Yeah, it's one of those situations where the Kanji and the furigana don't match in the original Japanese! They're spelled as the one and pronounced as the other, which is why some translations use "Abyss", others "Pentagram" and others both. So it's a single word with dual meaning in the original.

Oda does this very often, same issue happened with "Sunstone Painters", where it's spelled with the kanji for "Sunstone" but given the furigana/pronunciation of "Painter".

That being said, yeah, that's how I kinda assume it works anyway. There could still be a "place" of sorts that's connects these pentagrams, even if the transport is instantaneous enough that those who travel through it don't notice. But we just don't know yet.

Either way, we still don't have enough information about how this all works in general! Imu's powers are still a mystery, but an interesting one indeed.

ulti and page one (re)appeared on chapter 1139, which was released on feb 10th in japan. that's also page one's birthday!

ulti being tied on a giant wheel in chapter 1140 is a fun coincidence because big mom used those as a punishment (more like execution) method and it's exactly 100 chapters after kid and law defeated her

That's really fun actually! I do hope fan predictions are right, and the Dino Siblings end up becoming Yamato's retainers after he rescues them, as a parallel to Oden.

hi! a little theory abt awakened zoan fruits and hagoromo

"normal" zoans have powers of existing animals so the hagoromo, a sign of divinity, is a distinctive sign of awakening AND the user is in control of the fruit powers. this is why lucci and kaku's awakened forms have black hagoromo but the impel down wardens don't

this could apply to ancient zoans too since those animals have existed at some point in the past. ancient times hunting techniques and all

on the other hand, mythical zoans, in particular those inspired by east asian mythology like the ookuchi no makami and the kirin, might have a white hagoromo even when not awakened because they are already deities to begin with. their awakening might be an alternate and more powerful form, like kaido's while using shuron hakke

Yeah, my thoughts have always been somewhere along that line! Especially considering the hagoromo is a symbol of celestials and/or divinity in actual mythology.

I do still wonder about the black and white distinction, though. I've heard some people say it's about artificial vs. natural awakening, but as you brought up, we don't know if Yamato is even awakened or not. Perhaps the color does mean something, but perhaps it's just purely stylistic, and we're wasting our time, haha. We can't know until Oda says something about it.

After all, he uses the hagoromo as a design element in some non-zoan characters too, be it via clothing or other ways, for the same symbolism. Such as the Neptune family and their references to the Urashima Taro & the Dragon Palace tales. Something something, Hell is on top of the world (Marijoa, Imu is literally the Devil) and Heaven is at its bottom (Ryuguu Kingdom). Even Caesar, who isn't divinity but has such an inflated ego that he sees himself as a god, has a mock imitation hagoromo made of gas.

Anyway, I'm surprised the hagoromo thing hasn't been an SBS question yet or something, honestly!

I know a lot of people have said it already but the modified supersoldier genetics is literally the only thing keeping Sanji's lungs alive at the moment. It's the only reason he's still with us. That lung tissue is working its ass off every day repairing itself from the tobacco damage every 5 minutes.

Chopper has been trying to figure this mystery out since day one with no luck. By all means he should have been a goner by now. He really loves cigarette.

I wonder if “the Abyss” is an actual place people can go to, or it’s just the term for whatever allows them to travel

One Piece 1140

Finally found the time to do a small chapter review again! Haven't done one of those in ages.

For starters, now that the fight between Luffy and Gabban has begun, I love how slaptick-y it immediately is. It's a scuffle between two extremely powerful individuals, but it's entirely unserious, as it should be. Luffy will turn anything he gets involved in in a looney tunes bit, love to see those cartoony elements even before Gear 5 is used! Giant Haki Key Bonk.

Oh and of course this. This is a straight up Tom and Jerry bit. This is so much more fun to me than generic un-choreographed shounen action, this is what I love about One Piece!!! Again, we're not even doing Gear 5 yet but its influence is rubbing off on the fight direction overall, I'm so so glad about it.

And of course we get a short little Zoro and Luffy team-up. Neither of them care about this being some sort of fair duel, they just want to get the key and screw off of the castle lol. We also finally get a closer look at the Elbaf version of Gear 5! We saw glimpses of it in the beginning but it's easier to see here! I loooove that we're already getting alternate designs for it each arc!

And of course, Gabban immediately gives up. I saw some people say this reminded them a bit of Crocus, which like, yeah! They're both Roger Pirates and we saw them hang out in that cover page, it's fun to see the bit of them knowing when to give up. For starters, he was just testing Luffy and he got to see what he wanted at this point. But an extra layer to this, is that one panel with the shine in his eye, which could easily be him using future sight, and seeing what that Zoro-Luffy combo attack would look like, before they had the chance to pull it off. I'm gonna go with that interpretation for now, lol.

This panel actually particularly stood out to me. "If Elbaph is still safe." We know the God's Knights are about to attempt to kidnap Elbaph's children. And that includes Gabban's son. I feel like this nonchalance of his here, is probably gonna be juxtaposed to what might actually end up happening to Collen later. I wonder how much Gabban will get involved, or even regret his calm here, if something like that happens and his little big guy gets hurt. It almost sounds like he's either predicted, or is expecting, that something is gonna go wrong....

And here's the big reveal of this chapter! Two whole new Gods' Knights! And both of them are confirmed to be Celestial Dragons, with their family names and everything. It's interesting to me then, that Gunko is the only one who hasn't been given a family name yet.

Anyway, my bets now on Kiringham / Qilingam having the Mythical Ox-Ox Fruit Model Kirin/Qilin. I mean, the design checks out and it's literally in his name. Interesting to see a CD in a hybrid zoan form. And the most interesting part is that he has a white hagoromo! So far it's been a theory that only awakened zoans have these, and from what we've seen they're always either white or black. CP0 had black hagoromos, and so did the Five Elders, even though we don't know if they're zoans or not. Luffy, Yamato and Qilingam over here, are the only ones with a white hagoromo, if my memory serves right. What does this all mean? Hell if I know.

It's also interesting to me that Qilingam has the CD bubble-helmet, when none of the other God's Knights so far have it. Maybe he's particularly snobbish or hypochondriac about the whole "breathing mortal air" thing compared to the rest of them? Who knows. I also wonder, like with Morgan, if we're ever gonna see his non-hybrid human form.

With that out of the way though, we finally have a new Celestial Dragon clan with this! The Limosiv Family. That, combined with the 10 Families we already knew about, makes 11 out of 20 total. That is because "Shephard" is one we already knew of, it's the same family as Saint Shephard Ju Peter. Which means Summers over here is a relative of Ju Peter.

Anyway, Summers asks Shamrock if he was "visiting Harald's grave or something", which instantly rings alarm bells. I think that this all but confirms that Harald had some sort of tie or relationship with the World Government. Did he work with them? Was he being taken advantage by them? It's too early to tell, but I get the feeling that he was up to no good, as most people have predicted.

And we close off the chapter with Shamrock acting very very much so like his father during the God Valley incident. Wanting to turn the kidnapping of Elbaph's children into a game? Very familiar cruelty indeed.

This chapter did let us see more of a glimpse into both Shamrock and Gunko as personalities, whereas, so far, they were a bit void of it. We're starting to see who they are as people, very interesting!

A lot of people might look at this as a relatively uneventful chapter, but I actually have like, Thoughts. Like I feel like a looot of small subtle things were foreshadowed or implied.....

Also, for those who've read it already, without spoiling things too much: we've finally reached 12/20... we're so close to having them All. IYKYK.

Please, that man is not a father figure. He has never in his life been a father figure. He is a weird wine uncle at best. He's the eccentric wine uncle you only see in the holidays, who brings you lavish gifts but doesn't utter a world to you during family dinner. It's what he was born to be.

The Moria erasure is insane that man raised that girl himself. That's his crazy pink goth spoiled princess whomst he found after he had lost everything. I'm not even a Moria fan or anything that man has issues and I have many other villains I tend to prefer but like. He might not be a good person but hell if he isn't a good dad. Everything she wanted was hers, of course she's going after him to save him even all the way to Hachinosu.
