mi state pian piano convertendo alle fiction rai (maledizione a voi, mi manca la buona scrittura delle serie estere). ho visto un professore e tra una bestemmia e l'altra i personaggi mi hanno conquistata

Allora io purtroppo continuo a consigliare almeno la prima stagione di mare fuori (non ti consiglio di andare oltre alla terza ma poi vedi tu). Se vuoi stare sulle miniserie a me non era dispiaciuta Shake (su Raiplay) che è abbastanza leggera e corta, Mental e Sirene che però è veramente una trashata che ti tira su di morale come poche altre cose. Sempre di una stagione c'è quel piccolo gioiello di Brennero, e sullo storico Mameli, La Storia e Per Elisa.

Se ti sta piacendo noi siamo leggenda sicuramente amerai La Porta Rossa (ha il mio cuore) assolutamente da recuperare, poi potresti dare una chance anche a Sopravvissuti che però non è stata rinnovata quindi a tuo rischio e pericolo. Altri piccoli gioielli sono Volevo Fare la Rockstar, Blanca, naturalmente L'Amica Geniale. Braccialetti Rossi sicuramente è un must. Non mi era dispiaciuta l'ironia di Vincenzo Malinconico (che però è solo una serie infinita di cliché) né la cupezza de I Casi di Teresa Battaglia di cui domani comincia la seconda stagione. Di crime ci sono anche I Bastardi di Pizzofalcone e Il Commissario Ricciardi, che però io trovo troppo lente quindi non le consiglio proprio a cuore leggero.

Poi classico dei classici (ha veramente fatto la storia e così belle non ne fanno più) direi Tutti Pazzi per Amore, ti spacchi dalle risate come non mai.

Su altre piattaforme oltre Raiplay ti consiglio assolutamente Un'Estate Fa e Tutto Chiede Salvezza, sto sentendo cose molto belle su Hanno Ucciso l'Uomo Ragno anche se non l'ho ancora vista. Anche Prisma ma l'hanno cancellata dopo 2 stagioni. Come dimenticare The Bad Guy!!!!! Assolutamente da vedere.

CRIME FICTION INTERVIEW: VALERIO VARESI (ENGLISH VERSION)

Italian author Valerio Varesi has been a shining light in European crime fiction since the publication of his first book Latest news of a fugue in 1998, the Turin native switching seamlessly between his novels and his role as a journalist for the likes of la Repubblica.

His Commissario Soneri stories have been adapted into the TV series Nebbie e delitti , while he has also written historical-political novels collected in the volume Trilogia di una Repubblica .

His latest Soneri tale The Unseen has been translated into English by Joseph Farrell for UK audiences through Patrician Press and sees the Parma detective investigate an unsolved case of a dead body found in the Po River three years before.

Matthew Ogborn: Valerio, your evocative descriptions of the Po in The Unseen and previous tales are such a crucial part in the enjoyment of this series for me so how much research do you undertake to capture the unique atmosphere of the river and the quirky characters that live and work there?

Valerio Varesi: “Essentially this is based on my long observations of the river and my walks along its shores. I use the same method for the city of Parma and for the Apennines. In this way I incorporate these sensations which I then translate into images and put on paper. It's as if I photograph the scenery in my mind and record my impressions. As well as this, I talk to people at length. In the case of the Po, I visit sailing clubs and chat to the boatmen. I have made friends with the captain of a tourist ship sailing on the river. "

Much like Florida for Carl Hiaasen and Louisiana in James Lee Burke's Robicheaux novels, the setting serves as a character in itself. What is it that fascinates you about the Po?

“The river is a metaphor for life - 'everything flows' by Heraclitus. It also represents the power of nature: the mighty and apparently calm current concealing the mystery in the depths of its waters. The river which gives and takes away life. As in the presence of a great mountain or an endless sea horizon, we feel small and limited. We return to our mortal human nature in the face of what appears immortal. For this nature approaches the divine and represents it. "

You have a brilliant knack of making each character come alive in idiosyncratic ways, whether through offbeat description or natural dialogue. How important is that part of the writing process outside of the plot machinations and do you visit with people from all walks of life to nail it?

“Every writer is rather schizophrenic in the best sense of the word, namely that they know how to be someone other than themselves, identifying with their characters and experiencing different lives to their own. Writers steal other people's lives. Only in this way can I create credible characters. I often draw benefit from meeting people and observing them. In other cases I make use of widespread human typologies. This work is key because every storyline and every vision of the world needs characters to make them come alive. "

The Soneri books are also notable for the brutally honest descriptions of the passage of time and how it affects both Soneri and the people around him such as Angela. How cathartic is that for you and how does your background in philosophy influence the types of issues that you address?

“Soneri is a work in progress, he develops, he gets older, and he changes with time. Time is the most precious thing we are given and our life is a sort of countdown before the void. My commissario is conscious of this and is saddened by the passing of the years. He tries however to carry out his worldly tasks by him well as the stoics advised and, as Heidegger teaches us, he plans his life by him by being aware of death. Let's say that my studies have influenced his vision of reality - considering that Soneri is partly my alter ego. "

How important is it to you to receive recognition from the likes of international organizations such as The CWA here in the UK for your novels whether you are placed on a longlist, shortlist or win something outright?

“Very important, especially if recognition comes in the country with the most spoken language in the world and with top quality level of publishing. At times, in Italy, there is a feeling of living and writing in a restricted and provincial orbit. For me, being appreciated abroad is vital. I've also had good recognition and excellent sales in France. "

In these increasingly chaotic global times that we live in, what do you see as crime fiction's role both from the writer's perspective and also the reader's perspective?

"I think that crime fiction, noir, polar [a French term for cross between crime fiction and noir] and other types of this genre, have the function of being 'fact' novels. Evil must be written about not purely as an end in itself, but also as a social outcome - the result of a sickness created by the inequalities inside a community. The crime must be analyzed, asking why it happened, and not only questioning who committed it. Speaking with your journalist hat on, do you think we have reached a tipping point in terms of how news outlets try to seek the truth in the face of rampant corruption as the public are flooded with lies through social media by special interests and people become entrenched in paranoid delusions?

"This age is bursting with information sources. At one time people received their information from traditional media, namely newspapers and television, now news arrives from every part of the internet world. As this world is completely uncontrolled, people, organizations, and actual manipulators are aiming to direct and influence public opinion with unverified and specifically fabricated false news. The trouble is that these forces can change the course of history. What do you see as religion's place in society now, especially in a country like Italy where it has underpinned life for so long, and how do you address this in your novels going forward?

“We live in a world, the western world, where traditional religion as a model for life and learning is almost totally irrelevant. This doesn't mean that spirituality doesn't exist, but it is expressed differently compared to traditional religion. At the same time, religion for some people in the rest of the world often crosses over to fanaticism which can lead to clashes, terrorism and violence. The coexistence in the West between European people and immigrants isn't easy, especially with Muslims whose values ​​are so different to ours. What have been the biggest positives from the TV adaptations of your Soneri novels and are you encouraged by the increased scope of stories allowed with the rise of the streaming services and their budgets?

Please tell me how you remain so positive! Negativity doesn't seem to bother you and I'm jealous tbh haha I wish I could not let it bother me when people shit on shows/characters I love but I take it so personally and I don't know how to stop it. Do you have any advice? It's just because I know how this fandom operates sometimes I watch clips and instead of enjoying the content, I end up thinking about how the fandom is gonna misconstrued certain bits of it to be ~problematic~ sigh.

Ah love. It makes me sad that your fandom experience isn’t as fun as it should be!

First of all, I haven’t seen any pointless negativity for a long while which means I must have blocked well. That’s a tool. Use it! There’s no shame in it. Fandom is a subjective experience and it’s meant to be fun! If it isn’t for whatever reason then try to solve that. You dictate your own fandom experience to a large extent.

Also, I am long in the tooth. I’ve been on tumblr since 2009. I’ve been in fandoms for way longer than that too. It’s a fun part of my day and I don’t allow it to be anything other than that. Fandoms are based on (for the most part) fictional stuff. That’s supposed to be fun and creative and thought provoking. If fictional stuff starts to become too serious then I think people need to assess their approach.

Some fandom things ARE important and do bring up very serious and tricky topics. That’s a wonderful thing. For example, mental health or sexuality to use the ones for s3 but also so so much stuff that people have experience with or that they find hard to discuss or have VERY ingrained opinions about. There are certain things I DO NOT touch because I have views which have been dictated by personal experience (one of the reasons why some elements of s6 of Skam France atm are a no go for me) and I know many will not share my view! But that’s ok. People go through things and yes that part of it means people will have opinions. That’s a great thing! It ISN’T when those opinions are forced upon others. I’m all up for constructive criticism and for important chats in fandom, also for ensuring spaces are safe and behaviour appropriate. I’m NOT up for anything that goes beyond that into pointless negativity etc. It’s not fun for me so I leave it behind or remove it.

I guess, look at it this way. If you’re in a cafe with all of your friends and you are all going to order. You say you’re getting an iced latte and everyone else doesn’t like them. Does that stop you from getting one? Does it make you like it less? Someone tells you they had a really disgusting one once and they’re bad for you. You know you drink them in moderation and love them and they are a treat for you. Should you let that one person stop you from enjoying that treat?

Apply that same logic to fandom! It’s a kinda cheesy analogy but I hope it helps!

“Problematic” is a word I wish would be removed from modern speech as well as “discourse” and a few others. True “problematic” stuff should absolutely be raised. Most stuff labelled as “problematic” is not at all. It is someone not agreeing, not liking it, not applying objectivity. If there’s a legitimate reason why something is “problematic” then I’m all for chatting about it because perhaps I have something to learn! I have learned a lot from folks in fandoms. As Elia in Skam It said, we shouldn’t be talking about stuff we don’t know anything about. We can offer a view but those who KNOW should talk about it.

No show is perfect. None. I adore Skam Italia s2 but I still recognise a few issues, for example. It doesn’t destroy my love. I recognise that cultures and countries and approaches are different, language is different, people may not approach stuff on the same way and shows should be open to criticism (which is why I think what Wtfock have done a few times is really cool of them). It’s not a crime! Being wrong isn’t a bad thing. If you’re grown up enough to realise you maybe don’t know everything and can use it as a way to learn... then use it! And shows should take the same approach if criticism is valid and constructive... so that part of fandom is a great thing I think. It’s why I’ve always been honest about, for example, the way Ludo Bessegato or David H as show runners have really not done themselves any favours at times (if we’re sticking with Skam as an example!). Does it mean I hate them?! No! Ludo Besse is someone I have great respect for in many ways, he cares a shit ton, he has serious talent but I fully recognise he can be dramatic and also huffy and can fail to receive constructive criticism at times. Doesn’t stop him being a great dude! I am sure I stuff up at times too!!

Where it is toxic and unhelpful... it is often folks taking fictional stuff far too seriously, imposing their own views which do not require consensus, failing to see nuance or simply because they wish to be cruel. None of that is helpful and if you don’t wish to see it, you don’t have to.

I guess I’m also older. Look, I’m tired 😂 all the time. I also have a mental health condition for which distraction can help MASSIVELY. Fandom is a part of my day alongside all other stuff that adds a bit of fun and creativity and you get to meet lovely people. If that’s not what fandom is to you then try hard to make it so! I think I’ve seen it all at this point. I also recognise that I am a bit older and so maybe things don’t affect me as much. I don’t give a shit what people think. Genuinely! I am entirely who I am and love what I love with all of the important caveats that needs... and so I guess this is all the advice I have! I hope it helps and that you can enjoy fandom the way it should be enjoyed.

Life is hard as hell at the moment in MANY ways. Don’t make something designed for fun and escape into another issue to tackle. Come chat any time ❤️
