Yall need to remember that no matter how popular a fic gets (even if it’s literally the most popular fic on ao3) it still goes against fandom etiquette to publicly hate on it or say that it’s bad. Those opinions belong in private conversations or in your private bookmarks, nowhere else. Fanfics are gifts that we aren’t entitled to, and we have to treat them as such.

One thing that has made me a much more well-adjusted person is a clip I once saw of Hank Green saying that anyone can be in amazing shape as long as being in amazing shape is one of their top three priorities.

(This is obviously a generalization that isn't true for everyone. But it is true for most people and I'm proceeding from there.)

This "top three priorities" framing has genuinely reduced my tendency toward jealousy and self-comparison a lot. Now when I feel envious of someone’s spotless, aesthetic home, I think to myself, “Having a spotless, aesthetic home is probably one of their top three priorities. It’s definitely not one of mine, so I shouldn’t expect my home to look like that.”

Or when I see an influencer with a body that takes a ton of work to maintain: “Maintaining that body is obviously one of her top three priorities, because it’s her livelihood. My livelihood is my brain, so I’m never going to prioritize my body like that.”

It also helps me to identify areas that I actually DO want to prioritize more. I realized in recent years that my envy for my friends who prioritized writing more than I did was NOT going away, so I started to prioritize writing more. (Not top three, but higher priority than it has been in the past.)

Fandom etiquette: don’t publicly rate fanfiction. You’re getting it for free. Don’t like it? Don’t read it. Do not apply your consumerist brain to fan works please it can be so discouraging

If you’re really so desperate to rate fics, do it privately. Use a spreadsheet. You can private bookmarks.

Just be mindful ok?

I really don't understand how "without getting kudos or comments a fanfiction author is going to assume that people who clicked their fic didn't like it" became a controversial take.

I don't know why some people think an author should imagine, or guess that people who click their fic enjoyed it it when nobody is telling them that.

If you're re-reading a fic constantly, or leaving it up in your tab so that it re-loads every day for a hundred days the author is not going to know that unless you tell them. They'd love to hear it. It would make their day.

And if you don't tell them you liked their fic, there's no reason for them to assume you did.

I'm a bit late to this whoops but here's a snippet from the first chapter of the pirate au I'm writing! It begins with Greyback kidnapping Remus when he's five :/

“Da!” Remus sobbed. The monster pulled him through the shattered glass. The tiny shards littering the floor dragged across Remus’ skin, his face. It burned like fire. He was hauled upwards. His feet left the floor, suspended like a rag doll in the monster’s arms. The door flung open. His father burst in. The monster carried Remus through the window, into the night.  “Remus!” His father’s face, his voice, full of rage. His room. All of it - vanished.
