I'm watching the movie 'Oldboy' and I know the main character has been imprisoned for a while but come on dude that girl is young enough to be your daughter.

oldboy is odd because it seems like a lot of the themes are about these men destroying themselves for revenge etc but the root of it is this like. possessiveness of women/women’s virtue as some kind of communal property right. like that’s the anxiety. but the film itself is not doing much to grant agency or independent life to these women either

like what's confusing to me is that even for 80s standards, oldboy is more i guess civilized abt its homophobia (like not explicitly offensive statements moreso on the They're morally ambiguous / one being attracted to You, Solidly Heterosexual Person, would somehow destabilize their heterosexuality way rather than a vitriolic/ aggresively stereotypical impression way), but, im serious, it´s brought up SO many times at one point i have to give up to ask once if that´s something i have to take seriously into consideration in the narrative.
it unironically gets me dry heaving that a sizeable part of psychological conflict inside oldboy's protagonist's mind is the idea that dojima might be gay and for him. like he starts SWEATING. physically distressed. shoe gazing like someone asked him what the meaning of life is.

You don't have to hand it to the Oldboy villain but this is a fire line

Song Kang-ho (who was filming Bong Joon-ho’s memories of murder nearby) drops in on Choi Min-sik, who was on another set filming Oldboy, 2003.
(I fucking love both of these movies, this picture makes me so happy 😭)

decision to leave by park chanwook is such an insane film like what if. what if you loved someone so much that you would doom yourself over and over and over again at every turn of your life just to continue haunting them, just to become their deepest guilt and failure and infatuation and defeat, just to ultimately kill yourself and become an unforgettable mystery instead because memory is a monster and destruction is the gentlest and also the only form of love you both know. what would happen if the mountain loved the sea and tried to become the sea because of its love? it would collapse. maybe to love someone is to simply watch them be happy in the mundane. maybe to love is to watch them scour the ebbing and surging tides for a trace of you after you're long gone. maybe to love someone is to teach them to fall asleep to the sound of your breathing and then leave forever while they remain.
