Okay, let's talk about this little moment from early ORV.

Here, Kim Dokja deliberately uses the language of 'tactfully rejecting a further relationship' - 'we had fun together but let's not see each other again' which is something you might say to someone after a first date or, and what is more likely meant here, a one night stand.

The context to this scene is that Kim Dokja temporarily let himself be possesed by a constellation to win a battle, but now the battle is over and he wants the constellation to leave, please and thank you. A one time thing and not an extended relationship. Sounds kind of like a one night stand, doesn't it?

Kim Dokja thought so. While he is only rejecting a further sponsorphip offer, the fact the situation feels like a double entrande is something he himself recognizes and makes a private joke in his mind referencing.

This comparison, no matter how light-hearted, is the first thing in this scene that encourages drawing parrarels between the events happening and sexual imagery in the readers' mind. First, but not the last.

The constellation does not "accept no as an answer" and does not leave, staying in Kim Dokja's body and trying to pressure him into further relations. Even describing it this way sounds...bad. Technically nothing untoward is happening, but an ...uncomfortable... vibe permeates the whole scene, as he repeatedly ignores Kim Dokja's verbal revocation of consent.

"Stop." "I said no." with these words on their own, but even more so compounded with the vague reference to sex a paragraph before, it feels as if we are reading a thinly veiled rape scene.

'Possession as symbolic rape' is well-trodden ground in paranormal stories, as it is often potrayed as the ultimate violation of bodily autonomy.

What ORV does differently from those, is acknowledge the role of 'continuous consent' in what changes 'possession' from fine and even welcomed, as it was before during the fight, to a violation. Which is not a distinction these stories usually make, as it would require potraying possesion as a possibly positive experience - but orv does that many times. In ORV, 'possesion' is not an inherently violating act, it really is only a matter of consent. Like sex is in real life.

My final piece of evidence for us being meant to read this scene as a rape allegory is perhaps the most explicit about it.

The words Kim Dokja says to himself in this situation. A deep breath to calm himself. "This is my body. I would never give it to his guy or any constellation." He explicitly asserts his bodily autonomy, using very loaded language. And these are the words that give him a power-up.

TL,DR: 1. Kim Dokja himself acknowledges that this situation is similar to an affair of a sexual nature. 2. The language used to describe this scene is reminiscient of sex and sexual assault imagery. 3. Possession as rape is a legit analogy that is often used in fiction.

I imagine the after Mihawk’s first duel with Shanks (being both older and vastly more experienced ) he beats him pretty effortlessly but Shanks is an interesting opponent and he can see the strength he will eventually grow into. So when it’s all said and done and Shanks’ lies, defeated, at his feet, red in the face but still smiling. Mihawk, haunting as ever, stares down with unnatural gold eyes and tells him;

“Get stronger, Challenge me again”

And Shanks does.

And I wonder if when it’s all said and done, and Zoro and Mihawk have their fated match up. When Zoro looks down at the pinnacle of everything he wanted to achieve; This god turned mentor turned man, defeated at his feet. I wonder if he’ll remember what Mihawk was like; powerful and bored, and decide he doesn’t want to end up like that. Maybe he’s taken a little too much from his captain, but I wonder if he’ll look down at Mihawk and demand;

“Get stronger, Challenge me again”

I imagine Mihawk would be shocked to hear those words echoing all the way back from boyhood to haunt him at what should be his final moments.

But I wonder how he’d react after the shock. Would he be angry that Zoro didn’t take his life along with his title , outraged at the perceived disrespect. Or maybe some part of him might be happy that this isn’t the end, that he has a dream to channel all his restless energy towards again. Or maybe he’d just be proud, after-all this is the boy he bet it all on, and he’s done it. His student has become the master, the unquestioned greatest.

I don’t really know which I prefer.

But I do think that no matter what, just like Shanks probably did all those years ago, he’d laugh.

Because Mihawk’s never not been excited by a challenge. And when’s the last time he felt the blood boiling in his veins with something to prove.

And so he does.

I'm really curious! I format my posts based on how good they look on my laptop, specifically using this Stylus userstyle by Pixiel (installation guide here) because I can't stand anything but the old Tumblr layout.

I know that some specific post types (mostly bullet / tiny pixel formatting) don't translate the best on mobile because of how they're blown up to fit the screen. I don't plan on changing my post formatting for the mobile gaze... but who knows? x)

I was Once Again thinking about that one SBS question and more specifically about how it had been translated, when I accidentally came across this lowres photo of it (on KnowYourMeme of all places lmao)

So the reason I had been wondering about the actual translation of what Oda said here, is because while Viz translated the first sentence of Oda's reply as "I wonder if any of them have been married.", fantranslations have ranged from "The marriage experience, huh." to "I wonder if any of them have been to a wedding."

Needless to say, those are all very different things.

But now that I got access to the original text, I get to read it for myself and check what Oda actually said! So here goes (assuming I'm parsing the lowres jpg correctly)

結婚経験あるんですかねー。子供がいるのかいないのか知りませんが、とりあえず僕の想像でお楽しみください。 Kekkon keiken arun desu ka nee. Kodomo ga iru no ka inai no ka shirimasen ga, toriaezu boku no souzou de otanoshimi kudasai.

Arguably, the most literal (and thus clunky) translation would go something like "I wonder if they do have experience in marriage. I don't know if they have kids or not, but for now please enjoy what I imagined up". So I would say Viz's official translation is indeed the best/most accurate one-- like for the "been to a wedding" version to be an accurate translation then Oda would've had to say something along the lines of 結婚式に行ったことあるのかな (Kekkonshiki ni itta koto aruno ka na), and the "marriage experience, eh" version excludes Oda wondering if any of the three actually have any.

And, yeah, now I know. Fan vs official translations can have very interesting differences to begin with for a variety of reasons (not even getting to when mistranslations happen, which can and does happen to both), but with a series like this with a lot of "Oda said this" and "Oda said that" going around, it is really nice if you can doublecheck things yourself. Now this translation ghost will no longer haunt me!

And I can focus all my neurons on the missing ring instead!

man not to read too much into spahr's "there was a reason i picked him" about phineas but. i am always keeping in mind that spahr pulled phineas out of the delta personally. he didn't meet phineas as a prospective adsecla he met him as a scared little kid! maybe it wasn't so much that spahr actually thought phineas was the best choice as that he really wanted to believe he was. maybe without even being aware of it! how could he not want to believe in the rags to riches of it all? something that started with that scared little kid HE was able to help save? a tangible representation--beyond valor--of something good he did? but now of course that whole narrative has crumbled around him! phineas did something horrible (that was all spahr's fault as far as he's concerned) and now phineas is dead! that's it! story over! :)

Y'know the thing about writing feral/unhinged versions of Orion/Optimus, is that you can't go too far into the feral/unhinged direction to a point where OP's core character traits are lost or become too diminished. After all, in a multiple-continuity franchise like TF, part of what makes the stories make sense is that even if details change (sometimes major details), the characters are still recognizably themselves to one degree or another. (Although this isn't always the case due to executive meddling or some characters being such blank slates from their initial G1 appearances that there's basically nothing to model them off of, but I digress.)

It's pretty much another reason why I love IDW1 Optimus, bc he literally is a canonical feral/unhinged Optimus who's unhinged as a direct consequence of who he is as a person and what he's been through. Like, he still has those fundamental character traits of trying his best to be moral and make good choices, trying to be a role model, etc, except after 4 million years of war and untreated depression he's basically holding onto his sense of self by his fingertips. So when he "goes feral" e.g. losing his temper and beating up/killing people or saying hurtful things, he's feral in a way that's directly tied to his normal personality and not just as a random quirk he has.

IDW OP's feral moments arise from the gaps between "Optimus' attempts to be who he thinks he needs to be" and "the reality of the world that he can't fix/seems to only make worse" that cause him to lose hope, or become cynical, or lose his temper. But in this case, the unhinged-ness makes perfect sense because it arises out of Optimus trying and failing to be the best person or to make the most morally good choices he's trying to make. Basically, the "feral/unhinged" label is just another way of me trying to say that he's not just unhinged because he's weird or because he's a bad person, but because it's an emotional reaction (more like an emotional explosion due to pent-up emotions) to the context he exists in.

I'd also say that IDW OP's personality being generally reserved/stoic and (trying to be) noble works in tandem with those moments he has of going feral because it makes him more realistic. His psyche is treated in a way where the writers are like, "Hey what if the pressure of having to be everyone's idol and be the best person in the galaxy at all times actually broke Optimus down mentally and emotionally?" It makes IDW OP far more relatable. Instead of naturally being a perfect Christ-like figure who never wavers in his morals or convictions and is just naturally a nice person who always has the wisest and best answer, being a good person is something that IDW OP has to consciously strive to be. Even when he feels like it's useless, or the cycle of violence will never stop, or any attempts he makes to help only ends up with things becoming worse.

And I feel like this does a service not only to IDW Optimus as a character, but also as a sort of moral/philosophical perspective for the reader to ponder upon? I feel like culture at large (or at least my experience of it) tends to believe that "goodness" in a person is simply an innate feature that people are born/not born with, and that being "good" means that you must be good at all times, both in your actions as well as the way you feel emotionally about yourself and the world. Like, there's a tendency for our vision of "a good person" to be good in every aspect at all times without having to try to be a good person. So I think IDW Optimus' character stands as a good example of how someone can be good at heart but still struggle to maintain those feelings of optimism and hope and justice. It's a good idea to have such a paragon of a character (in-universe and out-of-universe) be so conflicted and to even be mistaken, misguided, or make things worse because it shows that goodness is as much about "trying to behave/act in a way that is good" and not just "existing as an innately good person."

It's way more realistic for a person to want to be good, try to be good, and sometimes/often fail than it is for them to just be a good person. I enjoy the fact that IDW Optimus is both a good person at heart, but also has to strive to be a good person and live up to other people's expectations of what they see in him. I like how he wants to be a good person and change society for the better, but he also spends a good amount of time either feeling hopeless and alone or being angry at/detached from other people because of how frustrated they make him. He's realistically portrayed as someone who wants to be good and hopeful and change things for the better, but is also mentally and emotionally broken by that burden because of how impossible it is for him to Fix Everything and be the Perfect Prime/Leader/Autobot that people see him as. It's this fascinating mixture of "yes, this is who he is as a person" but also "there are things he desires to be that he could never possibly become or live up to."

This got really far off based from feral/unhinged Optimus sdklfjaslkdlfkas. The TLDR is that if people want unhinged OP, I feel like they should give IDW OP a chance because he IS unhinged but he's unhinged in a way that's a realistic/thematic representation of how being an Absolute Good is impossible. And how being a good person isn't just about Existing And You Are A Good Person, but rather goodness is a constant state of flux in which you adjust, you make mistakes, you lose your temper and feel hopeless, but then you pick yourself up and try again.

Also IDW OP really likes climbing in dangerous wilderness and jumping out of flying vehicles which I think is very feral and sexy of him to do.
