Die Hard 2: Die Harder (1990)

“How can the same shit happen to the same guy twice?”
You’re right, John McClane, Die Hard 2 is improbable. When the results are this entertaining, who are we to complain? It’s got the hero we love back in full form, big action set pieces that’ll knock your socks off and a worthy adversary of a villain. It's a sequel that satisfies.
Two years after the incident at the Nakatomi Plaza, LA police officer John McClane (Bruce Willis) is waiting for his wife Holly (Bonnie Bedelia) to arrive at the airport. As her flight approaches, former U.S. Special Forces Colonel William Stuart (William Sadler) and his men hack into the airport’s traffic control system, take over all communication and hold the flights above hostage. They demand General Ramon Esperanza (Franco Nero), recently arrested and on his way to the United States, be delivered to them - or else.
I often see Die Hard listed as “the best Christmas movie”, which I'm almost certain is a gag answer. It’s not really about the spirit of the holidays; it’s merely set during the season. The same applies to this underrated sequel. McClane is back. This time, he feels less vulnerable than he did before but that’s ok. He’s once again out of his element and forced to use his wits to outgun and outmaneuver opponents who outnumber him about 12-to-1. Like before, his wife is being incidentally held hostage. Throughout the film, you’re always worried the villains will find out and that she’ll be used against our hero. You believe Stuart would sink that low. He’s as ruthless as he is good at the whole bad guy thing. The stakes feel even higher than they did last time. We’re not talking about a couple dozen hostages. It’s entire planes full of innocents who don’t even know they’re in danger.
The situation's intensity is cranked way up because of the villains’ plan. They’re not in the airport itself, but they have to be close. While navigating the corridors of red tape put up by the bewildered and panicked airport security, McClane has a mystery to solve. A mystery with a time limit. For now, the planes are circling above but their fuel won't last forever. The stakes and time limit keep the plot moving from one big action scene to the next. The stunts and special effects dwarf everything we saw previously. That’s the right way to go about it. If you can’t be as smart and tense as Die Hard, double-down on the spectacle. It adds up to the same results.
There’s just the right amount of one-liners and jokes to ease the tension before director Renny Harlin puts you through the wringer again. The side characters - played by Dennis Franz, John Amos, Art Evans - are memorable. Their little arcs add a lot of life to this twisty thriller. Just when you think McClane’s gotten a break, some new obstacle pops up. When he does manage to overcome one, the big set pieces will have you pumping your fists and cheering. You just hate those baddies so much that seeing them get riddled with holes, blown up or otherwise taken down makes it feel like a proper Christmas wish come true.
While you might raise an eyebrow at Die Hard 2 initially, in no time at all, it’ll have you nervously stuffing your face with popcorn, wondering how our hero will make it out of this dire situation alive. Here's an idea. In the same way that you should occasionally swap out Home Alone from your holiday roster with Home Alone 2 to keep things fresh, why not do the same with Die Hard and Die Hard 2? (On Blu-ray, February 7, 2020)

At the 84th Annual Peabody Awards, the Star Trek franchise received the Peabody Institutional Award which is given annually to recognize an organization or long-running television program that has made an indelible mark on the American broadcasting landscape.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds cast members Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn and Ethan Peck joined fellow Star Trek franchise actors and creatives on stage as executive producer Alex Kurtzman accepted the award.
Kurtzman spoke about the almost 60 year legacy of the franchise that has given hope to us all and that no matter who you are there is a place for you in the Star Trek family. He also recognized Bjo Trimble, who was in attendance, and was part of a successful "Save Star Trek" campaign in 1968, generally credited with allowing the series to run for a third season rather than being cancelled after two.
Also in attendance were Patrick Stewart, LeVar Burton, Scott Bakula, Jeri Ryan, Wilson Cruz, Doug Jones, Tawny Newsome, Sam Richardson, Akiva Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers, Michelle Paradise, Olatunde Osunsanmi, Noga Landau, Jenny Lumet, Trevor Roth and J.J. Abrams.

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
September 7, 2024
Heather Cox Richardson
Sep 08, 2024
By rights, tonight’s post should be a picture, but Trump’s behavior today merits a marker because it feels like a dramatic escalation of the themes we’ve seen for years. Please feel free to ignore—as I often say, I am trying to leave notes for a graduate student in 150 years, and you can consider this one for her if you want a break from the recent onslaught of news.
Yesterday, Trump ranted at the press, furious that the American legal system had resulted in two jury decisions that he had defamed and sexually abused writer E. Jean Carroll. He was so angry that, with his lawyers standing awkwardly behind him, he told reporters: “I’m disappointed in my legal talent, I’ll be honest with you.”
Today, Trump held a rally in Mosinee, Wisconsin, a small city in the center of the state, where he addressed about 7,000 people. A number of us who have been watching him closely have been saying for a while that when voters actually saw him in this campaign, they would be shocked at how he has deteriorated, and that seems to be true: his meandering and self-indulgent speeches have had attendees leaving early, some of them bewildered. In today’s speech, Trump slurred a number of words, referring to Elon Musk as “Leon,” for example, and forgetting the name of North Dakota governor Doug Burgum, who was on his short list for a vice presidential pick.
But today’s speech struck me as different from his past performances, distinguished for what sounded like desperation. Trump has always invented his stories from whole cloth, but there used to be some way to tie them to reality. Today that seemed to be gone. He was in a fantasy world, and his rhetoric was apocalyptic. It was also bloody in ways that raise huge red flags for scholars of fascism.
Trump told the audience that when he took office in 2017, military officers told him the U.S. had given all the military’s ammunition away to allies. Then he went on a rant against our allies, saying that they’re only our allies when they need something and that they would never come to our aid if we needed them. This echoes the talking points put out by Russian operatives and flies in the face of the fact that the one time the North Atlantic Treaty Organization invoked the mutual defense pact in that agreement was after the attacks of September 11, 2001, in support of the U.S.
He embraced Project 2025’s promise to eliminate the Department of Education and send education back to the states so that right-wing figures like Wisconsin’s Senator Ron Johnson can run it. He reiterated the MAGA claim that mothers are executing their babies after birth—this is completely bonkers—and again echoed Russian talking points when he said these executions are happening—they are not—but “nobody talks about it.” He went on: “We did a great thing when we got Roe v. Wade out of the federal government.”
He reiterated the complete fantasy that schools are performing gender-affirming surgery on children. “Can you imagine you're a parent and your son leaves the house and you say, Jimmy, I love you so much, go have a good day at school, and your son comes back with a brutal operation. Can you even imagine this? What the hell is wrong with our country?” Trump’s suggestion that schools are performing surgery on students is bananas. This is simply not a thing that happens.
And then he went full-blown apocalyptic, attacking immigrants and claiming that crime, which in reality has dropped dramatically since President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris took office after a spike during his own term, has made the U.S. uninhabitable. He said that “If I don’t win Colorado, it will be taken over by migrants and the governor will be sent fleeing.” "Migrants and crime are here in our country at levels never thought possible before…. You're not safe even sitting here, to be honest with you. I'm the only one that's going to get it done. Everybody is saying that." He urged people to protest “because you’re being overrun by criminals.”
He assured attendees that "If you think you have a nice house, have a migrant enjoy your house, because a migrant will take it over. A migrant will take it over. It will be Venezuela on steroids." He reiterated his plan to get rid of migrants. “And you know,” he said, “getting them out will be a bloody story.”
He went on to try to rev up supporters in words very similar to those he used on January 6th, 2021, but focused on this election. “Every citizen who’s sick and tired of the parasitic political class in Washington that sucks our country of its blood and treasure, November fifth will be your liberation day. November fifth, this year, will be the most important day in the history of our country because we’re not going to have a country anymore if we don’t win.”
He promised: “I will prevent World War III, and I am the only one that can do it. I will prevent World War III. And if I don’t win this election,... Israel is doomed…. Israel will be gone…. I’d better win.”
"I better win or you're gonna have problems like we've never had. We may have no country left. This may be our last election. You want to know the truth? People have said that. This may be our last election…. It’ll all be over, and you gotta remember…. Trump is always right. I hate to be right. I’m always right.”
Trump's hellscape is only in his mind: crime is sharply down in the U.S. since he left office, migrant crossings have plunged, and the economy is the strongest in the world.
Then, tonight, Trump posted on his social media site a rant asserting that he will win the 2024 election but that he expects Democrats to cheat, and “WHEN I WIN, those people that CHEATED will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the Law, which will include long term prison sentences so that this Depravity of Justice does not happen again. We cannot let our Country further devolve into a Third World Nation, AND WE WON’T! Please beware that this legal exposure extends to Lawyers, Political Operatives, Donors, Illegal Voters, & Corrupt Election Officials. Those involved in unscrupulous behavior will be sought out, caught, and prosecuted at levels, unfortunately, never seen before in our Country.”
Is it the Justice Department indictments that showed Russia is working to get him reelected? Is it the rising popularity of Democratic nominees Kamala Harris and Tim Walz? Is it fury at the new grand jury’s indicting him for his attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 election and install himself in power? Is it fear of Tuesday’s debate with Harris? Is it a declining ability to grapple with reality?
Whatever has caused it, Trump seems utterly off his pins, embracing wild conspiracy theories and, as his hopes of winning the election appear to be crumbling, threatening vengeance with a dogged fury that he used to be able to hide.

Fuck it, more The Magnus Archives fancast...
Tom Sturridge as Gerard Keay
Let. Tom. Grow. Out. His. Hair! He did incredible as Morpheus in Sandman and I just know he could do that miserable monster manual justice.

Éva Magyar as Mary Keay
I'm not too familiar with her acting so I'm going by looks and vibes. She's got the cheekbones.

Lindsay Duncan as Gertrude Robinson
I have a good feeling about her. I only know her from Doctor Who and Sherlock but I feel she looks and could act the part of Gertrude. Put an oversized cardigan on her and a manipulative look in her eye and we've got a Gertrude.

Sam Reid as Michael Shelley
I was conflicted on this as for the longest time Cody Fern was my Michael fancast...but Sam Reid's performance in AMC's Interview with the Vampire changed me (in a lot of ways but anyway). Lestat and Michael tend to fall in the same category in my mind (manic manipulative blondes) and if Sam can play Lestat, he can play Michael. And my god can he play Lestat...
He does need to master the laugh though. It's no Michael without that laugh.

Claudia Doumit as Helen Richardson
Honestly I only know her from The Boys but I feel that she could body Helen. Put her in a pantsuit and we are ready to go spiralling.

Stellan Skarsgård as Jurgen Leitner
Stellan is a powerhouse of an actor and I believe he can do any role he is given justice. Villainous? He can do it to a T. Plus Norwegian and swedish aren't that different. They're neighbors...

Mads Mikkelsen as Peter Lukas
Look I know most people want him as Elias but I see him way more as the recluse, Peter. Just paint him to look a little more pale and you've got it. His voice and demeanor are easily haunting when he wants them to be.

Tom Hardy AND Doug Jones as Jared Hopworth
Ok hear me out, Jared is described as being...well, ever-changing. I think Tom could do the voice (his venom is proof) and he could be the "large man with a handsome face" version of Jared. But Doug can be the more...deformed versions. If you give Doug enough makeup and time to contort himself that man can do anything. Tom would still be the voice due to Doug's being not quite right for Jared. Anyway I love Doug and would cast him in everything if I could.

Anya Taylor Joy as Agnes Montague
She's an incredibly talented actress and she has the deer in headlights eyes like no other. I considered Mia Goth but she just didn't quite fit right. Just put a red wig on her and that's Agnes right there.

Side note: after looking at Doug Jones I've decided this completely fake adaptation would be directed by Guillermo Del Toro.

In the medibay, Douglas is seated by Martin's bedside, his usual sharp gaze replaced by an expression of worried helplessness. "Doug-Douglas," Martin's voice is strained and breathless. "Where... where are we?" The captain's eyes lack the focus and clarity he once commanded while piloting their own vessel. It's as though he's struggling to piece together his surroundings.
"I'm right here," Douglas assures, his voice firm yet laced with a touch of fatherly concern. It takes Martin a few moments to respond, his fragmented memories slowly coalescing. "Where... where are we?" he queries.
"We're aboard the mining ship Red Dwarf," Douglas manages to say between breaths as he composes himself. His voice cracks a bit, giving way under the weight of his own fears. "You had a bit of a setback, but you're safe now." Martin's gaze drifts around the room, his eyes remain unfocused.
"Red...Dwarf...right, but why?" Martin's gaze drifts around the room, his eyes still unfocused. Douglas exchanges a worried glance with Kryten and then to Carolyn as the first officer remains near Martin's bedside.
"You had a psychogenic blackout, Martin. It's... well, it's a bit complicated, but you're recovering now," he explains to the best of his ability. "You had us worried."
"Psychogenic blackout?" Martin says, suspicion evident in his tone. "I... I...don't understand."
Douglas finds himself suppressing a sob, mustering the strength to swallow the burning lump forming in his throat. His own emotions loom close, but he battles to retain his composure, his voice unwavering and gentle. "It's a type of reaction to stress, Martin. Essentially, your mind temporarily shuts down as a coping mechanism. But you're moving forward, and Kryten is looking after you diligently."
"Kryten," Douglas mutters under his breath, his voice laced with a blend of fear and desperation as his concerns for the captain's recovery intensify. "How long do you estimate?" The first officer's tone echoes that of a concerned parent, as the mechanoid begins to discern.
"It's challenging to provide an exact time-frame, Mr. Richardson," Kryten responds, his mechanical voice calm and methodical. "Given the complexities of psychogenic blackouts and individual responses to treatment, it could vary. However, with our advanced medical facilities, I'm cautiously optimistic that we can observe significant improvement within a few days to a week. We'll closely monitor Captain Martin's progress and make any necessary adjustments to his treatment plan."
Carolyn stands by Douglas's side, offering a reassuring touch to his back in an attempt to provide comfort. "Douglas, things will be alright," she says, her voice steady and comforting. As she places her hand on him, she senses his irregular heartbeats, mirroring her own concerns about his deteriorating well-being.
Rimmer and Lister found themselves uncertain about the right words to say, understanding the dire situation the crew members of MJN Air were facing. The recovery of their captain, Martin, remained shrouded in uncertainty, especially after Holly had conveyed the challenging reality they had entered aboard the mining vessel Red Dwarf. At times, silence and a reassuring presence were the most fitting responses, especially while Carolyn and Douglas focused on tending to Martin's mental well-being.
"Mr. Richardson, you're looking a bit worse for wear yourself," Kryten observes, his voice measured and gentle. "I would suggest that you could benefit from some rest, considering the stressors not only from adapting to this new reality aboard Red Dwarf but also Mr. Crieff's time spent in the medibay."
"Kryten," Douglas interjects, his voice carrying a hint of anger. "I can't simply abandon him like this."
"That's why you should listen to Kryten," Lister interjects, his voice firm. "Look at yourself. You've gone without a proper meal for days. Your mood is strained, and yet you continue neglecting your own basic needs while caring for Martin."
"You look utterly exhausted," Rimmer adds. "You're as pale as Casper the friendly ghost."
"I'm inclined to agree," Carolyn chimes in, nodding in support of their observations. Her tone then shifts, becoming both stern and gentle. "Douglas, now is not the time to push yourself beyond your limits. I simply cannot afford to lose both of my pilots."
"Martin..." Douglas breathes out, his voice strained.
"Mr. Richardson," Kryten interjects, hurrying to the first officer's side. He swiftly pulls out a chair, urging Douglas to sit before he loses his balance. "Please, allow reason to guide you. Depriving yourself of food and sleep won't contribute positively to Martin's recovery. Your incessant worry only adds to the challenge."
In the medibay, Douglas's exhaustion finally catches up with him, and his body succumbs to the overwhelming stress. The world around him fades into darkness, his consciousness slipping away.
When Douglas eventually stirs, he finds himself lying on a medical bed within the medibay. His groggy senses start to register the soft hum of machinery and the gentle, rhythmic beeping of monitors. The subdued lighting casts a calming ambiance, and the soft whirring of servos indicates that Kryten is nearby.
A sensation of coolness on his arm draws Douglas's attention. He follows the line of his gaze to see an IV needle neatly inserted into his arm, a clear bag of fluids hanging nearby. His heart skips a beat as he realizes the extent of his fatigue and stress-induced collapse.
"Ah, you're awake, Mr. Richardson," Kryten's voice sounds beside him, a blend of relief and professionalism. "Please remain calm. You had experienced a momentary blackout due to your exhaustion and stress levels."
Kryten's skilled hands adjust the controls of the IV drip, ensuring that Douglas receives the necessary hydration and nutrients. "I've initiated an IV treatment to help replenish your body's depleted resources," he explains, his tone reassuring.
"The medibay's environment has been optimized to promote relaxation and healing," Kryten continues, gesturing to the serene surroundings. "It's crucial for you to take this time to rest and recover."
"How's Martin doing?" Douglas asks, his voice a harsh whisper, laden with concern.
"He's doing quite well, sir," Kryten responds, his tone cheerful despite the gravity of the situation. "Since you've collapsed, Mr. Crieff's vitals have actually stabilized considerably, surpassing our initial expectations."
"Chin up," Rimmer says, his optimism ringing clear in his tone. "No war was ever won without rest."
Douglas, his voice carrying a hint of fatigue, asks with a stammer, "Wh-where's Carolyn... and Arthur..."
"Much-needed lunch, that's what," Lister responds after a brief pause. He places a steadying hand on Douglas's shoulder as he notices the first officer struggling to sit upright. "I promised Carolyn I'd hang back and make sure you settle down. I wouldn't get too noisy – your captain is still sleeping. Something both of you could use."
Lister's words seemed to have an overwhelming impact on Douglas's demeanor, particularly when he mentioned his captain, Martin. As a heavy silence enveloped the space, charged with tension, Douglas found his voice once more, this time barely above a whisper.
"You're right about that," he admitted, his tone carrying a mixture of resignation and self-awareness. "I shouldn't go raising my voice like that..." It was an unusual admission for the typically composed first officer, his voice revealing a blend of complex emotions, raw and unfiltered.
"Mr. Richardson, you need to relax," Kryten's voice carried a note of concern. "The sensitive medical equipment was able to detect the spike in your blood pressure."
"You need to settle down, mate," Lister's urgency was palpable in his tone. "It's time to get some much-needed rest and relaxation—something Carolyn probably never let the both of you have."
"I never thought I'd be spending it in the Chateau Medibay," Douglas mused, a soft chuckle escaping his pale, parted lips.
"Don't worry about Martin," Rimmer's voice carried a firm and authoritative tone. "Your boy is resting just as he should be. You need to focus on your needs for a change."
"I guess you could call him that," Douglas's voice slightly trembled. "He does remind me a lot of a boy, doesn't he?"
"You're taking great care of him," Rimmer affirmed, acknowledging the first officer's emotions in an attempt to steer his thoughts away from his worries. "He's recovering, and that's the important part."
Douglas's eyes shimmered with unshed tears at the mere thought of Martin's relapse. As he lay in his hospital bed, the first officer could only find solace in the fact that he was just a few beds over from Martin, who slept soundly.
"Mr. Richardson, I want to assure you that your emotions are entirely valid. It's natural to feel deeply concerned about Captain Martin's well-being. There is no shame in expressing your feelings, even in the presence of others. Crying is a way for humans to release their emotions and find a sense of relief. It's a sign of strength, not weakness, to show empathy and care for someone you hold dear. Please remember that you have our support, and your emotions are a testament to your genuine concern for Captain Martin's recovery."
"It's okay to cry," Lister's voice carried a touch of empathy. "Seeing your loved ones in pain isn't easy, and Martin's no exception. Neither is Arthur."
"Arthur..." Douglas's voice held a hint of curiosity. "What about Arthur?"
Notes:
This is a Red Dwarf Cabin Pressure crossover I've been dying to get on paper I've got a few things about the story down but this is the first chapter I ever wrote so far. MJN Air finds themselves in a new reality and the first thing that happens after they find out all of them are three million years into the future and Martin has a psychogenic blackout.

Serena Tsukino

English:
This is Serena (Westernized name) (also known as Usagi Tsukino) the beautiful blonde hair girl with both buns and twin tails who is lazy and clumsy schoolgirl living in Tokyo, Japan, Serena struggles with her position as Sailor Moon, leader of Sailor Scouts and also the civilian identity of the Sailor Guardian of Love and Justice from the 90’s Anime Sailor Moon.
I honestly couldn’t watch Every Episode in it’s Original Language is Japanese because of thinking the voice of Hynden Walch, Doug Lawrence, Carolyn Lawrence and Kevin Michael Richardson. So, I wanted to tune a Language dub because I wasn’t able to speak Japanese otherwise, I will tune on the Latin American Spanish dub. I saw 49 episodes on my laptop it was really awesome and I watch the episode when Serena discovers that she is actually Sailor Moon, a Pretty Guardian who fights for love and for justice. She uses her powers to try and rescue her friend Molly Baker from a demon sent out by Jadeite and the episode is awesome.
