Tutorial for drawing characters with cleft lip! Sorry that it's mostly unilateral-centric but it makes up the vast majority of resources and photos. Still tried to get tips for drawing bilateral clefts in though.
Keep in mind that this is an introductory drawing tutorial and has some generalizations in it, so not every “X is Z” statement will be true for Actual People 👍
If you draw any characters using this feel free to tag me!

Hi, I am writing and drawing a comic and have a character with russell-silver syndrome, one of which her related symptoms is kyphosis. I have found various accommodations that she can use in the story and am pretty pleased with her writing. However, it is very hard for me to find reference images for how to draw kyphosis , even if i search up using the not-ideal and bad term ‘hunchback’. If there is any advice you have or people in your audience who know where to find reference images or resources, that is appreciated. Sorry if phrasing is peculiar
Hi!
I don't have RSS, but I have hyperkyphosis!
A lot of the medical drawings that come up on Google are kinda oversimplified but accurate! I can try listing some things that would be great to include;
The head goes far forward. Try drawing her neck on an angle rather than straight.
If it goes really forward, she could have some degree of underbite (like I do).
There will be a hump on her upper back, it will start right after her neck ends. It could go through the rest of her back and make it seem round as a whole, or just be a visible bump under the neck.
Her shoulders will go inward and look much rounder than usual. Don't give her a very square-y frame there.
She will look shorter. How much will depend on the severity of her kyphosis, but she will.
If her kyphosis isn't very severe, she would be able to "straighten" her back and not show most of the above (other than the hump itself). Most of us can't keep this up for long, I for example start to feel pain and other issues comically quickly, so I rarely bother. But if you ever want her to get slightly taller to maybe reach for something, she would probably be able to.
Remember that this is a chronic pain condition. I readjust how I sit, crack my neck, stretch, and do weird neck movements a lot to mitigate it at least a bit. Some of these mannerisms could be nice to include!
I'm not familiar with any visual tutorials for drawing kyphosis, but if any followers could help out, it would be great!
Thanks for your ask!

(I really wanted to take a shot at giving them all more than 1-3ish outfits that I think fit their styles)

Just a reminder that unless your amputee character lost their limb less than a month ago, their stumps don't need to be bandaged.

Eärendil the Mariner
Who deserves a pirate outfit more than Eärendil?
The background is largely inspired by one of Philip Sue's paintings. It was fun to draw a flat earth!
In other news, I love drawing ships but that was the worst angle possible to figure out. In my head, the Silmaril is at the prow in some kind of glass/mirror lantern that amplifies its light.
I wanted him to look soft, and little wry maybe, rather than fierce. I'm sure he's fierce aplenty but I mostly headcanon him as tired. His fate breaks my heart. Also, it doesn't really show here but my Eärendil is blind from overexposure to the Silmaril (and half-human fragile eyes).
I always waver between giving him locs or a shorter Mannish haircut, but his hair is really too kinky for the shoulder-length, Aragorn-style cut, so locs it is!

Did another one of these 😸 still learning how to draw powerchairs and all! it's fun :-)
previous drawings of the series; [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]
[Image description: Digital drawing of multiple disabled characters, all in pastel blues and purples. In the top left is a long-haired man with a cane, leaning towards a Black girl in a powerchair, who's shyly looking away. Below them are two people; an older white trans woman with many vitiligo spots, and a young Black enby with visible goiter. They are discussing something while wearing face masks and gesturing with their hands. In the center of the image is a fat Black woman in a light pink hijab, smiling and doing a peace sign; she has an orthosis on her left leg with a cheetah pattern. On the right side of the image is a scene between three people; a dark-skinned Indian woman is elevating herself with her powerchair to take a picture of a Black girl using a similar wheelchair, and her girlfriend who is missing his right eye. They're both smiling and posing for the picture. Behind them, a white trans girl using crutches and a trans guy with achondroplasia are looking at each other lovingly. End image description.]

At first I had thought that Rudolph was strapped in to the front of the sleigh, but then I noticed his hind legs were being supported. It's a mobility aid! So clever!
Tumblr media
That's right! This is rudolph's self contained unit that allows him to move around on the snow. When he visits sunny climates, he switches the sled out for wheels.
The front part of the harness and the wooden sled shape is based on traditional sami sled gear, with the supports carefully based off goat wheelchairs.

Here's a breakdown of how it works engineering-wise. The goal was to make something that he could get in and out of on his own, like most people who use wheelchairs. The only hand-wave is to give his mouth magic knot-tying abilities that typical cartoon animals tend to have.
Tumblr media
While most goat chairs use dog harnesses (including a connection between collar and cinch like a horse breastcollar) reindeer's main point of pulling is the collar. There are two straps on either side of a somewhat stiff collar that serves the same purpose as a yoke for draft animals. They can push forward with their shoulders into the collar and drag their burden without putting weight on their trachea, nor pulling too much with the cinch.
Rudolph simply slips into the collar and buckles his cinch around his ribs, then he is ready for the chair.
Tumblr media
Here's what the sled looks like without Rudolph in it. He puts his legs through the two leg support straps, and rests his hocks on the padded bar. His belly is supported by a wide, soft strap that bears the weight of his back end. There is an optional seatbelt that goes over his rump if he knows he's going to be going at high speeds. For short walks, he can leave it off. This makes getting in and out of his sleigh easier.
Tumblr media
Here's all the pieces assembled together! I'll probably add some crossbeams under his back legs for stability. It was really challenging to blend modern animal wheelchairs with traditional sleigh construction (including rope ties rather than buckles) but in the end we have a cute, believable mobility aid for the most famous reindeer of all.

Here's Little Ru, ready for a casual walk in the snow.

no joke but what I really want for Buddy Daddies as a fandom is to make fanart and fanfic post present time ep12 where Rei wears an arm orthosis when working.
I think varied disability aids being represented would be fantastic, and personally would write Rei as someone being deeply proud of something he's done for his family, but also understanding with time that using an orthosis also helps him at work and in raising Miri. with a giant portion of mobility/motorics aids being represented by prosthetics, seeing more variety and exploring it in fiction would also help making a step in normalising disability treatments.
