You kept thinking about the kiss.

Maybe overthinking it?

You kept thinking about how soft and gentle it was. How you expect it to be rough and dominating but instead, it was total opposite, which kind of throws you through a loop.

He’s a killer, but does he have a soft spot for me? Why would he do that, to prove a point maybe?

“Y/n.” Cody reaches over and lays his hand on yours, “You didn’t take some of your pain meds before you came did you?”

Oh right, we’re at dinner, “No. no. I didn’t sleep well last night and then I tried taking a nap earlier after we got back from the station and that..” you shake your head, “Sorry. I’ve been itching to get back to work and-“

“Well what do you want to know?” Cody leans back, “I’m pretty well caught up on it, so maybe I can help fill you in on what you think you don’t know.”

You smile, “Yes. Work talk would be great right n-“

Your attention is taken away from Cody, and placed onto Sam who is sitting at the bar.

“What is it?” Cody asks, slowly turning his head to look over. Sam turns around right as Cody looks at him, and with a saving grace, Ben and Nat walk in, giving you the perfect excuse, “Sorry. It’s my brother and Nat.”

“Ben and Nat? I was wondering when they were going to reconnect.”

“You knew?!” You look at Cody, laughing slightly, “Like for certain you knew?”

He shrugs, “I mean, you can read it off of them from a mile away.”

“That’s what I said! Well, something like that.” You laugh, glancing back over towards Sam. He raises his glass to you, giving you a wink before standing up to move somewhere else.

If he’s here, then that means one of the others is here, too.

And you’d be correct.

He meets Johnnie down at the other end, but you turn your attention back to Cody, “So.. work. Sorry.”

He shakes his head, giving you a smile, “You’re good, sweetheart. Ask away.”

“Have the families of the men who are a part of that plan to take down the hospital moved into P.C yet?”

You look at Cody as he shakes his head, almost looking disappointed, “No. Since the murders have been happening in the east side of town, they-“

“They’re waiting until one of them finally loses a husband. A father. A grandfather?” You roll your eyes, “Please. They have all the -“

“Y/n. I’ve been trying. Ever since you said something to me about it in the hospital. A lot of the men, who I have called myself, laughed and said let them come. They think they can take down these assholes themselves. No matter how much we push or try, it’s really on them.”

“That’s actually..” you stop, taking in a deep breath, “I’ll talk to the chief myself about that. I’ll go door to door myself if I have to.” You take a long sip from your glass, “Do you think there’s more to Ben getting shot?”

Cody takes a sip of his drink and tilts his head, “I’m going to need you to elaborate a little bit more. I’m not sure I’m following.”

“Do you think that there was just one shooter? Was this a part of the.. Killionaires?”

Cody is quiet for a moment before leaning in, “Y/n. If he was a target for those assholes..” He sighs, “I hate to say this, but I think you’d be a target, too.”

“Are you saying you think the accident was from them?” You take a sip of your wine and raise your brows as he doesn’t answer, “You do.”

“I didn’t say that.” Cody shakes his head, “What..” He sighs, “What I’m saying is, I don’t know what or who caused our accident, and if you think there’s something more about Ben shooting then take it up with the chief.”

You swallow, clenching your jaw, “Okay. Maybe work talk was a bad topic of-“

“No, no. I just.. I care about you a lot, and even thinking that you could be a potential target.. it just pisses me off. I didn’t mean-“

“Fancy seeing you two here.” Ben says as he walks up.

You smirk, “Yeah, I could say the same thing about you.” You glance to Nat, “Could have told me.”

She laughs slightly, “Yeah, yeah. I just.. wasn’t sure where we stood after.. everything, you know?”

You nod, “I understand.”

“Would you like to join us?” Cody offers and luckily, they decline, making their way over to their own table.

Cody looks from them to you, “Cute couple, huh?”

“Oh yeah. Totally.” You smile and down your wine, “Where’s the waiter? I need-“

“More wine?”

Your heart falls into your stomach at your eyes meet Colby’s, “Uh. Yes, yes please.” You remind yourself over and over again to stay calm, cool, and most importantly, collected.

“And for you sir?” Colby looks at Cody and Cody shakes his head, “Whiskey, please.”

“Coming right up.” Colby turns, giving you a wink before going to fetch your drinks. You take a deep breath, “Didn’t we have a different waiter before?”

“I don’t know, I wasn’t really paying attention.” Cody laughs, “You look really pretty tonight.”

“Thank you.” You smile, looking down, “You clean up really well, yourself.”

You couldn’t lie, you felt weird being here with Cody after you run in with Jake this afternoon. You swore you could still feel his lips on yours, which only made you sink deeper into the hole of betrayal.

“I’m going to run to the restroom quick, if he comes back to take our order when I’m not here just get me what you get.” You give him a smile and turn, your smile disappearing as you walk away.

You walk around the bar, stopping when you see Sam sitting at the end. He looks over at you and you tilt your head, mouthing, “What are you doing here?”

He chuckles, mouthing back, “Keeping an eye on you.” He raises his finger off the glass, pointing at you and you roll your eyes, pushing the bathroom door open.

You walk in, hands gripping the counter as you feel like you’re about to pass out, “Shit. Okay.”

“You alright there, honey?” An older woman asks as she walks up next to you, “You look a little pale, and you’re sweating.”

“I think I drank too much.” You laugh slightly, “Wine doesn’t agree with me sometimes. I don’t know why I drink it.” You reach out to take the paper towel she ripped off for you, “Thank you.”

“I had that same problem, but with tequila. Oh boy was that rough.” She laughs, “Water will help, and a cool towel, and if you need to puke, don’t fight it.”

You nod, “Thank you.”

She washes her hands and exits the room, leaving you alone to calm down.

You make your way back out, bumping into someone as you round the corner, “Oh, sorry.” You look up, seeing Colby as he turns with the tray of glasses, “Not a problem, sweetheart.”

He smirks at you, “After you.”

“Mhm.” You huff as you walk around him, smiling at Cody as he comes into view, “There was a lady in there who told me her life story about how tequila is a no go for her.”

“People are so comfortable nowadays.” He laughs, motioning to Colby, who he doesn’t know is Colby, “Ah, yes. Thank you.”

“Of course. Are we ready to order?”

You and Cody order, spending the rest of the night, not talking about work, mainly so you don’t spew all over the table.

It was a good evening. You became slightly tipsy and giggly, but you could still hold your tongue and not say anything too specific.

Once you arrive home, you hoped Cody would just drop you off and leave, but the alcohol in your system had other plans as soon as he kissed you goodnight.

He walks you back through your door, lips still on yours as he kicks it closed. His hands hold you close to him as he guides you over to the couch.

He sits down and you instantly straddle him, grinding down as his lips trail down your neck. You let out a small moan as his teeth sink into your neck, sucking and nipping at the skin between them.

“I’ve missed you.” He whispers against your chest, “You have no idea.” His hands slide up to pull the straps of your dress off your shoulders, kissing the skin that was hidden beneath them, “You are so beautiful.”

You close your eyes, whimpering out as he moves your hips, grinding his bulge up against you.

As you open your eyes, Jake’s figure appears from within the hall and you gasp, scrambling to stand up as you push yourself away from Cody, “Um. I’m sorry. I’m not..”

“It’s okay. It’s okay. We don’t-“

“No, I just.. I don’t think doing this while I-“ you take a deep breath, “I can’t have this and focus on the current case.”

“It’s fine. Okay? I get it.” Cody stands up, “You don’t ever have to explain yourself, okay? I trust your judgment.”

“Thank you.” You sigh, “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have drank with the pain meds probably still in my system anyway.”

“I should have thought about that, I’m sorry.” Cody kisses your head, “Get some rest. Text me in the morning, okay?”

You nod, “Okay. Thank you.”

You walk him over to the door and give him a smile as he turns around to wave. You lift your fingers off the door, making sure he gets to his car before you close the door.

“Well that was quite a show.” Jake breaks the silence, “You didn’t have to stop on my account.”

“I didn’t find anything else out. If that’s what you’re here for.” You press your back against the door, “Sorry.”

“What are you sorry for, love?” Jake walks up, copying your position, “You tried, right?”

You nod, “He thinks that if Ben was a target for you guys, I would be one too.. and-“

Jake clicks his tongue, “So, you think I shot Ben?”

You shake your head, “Didn’t say that, but I would like to know who did.”

“The guy in prison, was the one who shot your brother, but the person behind it.. he’s..” Jake stops talking and you turn, pushing his shoulders into the door, “Just fucking tell me, Jake.”

“You’re cute when you’re mad.” Jake smirks and you push his shoulders harder, “I swear to god. I gave you what you wanted. You have the names. What more do you want?”

“I need you to stop them from placing them into protective custody.” Jake says calmly, “Your work is far from done, babe.“

“They’re not going.” You mumble as you step back, “According to Cody, a lot of them just laughed and hung up, said something about let them come or whatever.”

Jake laughs, “Oh that’s hilarious. They really think they can take us on?” He shakes his head, “That’s.. I needed a laugh. Oh fuck, is that funny or what.”

You stare at him, unsure of what to say.

“Make sure it stays that way, will ya?” Jake walks around you and without even thinking, you grab his arm, pulling him to you, “What more do you want from me?”

“I think you’re asking that for yourself.” Jake whispers, “What are you doing?” His eyes follow as your hand slides up his chest, “Y/n.”

“Do you want this to happen or not?” You look up at him and Jake takes a deep breath, “I would love for this to happen, but you’ve been drinking, and I do have respect for you.”

“I’m fine.”

“I don’t think you are, baby.” Jake steps back, cupping your cheeks with his hands, “You’ll hate yourself even more in the morning if we go through with this. I’m saying no because you don’t need a distraction right now. You need to sleep.”

You stay silent, pushing yourself away from him before walking back to your room and slamming the door.

You sit on the bed, staring at the floor as your mind races, asking yourself what the hell you’re doing.

Your bedroom door opens and Jake steps in, “Ben is home.”

“You better go. I don’t know how I’d explain you being here after he saw me at dinner with Cody.” You stand up, reaching behind you to unzip your dress.

You let out a frustrated sigh as you can’t grasp the small zipper.

“Here.” Jake whispers as he reaches to spin you around, “I got you.”

He drags the zipper down your back, his head tilting as your bare back is exposed to him. He licks his lips, leaning in to whisper in your ear, “We’ll have our moment, just not like this.”

He steps back, freezing as footsteps and shuffling fill the hall. You can hear him and Nat laughing as they file into the room Ben is staying in.

“Gonna be a long night, yeah?” Jake laughs slightly and you scoff, “uh huh.”

Jake reaches back, locking the door, “I can stay for a while?”

“Do you not trust me?” You walk over to your dresser, pulling out a shirt and a pair of shorts. Jake watches as you drop the dress, revealing your figure to him and he clears his throat quietly, “We’ve been over this, y/n.”

You change into your clothes, “So your minions, following me to dinner was what, to get ahead of me?”

Jake nods, “Pretty much. But I also want you safe.”

“No, you need me safe. You’re scared I’m going to turn on you.”

“Are you scared I’m going to turn on you?”

You stay silent asJake walks over to you, “You may not have done the killing, but there’s blood on your hands, too, sweetheart,”

Your brain was clouded, you couldn’t sort through anything, no thoughts were clear, “Fuck. Fuck.” You lay your hands over your face but Jake pulls them away, “Listen to me. As long as you do as I ask, you’re safe. Why do you think I flipped out on Johnnie for hitting your side of the car?”

“Why did you even let someone who doesn’t know how to drive, drive in the first goddamn place?” You throw your hands up and let them slap your thighs.

“Quiet down.” Jake whispers, fingers brushing your jaw, “and calm down.”

“D-“

“Calm. Down.”

You take a deep breath, the sound of laughter and the bed hitting the wall sounds and you can’t help but laugh, “Oh my god. I can’t.. I can’t believe this is my life.”

Tears form in your eyes, but you continue to laugh, “Oh my god.”

“Are you good?” Jake asks and you look at him, “Oh yeah. I’m great. I might be losing it, but I’m gre-“

Jake cuts you off with a kiss to your lips, which he allows you to deep. His hands squeeze your face as he pulls back, “No, I told myself-“

“I don’t care what you told yourself.” You breathe out, “Just don’t think about it.” You pull him back in for a kiss and walk him backwards, pushing him down onto the bed before you crawl up to straddle him.

“Not like I can tell anyone about this anyway.” You smirk down at him and his hands move up to grip your hips, his fingers digging into your skin as you grind down on him.

“I probably would have lost it if i seen him fucking you.”

“I could tell by the look on your face, Jake.” You lean down, lips connecting to his.

He rolls over, his hips between your knees as his lips find your neck, “We shouldn’t be doing this.” You groan quietly at his words, “Why?”

“Like you said, baby.” He lifts his head, tilting it as he flicks his brows up, “Might fall in love.”

You smirk, “That such a bad thing?”

He nods with a quiet laugh, “I mean, yes and no.”

“Do you not want to?” You sit up onto your elbows, “I’m giving you full opportunity here.”

Jake sits up, “I know. I know.”

You sigh, “It’s fine. You can go now.” You move up the bed, getting under the blankets, “I’m sure I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“I’m going to be gone a few days. I have names that need crossed off.” Jake says as he stands up and you nod, keeping your stare away from him.

“Y/n.” He asks lowly, “Are you o-“

“I’m fine.” You cut him off, pulling the blankets up to your chin, “Just fucking fine.”

Jake nods and lets out a quiet sigh, “I’ll catch up with you in a few days.”

You stay still until you know he’s gone. A part of you is so sad that he left, but the other part or you can only wonder one thing.

If you could change (or rather fix) the background and/or paternity of any five characters, who would they be?

Sam McCall - While I liked early Julexis, what the writers did to them pissed me off and turned me off of the couple. Sam understandably kicked Julian out of her life, but has nothing to do with the rest of her Jerome relatives? I liked her scenes with Ava when she was sick with toxoplasmosis. She and Kiki interacted a lot and got along well when Sam dated Kiki’s dad Silas, but they don’t acknowledge the fact that they are cousins. She doesn’t interact with Lucas or even babysit her baby brother Leo. What was the purpose of making Julian Sam’s dad?

Franco - I hate this character for many reasons and the only time I liked him (as played by Roger Howarth) was when he and Nina were together pre-baby issue. James Franco’s Franco was a fun psycho villain. I hate all of his paternity rewrites. First, he was Betsy Frank’s son. Nope, he is Jason’s fraternal twin via Alan and Susan Moore. Wrong, he is Heather Webber’s son by Scott, despite not looking like either one. I like Roger Howarth, but he is miscast in this role. I would rather Franco be Betsy Frank’s with the probably abusive creep Jim Harvey (who he resembles) rather than tarnish the Baldwins (Scott, Karen, Serena, Gail and Lee), even by association.

Nelle - There is so much wrong with this character. If they were going to connect her to Carly, she should have been a Spencer relative, capitalizing on the fact that she previously played a younger version of Luke and Bobbie’s sister Pat, and not a Benson. While in her early days, I liked that she was like a young Carly set on revenge. They could have made her Carly’s daughter somehow, either from pre-Port Charles days in Florida (possibly from sleeping with Reese’s dad) or a previously unknown twin of Michael’s. That way we wouldn’t have had to suffer through the train wreck that was Melle. Or if they wanted her to be an original character, why not utilize the chemistry she had with Nina and reveal that she was Nina and Silas’ baby that was supposedly miscarried after what Madeline did?

Avery - Like many of you, I wish Avery was Morgan’s daughter. It wouldn’t change much of her story. Carly would definitely try and rig the paternity test. Maybe we wouldn’t have suffered through more MorKiki and Ava wouldn’t have been indirectly responsible for Morgan’s death.

Griffin - I would make him Anna’s son with Duke, the child she supposedly miscarried when Olivia Jerome pushed her in the elevator. In one of Olivia’s last scenes, she made an ominous remark about Griffin’s mother. It would be amazing if she knew that Griffin was Anna’s and kept that secret out of revenge against the woman who “stole” Duke from her. Plus, he is basically Anna’s son already with how protective and caring she is for him because he is Duke’s son. Also, Robin and Emma already see him as a brother/uncle-like figure. If Josh Madden, Erica Kane’s famous abortion, could be transplanted into her doctor’s wife as an embryo, why not the same treatment (in a good way) for Anna and Griffin?

****BONUS**** If we are stuck with Anna having a child with Faison, I would rather it not be the obvious path - Valentin lied about it being a girl and it will be Henrik/Peter August, who we know is Faison’s son and cohorts with Valentin. I don’t mind Peter being Faison’s son and in league with Valentin, because we all knew the boy was shady af. However, I would prefer if Anna did have another daughter and it was revealed to be Dr. Kim Nero. She looks a lot like Anna. It would give Tamara more story to work with and more avenues to take the character of Kim in. Kim and Oscar would have more family (Henrik/Peter, Britt, Maxie’s baby, Robin, Emma, baby Noah, Alex Devane Marick, Gabriel Devane, Aidan Devane).

What five storylines would you rewrite? And how?

Sam’s paternity/Port Charles re-visited - As I previously mentioned, I would change Sam’s paternity since she doesn’t utilize her Jerome heritage. I would have made her Ryan Chamberlain’s daughter. Ryan is Kevin’s dead psycho twin brother. Ryan would still fit in with Alexis’ bad boy dating profile and it would make since that she would be a dead ringer for Livvie Locke. I also would have kept Kevin as Livvie’s father since it was a disservice to Port Charles and its fans to rewrite such a story. I would have kept the nods to Port Charles but they could have left out the supernatural elements, which were only brought into the later seasons of the show. Port Charles did start out as a show about young doctors (including Scott’s daughter Karen Wexler) and nurses working at General Hospital, when the main soap went to more mob-related stories. There were a lot of crossovers to begin with. Also, there would be mention of Scott and Lucy’s adopted daughter Christina.

Nikolas’ storylines 2014-2016. I’m not sure how I would write it, but Nikolas wouldn’t take over ELQ, be involved involved in “Jake Doe”/Drew/Jason drama, try to blackmail or kill Hayden, fake his death, or be killed by Valentin for Cassadine holdings. I don’t mind Nik getting some dark Cassadine on, but don’t destroy his character like these years did.

Port Charles Mayoral Campaign of 2018. I would have kept Laura as the anti-Charles Street development candidate (screw you, Frank!). Olivia would have been in-character and struggling between supporting her husband Ned and fighting for the down-to-earth people living on Charles Street who are a lot like her Bensonhurst neighbors. Laura would win, despite the dirty tricks pulled by Jim Harvey. Ned would run a clean campaign. Julian would run his bar and have little to do with the story. Alexis would assist with Laura’s campaign, but otherwise stay out of politics and Charlie’s Pub.

There would be no Friz relationship. Elizabeth would have dated Griffin instead (sorry, Grava).

Sonny wouldn’t have killed AJ. While I enjoyed the distance between Michael and Sonny (as well as Carly) because of Sonny’s actions, it didn’t last long enough. Sonny escaped the consequences yet again. Also, there would be no Ava/Sonny sex on AJ’s grave, which would mean that Avery would have to be Morgan’s. Michael would still have good relationships with all of his parents. We would get to see AJ’s reactions to “Jake Doe” being “Jason” before finally revealed to be Jason’s twin Drew, as well as the real Jason being alive. I would need all of Alan’s sons to reconcile their feelings toward each other. AJ would be an attentive uncle to Jake, Danny, and Scout.

Three most annoying retcons in General Hospital history?

Franco’s crimes are a result of a brain tumor. Such bullshit.

Anna willingly sleeping with Faison when she is a WSB trainee to get info and having his child, who is probably Henrik/Peter. I may not have been alive when Robert, Anna, and Robin first came on in the 80s, but many fans have said that a flashback showed that Anna was a virgin when she first slept with Robert. Writers, stop screwing with GH history.

Ignoring Sam’s relationships with Silas and Patrick in favor building up her relationship with Drew. While I did like Siam, I did feel they were a rebound. But Samtrick was a real relationship and it was going very well until Carly outed “Jake Doe” as “Jason”. Sam was still her investigative, risk-taking self and a mom back then, compared to whoever she is now. Yes, I feel like she would have went back to Jason and Patrick to Robin, in the end.

You stare at your hands, rubbing your thumb over the pads of your other fingers. Jake’s words constantly replaying in your head.

It’s been two days since you’ve seen Jake, he did say he’d be gone for a few, but you never how many a few is with him.

“Good morning.” Ben sets a coffee down on the desk, “You left early this morning.”

“Yeah, I wanted to get a jump on the day.” You bring the cup to your lips, “When do you go back?” You look up at Ben as he sits down across from you.

He shrugs, “I think I’m going to see about staying.”

“Do you think that’s the right idea?”

He furrows his brows, “Why wouldn’t it be? Do you not want me home?”

“No I do, I just-“ you sigh, “I just think there’s more to your shooting than anyone thinks, Ben.”

He leans in, “What are you saying?”

You stammer over your words and he cuts you off, “You think they did this to me? Y/n, my shooter is in prison.”

“I’m just saying that we can’t be.. too careful. Not with something like this.” You push the folder over towards him, “They struck again. And again. They’re ahead of us.”

“What the hell.” He stretches over the desk, pressing his fingers into the folder and drags it over to him, “These are people-“

You cut him off, “That Cody called about protective custody.”

“One of the wives this time?” Ben looks up at you, shaking his head, “We need to get more patrols in the area. This is..” he sighs, “Fuck.” He slams his hand down on the folder and you tilt your head, “Why don’t we go talk to some of the people that are on the list to be taken into protective custody?��

“Think the chief will sign off on that?” Ben raises his brows and you shrug, “Worth a shot, right.”

“You have zero faith in me.” You laugh as you get into the cruiser. Ben chuckles, “I just didn’t think you were up for putting yourself on the line just yet.”

“I’ve been dying to get back to work. Plus, if I’m here then I can’t hear you and-“

“Okay, okay. Okay. I get what you’re saying.” Ben laughs, “Sorry about that.”

You shrug, “I just turn my tv up.” You laugh, letting out a sigh as you watch out the window, “Where to first?”

“Um, I belive it’s the home of Robert and Emilie Kearson.” Ben checks the paper and nods, “Yeah. Then I think, right next door if I’m not mistaken is Charlie and Heather Drivot.”

“Did you want to stay together on this, or did you want to take one and I take the other?” You look over at him and he shrugs, “I’d prefer if we stick together.”

“Hello, Mrs Kearson?” You smile at the woman standing in the opening of the door, “I’m agent y/n y/l/n and this is officer y/l/n.”

“Is this about the-“

“Yes.” Ben cuts them off, “It’s about what happening to other men, and now women, like you and your husband.”

You glance at Ben and take a breath, “May we come in and just give you the rundown of what we want to do to keep you and your family safe?”

“Robert won’t-“ the woman shakes her head, “He won’t. He thinks he’ll make it out of this.”

“I don’t want to scare you any further, but this is your best chance at-“

You cut Ben off, “Here’s my card, Mrs. Kearson. Please, if you change your mind or have any questions, please call.”

“Is your husband home?” Ben asks and the woman takes your card, “No. He’s next door with Charlie.”

“Thank you.” You nod, subtly pulling Ben with you, “Why would you-“

Gunshots catch your attention and you and Ben run to the house next door, “Robert Kearson! Charlie Drivot!” You yell as you slowly open the door, “Ben, call for backup.”

“Already done.”

You nod, the sound of painful screams fill the house and you huff, “I’m going on.”

“Y/n, no!” Ben grabs your arm and you rip it away, “They need help.”

“You don’t know if they’re still in there or not! You can’t fucking go in there.” Ben yells and a woman, covered in blood, opens the door fully.

She’s panting, sobbing, completely losing it.

“What happened?” You wrap your arm around her shoulder and she falls into you. You look at Ben, “We need EMS, now!”

You try to console the woman, but nothing is calming her down.

You peer into the house from the doorway and your breath is hitched in your throat as you see Jake standing at the top of the steps, giving you a smirk before he walks back the hall.

Not even a minute later, another gun shot was heard and everything fell completely silent.

The slowly woman turns back around, her body jolting with her silent sobs.

“Ma’am. Ma’am.” You try to pull the woman back but she breaks from your grasp, rushing into the house and upstairs to where you saw Jake.

Her blood curdling scream fills the house and a chill goes down your spine, “Go around back.. I got this covered.”

You heard sirens in the distance and the only thing you could think was, run Jake, run!

The squad cars come to a screeching stop, guns drawn as they run towards the house.

“Tell me what’s happening, y/l/n.” One of the officers says and you freeze.

“C’mon, y/n. What happened.”

“Ben and I went next door, talked to Mrs. Kearson. Heard screaming. Ran over here. The woman, Heather, she went back in, but I-I don’t know. I sent Ben around back.” You switch your gun to your other hand and wipe your palm on your jeans, “I didn’t see anything. Just.. heard the shot.”

“Are you okay?”

You nod, “Yeah, yeah. I’m good.”

He nods and looks around, “Going in.”

You rush in with the other officers and agents. You right up the steps and you come to a hard stop when you see the room, “Guys.” You turn your head slightly, keeping your eyes on the wall, “Guys!”

“What? What is-“ the officer stops, “What the fuck.”

In what you assume is blood, Killionaires is written across the wall.

Your eyes move to the woman laying next to the man, dead.

“Oh, Heather.” You look up, taking a shaky breath, “Fuck. I could have-“

“No, don’t do tha-“

“I could have stopped her. I could have saved her.” You bend down, head between your forearms, “Fuck!”

“Hey is every- what the hell.” Ben takes a second before looking down at you, “Hey, hey. What’s going on?”

“She’s kicking her own ass for Heather.”

“Don’t do that, y/n.” Ben drops down, his hand rubbing your back for comfort, “You tried, okay. I saw. She made up her mind.”

“This isn’t your fault y/n.” The officer says, “C’mon. Let’s get you out of here.”

They pull you to your feet and you push them away, walking down and out of the house as you wipe away your tears.

You can normally handle death. You’ve never broken down about a case, maybe two times in your career but they were, special cases.

“Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.” You walk over to the one car, slamming your hand down on the hood. You were strung out.

Burnt out from playing two games at once.

“Y/n?” The chief walks up, “What’s going on?”

“No matter..” you sniffle, “What I do..” you laugh, shaking your head as you take a deep breath, “I can’t keep anyone safe.”

“You tried your best, y/n. Some people.. just can’t be saved.”

You wanted to so badly spill everything. Stick your hands out and let them cuff you, but you just couldn’t.

Not yet.

“We were right there.” You motion to the house next door, “Right here. Damn it.”

“That’s the job. Always being one step behind the perps.” The chief reaches out and rubs your shoulder, “Until you’re not. That’s what motivates me.”

“How do we get a head of them?” You sniffle, “I just-“

“I’m putting out a mandatory order for protective custody. More units patrolling. I’ll put an officer at each door if I have to.” The chief sighs, “Well get these assholes, y/n. I promise.”

You nod, “Do you need me to write a report?”

He nods, “I’ll need everything you saw, heard, felt. You know the drill.”

You nod, “Am I clear to go back to the station?”

“Oh my god, y/n. What happened?” Cody runs up, “Are you hurt?” His hands wipe over the blood on your clothes and you shake your head, “Not mine.”

He pulls you in, kissing the top of your head, and you just sob.

You hated Jake, but at the same time, a sick part of you missed him.

That was a deadly combination.

You pull yourself together and lean away, “Can you take me to the station?”

Cody nods, “Of course. Come on.”

You make your way to his car and the whole ride there you refused to talk. You were afraid you’d say the wrong thing.

He assured you multiple times that nothing was your fault, but in reality, it was.

You get out, not waiting for him and walk into the station. You brushes people off, saying it wasn’t your blood, something happened.

You walk into the one conference room and close the door.

As you’re writing your report, images of Jake just smirking at you flash and you squeeze your eyes shut. Hoping and praying that he can just let his grip on you go, even if it’s just a little bit.

But you didn’t see that happening. Not until one of you is dead.

As you and Ben pull up to your house, you look over at him, “You don’t have to babysit me your whole life.”

“Who said I was doing that?” He parks the car and leans back, “I’m just looking out for my sister.”

You nod and Ben sighs, “Are you trying to tell me that you want to be left alone for tonight?” He chuckles, “I’m not going to be bad at you for needing space, not after..” he shakes his head and looks back at you, “I’ll stay at Nat’s place tonight. No big deal.”

You nod, “Thanks for being so understanding.”

He shrugs, giving you a smile before getting out of the car, “I’ll just get a bag quick and then I’ll go.”

You nod, walking up to your door, “No rush. I’m going to get a shower.” You walk into the bathroom and stand at the mirror.

You stare in the mirror, unable to recognize what you’re becoming.

Tears well up in your eyes and you shake your head, walking over to turn the shower on. The room fills with steam as the water grows hotter, and you discard your clothes before getting in.

You rest your shoulder and head against the wall as the water washes over you.

This is when you wished the shower would, quite literally, wash the day away. You wanted to forget. Not have the image of walking into the room in your memory.

Hearing the screams. The gunshots. Everything.

After washing up and turning the water off, a familiar voice causes you to freeze.

“How was your day, sweetheart?”

You close your eyes, taking a deep breath before you pull the curtain back slightly and reach out for your towel, ignoring Jake.

“It’s like that now?” He scoffs, “I didn’t mean to-“

“Is my brother gone?” You ask as you wrap the towel around your body before moving the curtain.

“Would I be here if he was?” Jake tilts his head, “Stupid question, I don’t need a stupid answer.”

You roll your eyes, reaching for the door knob but Jake’s hand grabs your wrist, “I’m sorry.” You continue to ignore him, eyes staying glued to the knob.

“Y/n.” He reaches up to grab your chin and you wince at his touch, “Don’t.”

“A few days ago you were practically begging me to touch you. What happened?” Jake drops his hand to his thigh and you snap your head towards him, “What happened?” You scoff, “What happened is today. What you did. To me, today.”

“I didn’t do anything.” He rests his head back against the mirror, “I didn’t know you were going to go door to door, baby. You were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

“Or, should I say.. right time for you and your little cop buddies.” He smirks at his own words, his eyes moving down to look at you.

“Just..” you sigh, “Just leave me alone.”

You open the door and Jake follows you to your room, “You know I can’t do that, baby.”

“Stop. Calling. Me. That.” You walk over to your dresser, pulling out clean clothes, “And get out or at least turn around so I can change.”

He chuckles and shakes his head as he turns around, “What are the next steps?”

You ignore him until you dress, “With what?”

“You know what.” He turns back around and leans against the wall.

You walk past him, out to your kitchen and he follows, “C’mon. Don’t ignore me. Shit drives me crazy.”

You stand at the counter, hands laying on the edge and you think for a moment.

Jake walks up behind you and presses his chest to your back, “Tell me what the next move is, baby. I’ll leave after that.”

His hands slowly find their way to your hips and you sigh, “I’m pulling out of the investigation.”

His hands grip your hips and he spins you around, “What.” His tone is harsh, “Y/n. You do realize there is a shit ton of shit on the line, right? Like you do understand that, don’t you?”

Your voice is barely audible, breaking as you try not to cry, “I can’t do this anymore.”

Jake forces your chin up with his fingers, “Listen to me, and listen fucking good.” He stares into your eyes and you can’t help but stare back, mostly out of fear.

“You pull out of this investigation. I’ll kill your brother myself. I’ll make sure it’s slow and painful. Am I clear?”

Your heart was racing, “Don’t. Don’t bring my brother into this.”

Jake chuckles, “You already did.” He lets go of your chin and sighs, “See ya around, baby. Probably tomorrow. Who knows.”
