts. But I would really like to think that Arthur actually did get Weasley!Twin!Reader a gift on his own wholeheartedly with him in mind, of course it’s muggle related but it still means more than what Molly tried to put together. Especially if Weasley!Twin!Reader shares his father’s fascination with the muggle world. If that were the case then I could see Arthur being much closer to the Reader. He still isn’t necessarily a father to him as he should be but it’s a hell of a lot more of a relationship than what Molly can say she has with Weasley!Twin!Reader.
When Ginny is opening her plethora of gifts that just somehow seem to never end, she would wholeheartedly try to share some of them with Twin!Reader to open or trying to include him in on it somehow but Molly steps in, shooing Twin!Reader away and talking about how those are just for her and her alone. Meanwhile, Percy is clutching the Reader close as Twin!Reader smiles through watery eyes trying so hard not to cry and ruin the day for everyone. He wants to be supportive and he’s more than happy with the gifts he did get but seeing the looks on all his sibling’s faces, even the shameful look Arthur throws his way, he knows that none of this is acceptable. The only one who seems content is of course Molly.
I wouldn’t put it past Molly to hide/toss any gifts that Weasley!Twin!Reader got from any of their other relatives. Especially in the case of Weasley!Reader resembling the Black family side, courtesy of Grandma Cedrella. Particularly if Cedrella herself took to spoiling the Reader over any of the other kids in the family. I could just see there being a hidden wall in the attic with the ghoul where Molly has taken to keeping all the Reader’s other presents. Leave it to Harry and Ron to find it one day and finally so many things make sense. Like all the times Cedrella wrote to Weasley!Twin!Reader about how he liked the gifts she picked out for him and if there was anything specific she should get him next time or when she’d ask him in person at the next family get together. Meanwhile all this time everyone thought she was just in her old age and misremembering.
It isn’t until Weasley!Twin!Reader attends Hogwarts and makes his own friends that his little Christmas gift pile gets bigger and bigger each year until it goes unnoticed whether Molly actually went out of her way to get him something that year or not. Even his Slytherin housemates have gotten him more presents than Molly can ever admit to. Hell, not only them but their pureblood families have gone so far to add Weasley!Twin!Reader to their Christmas lists. So have the teachers. You should have seen Molly’s face when she found out one year the Reader went to the Zabini’s for the holidays after believing the Reader had stayed at Hogwarts over the break. And the only reason she thought that was because she never saw Weasley!Reader get off the train.
And Molly better brace herself when Lestrange!Daughter!OC (really gotta come up with a name for her) finds out. She would of course go absolutely hog wild spoiling her darling as he should be, but she will also be out for blood just as much. Imagine the look 👀 n Molly’s face when everyone wakes up on Christmas Day to an absolutely ridiculous amount of gifts littering the house, literally a pile touching the ceiling, nearly overflowing the house and each and everyone is addressed to Weasley!Reader. Lestrange!Daughter!OC going out of her way to not only spoil her darling herself but reaching out and making her rounds to everyone she knows who cares about Weasley!Reader and ensuring their gifts make it to him. Especially Cedrella’s. Her darling will never go without or feel less than ever again, not on her fucking watch. And even if Molly were to try and intercept Weasley!Reader’s gifts (literally imagining her pulling a Vernon with the Hogwarts letters), Lestrange!Daughter!OC has an army of house-elves tasked with making sure those presents get to who they’re meant for.

I need a story of Harry fucking off from the Dursely’s early, maybe Sirius gets custody, maybe it’s the Weasleys, or Remus, or whoever, or maybe they just decide to let him stay at Hogwarts the whole time
Just, however it happens, Harry doesn’t go back to the Dursely’s one summer while still underage, and it’s no big deal, right? Harry doesn’t want to be there, they don’t want him there, everything’s fine
Except that at least someone notices that Harry doesn’t come back, and yeah the other residents at Surrey don’t normally give a single fuck about that kid, they’ll turn a blind eye to pretty much anything happening to him, but a kid just disappearing? That’s too much, even for them
And once one person notices, well, there’s always been gossips in the neighborhood, soon everyone’s noticed it
I want it to escalate to a full blown investigation, they find the cupboard, they find that he’s not enrolled at the school they told everyone he went to, they find the dried blood (whether or not you believe Vernon and Petunia were physically abusive, Dudley canonically was physical with him, so there’d be blood), they find that the only doctors appointment they ever took him to was to get glasses once, etc., there’s arrests, and a legal battle, and the press, etc.
And none of them have any way to contact Harry (cause it can’t just be any owl, right? it has to be a magically trained owl?) to prove that they didn’t just like. murder him. and hide his body somewhere. or something like that.
So now Harry Potter’s famous in the muggle world and he has no idea about it

🐾 FIC
Nectar by @jtimu (Draco/Harry, T, 1.9k) Draco's first Animagus transformation doesn't go as planned.
Gym Rats and Whippet Pats by @ViridianRynn (Dudley/Millicent, T, 6.8k) When his longtime girlfriend Milli adopts a dog, Dudley wants nothing to do with him. He's never had a dog and he's never wanted one.
His avoidance of taking care of the new pup is tested when Milli goes on a business trip for two weeks and leaves the dog in his care. Will he be able to step up to the task, or will his inability to connect with the dog endanger his relationship?
A fluffy little romp in which Dudley gets a crash course in pet ownership and learns that it isn't easy to keep a furry companion out of your heart.
Little Menace by @annanother-thing (Draco/Harry, M, 3k) Draco wants to make his mother happy. Narcissa wants everyone to get along. Harry wants to call Leonora Leo. Lucius wants his son to break up with his boyfriend and marry a good pureblood woman.
And Leonora? Well, she's quite happy playing with all the toys she can find...
The Cat-astrophe by @thetacowrites (Draco/Harry, E, 4.3) Harry Potter can't sleep. Grimmauld Place is being haunted by a vicious ghost of a cat who inflicts a magical injury onto Harry and the Ministry of Magic sends one of its Junior Unspeakables to investigate. The unspeakable in question being Draco Lucius Malfoy.
The Selkie's Secret by @midnightstargazer (Neville/Pansy, T, 5.1) A series of encounters by the lakeside in seventh year lead Neville to discover a different side to Pansy Parkinson. Despite the war going on, the two form an unexpected bond. Can it be strong enough to survive the Battle of Hogwarts?
Run, Rabbit, Run by @dracopetal (Draco/Harry, E, 46k) Harry finds an injured rabbit in the Forbidden Forest.
Which Came First, the Phoenix or the Flame? by @astridastrolabe (Luna/Draco/Ron, M, 18k) It's a tale as old as time: the darkest night of the soul– and taking that one.more.breath.anyway. The hero(ine)'s journey.
Just as Ron is truly having a final, wrackspurt-induced, alcohol-inflamed psychotic break, he finds that there are forces far beyond his control that have a very different path for him. Namely those forces of the Great Houses Lovegood, Bulstrode and Malfoy. Ron and his pet cockatoo, Sturgil, cross a threshold of more than one level of reality. Polyamory, adults doing their best, recovery story, lots of inner narration. Complex!Ron POV. Buckle up.
Creature Comforts by IzRoan (Draco/Harry, M, 86k) When Draco is turned into a werewolf, he does not expect to be given a postbellum bedroom in Number Twelve, Grimmauld Place, nor does he expect to find a whole new set of friends.
When Harry is turned into a werewolf, he does not expect to make a whole new set of friends. He could have anticipated, however, falling even harder in love with the stubborn, acerbic, workaholic prat who’s been hovering at the fringes of his life for the past seven years.
This is exactly what happens.
Raising Kids by nicolawritesdrh (The Other Kind) (Pansy/Neville, E. 4.8k) "Pansy exhaled deeply. “Neville,” she said slowly, “When I suggested we get a pet, I meant a cat or a dog. I never mentioned a fucking goat.”"
When Pansy suggested they get a pet to practice their parenting skills before trying for a baby, she hadn't expected Neville to walk in the door with the world's worst behaved goat.
The Cat that got the Créme (de la Potter) by @youhavemyswordandmybow and @aniimamundi (Draco/Harry, E, 22.6k) Draco's doing fine after the war. No, really! He's a repentant, industrious employee by day and a gorgeous, vigilante cat by night. So what if he's been disowned by his parents (father)? Life's great!
And, when he gets into a spot of trouble? Pffft … he's going to save himself! Easy peasy. The Chosen One is not actually required. He just happens to be there. It's not like Draco went looking for him … or anything.
Ripped Apart by @dittanyanddreams (Draco/Harry, E, 4.3k) Following his father’s failings in the war, nobody in the Wizarding World knew of Draco’s affliction - his father’s punishment being his son handed over to Greyback to do with as he pleased. Somehow Draco had managed to claw his way back - pun intended - into some form of acceptance in society again, although he knew there were those out there who thought he should be in Azkaban - or dead. He’d also fallen in love, with none other that Harry fucking Potter. If they know we’re dating, it will only be worse for him, Draco thought as he walked through Knockturn Alley on the way to the apothecary. Draco couldn’t know at that moment how wrong this thought was.
Scales and Sorcery by Splashstar01 (Draco/Harry, E, 13.9k) As toddlers, Harry Potter and Draco’s lives change when they befriend each other on James Potter’s Romanian dragon reserve, where Draco is hatched as a rare shape-shifting Hungarian Horntail. The two quickly become inseparable, and as they grow up together, their bond deepens into something truly magical and unbreakable.
Follow them on this unique coming-of-age journey of self-discovery and first love, where Harry finds his soulmate in the most unexpected of creatures.
Kaleidoscope by @dyke3vader (Harry/Ron/Hermione, E, 39k) Dear Mooney and Padfoot,
It’s been months, and I’m sorry.
Harry discovers old letters written by his father, and uncles, while organizing Hogwarts' archives. Dumb crossover idea but an idea nonetheless, Gravity Falls/Fawcett
Gravity Falls and Fawcett City both being weirdness magnet sites that pull in all manner of Weird Shit™️
Dipper tuned in to Whiz radio a few times thinking it was an urban fantasy podcast Billy hosted, looked into it further and realized it was real when he saw a news article with the same events during the Road Trip episode
Talks to Ford about it one time Post-Weirdmadgeddon after reading the part of the journal about weirdness magnetism, cue the road trip to Fawcett!
Were doing Fawcett as messy with time, so Stan is having a grand good time with the dirt cheap WW2 era prices
Mabel meets and befriends a witch coven, they’re swell old ladies and one’s talking baby gator familiar was a sweetheart
Dipper is burning through journal pages with Ford, cataloging the normal everyday weirdness Fawcett has going on
Ford is very fascinated with how normal people just accept the weirdness of their city, not even turning their heads at the talking tiger that walks down the street and happily entertains every question Mabel has for him and blushes past all his fur at her compliments on his dapper clothing and feline features
Mabel and Tawny are penpals by the end of this adventure, it’s inevitable
Same with Stan and Uncle Dudley if they somehow meet; Conmen who are too much of a lovable fraud to hate
Dipper eventually does get to have a conversation with Billy, dropping in unannounced during his off air hours of work and bombarding him with a notepads worth of questions, which Billy is not bothered by and has fun talking about all the fun magical stuff he loves about his city with a kid his age
The Pines and Batson twins would be great friends and a wonderful band of misfits
Mary and Mabel bond over crafts while Billy and Dipper are fountains of stories about the weird and magical

I love when Draco learns truths about Harry, like the DH hunt, or the cupboard under the stairs. I love when Harry learns truths about Draco, like what magically society is really about. [And, guilty pleasure, I especially love a bit of Dumbledore thruthing]. Any recs for when either of them gets a moment of epiphany?
Hello friend! That’s such an interesting trope, I love seeing their dynamics evolve like that. I did a list for “Draco finds out about the Dursleys” here and I tried to think of fics where Harry gets into contact with Old Magic or Pureblood traditions through Draco. I’d love to see if anyone has more recs for this theme!
In Which Harry is Magnetic North and Draco Is An Idiot by bryoneybrynn (T, 14k)
For as long as he can remember, Draco’s been bringing fake dates to his family’s annual Yuletide celebration in order to evade his mother’s matchmaking. This year, Potter’s posing as his pretend boyfriend. But as the party gets underway, it gets unclear who’s playing who, who’s pretending what, who’s not pretending at all, and what the game really is. Confused? Yeah, so is Draco…
The Courting by the Pureblood Who Only Has Five Milligrams of Romantic Intelligence and Thinks He’s Real Smooth by cibee (T, 19k)
Draco could grab Potter and shove him into a stall before proceeding to suck his soul out of his dick, but secretly, deep down, in the part of Draco that he will never admit to anyone, he is (everyone pauses to shudder) a romantic. Potter is not someone Draco wants a one-off with. Potter is — Draco’s beloved!
House Proud by astolat (M, 23k)
His house liked Draco Malfoy more than him.
The Nobility of Ascent by Lomonaaeren (E, 27k)
Not even his own fame and power are enough to get the Wizengamot to pass laws protecting Muggleborn and orphaned children, so Harry swallows his pride and goes to Draco Malfoy, who can teach him how to convince the prejudiced old bastards to listen to him.
There's a Pure-Blood Custom For That by Lomonaaeren (M, 105k)
The day that Harry stops Draco Malfoy and his son from being bothered in the middle of Diagon Alley starts a strange series of interactions between him and Malfoy. Who knew there was a pure-blood custom for every situation?
Shibboleths by zeitgeistic (E, 109k)
Muggle Immersion co-Professor Harry Potter spends his days hanging with his son, reading to his "dog," teaching magical kids about the internet with his cousin Dudley, and irritating Snape’s portrait. He’s understandably annoyed when his cosy life is interrupted by the Headmistress hiring on Draco Malfoy to be Hogwarts’ new Ancient Magical Cultures and Spellcasting professor.
Never Grow a Fishbone by shanastoryteller (T, 123k)
Draco returns to Hogwarts. He has a duty to his blood and his name and his house, and he will fulfill it.
Oath Breaker by GoblinCatKC (T, 181k)
At the start of seventh year, the Malfoys perform a dramatic double-cross against the dark lord and Draco educates Harry in an old school of magic. With a wild dragon chase, narrow escapes and an unlikely romance as Draco is forced to reveal to a hostile wizarding world that the Malfoy family is dark.

so I’ve been rereading the books to get the tiny snippets of Snape that don't often get brought up
but so far I’ve only read up to Harry meeting Ron on the Hogwarts Express. Although Snape has yet to be introduced I keep thinking about how similar Snape and Harry were in a lot of ways - and how different - even at the early stages.
so this is a mostly snape-centric ramble about Harry and Sev's similarities and differences, and what they might have meant for a young Sev during his time as a child, his family, his trip to Diagon Alley, his scene on the Hogwarts Express, and what all of that might mean for his experience of being in Slytherin in his early years
Pre Hogwarts
This started as a ramble, but I’ve decided to organise it slightly - this is difficult as Harry and Snape have slightly different circumstances that are similar in some ways but different in others, so I’ve just gone back to basics for each section here
Similarities
Both are young wizards about to go to Hogwarts
Both come from unhappy homes
Both cannot wait to go to Hogwarts/escape their ‘family home’
Both have displayed unintentional magic as children
Both as children are in ill-fitting clothes, have poor haircuts (even if Harry's grows back; Sev’s apparently does not), and are scrawny and/or small. Sev is described as looking at odds with James ("conspicuously lacked" looking well-cared-for and adored, which I suspect would also apply to Harry, if the series wasn't half in Harry's POV).
Depending on whether you take the mistreatment and neglect literally from PS or in a more Roald Dahl-eque way in which I suspect it was initially written, Harry did not have a happy home life until this point, and neither did Snape (a witch ‘cowering’ from a Muggle and Sev’s jacket despite the heat and the Pottermore article suggest and/or state physical abuse in addition to neglect)
As far as we’re aware, Snape is not used as a servant/slave within his own home
Differences
One of the main ways Harry and Sev differ would obviously be magical knowledge; Sev knows he is a wizard, knows a lot about the wizarding world - but Harry does not
Snape is not orphaned; he has both parents (for better or for worse), where Harry has none, unless you count the Dursleys
Both Harry and Sev are obviously neglected, but Harry is neglected intentionally
Harry is intentionally excluded, neglected and ignored - but Sev’s neglect seems less intentional and more… ‘the way of things’
Sev's family are so poor and/or neglectful that Sev doesn't have his own clothes (context clues like living in a dilapidated, small house in an old industrial area suggest they just don't have the option)
Sev’s family either has no inclination or ability to amend Tobias' clothes instead of Eileen's, and/or don’t have any family friends to borrow/take hand-me-down clothes from; they are his parents’ clothes. Harry is ‘fortunate’ in that he has Dudley to take clothes from. The obvious outcome being here that otherwise he’d be wearing Vernon’s old coat and Petunia’s blouse)
Harry is raised in a middle-class home with a reasonable enough income. He gets pocket money (probably paltry and inconsistent: “The Dursleys haven’t given me pocket money for about six years”, CoS) can sneak out and eat at night, get cake (however gross) from his neighbour as she tells him about her cats. He eats with the Dursleys, plays with Dudley's toys if he's left alone, and gets gifts (even if they are pathetic). Harry’s neglect is wilful - and malicious
I get the idea that the Snape family are so poor and so unhappy that their neglect isn't even intentional, it's just how their lives are. they're steeped in it, living in a dilapidated area, poor, in an unhappy and volatile marriage
Sev is described, even as an adult, as being skinny - so maybe that's just how he's wired - but maybe (almost certainly given the other context clues and the era) he's also underfed as a kid
If we reach into parallels with the other 'abandoned boy' (voldemort), sev's mum was possibly similar to merope gaunt - unhappy, and either unwilling or unable to use magic to defend herself or sev against tobias (this conjecture is all from hazy memory; obviously i haven't read that far yet).
Overall ideas:
Neither Sev nor Harry have warm family figures. Far from Molly's checking that her gaggle are in order on platform 9 3/4 the Dursleys leave Harry there alone - and Eileen doesn't seem that bothered when Sev is about to leave (nor does he seem that bothered that he's about to leave her - he's more interested in Lily). But Snape’s lack of familial closeness seems a consequence of their situation, rather than an intentional choice, as it was with the Dursleys and Harry.
Sev (unlike Harry) doesn't really know 'how the other half live' - as far as we can tell, he has no access to the average family dynamic of the Dursleys (and they do seem happy with one another, they love Dudley, and would be living their 'ordinary' dream life if Harry wasn't there to complicate it). To add to that, I get the idea that Sev genuinely doesn't really understand why Lily likes (or loves) Petunia; he has no concept of why a family member’s opinion might count. There's not much love to lose in his family, and like Harry, he can’t wait to leave - there’s nothing holding him back.
Unlike Harry who doesn’t know anything yet, Snape knows he's a wizard and has known all his life. He knows a lot about the wizarding world, either from his mother or her books; he tells Lily about it. Sev loves (as Harry comes to love) magic, and what it represents: escape, freedom, control over his life - and a certain amount of positive attention and interest from Lily which he is so clearly lacking elsewhere.
But (sort of like Harry), his house at Spinner's End doesn't seem like the sort of place where magic was used like The Burrow, for example, or Malfoy Manor where Draco already flies ("doesn't your dad like magic?"; he’s alone in his room shooting down flies). It’s also not apparently used for defence/retaliation by his mother, if the shouting scene with Sev's father is any indication.
But (un)intentionally, depending on how you interpret Sev's actions with Petunia and the branch, Sev has displayed magic when he was angry or afraid, much like most magical children - and much like Harry.
Harry's examples are ‘sweeter’ at that age, on the whole: he shrinks an ugly jumper, grows his hair back, and jumps/flies on a roof, and removes glass from a snake enclosure in a comical scene. Sev drops a branch on someone, and they are genuinely upset and leave. (Some of this might be to do with the lighter tone of the earlier books as well).
Seeing as Petunia was fine enough to run away after the event and Lily stays friends with him, it can't have been an enormous branch. Sev seems guilty, so I'm certain that whilst he did want to retaliate (and for something to happen to Petunia), I'm not certain that he actually intended it to (or perhaps he did; I wouldn't blame him. I also really enjoy the idea that he's in control of his magic enough to cause it on purpose; I get the idea he's quite powerful, because of his learning to fly unsupported later in his life, which is no mean feat by this universe's rules, and his skills in wandless magic like Legi/Occlumency, spell creation, etc). [side note: that then opens up a can of worms for me bc how powerful is Lily if she can float/fly at nine, Harry can either Apparate or float/fly in primary school, at presumably a similar age - but those were accidental, brief 'flights' I suppose compared to Voldemort and Snape showing sustained flight during the battle of seven potters and jumping out of a Hogwarts window and flying away - but i digress).
So, while Harry’s no doormat, Severus is possibly more spiteful and reactive at that age; he's defiant when he drops a branch on Petunia, he's shooting down flies when he gets his wand, he's making disparaging noises to James, he's accusing Petunia of spying, and all of the other things people say to suggest he's always been a terrible person. I think, given the glimpses into a stressful, poverty-stricken and loveless home, possibly also abusive, that's essentially all he knows when threatened. Harry seems overwhelmingly polite to Hagrid in early PS - but then Hagrid has always been kind and almost reverential, which in turn would affect how a person responds. We mainly see Sev respond to Petunia in a similar context, and he’s nice enough to Lily, if a bit awkward and lacking in Harry’s politeness.
I can see Sev, with his more ‘prickly’ upbringing, being more like Tom here in the same situation of not knowing he was a wizard - and acting more like ‘I knew I was special’ than ‘no, sorry, you’ve got the wrong guy’. But again, that might be because of the intersection of his personality and his upbringing - Harry, too, was defiant and neglected, though I get the feeling Sev’s general situation was more violent somehow, so it could’ve gone either way.
Diagon Alley
The next place where Harry and Sev's differences would be readily apparent would be in Diagon Alley. This is less about their similarities vs differences and more of a series of general rambles and speculation.
Would Snape have even gone to Diagon? By which I mean, would he wear his mother's old robes to school, or get new ones? Did he have her old books? Would she have saved them for 11+ years? (books, maybe; robes, possibly not).
Assuming Sev went to Diagon, as all/most young Wizards do, I imagine that despite Sev knowing about magical culture he's rarely actually seen it in action because of my point above about his father not liking magic/anything much and his mother not using magic to defend herself - so he’s definitely not seen it on that scale. He'd be every bit as blown away as Harry was by the wonders of Diagon Alley, the shops, the brooms, the pets, the books - because his dream is finally coming true! He's on his way to Hogwarts!
…Until it came to the buying. Young Sev has no vault overflowing with gold. He has no option to realistically contemplate buying a solid gold cauldron like Harry does, even if he might like to. He probably doesn't get a pet as a lovely going away (or in Harry's case, birthday) gift from a parental figure, and there’s no mention of a pet when Sev’s on Platform 9 ¾. Eileen would have had to save, or keep some money back/hidden, for all of that, given the state of his home and Muggle clothes.
tangent: by the time they reach the train, and even in diagon itself, sev is more of a ron than a harry. but how poor is the weasley family really if they always get plenty to eat and a lovely large home and all of their school supplies and brooms at home for so many kids on a single income, even if most stuff is secondhand? maybe i'm just biased bc I grew up poor and it was just me and mum and stuff Just Was secondhand, it's not the end of the world even if ron's embarrassed by it.
it's suggested in later books that ron's never (or rarely) owned a galleon. seven galleons then (assuming the prices are similar in sev's generation) seems a lot then for a wand; 9 galleons for a new book (advanced potion making apparently cost that, HBP); possibly it was eileen's own old book, and I know the curriculum doesn't change much if harry's still using it and the book was printed in the 50s, but in CoS, with lockhart's book(s), and the weasleys talking, suggest they'd have to have bought at least a few new books each year, so we can assume sev would need to do the same and otherwise he’d be borrowing old books. not to mention the potions ingredients, the robes, etc. I assume Sev got his own wand but what if he used his mother's old one (especially if she didn’t use it much - which would be nice/interesting, as another parallel where he takes predominantly after/aligns more strongly with his mother/female figures which was discussed in several other metas).
The other thing that struck me was that Harry wanted to buy a book of curses and jinxes (Curses and Counter-Curses: Bewitch your friends and befuddle your enemies!) for use on Dudley, but Hagrid dissuaded him - much like how Sev was described as knowing "more curses when he arrived at school than half the kids in seventh year" and maybe might want to curse his father and/or Petunia, but certainly learnt to curse the Marauders at a later stage.
The scene with Draco and Harry at Madam Malkin’s was also interesting to me when drawing conclusions for Sev. When comparing Harry’s experience on the Hogwarts Express to the robe shop, I’m curious how it would’ve differed or been the same.
At Madam Malkin’s, Draco sees what he would’ve seen in Sev: a boy, small for his age, in hand-me-downs, with possibly weird hair - and Draco attempts to chat with him.
Draco here, to an extent, represents any Malfoy (as we know, Lucius befriended Sev), and indeed any Pureblood, in the same situation - a boy raised in a wealthy magical family, with all of the experience of magic and privilege that comes with it. He wants a racing broom, he’s practically bored of magic, none of this is special. But it is special to Harry, and it’s special to Sev; it’s their lifeline and their escape. I’m not sure how much Sev would’ve appreciated or wanted to emulate that bored, over it attitude; on the one hand ‘no foolish wand-waving’ indicates that to an extent he’s not impressed with showy magic for the sake of it, on the other, he’s the Half Blood Prince. He’s done plenty of foolish wand-waving in his time, and finds it fascinating.
Back to the conversation with Draco. Like Harry, Sev would not have played Quidditch (he can’t fly intuitively in the brief memory we see, being more akin to someone like Hermione or Neville in that regard); he would likely not have a broom already. He’s critical of ‘big Quidditch heroes’ - or is he jealous? He certainly enjoys Quidditch enough to have a rivalry with McGonagall, and that might be another part to why he ended up disliking James - maybe he really was jealous of James’ skill on the Quidditch pitch.
Then, Draco discusses houses. Here there’d be a slight difference between Sev and Harry - Harry has no idea, really, what house he’d be in - he doesn’t even know what the houses are. But Sev wants to be a Slytherin, he knows that already. Possibly because his mother was, furthering their similarities/alignment? It does seem to generally run in families, what with James “Gryffindor like my dad” Potter, Sirius “my whole family have been in Slytherin but maybe I’ll break the tradition” Black, and Draco “I know I’ll be in Slytherin because all of my family have been” Malfoy and, of course, the whole host of Weasleys).
So, wanting to be in Slytherin would be a point in Sev’s favour, as far as the Malfoys were concerned, and wanting it (and possibly having a family member already in Slytherin) would be useful in that context, too, obviously.
But how would Sev react at this point to Draco’s personality? Harry is reminded of Dudley, and I’m not sure we have enough evidence to say whether Sev had someone similar in his life who bullied him (what his father did I would argue went far beyond bullying, and would be a much different dynamic). But Petunia would possibly have acted as a stand-in here, either as herself, or as a representation of the other Muggles in the area who knew ‘that Snape’ family from the poor address, for the reason of why Sev was otherwise friendless. I don’t think it’s a leap to imagine that Sev was unpopular with the other local kids.
Draco goes on to ask Harry whether his parents were “our kind” - to which Sev has a more ‘undesirable’ answer than Harry, because one of his parents was a Muggle. Draco talks of servants, and Sev probably wouldn’t have the same irritable reaction to that, as we don’t see any implication that he was treated in that way by his parents, unlike Harry. But also unlike Harry, Snape would be there with his witch mother (and not a “savage”), and knew about Hogwarts already. Unlike Harry, Snape might have been considered by Draco/the Malfoys/Purebloods as “the other sort” - the child of non-magical people. Draco asks for Harry’s surname, presumably to check whether he was of suitable stock (which Snape, with a Muggle surname, wouldn’t be).
Perhaps Sev would’ve similarly hated the snotty, biased, spoilt brat attitude.
Or perhaps, in this situation, he’d aspire to be like the Malfoys - to become the snotty, spoilt type. To be the bully, instead of the victim. Sev did eventually befriend the Malfoys, after all - but how much of that was an immediate friendship (unlikely, at that point, as Malfoy was older and what ~16yo wants to regularly hang out with an 11yo). We see that he’s possibly headed that way by 5th/6th year by aligning with Mulciber and Avery, but that was a new enough development that Lily commented on it at that point - but at this early stage, it’s made clear that Sev is ‘the victim’ of the bully, or the underdog, like Harry - and someone like Draco probably wouldn’t have thought much of him. (James and Sirius certainly didn’t, though not for these same exact reasons).
The Hogwarts Express
And finally, on the train. Harry has experienced celebrity in glimpses by now, at the Leaky Cauldron and at Ollivander’s - but it’s on the train and the platform where everyone from the Weasleys to Draco wants to gawk and/or befriend him.
I’ve said already that by the time they reach the train, and even in Diagon itself, Sev is more of a Ron than a Harry. Harry knows what it is to have hand-me-downs and not be able to afford anything, but that’s Sev’s continued existence unless his family suddenly won the lottery. And whilst Harry bought a heap of sweets and got a delightful new friend in Ron, Sev and Lily were (as discussed above) compelled to leave his cabin because of James and Sirius… just as Harry was interrupted by Draco, Crabbe, and Goyle. But it’s James who overhears Sev and interrupts and then says, practically word-for-word, what Draco does in Madam Malkins’ (James’ “Who wants to be in Slytherin? I think I’d leave, wouldn’t you?” vs Draco’s “Imagine being in Hufflepuff, I think I’d leave, wouldn’t you?”). Now, Sev does this too, to an extent, making a small disparaging noise at James too for wanting to be in Gryffindor like his dad (to me, another hint that Sev wants to be in Slytherin because of his mum). But that was after James had already interrupted Sev’s conversation with Lily; otherwise, Sev was content to keep to himself.
And Draco is hounding Harry for opposite reasons. Draco is attempting to ‘befriend’ Harry. Harry is a ‘desirable’ connection - he’s rich, famous, of a good wizarding name, and if adult Snape’s speech to Bellatrix is any indication, possibly considered a ‘powerful dark wizard’ around which Voldemort’s followers could rally. He’s ‘got it all’. By comparison, Snape is undesirable - he has all of Harry’s social setbacks - he looks poor, he is poor, he’s raised by Muggles and has immediate Muggle heritage, he probably wasn’t raised with extensive/overly frequent magic use, and is a bit weird looking in general - and he has none of Harry’s desirable traits like a good name, reputation, money, family, or connections. “Prince” is not a famous name by the time Harry is in school, and given wizard lifespans, they probably weren’t a big name a generation ago, either. All Sev has is knowledge of the wizarding world, which might fool or impress someone like Draco for a bit. But it’s implied that Draco believes there’s a fundamental difference in how Muggleborns/those with Muggle families are raised compared to ‘true’ wizarding families (and there really is). But Sev was raised in a Muggle area, likely not using magic or being an active part of the culture since he’s so starved for someone magical to talk to - and he’s shortly going to be in a wizarding school, where Sev’s second hand knowledge (from his mother) essentially becomes inconsequential anyway.
All in all, Draco simply wouldn’t bother, if this were a different universe. And Lucius (and others in Slytherin) probably asked all of the necessary vetting questions that Malfoy did over the course of the time in the robe shop and on the train, and reached the same conclusion: Snape wasn’t worth their time. That is, until he proved himself an adept wizard, some time later in school. (To be clear if I haven’t already: Draco is just a stand-in in this ramble for general Pureblood/Slytherin beliefs, asking the sorts of questions and acting in ways that reflect those values).
What that all means is that Snape continued to face the everyday challenges that were essentially eliminated from Harry’s life once he reached Hogwarts; challenges which would’ve had greater impact in a house like Slytherin which has a reputation for blood purity and wizarding supremacy, and many people in it who hail from rich, well-connected Pureblood families who probably are all, one way or another, related by blood or marriage anyway. Lucius was a Prefect by the time Sev got to Hogwarts, and I think Draco became one, and those sorts of attitudes were shared by Draco’s Slytherin peers and not outliers.
Some more conjecture now: I think it’s safe to say that instead of the jocular vibe of the Gryffindor common room, an unofficial but unquestioned hierarchy would inevitably develop in Slytherin and its members would be expected to fall in line. Much like how Crabbe and Goyle followed Draco, and Pansy and Blaise etc followed Draco’s lead, I expect most of Sev’s peers would be expected to fall in line under Lucius and later authority figures as well - to keep the peace in their fancy aristocratic families, to keep the peace in their dorms, and in the real world, with a war going on and Voldemort practically recruiting from the Slytherin common room. It would’ve benefitted Sev to keep his head down in these conditions, to join in, to butter up - because unlike Harry, Sev would’ve had to work hard to make friends (being generally awkward and ‘undesirable’ as a friend by Draco/Slytherin standards). Nobody from Slytherin came to his aid in SWM, possibly because of those reasons and/or because he’d spent years being openly friends with Lily who was a Gryffindor and a Muggleborn (and thus also undesirable).
Anyway none of this is news and I have no conclusion, I just had thoughts

Trans Harry Potter head cannons purely to piss off JK Rowling:
-Harry is non-binary but they’re only out at hogwarts because the Dursleys are unsupportive. They probably experimented more with clothing and pronouns since the Dursleys weren’t around anymore. They probably have a more feminine version of their hogwarts uniform as well as a more masculine one. Dudley was homophobic as a kid due to his upbringing but became an ally post-character development. He’s confused but he’s trying his best.
-Ron is a trans man and he always felt more comfortable as a child in his brother’s clothes than his own. His parents were honestly kind of relieved because it saves money on hand me downs. All his old clothes went to Ginny.
-Hermione is a trans woman. Honestly I don’t think her parents would care. If they were ok with her going to magic school they’re probably fine with her being a girl lol.
-Madame Pomfry has gender affirming spells.
-Voldemort supports trans death eaters. He’s a villain, not a monster.
#btw I’m not trans I just like annoying conservatives so if any of this is offensive/innacurate just let me know#Harry Potter#trans#jk Rowling#terfs dni

Hey I absolutely adore your Indian James headcanons can you do some for Harry too please <33
Okay this got too long so it's only Harry's first year at Hogwarts. At some point I might do the rest of his years but yeah. Here you go, i hope you like it :)
The first time Harry noticed his skin was darker than the people on Privet Drive was when he was four. The first time he noticed people sneered at him for it was when he was five and a half. He didn't understand it; why did they think the colour of his skin meant that he was inferior to them? He heard the words chee-chee and brownie thrown around like Dudley threw his food, and quietly pulled his shirt tighter around himself.
When Harry is eight, Dudley and his gang throw him in a ditch and throw dirt and soil on him till he's coughing and tears are running down his face. "You blend right into the mud," Piers laughs at him. The next day, the boy turns up to school with black skin. Harry sits in the corner and turns his face away, a secret grin playing on his lips.
He comes to Hogwarts, and there are so many colours. He is approached by Parvati on the second night, and she asks him if he's excited for Ganpati Chaturthi. He stares at her, and then says, "I'm sorry, but I don't know what that is." She gets offended, but they haltingly talk it out, awkward and stilted like most eleven year olds. When she realises that he's been kept from his heritage and his magic, she flies off the rails with anger. "That's it," she says, "we're friends now. No arguments."
Harry loves talking to Parvati. She's the one that tells him his father was from India. She's the one that tells him the names of his grandparents, that tells him of the importance of heritage in the magical world. They talk about religion and food and all sorts of things, and within two weeks Harry is asking her to teach him Marathi. It's hard at first; the grammar structure is more like French than English, the alphabet sequence is weird and complicated and has too many letters, but he keeps practising his svar and vyanjana and kana and matra. He will do this, he tells himself. (He doesn't tell Ron. He wants this for himself, he thinks. His family, his heritage. He wants to learn before he shares, and so he doesn't tell Ron. For now. He will, when he knows enough.)
Slowly, he starts talking to other Indian kids at Hogwarts. Padma, a seventh year Slytherin named Aarzoo who's Muslim and always has the prettiest hijabs, Gryffindor Kalyani from fourth year and Hufflepuff Rushabh from the third. Kalyani is from Maharashtra just like the Patil twins and Harry, Rushabh is from Gujarat and Aarzoo from Punjab. Harry finds it fascinating that India has so many different cultures and religions, and demands knowledge from them. Aarzoo laughs, and tells him he should have been with the 'Claws.
Harry disagrees. He was supposed to be in Slytherin, he knows, but he is in Gryffindor, where his family had been. His family had been Indian. He wants to know everything about it. If he couldn't have his parents, he would have that which had been a major part of his father's life. And so he reads and observes and studies and asks questions— hesitating at first in case they yell at him (Aunt Petunia hated questions and he feared these people would be the same), but slowly he asks more and more. He talks for hours with Kalyani and Rushabh, and they tell him about Garba and Dhol Tasha, Ganpati Chaturthi and Diwali, Eid and Gudi Padwa. They talk about the languages of India, and Harry immediately asks Aarzoo to teach him Urdu and Hindi. She laughs, and says he should focus on Marathi first. He pouts, but nods.
The Mirror of Erised shows him his father, and he can't take his eyes off. James Potter is a tall man, bulky frame covered in muscles and warm brown skin that seems to glow with happiness. His eyes are light brown, and the bold black lines drawn under them make the green specks stand out. He's dressed in what Harry knows is called a kurta, white and gold threads woven to form images of peacocks and elephants and other intricate designs. The next day, Harry asks Padma what she lines her eyes with, and she promptly hands him a little round metal box and a tiny wooden stick. "It's called kajal." She tells him the differences in pronunciation between Hindi and Marathi, and shows him how to apply it. Harry wears it everyday. It makes his eyes look bright, brighter than they already are, and he falls in love with it. Kalyani presses a kajal covered finger behind his ear every morning. "For good luck," she tells him, a grin playing on her pretty lips. Harry flushes, and smiles back shyly.
For Christmas, Aarzoo gives him perfume. It's chandan and mogra with hints of rose, she says, "and your grandfather made it. His name was Fleamont Henry Potter, and he was an exceptionally talented potioneer." Harry wears it religiously. Padma and Parvati band together and get him books on the Potter family and their historical importance, and he almost cries. Rushabh promises to teach him how to play Garba, and Kalyani gives him a cookbook for everyday Indian foods— breakfast and lunch and a few fancy stuff. Harry hugs it to his chest and thanks her with shining eyes. (he may have a bit of a crush on her. He can't help it— she's really smart, and she's pretty.)
Throughout the year, all of them work to introduce him to Indian food. At first, he thinks it will be easy. It is not. There is no such cuisine named Indian, Parvati tells him sternly. There is Punjabi, South Indian, Mughlai, Maharashtrian, North Indian, Bihari, Bengali and so many more. "The food in India changes with every twenty kilometres of travel," Aarzoo says when he mock complains about it. "It's never the same, and that's what makes it so special." He agrees.
The end of the year arrives, and Harry is still weak from his tryst down the trapdoor. When Ron and Hermione aren't present, his friends from home (because that's what India is, isn't it? His home. The home he never got to see, but is no less a part of him.) crowd around his hospital bed and have long talks with him, filled with banter and laughter. His Marathi is so much better now than it was in September, and he blushes when Kalyani compliments him on it. Rushabh winks at him, and Harry throws a pillow at him, feeling the blood rush to his cheeks at being caught out.
On the last day of school, he hugs Aarzoo around the waist and cries into her stomach. It's the first time he calls her "Aarzoo Tai", and she smiles widely, her own eyes dripping tears. "You will write," she says sternly, "okay? This might be the end of my Hogwarts years, but you are my little brother." He cries harder and nods, refuses to let go until the very last minute.
Harry goes back to Privet Drive with a heavy heart and a proud smile. He isn't inferior to the people there, he knows. He's special. He's Indian. He's James Potter's son, and he's going to live up to it.

Harry is too put together.
Like this kid has no parenting aside from abuse and neglect and then is thrown into a world where everyone wants a piece of him and also is surprisingly emotionally astute.
Why didn't he straight up bite the first person that wanted to shake his hand at the Leaky? It's what a threatened animal would do.
Or Hagrid leaving him to go drink while Harry has to stay navigating unfamiliar world should've gone much worse. If not overtly then at least Harry's thoughts festering with the abandonment issues.
Also killing Quirrell with love my arse. That kid's exposure to love was endless pampering of Dudley and a single Weasley sweater. He needs to realise he has the power to defend himself with magic. Aurors think it's a tragic accident when all the Dursleys die in what seems like an outburst of accidental magic
