heyyyyy reminder for other cane users.
don't forget that cane tips need to be replaced.
i've been using my cane for almost two years on a near daily basis and i JUST switched out the tip and

the new tip versus the old tip. i'm not sure how clear it is but, YEAH, there's like. half a millimeter of tread left on the old tip, if that
the replacement was LITERALLY 2 dollars. i bought two to justify the four dollar shipping but. TWO BUCKS.
i had noticed that i was having slipping issues on linoleum recently, but i did not realize how bad the issue had gotten until the new tips came so. PLEASE check your cane treads and if they're notably worn out PLEASE get yourself a new tip they're SO cheap and the grip i get on the new one is INSANE
please don't forget to replace your cane tips!

Winter Reminder for Mobility Aid Users
For those of us heading into winter in the northern hemisphere, particularly in areas where it gets snowy or icey, if you haven't already done so now is probably the time to start thinking about winter-readying your mobility aid(s).
Crutch, Cane, and non wheel-ed Walker Frame users: Depending on the typical winter weather conditions for you this might just be making sure your ferrules/tips of your canes/crutches are in good condition or it could mean getting new, potentially winter specific, ferrules/tips and/or investing in ice pick attachments!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For those with wheeled mobility aids, from Rollators to Wheelchairs and beyond: Depending on the condition of your wheels/tyres and whether or not you can easily get spares or ones specific to winter weather what you might be able to do varies, especially when replacing multiple entire wheels can be quite costly. @cripple-punk-dad has a good recommendation on this post regarding using zip ties to add tread to wheels. (credit for the two images of zip ties on wheels and their alt text also goes to cripple-punk-dad)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
you can also look at getting wheel socks/slippers/covers for when indoors to protect your floors from any added tread, these come in a whole range of sizes for both smaller caster wheels as well as large wheelchair wheels.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For those who self-propel wheelchairs: make sure you've got good gloves and take a look to see if you can get some good non slip push rim covers!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Those whose mobility aids entail sitting may also want to look into wheelchair specific blankets, and in general everyone should make sure that they have weather appropriate clothing where possible!
Tumblr media
It may also be the case that your mobility aid needs are different/higher this season, you do not need to be ashamed of this. Cold weather can worsen symptoms for many people and icey conditions especially can make it harder to safely walk outside, even for able-bodied people. Stay safe out there!

I can't believe the auction site didn't have video of this, but apparently this walking cane featured a button that would make the cats' tongues stick out when pressed! Source.

Dear non-cane users please try and learn these DOS AND DONTs because they are basic respect and necessary for our lives:
Ask if I need help picking something up: ✅
Be patient with my walking speed ✅
If we are together, walk at the same pace as me even if its slower: ✅
If my cane is in the way of something politely ask me to adjust its location: ✅
If my cane drops pick it up and directly hand it to me: ✅
(Medical professionals) ask if I need a non-metal walker or wheelchair if my cane is unsafe in a specific medical area (such as MRI): ✅
DON'T BE OFFENDED WHEN I SAY NO (to ANY of these): ✅
Compliment my cane: ✅
Ask where I bought my cane: ✅
Move my cane away from me: 🚫
Touch my cane without permissions: 🚫
Use my cane as a toy in any way, even if I am not using it: 🚫
Ask me why I use my cane (unless imperative to your job): 🚫
Expect me to walk without my cane for any distance: 🚫
Tell me you're sorry I have to use a cane: 🚫
Encourage me not to use my cane: 🚫
Tell me you'll pray for me because you see I use a cane: 🚫

"If you can't beat the odds, change the game" from the book series "Six of Crows" by Leigh Bardugo. A fantastic read I highly recommend. a sticker design I made inspired by the character Kaz Brekker. (yes I'm aware that for most of the story he's a fan of gloves) It was interesting trying to work with a simpler style than I'm used to.

Yesterday, when I was sleeping during a study hall at school, some kids I kind of knew (who KNEW I have a disability) took my cane and started swinging it around, using it like a bat, and playing with it. People assumed I'd given it to them, because when asked to stop, they said no and continued. By the time someone woke me up and told me, they had broken the wrist strap and were pulling apart the pole to stretch the folding elastic. They did not say sorry. They did not take responsibility. They simply gave it back after saying "look, did you know it could do this?" and stretching the elastic again. My friends reprimanded them, but now the wrist strap connection is broken and keeps falling off my wrist, putting me in danger.
The day before this happened, they had asked to hold the cane, and I said no.
Stop feeling entitled to touch people's medical aids. Stop acting like they're not really necessary or important. Stop fucking breaking our shit.

I’ve never seen younger people using canes. That is why I use my cane with pride so that I may be the person that assures another that they have a right to stability. They have the right to the independence and support of a mobility aid. I hope that by living my life as I choose I may be able to drown out some of the rampant ableism being fired at the youth of our community.

Feeling better after using an aid/accomodation/treatment does NOT mean you're better and should stop using it. That is the DEVIL talking.
