During an owl shift detective session with Super Snooper and Blabbermouse
[Mise en scene: In the mobile base of operations, shall we say, for the Super Snooper Detective Agency. A muggy summer's evening, requiring the air conditioning to be on full tilt as if extra-strong coffee wasn't enough of a requisite stimulant. At any rate, a highly-sensitive audio recorder is working full tilt on a highly sensitive matter the team are working on.] BLABBERMOUSE, trying not to get too ahead of himself: Geez, Snoop, doesn't it sound like we have a catfight in hiatus? SUPER SNOOPER, between sips of coffee: "Catfight in hiatus," you says, Blab? May I just say that what we are dealing with is a most disreputable sort of venue bound to attract in particular the sexually frustrated who otherwise preaches "God and Country" as if it were South Africa, like, in the zenith of that apartheid thingy! [At any rate, the recorder catches what could best be described as the throes of a lovemaking session of the lowest order, such as would be common to Houses of Ill Repute for the most part, barely underway. With that, I will leave things unto your Hanna-Barberian imaginations.]

Before she leaves, I ask the Batgirl how she does it—keeps herself from falling to the influence of the reality engine. It is my way of remembering him...a single-minded pursuit of vengeance, she answers. Did you get it from him?, I ask. I had it before him, she says. -Detective Comics #1082

The house of Nightingale & Constantine ( P. 2 )
> previous part , > next part
.・゜-: ✧ :-
"Okay, who the heck is that?"
Danny storms out of the elevator, positively pissed at the appearance of another old house in his territory.
"Frederich Isak Showenhower, aka Freakshow, current heir of a long line of thiefs." John lets out a suffering groan, not even daring to take out a cigarette under Alfred's sharp gaze.
"Shoot, freakshow?"
"You know him?"
"Ancients, he mind controlled me at some point."
(He isn't gonna knowledge the narrowed eyes of the bat. Nu-uh.)
Constantine whistles at that, giving a wince. "Yeah, we all had go through that at one point."
"Didn't know he was a descendant of an old house, but I don't recognise the name Showenhower?"
John clicks his tongue, shrugging. "They branched out from the original house of Chatterton." He points at the screen, showing their current annoyance for all to see.
"What strange is, is that the house of Chatterton had many names in its line, so why is Showenhower of all the current heir? I'm calling tomfoolery."
"Oh no, I'm fully agreeing."
"Care to share with the class?" Jason, Red hood, asks, eyebrow raised and leaning against the table.
"Houses of the dark, old ones at that, are powerful." Danny explains. "The original house is always the most powerful, each branch can, depending of how far the connection is to the original, be very weak or very strong."
"But this here?" John gestures to the screen. "This smells like betrayal."
"The house of Chatterton was one of the youngest of oldest houses, new compared to the Nightingales and Constantines." The younger took over again, frowning.
"And yet Showenhower is the heir, which shouldn't happen since the family is rather estranged from the original. It should've only happen when no other house, those closer, are unable to take the title."
"It means they disappeared, and one cannot simply disappear once connected to a house of dark." The Hellblazer looks grim, eyening the golden pocket watch.
"Midnight soon," he glances at the Nightingale. "Should we?"
"Where are you going?" Bruce steps forward, cowl laying like a hood behind him.
Danny peers up at the man, apologetic. "B? Can you let me and Connie handle this?"
The man is looking at Constantine with sharp eye, conveying his message and intent clearly.
("Let him get hurt and we will hunt you down.")
"Alright, chum. Be careful."
He receives a bright smile, making it almost, only almost, worth it.
"Alright, chum. Be careful."
He receives a bright smile, making it almost, only almost, worth it.
Nightingale looks at Constantine.
These are no normal circumstances.
"The house of Nightingale offers a temporary truce until the suspected betrayal of a house of dark is fully investigated."
"The house of Constantine accepts the temporary truce offer and gladly accepts the request of help for the betrayal of a house of dark."
They shook hands, whispering "so mote it be." to legalise the spell and then are off to go.
Danny waves at his family as John teleports them both away.
"I'm betting 50 bucks that Constantine fails in protecting danny."
"I bet 60 for danny finishing the job!"
"70 for–"
(Bets were made, and all parties waited for the true end.)

ok I have A Lot of thoughts about the staircase confession (well really about Edwin's whole character arc, but all roads lead to rome) but for now I just wanna say that, yes, I was bracing myself for something to go terribly wrong when I first watched it, and yes, part of me was initially worried its placement might be an uncharacteristically foolish choice made in the name of Drama or Pacing or Making a Compelling Episode of Television but at the expense of narrative sense--
But I wanna say that having taken all that into account, and watched it play out, and sat with it - and honestly become rather transfixed by it - I really think it's a beautifully crafted moment and truly the only way that arc could've arrived at such a satisfying conclusion.
And if I had to pinpoint why I not only buy it but also have come to really treasure it, I'd have to put it down to the fact that it genuinely is a confession, and nothing else.
That moment is an announcement of what Edwin has come to understand about himself, but because it takes the form of a character admitting romantic feelings for such a close friend, I think it can be very easy, when writing that kind of thing, to imbue it with other elements like a plea or a request or even the start of a new relationship that, intentionally or not, would change the shape of the moment and can quickly overshadow what a huge deal the telling is all on its own. But that's not the case here. Since it is only a confession, unaccompanied by anything else, and since we see afterward how it was enough, evidently, to fix the strangeness that had grown between him & Charles, we're forced to understand that it was never Edwin's feelings that were actually making things difficult for him - it was not being able to tell Charles about them. 'Terrified' as he's been of this, Edwin learns that his feelings don't need to either disappear completely or be totally reciprocated in order for him to be able to return to the peace, stability, and security of the relationship with which he defines his existence - and the scale of that relief a) tells us a hell of a lot about Edwin as a character and b) totally justifies the way his declaration just bursts out of him at what would otherwise be such a poorly chosen moment, in my opinion.
Whether or not they are or ever could be reciprocated, Edwin's feelings are definitively proven not to be the problem here - only his potential choice to bottle it up - his repression - is. And where that repression had once been mainly involuntary, a product of what he'd been through, now that he's got this new awareness of himself, if he still fails to admit what he's found either to himself or to the one person he's so unambiguously close with, then that repression will be by his own choice and actions.
And he won't do that. Among other things, he's coming into this scene having just (unknowingly) absolved the soul of his own school bully and accidental killer by pointing out a fact that is every bit as central to his self-discovery as anything about his sexuality or his attraction to Charles is: the idea that "If you punish yourself, everywhere becomes Hell"
So narratively speaking, of course it makes sense that Edwin literally cannot get out of Hell until he stops punishing himself - and right now, the thing that's torturing him is something he has control over. It's not who he is or what he feels, but what he chooses to do with those feelings that's hurting him, and he's even already made the conscious choice to tell Charles about them, he was just interrupted. But now that they're back together and he's literally in the middle of an attempt to escape Hell, there is absolutely no way he can so much as stop for breath without telling Charles the truth. Even the stopping for breath is so loaded - because they're ghosts, they don't need to breathe, but also they're in Hell, so the one thing they can feel is pain, however nonsensical. And Edwin certainly is in pain. But whether he knows what he's about to do or not when he says he 'just needs a tick,' a breather is absolutely not what's gonna give him enough relief to keep climbing - it's fixing that other hurt, though, that will.
Like everything else in that scene, there's a lot of layers to him promising Charles "You don't have to feel the same way, I just needed you to know" - but I don't think that means it isn't also true on a surface level. It's the act of telling Charles that matters so much more than whatever follows it, and while that might have gone unnoticed if anything else major had happened in the same conversation, now we're forced to acknowledge its staggering and singular importance for what it is. The moment is well-earned and properly built up to, but until we see it happen in all its wonderful simplicity, and we see the aftermath (or lack thereof, even), we couldn't properly anticipate how much of a weight off Edwin's shoulders merely getting to share the truth with Charles was going to be, why he couldn't wait for a better, safer opportunity before giving in to that desire, or how badly he needed to say it and nothing else - and I really, really love the weight that act of just being honest, seen, and known is given in their story/relationship.

Sam Wilson and the Case of the Damisa-Sarki Habit
| Pairing: SamBucky | Rated: M | WC: 19.2K | Chapters 4/4 |
Summary: Sam Wilson is a private eye who specializes in art theft. His current case has put him against the infamous White Wolf. Or so everyone thinks...
Excerpt:
“This must be a dream come true,” said Nat with a smirk, “Or fanfiction becoming reality. Do you write self-insert RPF with him in it? I bet you do.” Sam rolled his eyes, turning to Nat. “Stop being a dick, I just keep up with the ongoing investigation. I’m not, like, obsessed or something.” “Oh, you’re definitely obsessed, don’t even try to front here, Wilson.” Sam wouldn’t say he was obsessed. He just found the White Wolf fascinating. No one even had an idea about who the White Wolf was. Nationality, gender, reasoning; no one had a clue and leads ran dry almost immediately on the cases. Sam had a few theories on why the White Wolf did the things that they did, but the theories weren’t conclusive, mostly speculation.

The thing that stands out the most to me about Stage of Betrayal is the fact that Rei proves himself completely incapable of envisioning a world in which Hiro would ever willingly leave him behind. Hiro killed himself because Rye made him, because Rye gave him his own gun and forced him to shoot.
To me, the kicker isn't that Rei is actually wrong about this (even strategically speaking, killing himself and destroying all connections to his loved ones was objectively a good move on Hiro's part, and not at all unreasonable nor unheard of considering his job and circumstances), but how he's so deep in denial that he just can't see what happened through any other lenses.
He ignores any and all inconsistencies within his deduction because to acknowledge them would mean he'd have to take into consideration the idea that Hiro immediately chose to kill himself as option number one instead of trying to survive until they could at least attempt an extraction, which feels an awful lot like abandonment. It feels like Hiro put the mission and secrecy above everything else, even Rei (which we know isn't true. Hiro killed himself because he loved the people close to him more than anything and he wanted to keep them safe— which, if you spend more than ten seconds thinking about the scenario, becomes immediately obvious as the motivation behind his suicide).
Hiro killed himself because he was terrified he'd be forced to drag Rei into the line of fire. He did that out of love, without thinking, while Rei can't even consider that as an option because they have fundamentally different ways of thinking and to him it would mean that Hiro didn't care enough to stay alive.
And Rei, being an extremely emotional person, wouldn't handle that well at all— which only leaves him the option of denial (be it subconscious or not).

Thomas King and Monty Finch (Actor/Accidental Pretty Woman AU)
So Monty signs the fucking contract and takes the money. Shoves it under a loose floorboard in his apartment. And resolves not to think about it.
There's just one problem: Thomas comes back the next day, though this time he skips Monty's bar shift and heads directly for him at the pool tables. And he looks directly at Monty, that same crooked smile playing on his lips, leans in, and says, voice low, “I couldn't stop thinking about you. You really do fascinate me, Monty."
And fuck Monty, but it sends shivers down his spine, because last night proved that Thomas' fascination, even if it came with a fucking price, gave him possibly the best night that he's had in years.
And Monty should say no. He should turn Thomas down. He should say not again. He should ask are you really so lonely that you thought the only way I’d get on my knees was if you paid me?
But last night was good, and Monty's stuck in this dead end city with this dead end job and his fucking mother guilting him into everything and so what's the fucking harm in selling his soul to the devil, right, when the devil is that pretty and that good with his tongue?
-aletterinthenameofsanity, people think i'm pretty (so I'll sell my pride instead)
Do I wanna know?
If this feeling flows both ways?
Sad to see you go
Was sorta hoping that you'd stay
Baby, we both know
That the nights were mainly made
For saying things that you can't say tomorrow day
How many secrets can you keep?
-Arctic Monkeys, Do I Wanna Know
Also ft. me trying not to burst at the seams talking about chapter 2 ( @anything-thats-rock-and-roll definitely has some thoughts on the matter)!

I'm imagining a world where it was darker when Crystal left the shop, just enough for the windows to be a reflective surface. So when Esther blew things up, Charles full body THREW Edwin through the window to escape.
And now Edwin is some place else, and Charles was RIGHT BEHIND him, but now he's not here, so Edwin is torn between staying where he is since it obviously isn't safe in the shop, or going back to find Charles.
