Clover's Recipe - visual development - 2018-2020: Paintings I made for a series pitch idea created with my friend Rachel Howell while we both were painting on SU the movie. We both were very influenced obviously by SU, but also a lot by Bee and Puppycat, and Sky: Children of the Light...and that might be a little too obvious in my paintings here looking back lol. We made a whole pitch bible with character bios, episode summaries, themes, but we never finished/pitched it as we both got so busy with work and freelance in the last few years (and also it seems nothing gets greenlit these days anyway....) so this is as far as I got art wise! Maybe we'll bring the idea back to life sometime. The art mood board was pretty much Kiki's Delivery Service meets Zelda/Mario/Kirby but i'm not sure I'll ever figure out how to paint ghibli style, so that might not come across haha - also the colorscript in here I never finished sadly .... i would love to go back to it sometime.

Ohh your OC Nuromai looks really interesting, can you tell us smth about them? I love your design!

Huff I'm terribly flattered, let me think! Besides them being a DnD character, and the more forward stuff uhhh uhh what can I share-- I could share some lore?? He's one of many direct divine descendants of one entity, him and his siblings are each said to be one of her shedded feathers gaining sentience. All his folk, and there are thousands, besides his mother, are socially/linguistically considered his siblings, but they can pretty much look like anything/anyone, and he's not particularly close to any of them, besides maybe 2-3. He met his own "mother" maybe like... 1-2 times in his entire life, so he's a bit mentally detached from the "human" concept of family. Most of his misconceptions around the terms "family", "siblings" and "parents" came through mistranslations of his language, given his want to share in human culture, he often attempts to relate experiences that are difficult to compare, and it's been causing him some grief, to be sure.

(I don't have a lot of art of his mother, given she's.. died before the campaign started, but here u go, have some concepts. I think I could never quite settle on a certain visual for her, given I don't think Nuromai remembers her very well at all, so trying to match his perception of her, I kept her visuals quite hazy/uncertain. Visual trait: Tall???) (Bonus fact: He's recently been asked to seek out her undying/undead remains to end her, oops.)

Personal artwork of my character Atram.

I associate Atram's nature with a poetic idea of bringing light into darkness, and that was what his character was born from. However, it's not that Atram hates darkness or tries to get rid of it, rather the opposite - he loves it and is fascinated by it; darkness is the unknown, the thirst for knowledge, for the hidden and mysterious, the forbidden. It combines an alluring potential and an inexorable abyss, and Atram's fire can be seen as a metaphor of his vision and passion, the light of his love and strive to understand.

Despite his seriousness, I see Atram (especially in his youth) as a dreamer - he often has his mind in the clouds, or rather somewhere in the dark depths of space, full of mystery, potential and wonder, and so I wanted to portray this side of him.

I also wanted to finally draw the look I once saw in his youth - with long hair combed back, and with a small pointy beard, which gives his appearance a slightly different character. I also added earrings which have appeared in some of my older art. Not sure about them and their placement, but it seems to be a detail of the Desert Kotie's culture, so it makes sense for young Atram to have them.

I used 3D reference for both the head and lighting; this angle is so difficult to draw! But I like the result, and the atmosphere feels right - I usually see Atram in a purely warm, orange or red atmosphere, but the red and blue combination also feels right for him.

Overview of some topics when it comes to drawing characters who are burn survivors.

DISCLAIMER. Please keep in mind that this is an introductory overview for drawing some burn scars and has a lot of generalizations in it, so not every “X is Z” statement will be true for Actual People. I'm calling this introductory because I hope to get people to actually do their own research before drawing disabled & visibly different characters rather than just making stuff up. Think of it as a starting point and take it with a grain of salt (especially if you have a very different art style from mine).

Talking about research and learning... don't make your burn survivor characters evil. Burn survivors are normal people and don't deserve to be constantly portrayed in such a way.

second way more important edit: How are people seeing this post where I specifically talk about burn survivors being normal, real people, and still tag this as "TW body horror"? Not a single one of these drawings or pictures is a fresh injury. All of them are healed. How the hell would you feel if someone tagged a photo of you as "trigger warning: gore"?

Disabled people are not your fucking body horror. Grow up.
