Dehydrated and ground up some peppers today. I've got the large red Paprika peppers ground up for our own use, and the smaller yellow datil peppers (habenero like heat) ground up into flakes for the chickens. Feels good to actually put things from my garden to use!
#mine#the datils all ripened at once so they may as well go#and the paprika smells AMAZING although it definitely got me sneezing and coughing as I was grinding it#surprisingly the datils didnt affect me too bad but i didnt grind them as finely#gardening#next is to find a way to make/keep a bunch of pesto because boy do i have a ton of fkn basil

Lonesome highway across San Augustin Plains. The plains extend roughly northeast-southwest, with a length of about 55 miles and a width varying between 5–15 miles. The basin is bounded on the south by the Luera Mountains and Pelona Mountain (outliers of the Black Range); on the west by the Tularosa Mountains; on the north by the Mangas, Crosby, Datil, and Gallinas Mountains; and on the east by the San Mateo Mountains.

I've finally caved. Makin' a TADC oc lol so here's some lil quick doodles figuring out how she functions
The show grew on me in episode 2 (Did not like episode 1. Luckily I decided to give it another chance because it was a pilot after all) and I ran into the spectacular freakshow and carnival aus that I can't get enough of (seriously check them out if you haven't, /@sm-baby for carnival and /@hootbon for freakshow) so figured why not indulge myself in a lil new fixation. I'mma go into more datil on her when I finish her up but there's general stuff for now. If my handwriting is a lil hard to read fair lol, but in order of left to right top to bottom it reads:
"Stuck to hands"(the cymbals) "Doesn't like stomach poking out. or lack of pants..." "Tail moves mostly subconsciously (gains control over time)" "Discovery of tail" "Learns thumbs up! Eventually..." "Long arms give great hugs!" and "Too shy/awkward to actually do it..."
But ye if it wasn't obvious she's based off of a cymbal monkey toy lol and is also just me so some info might be a tad personal later on but whatevs. Gotta express myself somehow.

the first few trays are planted, onions and leeks from last week have started to spring up, tomatoes and peppers are now germinating on a heat pad.
By no means are these all the tomatoes and peppers for the seasons, just the ones I have on hand right now.
Seed starting mix) is 3 parts coco coir, 1 part perlite, and 1 part worm castings, with a big scoop of rock phosphorous for root growth. My first watering has a touch of liquid kelp.
I have a huge bag of perlite up to my waist that I got off Amazon from PVP Industries, 120qt for $38.
Coco coir I also got off Amazon, I tried to do the math to find the cheapest source at the time, and that was "ZeeDix" coir bricks.
Worm castings were a bargain, for a while in the fall Costco sold a ten pound bag of Impact Organics worm castings for 11 dollars, but they rotate their inventory so much who knows when it'll be in stock again.
Obviously you can use any light soil mix as well, but I've tried to go soilless and use coir for my starts since my seed starting area is in the garage where loads of bugs could get into and make homes. Flies and aphids and ants marched in last year and ate so many of my plants that I'm not taking any chances with pests. List of plants: (everything in this batch is Baker Creek) Orange Hat Tomato Barry's Crazy Cherry Tomato Black Strawberry Tomato Thorburne's Terra Cotta Tomato Aji Charapita Pepper Banana Pepper Datil Pepper Genovese Basil - DollarSeed Bloomesdale Spinach - Baker Creek Broccoli Raab - DollarSeed American Flag Leek - DollarSeed Yellow Granex Onion - DollarSeed White Bunching Onion - DollarSeed

I made some good progress on putting the garden to bed for the season. Took out 3 tomato cages that I used for trellises. Cleaned out the peas, green beans, pinto beans, hot peppers, basil, broccoli, and harvested all of the cucumbers.
Ended up with a very large basket of basil, plenty of cucumbers for seeds, and a large bowl of each the pinto beans and hot peppers (a mix of jalapeno and datil peppers). I'm hoping to have every garden bed cleaned up for winter by the end of the week.
By the way... does anyone know if I can do anything with marigolds?
I know I can feed them to the chickens, but that's about it..
#homestead#farm#gardening#end of season#theres a few things left to harvest#and then we will cover it in horse manure#marigold

Just a few things I've gotten out of the garden recently. The first cantaloupe, datil pepper(paired next to a few jalapeños), and lastly some of the crop of carrots that I pulled!
#mine#gardening#im definitely doing some things differently for next years gardening#but ive also got a fair amount of chicken compost building up to add to beds as well next year#the datil is like a habanero pepper and ill probably make it into flakes 4 chickens#also shoutout to the lemon drop watermelon behind the cantaloupe#the other watermelon i picked with that one popped open itself the moment I rested the knife on its rind#theyre super prone to busting open but I was not expecting it to do it so abruptly lol#very sweet though! probably wont grow it again lol
