Genres: Action
I tend to think of action movies as exuberant morality plays in which good triumphs over evil.

The Action Packed Holiday Gift you need: Carry On Review
Christmas movies are usually fun and light-hearted to keep your spirits up. Some movies aim to go against the norm and use the Christmas season to leap into another genre. Carry On is that kind of movie. It is definitely not your traditional feel-good kind of Christmas story.
Ethan Kopek is a low level TSA agent who is stuck working Christmas Eve. Like many he is dreading the influx of passengers this day brings. Unbeknownst to Ethan, his day is about to get much worse when a mysterious passenger threatens everyone he loves if Ethan does not check a bag through.
What happens after this is a good story even with more tension. Jason Bateman is the bread and butter here playing the Mystery Criminal. Taron Egerton plays the straight-laced Ethan, and the two of them together create a formidable story that carries through to the finale.
Tumblr media
Movies of this nature rely solely on the plot, escalating and then creating a natural tension. You feel that for Ethan here as he just found out his girlfriend Nora is pregnant. That alone gives you enough context as to why Ethan is willing to enterain what this this mystery man is willing to tell him. That works as a plot device and ultimately affords Egerton some emotional range. Bateman, who is usually a comedy actor, comes through clutch here as well. His deadpan do as I say performance really sells how dangerous a man he is. One very cool aspect of the story is that we never learn more than what we need to know. He wants this bag on the plane, and that is the extent of what we learn about him. Bateman plays it so well, and hopefully, this will give him the ability to field more drama in the future.
Tumblr media
It truly had me hooked and invested. The supporting characters felt like real people as well. It was such a great action thriller that truly left the final moments up in the air. Perhaps TSA agent Ethan Kopek was the new action here we needed this holiday season. It has been many years since Die Hard ended the debate on what truly makes a holiday movie or not. By that argument, this is a new holiday movie that opts for more action than comedy and more thrills than holiday cheer.
Netflix seems to have done it again in terms of providing an engaging thrill ride, all while snuggled under the blankets with eggnog and cookies. That's all you can really ask for. The ability to quietly immerse yourself in a film that keeps you guessing and fulfilled. This is the kind of film you can throw on during a family gathering if everyone has a different sense of humor and can't settle. Thanks, Netflix, for offering true variety even for those looking for a movie set during the holidays but one that also breaks tradition.
